Three British Muslim siblings were left traumatised after being escorted off a plane in London and interrogated on the tarmac as armed police kept watch, after fellow passengers accused them of being members of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group.

Sakina Dharas, 24, her sister Maryam, 19, and their brother Ali, 21, were on board EasyJet flight EZY3249 from London's Stansted Airport to the Italian city of Naples on August 17.

Sakina told Al Jazeera on Tuesday that as the plane was about to take off, a crew member ordered the siblings off the aircraft and escorted them down the staircase to the tarmac, where they were met by armed police and an MI5 agent who questioned them for one hour.

Earlier, two passengers - also travelling to Naples - had told authorities that the siblings had been looking at a mobile phone screen that showed either Arabic text or the words "praise be to Allah", Sakina said.

"A passenger on your flight has claimed that you three are members of ISIS," the MI5 agent said to the siblings, according to Sakina, a clinical pharmacist.

"The minute that I saw police standing there, I was extremely emotional," she said.

"We had nothing at all [on our phones]. We don't even speak Arabic, we're [of] Indian [origin]."

Sakina added that her brother had not looked at his phone during their time at Stansted.

The only Arabic in her smartphone is within an app featuring verses from the Quran, she said, which "wasn't open" throughout their time in the airport.

During their one-hour interrogation on the tarmac, Sakina said she was asked to explain - page by page - the details of various entry stamps on her passport. She also showed the MI5 agent recent WhatsApp messages. The siblings provided answers relating to their personal lives and were questioned on their home addresses, workplaces, social media history and parents' professions.

Sakina said the agent told them that he had already performed checks on the family and was simply verifying the information, before warning her that he would be "doing more research on you, and if anything comes back, I'll be here waiting on your return".

The siblings, who are from northwest London. were then allowed back on the plane, which had been delayed.

'Nervous and embarrassed'

"I was extremely nervous and embarrassed," said Sakina, who also wrote an account of the event on her Facebook page.

"I thought, shouldn't they [the agent and police officers] be coming up [on the plane] with us, to show the other passengers that we hadn't done anything wrong, to say, 'Don't worry, it was a misunderstanding?'

"Our holiday in Italy was ruined. It played on our minds the whole time."

EasyJet confirmed the incident to Al Jazeera.

"Following concerns raised by a passenger during the boarding of flight … a member of ground staff requested the assistance of the police who took the decision to talk to three passengers at the bottom of the aircraft steps, before departure," the company said.

"The safety and security of ... passengers and crew is our highest priority which means that if a security concern is raised we will always investigate it as a precautionary measure.

"We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to the passengers."

Sakina said she and her siblings were victims of "racial profiling".

"I'm still very annoyed that someone [the accusing passengers] can get away with a blatant lie," she said, adding that she would take legal action "if I knew a way to do so".

Tbh even though I am not a Muslim, I have been regularly checked at airport just because I am brown and look like a Muslim. And you know what, I highly appreciate those officials who are trying to take extra precautions and making sure everyone reaches home safe and sound. I have nothing to hide and everythung is done for safety of others including me so why not. It will take only one crazy Isis Muslim to create another 911.

Every time they waste time with non-intelligence led wild goose chases is precious time and resources not being used on proper intelligence led policing. So if you want 'effectiveness' and 'efficacy' you should be worried. Others would rightly be worried about human rights. Wonder how far your 'tolerance' would stretch if you were being strip searched or having a cavity exam? Still believe the ends justify the means ?

Sadly there are many bigots on such airlines. They should take Emirates or some other nice airline next time. American Airline treat their customers same way and I would never take it.

There is no such thing as a 'ISIS Muslim'

There is no such thing as a 'ISIS Muslim'

Ok so ISIS folks are not Muslims. We can deny or use politically correct statements but the sad reality is that they are Muslims just like Osama, 911 attackers, Mumbai attackers, Paris attackers, London attackers, Nairobi attackers, Munich attackers etc etc

Whenever a paranoid person accuses someone on the plane to be a terrorist, that same person should be escorted off the plane as well as the person being accused and then be questioned thoroughly as to what the hell he/she saw or heard that warranted the accusation in the first place.

Way too many times these paranoid accusations with no basis are made ('the person spoke Arabic', 'he had a beard', 'there was Arabic writing on the phone', 'that Quadratic equation looked like ISIS-y') which wastes time and effort of the security officials and the victim not to mention causes emotional distress. In the meantime the accuser gets away with it scot-free while the plane takes, but at least in this case the flight was delayed.

I appreciate even more that I am never checked at airports even though I am a Pakistani and Muslim origin. I could have blown all those airports sky high if I wanted, but since I'm usually on the way to a vacation it's not really top of my bucket list.

This would be the most reasonable thing to do.

that's because u are a good person. there are significant number of people who are nowhere as humane and would like to kill you the moment they get a chance.

Sadly 911 attackers who were of Muslim origin and had their masterminds caught in Pakistan were on the way to blowing up people, vacation was not really top of their bucket list.

Its common sense, if I accuse my neighbor of being a terrorist no police, security or public safety official is going to just interrogate the accused and just leave me alone. Same protocols should be applied here, or soon enough every Trump minion will accuse a brown guy of being a terrorist just to avoid being on the same plane as them, because they know they will get to stay on while the brown guy will be escorted off.

blah blah blah Munich attackers etc etc

Hey smart guy, the Munich attacker was an Iranian who was an admirer of Hitler and Anders Breivik. Kinda like how many of your countrymen blushed whenever Breivik cited Hindutva and the struggle of Hindus against Islam in his manifesto, and that many people in India still hold Hitler in admiration.

such an awsome response. Loosely tie in one lunatic from half across the world to hindus to make excuse for regularly programmed terrorism brought to you by purer than pure muslims.

When Hindu bigots on social media make common cause with anti-Muslim fascists halfway across the world, don't be upset when one goes above and beyond and murders children at a youth camp in the name of your twisted cause.

not really sure what being a brevik and hitlet admirer has to do with him being a terrorist. nobody here has said brevik is not one.

You misunderstood my post. I took issue with him citing the Munich attack as an example of Islamic extremism, when it clearly wasn't the case.

And no one can accuse me of being an apologist for Islamic extremism here.

may they are thinking along anti terrorism lines as muslims have beenmore renowned for terrorism in the past two decades more than anything else. you the stuff you blah blahed in rahulrezz's post. some thing for you think about.

I "blah blah'ed" the rest because it was just that: garbage. And please, how has the past 15 years of draconian anti-terrorism legislation managed to curtail terrorism? If anything it has gotten worse.

These things do no favours to the alienation of communities more and more away from the mainstream population.

Answer me. Wasn't he a Muslim.

Yes that is why there are so many Islamic terrorists. If only people treat us well all would be good in the Muslim world

Isn't it funny that Muslims/British Muslims seem to have become a nationality in itself according to the media over the last few years? These guys have UK passports and are of Indian origin, yet Christopher Thomson fro Manchester and Mahesh Sharma from Pune don't give a damn. It's poor Parvez Shaikh from Peshawar and Naif Bashar from Cairo who appear to be under maximum pressure.

This is partly a problem of their own making. Muslims don't do themselves any favours in this regard by latching themselves onto any and every issue where some random Islamic person is caught in his personal tangle - it just becomes easy for the rest of the world - and in this case, the media, to throw a uniform net over the lot of them I suppose.

This is why I really appreciate when Indians like yourself get stopped and delayed while to date I am usually waved through. Touch wood may it stay like this.

did you not read the OP? they were patted down, went through security and BOARDED the damn plane. Had it been done before they got on the plane it would have been understandable.

Muslims playing victim card for the situation caused by Islamic Terrorism and blame non Muslims for being cautious.

Pretty traumatic stuff for the family, only based on some Arabic text on a smartphone and apparently that is threatening and related to ISIS, wow how stupid can some people be. If there had been good cause to report the passengers, then fair enough, but clearly there wasn't here. They should sue.

What kind of ridiculous logic is this ??

It just shows your mindset clearly - no surprise from a Indian Modi supporter.
