Gold Medal - Canada
Women's football

After winning successive bronze medals at London 2012 and Rio 2016, Canada have taken gold in the women's football at Tokyo 2020.

After a pretty terrible shootout with seven spot-kicks missed or saved, Canada win the shootout 3-2 on sudden death.

Sweden take the silver for the second successive Olympic Games.

I don't think that's as impressive when taking into account that they have a per capita income of over $50,000. Wealthy countries have always had a big advantage and 25-26 million isn't a small population base, it's large enough to have a large pool of competitors. Also, Australia sent one of the biggest continengents - over 470 athletes, so based off that sample you'd expect them to get at least 40-50 medals.

Also another huge factor is that countries with history of immigration tend to do better since they have a more diverse talent pool, this is why the US, Britain and Australia do well because they do have quite a few mixed race athletes and children of immigrants; is it really impressive that Australia wins a medal in tennis cause of Slavic immigrants or Britain winning the 100m dash cause of the son of jamaican immigrants? So immigration is huge advantage, it's also one of the reasons why Qatar has done surprisingly well in recent years.

LOL what? It is super impressive. Also you just stated they sent 470 or so athletes? That is incredible for such a small population.

"such a small population", lol that is NOT small population at all. Several countries have less than 15 million people while Australia has 25 million, sending more athletes means you're competing at every event and increasing your chances of medaling.

In India, wrestling is dominated by Jats. In fact any sport be it shooting/ wrestling/ boxing/ field hockey from Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab are all 80% jats.

Pakistani Punjab is more diverse so sports isn't dominated by just one community.

You know this isn't a charity right? Every athlete has to qualify first. 25 mill is almost 10 times less than Pak's population Yannis. Every medal from every athlete deserves recognition as being impressive.

Namma hudugi bangalorean Aditi Ashok could win the silver medal in golf , if no more play due to weather. It's going to be quite a party in bangalore if that happens .. fingers crossed

Yup..Was not posting about her today to not jinx her lol:yk

She was in the first position at one point today, but sadly dropped down to third place.

I think she is in bronze medal position right now. Not second place.

Nope looks like out of medal contention now. But still a champ

Aditi misses out on the bronze medal by a whisker. Erred in her penultimate shot that cost her third place.

Still an incredible achievement starting the year ranked 200 and battling with the best players in women's golf.

And he’s done it!! Galal Yafai is Olympic Champion, Olympic Gold is coming to Birmingham KingKhanWC

The best boxer at the games from Team GB, no one has quiet matched the intensity, relentlessness and desire to win Gold compared to Yafai, he has kept coming forward and the work rate has been incredible. Yafai knocked down the exciting flipino with a straight left in the first round and he never quiet recovered from that, excellent footwork with him side stepping to make use of every angle possible to attack up and especially the liver shots to the body, he looks pretty heavy handed! at his best up close but can box at mid-range to and the defence was sound, my word he is composed and calm under so much pressure, didn’t rush with his shots either when he had his man down. Was ahead going into the third and displayed some lateral movement and head movement to avoid getting landed with anything clean as the flipino needed the KO at that point.

A masterclass in Boxing at the games, fantastic to watch totally worth being up at 6am for, he definitely has the potential to be the most versatile fighter among the Yafai Family!

Team USA secured their fourth straight Olympic gold medal as they beat France 87-82 in Tokyo.

It was the second time the two teams had met in the competition, with France ending the USA's 25-game winning run in the group stages.

However, Gregg Popovich's side, who under-performed in the build-up to the tournament, hit their stride when it mattered most.

Kevin Durant was USA's standout player yet again, scoring 29 points.

France made a late, fourth-quarter run but came up just short as the US made their shots at big moments to hold onto their lead and claim their seventh gold medal out of the last eight on offer.

Looking forward to the Jevelin final.

I thing the Indian guy has a good shot at silver.

Pakistani guy can fight for Bronze.

Don't think anyone can take the gold from Johannes Vetter the german candidate.

Golf: Women's Individual Stroke Play

Inami Mane wins the playoff battle against Lydia Ko. Here are the final standings:

1. Nelly Korda

2. Inami Mane

3. Lydia Ko

4. Aditi Ashok

Britain's Galal Yafai is Olympic flyweight champion after an impressive victory over Carlo Paalam of the Philippines in Tokyo.

Yafai, 28, gained a 4-1 points decision at the Kokugikan Arena to secure Britain's 19th gold medal of the Games.

Other news:

Nelly Korda won gold for Team USA in women’s golf, beating Japan’s Mone Inami and New Zealand’s Lydia Ko by one shot

Kenya’s Peres Jepchirchir won gold in a 1-2 for Kenya in the women’s marathon

Norway won their first beach volleyball medal, with Anders Mol and Christian Sorum beating ROC in straight sets in the men’s final

There was no fourth Tokyo gold for New Zealand’s Lisa Carrington, with Hungary taking out the women’s K4 500m final

Just under 4 hours to go for the javelin final now. The last event for both India and Pakistan in the Tokyo olympics. When was the last time both India and Pakistan competed in a final of an Olympic event? Probably all the way back to the hockey finals in the 70s or 80s.

I know we hope for a medal for both the athletes but let's also be a bit realistic. Neeraj is pretty much the youngest athlete in the final while Nadeem is just a year older and both are competing their first olympics against higher ranked opponents and veterans.

Vetter throws 90m for fun, he should get the gold. There is also an another German medal favourite along with a couple of czech athletes. Let's hope both finish in the podium but don't be surprised if there are a bit of nerves for them.

Great Britain's Tom Daley won bronze in the men's 10m platform diving following an enthralling final at Tokyo 2020.

The 27-year-old was in a three-way tussle for gold but Chinese pair Cao Yuan and Yang Jian were in impressive form and took the top two spots respectively.

The USA has won its third consecutive gold medal in women’s water polo, beating Spain 14-5 in the final.

Maddie Musselman scored three times and Ashleigh Johnson made 11 saves as the USA improved to 134-4 since they won gold at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

Wrestling is pretty much dominated by Muslim wrestlers. Great to see.

Gadzhimurad rashidov of Russia won the Bronze medal in 65 kg category.

Bajrang Punia routs Daulat Niyazbekov of Kazakhstan 8-0 to win the bronze medal match.

6th medal for India and this is currently equal with London's tally as India's best olympics returns.

Oh no. This Indian guy has got that Shoaib Akhtar run up whereas Arshad jogs in like lambu Irfan.

7 Medals for India this Olympics.

By our standards that is elite.

Wow...what a performance by Neeraj...GOLD for India !!!!!

Add to the bronze won by Bajrang in Wrestling today...BEST EVER Olympics for INDIA

Total 7 medals

1 Gold
2 Silver
4 Bronze

So proud of Neeraj. Words can’t express.Fantastic work by Modiji and his government well in the last 6 years to develop sports :)

To think that the count shows 8 but we could have at least had 5-6 more medals if luck had gone out way is incredible.

Great day for Indian sports.

India came with realistic target of 10 medals in this games and If not for some setback from our genuine medal contenders, we would have met our target easily.

Won 7 medals
Missed 5 medals by whiskers.

Overall happy with the progress ans Neeraj GOLD is like cherry on top!!

I think Arshad should have got at least a bronze. Seeing him cry after his last attempt showed how much it meant to him, all others were celebrating when they bowed out of medal contention

Our best Olympics haul ever.

Might look a very small thing to celebrate but these are the stepping stones to something big in the future.

India Win 7 Olympics Medals In Highest-Ever Tally
Olympics 2020: India has won seven medals so far - two silver and four bronze and a gold medal.

New Delhi: India's wait for a gold medal at Tokyo Olympics ended today as Neeraj Chopra created history by becoming the country's first track and field athlete to clinch a gold with a throw of 87.58 m. With his medal added to this year's tally, India also saw a new record of winning the highest number of medals at Olympics, surpassing the 2012 record.
The country has won seven medals so far - two silver, four bronze and a gold. Shortly before Neeraj Chopra's dazzling win in Men's Javelin Throw, wrestler Bajrang Punia won a bronze today and defeated Kazakhstan's Daulet Niyazbekov.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in congratulating both of them. "History has been scripted at Tokyo! What Neeraj_chopra1
has achieved today will be remembered forever. The young Neeraj has done exceptionally well. He played with remarkable passion and showed unparalleled grit. Congratulations to him for winning the Gold. (sic)," he tweeted.

This week, the men's and women's hockey teams jumped one spot each to achieve their highest-ever world rankings at number 3 and 8 respectively after their enthralling performance. The women's team lost 3-4 to Great Britain in a hard-fought bronze play-off match on Friday. The men's team defeated Germany 5-4 in the bronze medal match to end a 41-year wait for an Olympic medal in hockey.

With 56 female sportspersons, India has the highest-ever female representation this year in the largest-ever Olympics contingent of over 120 athletes.

Ace shuttler PV Sindhu won a bronze on Sunday. The country recorded its first medal this year with Mirabai Chanu ending India's 21-year wait for a weightlifting medal at Olympics in the 49-kg category.

Lovlina Borgohain took home a bronze after losing her semi-final bout in women's welterweight (64-69kg) boxing to Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey. She is the third Indian boxer after Vijender Singh and MC Mary Kom to win a medal at the Olympic Games.

On Thursday, wrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya won a silver after narrowly losing 4:7 in the men's freestyle 57kg final to ROC's Zavur Uguev

The Prime Minister earlier this week praised all the athletes representing the country at Olympics while mentioning that they're giving a tough fight despite the "biggest disaster in 100 years" while talking about the pandemic.

"This year, India has seen the highest number of players qualifying for Olympics. Remember, they've achieved this feat while dealing with the biggest disaster in 100 years. There are many games for which we have qualified for the first time, and not just qualify... they've given a tough fight," PM Modi said. He will be inviting the Olympics contingent to Red Fort as special guests on Independence Day this year.

Wow if that is from a real verified account, nothing but respect to him. Keyboard warriors from both sides (me included) can learn a thing or 2 from a real sportsman hatsoff.

USA need 2 more medals to go over China.

-USA has a Basketball final for women against Japan
-They have 2 boxing finals for men.
-Volleyball final against Brazil.

China is competing in:
-Rhythmic Gymnastics -Group All-Round final - 8 nations competing
-Women Boxing Final

There are also Marathon and Cycling Track. Don't know if any Chinese or American is gonna compete.

So USA can still go above China. Huge pressure on the remaining American and Chinese athletes.

That's correct. Nadeem's hero is Chopra.
Commentators were saying this while he was contesting.

Neeraj Chopra and Ravi Dahiya will be only 26 years old at Paris Olympics. Many Bhaker and Sourabh Chaudhary both 22, Deepak Punia 25, Aditi Ashok 26, PV Sindhu 29, Vinesh 29 and Bajrang 30. They will all be at their physical and mental peak.

And expect many more in early 20s to join the contingent. Aim for 20-25 in Paris!

The Netherlands' Sifan Hassan won the 10,000m to seal her second gold and third medal of the Tokyo Olympics.

The 28-year-old, who had been seeking an unprecedented golden treble, had missed out on that feat when she took bronze in the 1500m but still takes home a hat-trick of medals after adding Saturday's gold to her 5,000m title.

Despite running three races in Tokyo's heat in the last few days, Hassan found an extra gear in the last lap.

She won in 29 minutes 55.32 seconds.

It had been a highly anticipated race with world champion Hassan pitted against Ethiopia's Letesenbet Gidey, who broke the Dutchwoman's world record in June, and it did not disappoint.

Hassan tucked in just behind the leaders and with about 3,000 metres remaining, she increased her pace to sit second behind Gidey.

On the final turn Hassan surged past the Ethiopian, who then faded further to take bronze after Bahrain's Kalkidan Gezahegne passed her to get the silver.

A German coach has been thrown out of the Olympics for appearing to punch a horse who was refusing to jump or trot during the modern pentathlon.

Coach Kim Raisner was heard on German TV urging tearful athlete Annika Schleu to "really hit" the horse while she struggled to control Saint Boy during the showjumping round of Friday's women's event.

Australia in general is a great sporting country, but they concentrate particularly in swimming, which has by far the most medals for any game in the Olympics. Think they bagged a lot of medals for swimming particularly their women's team.

Australia have won medals in the following sports so far:

Swimming
Rowing
Canoeing
BMX
Sailing
Skate boarding
Equestrian
Hockey
Beach volleyball
Cycling
Tennis
Decathlon
Diving
Javelin
High jump.

Thanks for providing me the list of sports where Australia won the medals, it's why I said Australia is a great sporting country in my post.

But not sure how this has anything to do with my post saying Australia concentrate more in swimming particularly.

Australia don't concentrate on swimming, its just that Australia is particularly good at swimming.

Basketball is more popular than Swimming in Australia but there are only two medals in basketball so you will never see more than two medals from basketball. Swimming just has more medals available.

This statement is factually wrong. Australia has a strong swimming programme. Almost every suburb has a local swimming pool with instructors, and if kids show talent and zeal then there are swimming academies specially training them for Olympics and global events.
It is not a singular focus in a single sport though, almost all outdoor sports have the same infrastructure.
It is more about interest e.g. I have found that Australians are not that much interested in Table Tennis and Badminton. But infrastructure is surely there.

Most of the Swimming Olympic Winners have gone to special training academies and schools at young age.
So there is focus on swimming for sure.

Of all the sports that are part of the summer Olympics, Australia fund swimming the most.

Australia is indeed better at swimming. But you can't get better at something unless you concentrate your efforts in getting better at that particular field.

As you have provided in your link swimming is only about 9.5% of the sports funds which proves beyond doubt that it is factually incorrect to say they concentrate on swimming.

If you break it down to per sportsperson then swimming would actually get less than a lot of sports.

I mean I didn't say Australia concentrate "only" on swimming. I said it concentrates on swimming more.

Obviously I wasn't thinking Australia allocates 100% of its sports budget on swimming alone.

Eliud Kipchoge says he has "fulfilled" his legacy after the Kenyan became the first athlete since 1980 to retain an Olympic marathon title at Tokyo 2020.

Kipchoge, only the third person to win successive Olympic marathons, finished in two hours eight minutes 38 seconds.

I have been involved in allocation of sporting funds locally and here in australia you have to be careful not to favor of unfairly allocate funds to any sporting association, if you do other sports will complain loudly. Funds are shared evenly depending on cost of sport, amount of participants, and results. There can be no concentration of funds to any sport.
