Shahid Afridi will represent Quetta Gladiators in what will be his farewell HBL Pakistan Super League 7 after participating for Multan Sultan’s last year, it was confirmed today.

<div style="width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 50%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/e/tfaoc3" frameborder="0" width="100%" height="100%" allowfullscreen style="width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;"></iframe></div>

"As you all know, I have played for almost every team in the PSL and this is my last PSL season, and its a matter of great joy for me that I will be playing my last season for Quetta Gladiators" : Shahid Afridi

Also moving from Sultan to Gladiators is England’s James Vince and, as part of this blockbuster trade, Multan Sultans will take Quetta’s Diamond and Silver round picks, respectively.

In another major trade, player of the National T20 Iftikhar Ahmed has joined Quetta after being part of Islamabad United for the 2021 season. He has swapped teams with wicketkeeper/batter Azam Khan, who has moved to Islamabad United from Quetta Gladiators.

Shahid Afridi: “I am excited to join Quetta Gladiators, a side that has had a roller-coaster ride in the past few events despite winning the title in 2019. In my final HBL PSL event, it will my dream and wish to sign off with another HBL PSL trophy after tasting success with Peshawar Zalmi in 2017.

“HBL PSL is an event that encourages and inspires a player to give his very best. I will use the same motivation to help my team and put up performances that can help us achieve our event objectives.”

Iftikhar Ahmed: “It has been a difficult decision to move from Islamabad United, but looking ahead to my future in T20 cricket that is linked to the Pakistan team, I thought this was the best move. I am grateful to the Islamabad United management for their support and understanding, as they have continued to stand behind me in all my decisions.

“I am thrilled to be rejoining Shahid Afridi at Quetta Gladiators after 2017, when we last played together in HBL PSL. Quetta Gladiators include a number of my contemporaries with whom I have played lot of cricket. I am sure the HBL PSL 7 will be an exciting and entertaining event, and I can make a positive impact through my batting, bowling and fielding.”

The HBL PSL Draft 2022 will be held at the High Performance Centre in Lahore on Sunday, 12 December, with the event to kick-off at 3pm. Each side will come to the draft with a maximum of eight player retentions from the last event.

So azam gonna be under a professional coach this time not just his father

Gladiators are looking strong now with Vince in the top order and Iftikhar, Nawaz and Afridi in lower order. They may retain Faf as well, so it seems like they are shaping up a good team this year.

IU traded Iftikhar for Azam, like seriously? Anyways, he may not play in the final 11 as IU already had a couple of good keepers last season (Rohail, Akhlaq). Lets see if they retain any of them.

This also means that Moin may not coach QG this season because if he was the coach, he would not have allowed this trade of Azam.

Whoa... not a good move from Sultans to give James Vince to Quetta. That strengthens them up and Islamabad United giving Ifti isn't good either.

Excellent of QG to rope in Ifthikhar.

However, I don't think they should have let Azam go.

I think he will do really well this season.

Shahid Afridi speaking to the media:

"Sarfraz Ahmed has always been one of my favourite captains - he is aggressive and has positive body language; A captain needs to lead from the front and that is a quality in Sarfaraz as well"

"I am hopeful that this season with Sarfaraz and Quetta Gladiators will be a good one for me"

According to media reports, Shahid Afridi has asked Quetta Gladiators to excuse him from the bio-secure bubble - apparently Afridi has told the management that he is suffering from back pain and that a relative of his wife has passed away.

Gladiators should just replace them

And he is back in the bubble but cannot play for 3 days as needs to do isolation.

Star all-rounder Shahid Khan Afridi is set to miss at least two matches of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) seventh season due to a back spasm, it was learnt on Wednesday.

With permission of his franchise Quetta Gladiators, the former Pakistan captain had briefly left the bio-secure bubble on Wednesday to get treatment for a back spasm, QG manager Azam Khan told Business Recorder.

"Afridi visited a hospital to get the treatment for his back pain. He has now returned to the hotel to redo the three-day mandatory quarantine as per the PSL Covid-19 protocol," the manager said.

He added that the star cricketer will be missing in action for at least two Quetta matches, scheduled on January 28, and 29.

Earlier, a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) spokesperson had confirmed that the cricketer could leave the bio-secure bubble after permission from his team management.

“The franchises are managing their bubbles ahead of the tournament,” the official said, adding that the start cricketer does not need PCB’s permission in this regard.

“However, he [Afridi] will have to undergo another three-day isolation and return two negative tests before rejoining the bio-secure bubble at any stage of the tournament,” he added.

Watched highlights of him practising hit wicket with Faulkner. Not one ball hit the stumps.

Hard job to stay fit. Probably now makes it easier picking Umar in the team.

He's here!

bowled awful today, shouldn't be playing, hurting a chance for someone else - should be focusing on becoming a coach

No room for emotions in professional sports. He is done now

Got destroyed by a player who couldnt hit any other bowler. Embarrassing.

He might retire by tomr and it would be hilarious that out of all the batsmen, he got destroyed by Azam khan.

Worst t20 bowling figures for Afridi

Afridi epitomized what was wrong with Pakistan cricket in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Mediocre player was the start of the team. He was only a great player in T20s.

What the hell are the coaches and captain thinking?

Who selected a 45 year old retired player who has just come out of isolation and throws them straight into the deep end.

Shahid afridi idar aooo.

Should had happened.

Still his batting is to come

It's a gamble by QG to pick him for PSL7.

On today's showing it could be one that backfires.

Let's see.

Shahid Afridi was at the wrong end of the stick when he went for 67 runs from his four overs, the most expensive figures in HBL PSL history.

Lala needs to go and make way for a youngster to get picked for his PSL team. This is unacceptable.

I don't think even he thought it would be so bad....

Most runs conceded in an innings in PSL history:

67 - Shahid Afridi today
65 - Zafar Gohar in 2021
62 - Shaheen Shah Afridi in 2019

The only thing going for Afridi was his bowling. His batting has always been poor. Now his bowling is atrocious too. This bang average cricketer is only playing because of his popularity, just like he played for Pakistan for 20 years.

Looked visibly unfit and fatigued.

Shouldn't have rushed him into the playing eleven so soon. Post Covid fatigue tends to be quite lengthy in some people.

He's done as a player. Relying on him as a finisher would be foolish. But QG management isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. They should use him as an opener like Sunil Narine. If he gets lucky, he will get a few boundaries. Cause he doesn't waste time and gets out.

For me personally, it was quite sad watching him get carted around today. He has been one name synonymous with Pak Cricket since the 96 and he used to be really jubilant while bowling and in peak would play with batters with his googlies and the faster ones. He got 2 in 2 so many times.

Wow! Thanks Afridi for bowling trash to Azam Khan. Now this unfit player can play another 10 innings!

Unlucky and unsuccessful Debut for Afridi.

Even he seems to be not be able to stop QG free fall atm.

This looks like a psl too far for lala Lets see

Sarfarz shouldvw tried other options Just cos hes afridi he doesnt have to be bowled his full quota

He has been unfit before the start of PSL. Clearly shows he he isn't matchfit yet and needs more games at a lower level.

COVID-19 made it only worse not allowing him to practice with others.

I wonder if Sarfaraz will have the courage to drop him if needed, move him down the order or not bowl him.

i noticed in the match every time he got hit for a boundary, Sarfraz never shouted at him nor he spoke to Afridi, just put his gloves to his mouth and was thinking quietly.

Sensible if true.

I am surprised he is still playing and Quetta is still selecting him.

He is around 45 now (real age).

Rest after 1 match.

That's not a good sign at all.

I wonder if he'll last the full tournament.

Afridi's career should have been over 8-9 years ago, but due to his popularity, he is still playing at 45.

Would you believe it?

He is in the XI this evening. Lets hope he does better.

2 wickets for the man of the moment!

Lala Masterclass today, forced Hales run out.

Got the wicket of Shadab and Azam all departed in the same Over.

Old memories came back there.
