"Asad Shafiq is young, fit" : Azhar Ali defends selection on commentary during Nat T20 Cup

Azhar getting very touchy about criticism of Asad on commentary.

I'd like people to defend me like Azhar defended Shafiq here ... Friendship goals :(

Azhar has the Friends theme song playing in his head while defending Asad. I'll be there for youuuuu, when the rain starts to pourrr :asad1

i like how the other comm, zafar saeed maybe, handled it. would have been easy to kowtow to the test captain, but he didnt refrain from laying his argument out.

asad shafiq is one of the worst things to happen to the pak test team. fair enough if azhar wants to defend his mate on air, but the point is this is why he keeps on being selected despite never really contributing to a win in years.

Misbah created these leaches.

:))) Just as I watching the clip, the commie confirmed what I was thinking, "that was 10 years" ago to Azhar after he started talking about his innings with Karachi or something.

Azhar also said he is "young", these guys are so shameless. Looks like Azhar starting to feel the pressure after the Misbah sacking. Sooner all these deadwood are removed from the national side, the better.

This is nuts

His point basically is that the has beens need to be playing these emerging talent tournaments to stay in form for Test cricket, and then guide the youth in that format.

Right, the issue clearly is that some players are only restricted to Test cricket, and Pakistan clearly isn’t playing enough of that. They need 12-15 Tests a year if possible

I actually agree about the fact that Asad should be utilized in guiding younger players. But players will benefit more from being in a team that is actually winning, than from losing but having a senior telling you to cheer up (who themselves are playing and failing). Those people are difficult to look up to.

For T20 and List A, Shafiq should have been rested from the Sindh first XI, working with Basit Ali as assistant-coach cum mentor, or been made captain of the second XI.

He should play First Class though, obviously.

Asad Shafiq is not even a T20 player. Why is he playing in this competition? How he is going to guide young players when he plays like a youngster at international level despite having years of experience.

I don't mind experienced players playing but they need to pull their weight.

This clip sums up everything wrong with our cricket. Asad Shafiq was part of World T20 winning squad so what? He deserves free runs forever. And what guidance is Azhar talking about will Asad give to youngsters.
Lost all respect for Azhar. This is not charity. You are playing for country. Perform or perish. And we expect such people to give chances to youngsters. Still cant fathom this.

This is what I mean by these cliques in Pakistan cricket.

Coach, captain, senior players - you scratch my back and I will scratch yours.

I was listening to him live. While nobody wants or expects him to criticize players as he is currently the national captain in one format but, going so much out of the way to defend someone doesn't appear good either.

Defense wasn’t even based completely on facts. Yes Asad is fit but 34 is not a young age for a cricketer and definitely not the age where he can completely transform his white ball game to something extraordinary. Even his red ball game has been in a steep decline for last few years.

Azhar needs to be completely neutral when in the commentary box. His views regarding Asad are definitely worrying as they put light on the larger issue in Pakistan cricket in which seniority of “some” is considered some holy thing which nobody can talk about or ask questions why arent they performing as per the experience and still in the team.

Aim of the young players should be to perform so that nobody can question them but, some senior and ex players have created a trend to play for long enough so that you become a senior after which performance or lack of it doesn’t impact your selection in the team. Lack of accountability of performance stops players from growing further in their roles.

Also why this elite seniors club only consists of batsmen, does experience of Junaid Khan and even Gul for last 7 years doesnt count? By the looks of it senior batsmen can get away with everything but senior bowlers need to justify their place. Some tough questions can be asked from Azhar regarding these things and with such comments he is doing no good to his captaincy tenure. :rizwan

The reason for this ‘young’ schtick we keep hearing is Misbah.

Earlier the impression for cricketers was that their career enters a decline at 33 and by 35-36 you are wrapping it up.

But now those timelines have advance by 5-7 years and our cricketers genuinely think that 40 is when you start to wrap up your career.

So using that metric Shafiq still have 25-30% of his career left

Imagine if hes being defended in T20s, he must be unquestionable in tests until he retires!

Huge respect to Tariq Saeed for questioning Asad Shafiq, and presenting his view logically and with decorum. It cannot be easy to stand your ground to the test captain. Well done!

You have to see the other side of coin also Suppose he says against Asad
Azhar is from Lahore
Lahore vs Karachi
Precisely Punjab vs Sindh ie punjabi subjugat the other parts of country.....
Media belongs to karachi
The victim card will start

Reeks of self-preservation from Azhar. All the arguments against Shafiq (age, consistency, recent performance) are the exact same arguments that can be used against Azhar.

And the same point Azhar used in favour of Shafiq (seniority, guidance and past performances) are what works in Azhar's favour.

All of these guys are looking out for one another interests because that is how they collectively survive.

This highlights why Azhar Ali needs to go as captain and how players are repeatedly selected inspite of zero performances

Contrast this to IK. One of the first things he did as captain was to drop his elder cousin, idol and someone he looked up to his entire life ie Majid Khan because he knew he was far past it. Majid was so upset with IK that he was not on talking terms with him for a good 2-3 decades after that.

My background music to this whole "commentary"

#froiendship goals damn near made me wince

After hearing this I am in the process of calling, hooking up with all my friends from KG to college

Yaar ho toh aisa :ua

This piece of commentary should really be plastered all over twitter already. We already knew deep down that Asad Shafiq has been getting preferential treatment for years, but this piece where Azhar Ali defends the indefensible is the cement to that theory.

Pakistan have the young talent neccesary to move on from these frauds, but you already know who Misbah will be backing.

I think Asad Shafiq would have to shoot someone in the middle of Minto Park before Azhar Ali would think of replacing him.

Both need binning.

Junaids Sums up all ur theories

It saddens me.

I know that Azhar Ali is a nice guy, but that he is completely dominated - controlled - by Misbah-ul-Haq.

Until this happened I found myself thinking "now that Misbah is no longer Chief Selector, hopefully Azhar Ali will realise that he is so far in his age-related decline that he is ruining his own reputation and the team's balance, and he will retire with dignity before the tour of New Zealand".

I have previously used the idea of FIFA computer game-style scores to illustrate how and why Azhar, Asad and Fawad are damaging the Test team. I have actually refined that since I first dabbled in it.

Azhar Ali:
Lifetime Peak rating 85 (90 home, 80 away)
2018 rating aged 33: 55 (65 home, 45 away)
2019 rating aged 34: 50 (60 home, 40 away)
2020 rating aged 35: 49 (58 home, 40 away)

Asad Shafiq
Lifetime Peak rating 75 (80 home, 70 away)
2018 rating aged 32: 65 (70 home, 60 away)
2019 rating aged 33: 60 (65 home, 55 away)
2020 rating aged 34: 50 (55 home, 45 away)

The whole point of including very old batsmen in a Test team is that - like Alastair Cook - you only include them for as long as they are performing consistently, and not a day longer.

A young batsman can get more chances, because they can develop and because they have the potential to improve.

But an old batsman has to be a very short-term prospect, for only as long as he is passing 50 every second or third innings.

In Pakistan it is the wrong way round. If you are "senior" you are almost undroppable.

Just goes to show how deep rooted this horrid senior culture is

Theres cliques in the team and you can literally get away with being a tailender if ur in with the coach and captain Azhar has a hundreds excuses for asad and like misbah has for azhar

I wrote the sentences below 3 years and 3 months ago!

if only Azhar Ali had followed the advice?

………………………………………………………….
This is what I would do if I was Mickey Arthur.

I would say the following to Azhar Ali:

"Congratulations on a wonderful year. I've been proud to have you in the team I coach.

It's time for us to look forward and try to plan the next stage of your career.

As you know, you are the same age as Alastair Cook and AB De Villiers. It probably seems strange to you that their careers are coming to an end while you are in such awesome form. But I'd like to talk a little about that.

Misbah and Younis were great servants to Pakistan cricket and they saved us from disgrace. They were the best trainers we had, the fittest players we had. Younis was probably the greatest ever Pakistan batsman. They were brilliant role models to young players like you.

But I'm not sure whether you noticed what happened to them as batsmen when they become older than anyone else in world cricket. They still scored some big innings, especially in Asia, but if you think back to South Africa, to England, to Australia, I think something else happened.

Younis kept his average up, but he failed in 5 innings out of 6 in South Africa, in 6 innings out of 7 in England and in 8 innings out of 10 in Australia and New Zealand.

Think back. It's true, isn't it? You were there, Azhar!

And the consistency of those Younis Khan failures meant that we lost 8 of those 10 Test matches.

This happens to every batsman outside Asia. You reach a certain age and you fail much more often than you succeed, even if your occasional big innings keep your average up.

I'm telling you this Azhar because that is why Alastair Cook and AB De Villiers are at the end of the road. Soon you will be the oldest batsman left in Test cricket.

I know that you are the best batsman in the team. But I also know that sooner or later - I hope much later - this will happen to you.

Like Cook, that's why I'm relieved that you are not the new captain. I know you could do it, but I want you to focus on keeping your batting world class for as long as possible, without the worries of captaincy.

Take every Test series one at a time. As long as you are performing, you will be the first batsman named in the team.

Where I'm different to the people who went before me is that I don't think we can afford for two veteran batsmen to lose form at the same time. I want you as the only older batsman in the team. That's why there is no road back for Salman Butt, even though he is your age. You stayed clean and he didn't, so you are the one who stays as the senior batsman. It's also why there will be no Fawad Alam.

In Australia, many generations of cricketer have been influenced by Ian Chappell, who is a great believer in going out at the top. Don't wait until your performances are declining. When you are not the batsman you used to be, go. Don't wait to be dropped.

That would be great advice for you and every other Pakistan cricketer.

Make the most of your ability and your career. At this late stage, when you are 32, don't bother with the captaincy, just enjoy the time left to you as a batsman.

But once you think you can't guarantee yourself at least 35 runs in 3/4 of your innings outside Asia, that's when it will be time to call it a day."

Azhar Ali was not in a position to give him preferential treatment over the years. Misbah and Mickey Arthur were.

what a joke, atleast the likes of afridi, akhtar, razzaq were actual watch winners in their hey days, the likes of azhar and shafiq have always been mediocre. How shameless do you have to be to spout stuff like this on air. Really wish rameez was on air with him at the time and had taken him to the cleaners.

Shows a major problem within the pakistani setups, whether domestic level or international level. Need a strong chief selector to remedy this problem an instill a ruthless culture of team before teammates.

Micheal hussey wanted one last ODI tour at home to say goodbye, CA dropped him to build for the future, and guess what they ended up winning the 2015 WC.

The way Azhar is talking appears as if he is a T20 great himself.

The examples he gave to counter the argument:
Hafeez is still playing. No evidence about form, average.
Asad has played 70 odd tests. No evidence once again about form, average.

Criteria is clearly quantity over quality.

Generally, a lot of Pakistanis prefer personal benefits & friendships over country. Azhar is no different.

That was good from the commie Thats what you want not yes men There should be some pressure n accountability

I only wished he quizzed azhar a bit more on shafiq n threw a few stats at him too as to how awful shafiqs been lately
