So defending champion Elaine Thompson-Herah has qualified fastest for the women's 200m final with 21.66 seconds, which will be at 13:50 BST on Tuesday.

The other automatic qualifiers are: Marie-Josee Ta Lou, Shaunae Miller-Uibo, Christine Mboma, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Beatrice Masilingi.

Gabrielle Thomas and Mujinga Kambundji make it through as fastest losers. As Christine Ohuruogu says, it's going to be a good one.

There will be no British representation unfortunately, with Beth Dobbin's 22.85 not fast enough.

Sifan Hassan recovered from a dramatic fall to win her 1500m heat and keep her pursuit of an unprecedented Olympic treble on track.

The Dutchwoman is bidding for a medal in that event as well as the 5,000m and 10,000m in what would be a first.

The Barcelona forward volleyed in from a tight angle after Australia made a mess of clearing from a long-range deflected effort.

Australia face the USA on Thursday in the bronze medal match - the first time the Matildas will contest a match for an Olympic women's football medal.

Norway's Karsten Warholm ran a stunning men's 400m hurdles race to obliterate his previous world record and take gold at Tokyo 2020.

Warholm, 25, finished in 45.94 seconds to slash more than seven tenths off his old record, while American Rai Benjamin was hot on his heels to win silver having also beaten the previous record.

Warholm had set the previous world record of 46.70 in Oslo in July.

Brazil's Alison dos Santos took the bronze medal with a time of 46.72.

"You know the cliche that it hasn't sunk in yet? I don't think it has but I feel ecstatic," Warholm, who now holds the European, World and Olympic titles, told BBC Sport.

"I can't believe the time, it's so fast! A lot of the time I am asked about the perfect race... I said it didn't exist, but this is the closest I've ever come.

"I told myself going into the race, remember all the work you have put in. It was the only thing missing from my [medal] collection.

China won 29 gold medals already.

They won the Olympics in Beijing too in 2008.

Looks like China is going from being nr. 2 to now winning the olympics everytime.

Very impressive.

Unlike the Russians I think the Chinese are too proud to do systematic doping. Do you think they dope the athletes or just hard work?

Giles Scott won Great Britain's second sailing gold of day 11 of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as the defending champion did enough in a thrilling finish to clinch gold in the Finn class.

Earlier, Dylan Fletcher and Stuart Bithell claimed the men's 49er title.

National pride is a big thing for every country but it's a really big thing for the Chinese, especially as it grew in economy and stature and replaced the Soviet Union as the primary superpower competitor for the USA. The CPC specially took special efforts to improve the performance of China in sporting competitions like the Olympics by way of increased funding in all the games at the Olympics. So even in events like synchronised swimming, you'll have a Chinese team training hard for it to win the gold medal at the next Olympics. If cricket is introduced in the next Olympics, you could probably see an increased funding for cricket in China too.

Amazing, from our lad Karsten! I don’t know if people understand how crazy this record was. To smash his own record from Bislett stadium, where I myself have played many football matches, with such a margin is truly amazing. One of the biggest (if not the biggest)Norwegian victories ever.

Shot Putter Tests Positive for Steroids

A shot putter from the country of Georgia has tested positive for steroids and been pulled from his event Tuesday.

The International Testing Agency says Benik Abramyan tested positive for two steroids and a banned hormone in a sample taken in Tokyo on Saturday. That was his 36th birthday.

Abramyan was due to take part in the shot put qualifying round later Tuesday.

The agency says the athlete can appeal against his provisional suspension at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Abramyan competed at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and did not reach the final.

Tokyo Olympics Hockey: Belgium knock India out of the semi-finals; India lose 5-2, still in contention for a bronze medal

Hockey- India vs Belgium: Manpreet Singh and the team have been defeated by World No. 2 Belgium: Belgium 5-2 India. India will now play for the bronze medal. Belgium’s drag-flicker Hendricx scored a hat-trick to ensure that the Belgian team goes on to the finals of the Tokyo Olympics. Belgium scored very early in the match but India came back in the 1st quarter by scoring 2 goals and taking the lead. However, that was the only quarter in which India had complete control of the match. The rest of the 3 quarters were controlled by the Belgians. For India, both the goals came in the 1st quarter by Harmanpreet and Mandeep Singh. Belgium will face either Australia or Germany in the finals

The Manpreet Singh-led Indian men’s hockey team suffered a defeat at the hands of Belgium in the first semi-final of the ongoing Tokyo Olympics here at Oi Hockey Stadium North Pitch on Tuesday. Belgium defeated India 5-2 in the semi-final and they will now face the winner of the second semi-final between Australia and Germany in the gold medal match on Thursday.

On the other hand, India will lock horns in the bronze medal match on Thursday with the loser of the game Australia and Germany. The Indian boys started well and looked to keep up the good work, but lost the tempo slightly in the last quarter and that is where the boys from Belgium capitalized.

In fact, the last goal was a case of the Belgium players taking advantage as India withdrew goalie Sreejesh and brought in a field player. Loick Luypaert gave Belgium an early lead in the match as he registered a goal in the starting minutes of the first quarter and as a result, India was put on the back foot straight away.

However, India struck back as Harmanpreet Singh and Mandeep Singh scored goals in quick succession, and as a result, India gained a 2-1 lead in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Belgium got the equalizer as Alexander Hendrickx successfully converted a penalty corner, and it brought the scoreline level to 2-2. No more goals were scored in the second quarter, and the scoreline remained level.

The deadlock was not broken in the third quarter as well, and as a result, heading into the last 15 minutes of the game, both India and Belgium were highly tensed. In the fourth quarter, it was Belgium who struck first as Hendrickx scored his second goal of the match, giving Belgium a 3-2 lead with more than 11 minutes still left to play.

A few minutes later, Hendrickx got his hat-trick as he converted from a penalty and hence, Belgium gained a 4-2 lead. In the end, Belgium managed to hang on and the side registered a victory, progressing ahead to the finals, their second successive final appearance.

Earlier, India had defeated Great Britain 3-1 in the quarterfinals on Sunday to enter the last four stage

Simone Biles won bronze in the beam final at the Tokyo Games in an emotional return to the Olympic gymnastics competition.

The American had not competed since last week's team final, where she performed on the vault but no other apparatus before saying she wanted to protect her mental health.

After suffering with the 'twisties', which gymnasts describe as a kind of mental block, Biles pulled out of the all-around, vault, floor and uneven bars.

The 24-year-old jumped up and down and hugged her rivals after scoring 14.000 with a solid routine which ended with a double backward somersault and double pike onto the mat.

China's Guan Chenchen scored 14.633 to win gold, with compatriot Tang Xijing taking silver (14.233).

China's Xie Siyi won his second diving gold of Tokyo 2020 - by beating the team-mate with whom he won his first.

The 29-year-old Jamaican surged home in 21.53 seconds, just 0.19 seconds off Florence Griffith-Joyner's long-standing world record, to back up her individual golds from Rio 2016.

It is the second-fastest time in history.

India vs Pakistan in Olympics Athletes Finals. Group A was topped by India's Neeraj Chopra. Group B by Arshad Nadeem.

Guys watch the Javelin throw right now.

The young star kid Neeraj Chopra throws 86.65m in his first throw. He was junior world champion, asian games and commonwealth games gold winner.

Pakistan's highly talented Arshad Nadeem throws 85.16m and is the leader in his group.

Both have qualified for the final. Stop whatever you're doing and tune in to the javelin finals. South asian supremacy ftw!

The finals is on Aug 7th. Mark your calendars. An Indian and Pakistani athelete competing for a medal in an athletic event at the Olympics doesn't happen very frequently.

The Chinese guy be like "wth is happening over there..":misbah

P.S.: In all honesty, Vetter from Germany might win the gold medal. He makes 90m throws pretty easily.

Arshad Nadeem is Pakistan's first ever athlete who is going to feature in any track or field athletics event at the Olympics. If he finishes on the podium, he will win Pakistan's first medal after the '92 Olympics in Barcelona.

Neeraj Chopra is the first Indian to top the qualifications of any atheltics event at the Olympics. I'm not sure if he's the first Indian to feature in the finals of an athletics event.

In any case, history already being made for both countries today morning.

She is gonna get the gold.she was excellent in her previous bout as well.

Lovlina gets the bronze medal.

The no.1 seed was just too clinical and professional for her. Lovlina looked raw in her technique and that was always going to be not enough against the top seed. Hopefully this helps to promote boxing more in India. Lovlina's medal brings the Indian tally to a silver and 2 bronze medals.

Yosozumi won with a trick-filled first run that scored 60.09, the only score to break 60 points in the event at the Ariake Urban Sports Park.

It immediately piled on pressure on the seven other finalists, and none was able to dislodge her. Japanese skaters also took both golds in the men and women’s street events in the first week of the Tokyo Games.

It was a momentous day for athletics in India when javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra hurled a massive 86.65m throw to reach the finals of the Men's Javelin Throw event in Tokyo Olympics.

Incidentally, Neeraj also topped the qualification event and became the first Indian to achieve the feat of topping an athletics qualification event and reach the finals. Just an hour after Neeraj's historic performance,

Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem hurled a big 85.16m throw in group B of the qualification event and topped his group to make it into the finals. His overall performance was marked him as the third-highest thrower in both the groups combined, behind Chopra and Germany's World no. 1 Johannes Vetter. As Nadeem ensured a final spot, the Indian social media space rejoiced over the fact that they will see a lip-smacking India vs Pakistan contest in the finals of the event on August 7.
