Umar Akmal versus Virat Kohli

bump

Sir,can we have your thoughts on Umar's knock??Match winning. This is how he would have smashed minnows on these dead pitches if he had played on these pitches.

It proved nothing.you are embarassing yourself. Akmal played well today. But still long way to go to be compared with Kohli. better you shut until he scores consistantly.

Nice Inns today by Umar, needs to play more like this where he plays himself in and plays good proper cricket shots.

If you read few pages you will notice that I repeated it many times that both have different jobs, both play at different positions and both have a different role but some of the users here completely Ignore Umar's talent. They say he is only a slogger but he shows in every game that he has got the class needed for a good batsman.Virat Kohli is talented but so is Umar. But difference with Umar is that he is a match winner. When he is on song even the world's best bowling attack can not stop him.

Kohli as of now seems to be a minnow basher and mentally very weak player proved by his failures against Pakistan & important games.

Tum log kisi haal mein khush nahi ho.

If he would have failed then you guys would have bashed him for failing and now when he was the highest scorer his innings become not so important because he played that against Kenya and hence he is a minnow basher.

Hadh hoti hai.

Come on Guys! I mentioned it earlier that he'd do well against the likes of Zimbabwe, kenya etc. A minnow basher like Imran nazir.

Kohli made a 100 just a few days back, against a relatively more established attack of Bangladesh and yet people rate this brainless slogger ahead of him.

Lets see how he fares against the better opponents Sri Lanka, Newzealand and Australia.

Like you said we'll just have to wait and see. Likewise we will also see how Kohli copes with the better attacks as Bangladesh were ordinary on a very flat pitch.

Well many Pakistani fans are to be honest dumb .How come u people still find the guts to compare Akmal to Kohli.
Umer is miles away from Kohli at the moment .Please use some common sense while going in support of national team.

what do you mean match winning? how many match winning innings he has played so far? today's innings is match winning means? how abt kohli's innings against bangla other day..

world's best bowling attack can not stop? when did we last time see him taking apart world's best bowlign attack? dont say kenya's bowling was world class. even my league bowlers can bowl better than some of the balls bowled by kenyan bowlers today.

Kohli as of now seems to be a minnow basher and mentally very weak player proved by his failures against Pakistan & important games.

lol. you must be sarcastic right? dont reply by saying umar trashed one of the top teams today.

Not miles but only yards. Umar is more of a stroke player whereas Kholi is more of touch player both are good.

kohli is a better player right now..but he wont win you a match on his own

The most over-rated phrase on PP. IMO someone who scores 100s consitatnly wins more matches for his country than someone who scores a quick 50 every few matches

Virat still trumps Umar Akmal by some distance. One innings prove nothing.

Not at all my friend..Ill cite you an example:

http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/match/64941.html

tendulkar makes 123

inzi makes 63..wins the match on the last ball...gets the MOM award...

It depends on what context you make the runs in not how much you make.

kohli and umar have different roles , kohli is a consolidator whereas umar akmal's role is slogger and finisher. You can not really compare two players with different roles.

Akmal fails yet again :))

this guy just can't play for a string of 6 balls with his head over his shoulders...

This guy was playing to set a target and was not selfish enough like the Indians, thats why he lost his wicket because he had to hit out.

Do you have any cricketing sense by the way?

Umar Akmal plays well when he does not try to be too smart.

Whenever he is dancing around on the pithc he fails

so people scoring 50s or 100s are selfish. They should get out before 20 to show they are playing for the country? Is that lala fan's logic?

He failed again but you have to look a the situation he was in. He came out a situation where he had to think about the team total rather then his individual performance he had no choice but attack the bowlers and slog which isn't part of his natural game.

And I don't even know how you can compare Kohli and Umar Akmal both come out to bat at a different position, different roles and play in a different situation.

And what do you mean he fails 'again'? I'm pretty sure he suceeded in the last game?

Too much people read into his performance against a miserable kenyan side, the guy couldnt handle bit of murali spin

Does this thread have to be bumped everytime either Kohli or Umar do well/do not do well?

Umar Akmal Just plays big innings after 4-5 Games to Keep His Place justified..And Against the big teams he always.....fix...I mean to say fail....or fix....same thing for him..

Kiddo, if people come in the last 10 overs do you want then try to hit out or construct an innings and score 50 and 100?

Darren Bravo has to be in this thread !

He is twice the butcher compared to Akmal
Twice the class of Kohli

Not gonna add anything to the comparison between the two, because its an insult to Kohli

All I wanna say is that Shafiq deserves a go in the next match in the place of Umar. If Shafiq can get dropped for one bad performance, why not Umar?

Probably not gonna happen, because of his surname but why do fans keep defending him like he's their little brother?

He was easily struggling because he is the type of batsmen that needs to settle! He needs to come up the order?

Was anyone else getting the feeling that he would have been destructive today if had a few overs to play to settle him?

No he wouldn't be struggling today had Kenya been bowling...

Remember when Yousuf sent the idiot one down in a test match...the refrain back then by the slogger's diehards was that he is not a top order batsman and should bat lower down the order...

Same garbage batting no matter what number he bats at...

+1 ,agree with you both completely

and just to add,he was facing Murali for the first time and he had no Idea about his bowling who has taken over 700+ wickets. He had to score quick because there were only 6-8 overs were left so we should see the situation in which he gets out.He plays for the team not for the stats again

Yep, this is logical and correct strategy which is very fair as well.

But whats gonna happen is, we will stick with Umar Akmal for the game against Canada where he will score another unconvincing 50 60 odd runs to be qualified to play against NZ. He will fail against NZ but we will stick with against Zim where he will score another 50 odd so we will stick with him and then he will fail against Australia.
I dunno why folks are comparing Kohli to Umar, I personally think that Shafiq is better than Akmal in all aspects of the game.

We had a situation today where a valid comparison can be made between the two.

Kohli, proper batsman, asked to be bat like a slogger in the very same way Umer Akmal has been (mis)used in this World Cup to date and he looked, through no fault of his own, sketchy.

I rate Kohli but Umer Akmal shouldn't be judged given the role he's been asked to play.

To this fellow PP'er...

Akmal fails yet again :))

this guy just can't play for a string of 6 balls with his head over his shoulders...

And now I would like to add...

Kohli came out at a position/situation similiar to what Umar Akmal comes out at, in every game.

There was no difference because Kohli had no chance to focus on the team's total and not his own individual runs and had no choice but slog which poor Umar Akmal has to do and guess what?

Kohli failed at that ;-).

i was just about to post similar ...... lol u beat me to it......but yeah compared the two at same position.... Kohli doesn't look the same as he does at #3 or #4

+1 completely agree

umar should bat in top 5 ....

Having a look at today's innings Kholi def cant slog he looks like a proper batsmen but Akmal more of a slogger who cant bat a bit.....

What are you kiddin'? Umar had like 5 more overs than Kohli yesterday to set himself, Kohli came at the 46th over and had to start hitting straight away. While Umar came at 41st over, and could have settled down by the 45th over and then attacked.

England proved today Kohli is nothing more than a tail ender slogger. He is meantally weak who always fails in important games . No wonder he has not played any test matches because he is not good enough.

Kohli is not in the test team, because he is not needed yet as their batting is so strong

Kohli was averaging 79 in South Africa in the ODI series prior to the world cup

The quality of posting has really deteriorated lately on PP

Umer Akmal faced 7 balls before the final power play was taken at the beginning of the 43rd over.

Thats not 5 overs.

Come on Itduzz thats a bit harsh....

http://www.espncricinfo.com/icc_cricket_worldcup2011/engine/match/433567.html

Look at when Younis khan got out- 40.5 overs. Umar was the next man in.
Re-read my post. The powerplay over was taken after the 42nd over. He was not expected to play himself in for the next 5 overs for a final push, he was expected to slog after facing 7 balls. He isn't that type of player and neither is Kohli.

That is the job of the likes of Razzaq, Afridi, Yusuf Pathan and as such neither Kohli or Akmal should be judged harshly.

Now then???

That is why I say don't compare them both coz both have different role at the moement:)

Its always tough when you are asked to score run per ball and also score few boundaries from ball 1.

Sour grapes!

If anything he is as good a player, if not better, as Virat and more of a stroke-maker who can turn it on in the last 10.

Virat failed miserably today..which is an indication that he is a player limited to 3 or 4 in the order i.e. tuk tuk tuk tuk.

Which isn't a bad thing, but then he is very one-dimensional. More of a Dravid then Tendulkar or Ganguly.

Yes, but we already have a Tendulkar, a Sehwag, and some big hitters down the order. Kohli is a good solid anchor batsmen, hopefully he can play a similar role to what Misbah plays for Pakistan.

Yes and thats pretty much it.

Umar Akmal can both anchor an innings during the middle overs, at a good rate, and turn it on in the last 10.

The only thing Umar does not have is the ability to turn the heat on from ball 1 like an Afridi, Razzaq, Dhoni etc. but once he gets his eye in then he can even hit the likes of Tait and Nannes for sixes

Yes. but can he score runs consistantly? He is ranked 42 in ODIs. Kohli is ranked 2nd.

Why are you depending on rankings to tell you how good a player is? The rankings reflect form not ability. I agree though Kohli is a better player at this stage, plays for consistently and scores at will.

Akmal needs to find his spot in the order and form because he does have great ability with the bat and is not merely a slogger.

Umar Akmals Highest ranking score is about 580.. What are we saying here.. Is he always out of form?

Harbhajan has hit sixes to likes of Moh. Aamir, Morkel, Johnson and Bollinger.. Does that mean he is better batman then someone like Kohli?

As it has been mentioned previously.. Akmal should only be compared with likes of Afridi, Harbhajan, or Graham Swann. He needs to score runs to be compared with likes of Kohli.

Umar Akmals Highest ranking score is about 580.. What are we saying here.. Is he always out of form?

More like he hasn't scratched the surface of what he can do. He has no proper grooming or coaching and is still young. No one's arguing that Kohli is better, that's obvious.

Virat Kholi's top scores:

So the bulk of his runs have come against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. And the ones against non-subcontinental teams have come on sub-continental tracks (excluding the two in SA).

The 100 against Aus, I suggest you look at the Aus bowling attack in that match.

So wait a minute...
He scores against Bangladesh: Your argument "Its a minnow, does not count"
He scores against SL: Your argument "Its a subcontinent team, does not count"
He scores against SA in SA in hostile conditions in 2 of the 5 games he plays: Your argument "Its just two games"
He scores against Aus: Your argument "Bad bowling"

Those are 4 test playing nations btw and incl India (his team) that leaves just 3 more test level nations...

Buddy, sounds like you dont want to give any credit, whatsoever... Kinda bitter... :asif

I am just putting things into perspective. Virat Kholi is nothing special (and I am not saying that Umar Akmal is either)

You have to look at the quality of the attack against whom he scored and the pitches he has played on.

If Umar Akmal was to hammer 4 hundreds against Bangla on flat tracks they would mean nothing compared to a 50 hit on a track where there is pace and bounce against a decent attack.

I think you re wrong on both counts... Kohli for his age, the temperament he displays is really really special...

But you also discount his innings against SA in SA... And playing SL in SL is no mean feat...

I will take Virat Kohli over Umar Akmal every day of the week and twice on Sundays. It's utter non-sense to even compare the two. Kohli is a disciplined player with a very strong batting technique blended with sheer focus and an intelligent brain, something that a hyped up dumb joker like umar akmal can only dream about.

No, I gave him credit for his 2 innings in SA - read my post. SA bowling is toothless. Only Malinga and Murlidaran are good in the whole attack.

Fact is that due to huge number of games in the sub-continent pitches against the likes of Bangladesh and SriLanka, his average looks good
