Gavaskar is arguably rated as the best Asian opener of all-time. But who all would make the place if we discuss to list down the top 5 openers to play for an Asian cricket nation in Test cricket?

Best Batting Averages by Asian Openers in Test (Min 1000 Runs)

57.34 - Rohit Sharma
50.29 - Sunil Gavaskar
50.14 - Virender Sehwag
49.16 - Abid Ali
47.10 - Saeed Anwar

Gavaskar …. then clear distance and name the others.
Look at his record against the finest sides of his time in their backyard — in Australia (5 hundreds with an average of over 50) and West Indies (7 hundreds at average of 70)
Astonishing especially in era before regular helmet use and no limits on bouncers.

Why are people mentioning Zaheer Abbas here? He was a no.3, not an opener.

Speaking of Test cricketr -

Gavaskar

Sehwag

I dont believe sunny ever played the 4 pronged attack barring once and that so happened to be his worst performance? Correct me if I am wrong.

I mean Roberts Marshall holding all together with a combo of Sylvester Clarke or Patterson or Garner.

Wow that depth for West indies. Insane

I think in 82/83 he played against an attack of Robert’s, Holding, Marshall and Garner and scored a century.
An insane attack for sure

Are you saying Gambhir and Dhawan were better than Sanath Jayasuriya?

Yes both have better avg in overall career and in testing conditions. Jayasuriya was a FTB and rubbish bowlers bully on home pitches. He was a great ODI cricketer though

Srikkanth

Lol at Srikkanth. He averaged 29 in Tests. I am sure Gambhir, Rohit, Sidhu, Vijay, Dhawan, Rahul all are better than him among Indian openers.

Majid Khan, Azhar Ali and Dilshan are also superior test openers.
