Tokyo Olympics 2020 Closing Ceremony: When And Where To Watch It Live?
The biggest sporting event of the year the Tokyo Olympics 2020 is inching towards its end. The last 15 days have been a roller coaster ride for all the sporting fans and athletes who took part in the games. Emotions were running high on the field, and from heartwarming triumphs to the disappointment of missing out on a podium finish, we witnessed everything. Tokyo Olympics will go down in the history books as one of its kind. The games that previously was scheduled to take place last year, had to be postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Things did not look easy this year too, but the organisers managed to pull it off successfully. This was the first Olympics that was held without spectators. While the change was heartbreaking for sports lovers, it was a requirement of the current time. India showed its best-ever performance at the Olympics. On the seventh day, Neeraj Chopra created history by clinching the gold medal in the Men’s javelin throw category.

On the final day, August 8, after conducting a few remaining events the closing ceremony will take place. The cultural events in the closing ceremony will be centred around the theme ‘worlds we share’ that symbolises the fact that each one of us inhabits our own world.

The artistic performance will show the culture of the host nation Japan, and the host of Olympics 2024- France. One of the major highlights of the closing ceremony will be the Antwerp Ceremony - a tradition that has been continued in all the closing ceremony events since Antwerp 1920 Summer Games. It symbolises the official passing of the torch from the current host to the next host.

When will the Olympic closing ceremony start?

The Tokyo Olympics 2020 closing ceremony will start at 4:30 PM (IST) on August 8, 2021.

Eliud Kipchoge pulled away late and no one could come close to catching him as the 36-year-old from Kenya defended his Olympic marathon title. Kipchoge finished in 2 hours, 8 minutes, 38 seconds on a breezy and humid Sunday along the streets of Sapporo.

Today in Tokyo, after clinching gold in basketball, the US women's volleyball team too has finished on top of the podium.

Track cyclist Jason Kenny's historic gold medal moved GB up to 64 medals on Sunday, hours before boxer Lauren Price won gold in the middleweight final.

That puts Britain on 65 medals - equalling their performance as hosts nine years ago and making Tokyo their second-most successful overseas Olympics after Rio 2016.

Bahraini athlete Alsadik Mikhou has been provisionally suspended for receiving a blood transfusion during the Tokyo Olympics.

The 31-year-old, who competed in the heats of the 1500m, provided a sample the day before he raced on Tuesday.

Brazil defended their Olympic men's football title following a dramatic extra-time victory over Spain at the Nissan Stadium.

Substitute Malcom raced in behind and slotted home the winner after 108 minutes to hand Brazil the gold medal.

Five years ago, Neymar scored the winning penalty as Brazil beat Germany to win their first gold on home soil.

Mikel Oyarzabal's volley for Spain had ruled out Matheus Cunha's opener in the second half of normal time.

In an enthralling contest between two of football's biggest heavyweights, Everton forward Richarlison missed a penalty and hit the crossbar.

Spain substitute Bryan Gil also hit the woodwork with a stunning long range strike a minute before extra time.

Brazil were competing in their third successive gold medal match at the Games - following on from the gold they won in Rio and a silver picked up in London 2012.

The 1992 champions Spain were tipped for gold before the tournament started as they had a squad laden with players who featured in this summer's European Championship.

Among them were Barcelona's Pedri and Eric Garcia, Villarreal's Pau Torres and Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon.

The Spaniards struggled to hit top form, despite grinding their way into the final, and did not show enough quality to snatch gold from Brazil.

Tokyo 2020 is coming to a close, but the spirit will be carried on in the 2024 Games.

The Olympic anthem plays, and the Olympic flag is lowered before it is handed over by the Governor of Tokyo to the president of the IOC, and finally, to the mayor of the next host city, Paris.

Following the flag handover is the French national anthem. The French national flag is raised in time to the anthem, after which Paris presents its artistic segment.

Tokyo Olympics: Closing ceremony marks end of behind-closed-doors Games

The Tokyo Olympics, postponed and played out behind closed doors because of the Covid pandemic, concluded with an upbeat ceremony in Japan's capital.

The Games took place without spectators and athletes were barred from venturing outside the Olympic village.

Their staging has faced local opposition and around 30 protestors jostled with police at the National Stadium before the closing ceremony.

However other locals have braved heat and warnings to watch events from afar.

Fans took in outdoor events, such as triathlon and BMX, from overpasses and other vantage points despite temperatures that reached 35C, the hottest ever recorded at an Olympics.

The Games' official sign-off, featuring ska bands, football freestylers, breakdancers and BMX riders, created more made-for-TV memories, culminating in athletes thanking the people of Japan by making a heart gesture with their hands.

A scaled-down parade of flagbearers, missing 62 of the competing nations, started proceedings in Tokyo before an air display team painted the French tricolore across the sky in Paris, the host city for 2024.

Tokyo 2020 president Seiko Hashimoto, who appeared at seven Games as a speed skater and then a track cyclist, told the athletes: "There are no words to describe what you have achieved.

"You have accepted what seemed unimaginable, understood what had to be done, and through hard work and perseverance overcome unbelievable challenges."

She added: "This has made you true Olympians."

Athletes had daily swabs to test for coronavirus and wore face masks when not eating, training or competing. After they had finished competing, they had 48 hours to leave the athletes' village.

British sprinter CJ Ujah has been suspended from competition after testing positive for a banned substance.

Ujah, 27, was part of Team GB men's 4x100m relay team which won silver at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics this month.

He has been provisionally suspended, said the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).

The AIU said a test showed the "presence/use of a prohibited substance (Ostarine and S-23)."

A UK Athletics spokesperson said the governing body does not comment on ongoing processes.

Ujah, who has yet to comment, won the 100m at the British Championships in June.

Britain's men's quartet missed out on the 4x100m title by just a hundredth of a second in Tokyo, as anchor leg runner Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake was overhauled on the line by Italy's Filippo Tortu.

The International Testing Agency (ITA) said: "The Anti-Doping Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport [CAS] will consider the matter of the finding of an Anti-Doping Rule Violation [ADRV] and the disqualification of the men's 4 x 100 relay results of the British team".

Enobosarm, or Ostarine, is listed as an anabolic agent - banned at all times - in the World Anti-Doping Agency's list of prohibited substances.

The UK Anti-Doping (Ukad) website said it has "similar effects to testosterone".

Three other athletes have been suspended after tests carried out during the Tokyo Olympics.

They are Moroccan 1500m runner Sadik Mikhou, shot putter Benik Abramyan of Georgia and Kenyan sprinter Mark Otieno Odhiambo.

British sprinter Zharnel Hughes says he wants the doping investigation into team-mate CJ Ujah to be allowed to take place "without prejudice" - but insists athletes need a clean sport.

Ujah has been provisionally suspended after a positive drugs test.

It came less than a week after he, Hughes, Richard Kilty and Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake won 4x100m relay Olympic silver in Tokyo.

Tokyo 2020 Summer: Indian Narwal wins gold medal, Singhraj Adana wins silver

India's Manish Narwal and Singhraj Adana bagged gold and silver, respectively, in the men's P4 mixed 50m pistol SHI on Saturday. The two shooters took India's tally to 15 medals at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics.

India's Manish Narwal and Singhraj Adana claimed two medals for India in men's P4 mixed 50m pistol SH1. While Manish Narwal won the gold medal, Singhraj Adana claimed the silver medal. The two shooters took India's tally to 15 medals at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics.

Manish scored a total of 218.2 in the final, creating a Paralympic record in the process of winning the gold medal. His Indian teammate Singhraj Adana just fell short, scoring 216.7 in the final.

Earlier, the two Indian shooters had a good show in the qualification round to reach the final. While Manish amassed 533-7x points, Singhraj scored 536-4x points after the end of six series.

This is also the second medal for 39-year-old Singhraj, who had won the bronze in the P1 men's 10m air pistol SH1 event on Tuesday.

Singhraj finished at the fourth position while Manish occupied the seventh spot after the end of the qualification round. Another Indian shooter, Akash failed to book the final berth as he ended with 507-3x points.

Indian shooters have claimed a haul of five medals, including two gold, in the ongoing Games. As the pistol is held with one hand only, athletes in SH1 category have an impairment affecting one arm and/or the legs, for example resulting from amputations or spinal cord injuries. P4 is a classification for the mixed 50m air pistol competition.

Some shooters compete in a seated position, while others take aim in a standing position as defined in the rules.

Tokyo Paralympics 2021, Day 13: Shuttler Krishna Nagar wins gold, India finish with 19 medals

Shuttler Krishna Nagar won gold in the men's singles SH6 event while Suhas Yathiraj settled for a silver medal in the men's singles SL4 event on the last day of action at the Tokyo Paralympics.
It took India's medal count to 19, including five gold, which is the best ever for India at the Paralympics.

India finish in top 25 at the Tokyo Paralympics

Led by five gold medals in a total of 19 medals won, India finished 24th at the Tokyo Paralympics. Since its first appearance at the Paralympics in 1968, India had won 12 medals in total till the 2016 Rio edition. The country has now massively improved upon that entire number by 7 medals at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games alone.

British sprinter CJ Ujah's 'B' sample has tested positive, confirming the result of his initial test from the Tokyo Olympics.

Ujah, 27, was part of the British men's 4x100m relay team which won silver at the rearranged 2020 Olympics.

They will now almost certainly lose those medals as a result of the tests.

He was provisionally suspended when a test taken at the Games - his 'A' sample - tested positive for banned substances Ostarine and S-23.

Ostarine is listed as an anabolic agent - banned at all times - in the World Anti-Doping Agency's (Wada) list of prohibited substances.

The UK Anti-Doping (Ukad) website said it has "similar effects to testosterone".

S23 is a Selective Androgen Receptor Modulator (Sarm), which, according to the United States Anti-Doping Agency (Usada) has "similar anabolic properties to anabolic steroids".

The case has now been referred to the Court of Arbitration for Sport Anti-Doping Division (CAS ADD).

Four-time Olympic champion Simone Biles says she "should have quit way before Tokyo" after withdrawing from five of her six finals in Japan.

In a New York Magazine interview the 24-year-old says "I should have never made another Olympic team" after "everything I've gone through for the past seven years".

Biles spoke in 2018 about being abused by team doctor Larry Nassar, who is now serving a life sentence in jail.

"It was too much," the American says.

"But I was not going to let him take something I've worked for since I was six years old.

"I wasn't going to let him take that joy away from me. So I pushed past that for as long as my mind and my body would let me."

Biles: 'I blame system that enabled Nassar abuse'
Biles was expected to win more golds at Tokyo 2020 but withdrew from the five finals, saying she had to focus on her mental health.

She later explained she had the 'twisties' - a dangerous mental block in which gymnasts lose their orientation in the air - and went on to compete on the balance beam, where she won bronze.

Biles had been seeing a therapist in the run-up to the Games and says anxiety set in when she arrived in Tokyo, in part due to coronavirus restrictions which barred fans and families from attending.

"Leading up to it, I got more and more nervous," she says. "I didn't feel as confident as I should have been with as much training as we had."

The 19-time world champion describes attempting to compete with the 'twisties' as "basically life or death", adding that after it set in mid-vault "it's a miracle I landed on my feet".

Biles also highlighted extra pressure placed on her because of her race.

"As a Black woman, we just have to be greater," she says.

"Because even when we break records and stuff, they almost dim it down, as if it's just normal."

Earlier in September Biles testified before the Senate as a committee examined shortcomings in the FBI's investigation into Nassar.

She is now back in therapy and is touring America with other members of the United States' gymnastics team, but has not yet decided if she will return to competition.

"This will probably be something I work through for 20 years," Biles says.

"No matter how much I try to forget. It's a work in progress."

Boxing, weightlifting and modern pentathlon have not been included on the initial programme for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, but could be added at a later date.

On Thursday, the International Olympic Committee session in Beijing approved a programme of 28 sports, with a "strong focus on youth".

Skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing have been included.

LA will be able to propose additional sports in 2023.

Boxing, weightlifting and modern pentathlon could be added to the programme next year if they successfully demonstrate they have addressed issues within their sports.

Boxing's international federation, the AIBA, must show it has addressed concerns around the sport's governance and the integrity of its refereeing and judging processes.

In September, an independent investigation found a system to manipulate the outcome of boxing matches by officials was in place at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Weightlifting must address the historic issue of doping within the sport, while modern pentathlon must finalise its replacement of showjumping, while increasing its appeal to young people.
