The Legend of Maula Jatt (remake)

I enjoyed the performances of Fawad, Hamza Ali Abbasi and the actor who played Mooda.

They all nailed their respective roles.

The guy who isn't getting much recognition is Gohar who played the character of Maakho. He excelled in his evil role and kudos to the guy playing him.

I've seen a lot of people mentioning Gohar Rasheed, even comparing to Heath Ledger-as-Joker, in fact out of all actors his name pops up the most after that of Hamza Ali Abbassi, even ahead of Fawad Khan from what I see.

It's Ali Azmat as Gogi whom I found interesting yet not that much appreciated, his "overacting" was needed as a way to keep some of the old Punjabi movie touch.

In the trailer didn’t even realize that’s Ali Azmat :))) well done to him

During the whole movie I didn't realize it was Ali Azmat! He was great in his role.

This movie was exceptional. Thinking of watching it again

The Legend of Maula Jatt has opened to packed but limited cinemas across Pakistan. The film, which has managed to garner an attractive number of cinemagoers to theatres, has been well received by the audience. However, the film is only being screened at particular theatres; namely Atrium and Cue cinemas in Karachi and Lahore respectively.

Patrons have been inquiring as to why the much-awaited film hasn't been released in the metropolis' busiest cinema, Nueplex. Now, the owners of the latter have set the record straight.

"As a cornerstone of our film exhibition policy, Nueplex Cinemas has always been at the forefront when it comes to screening Pakistani films," the statement, shared on Nueplex's Twitter handle, read. "Over the years, a number of box office records have also been set due to the business we have generated for local films."

The statement further read, "We feel that it is highly unfortunate that the distributor of the title, The Legend of Maula Jatt asking for exhibition terms which are out of industry norms. Such rigid terms cannot be afforded by exhibitors, especially during times of economic instability."

Adding on, Nueplex shared, "We were hoping for a fairer approach in the future, as we are always here to welcome and screen any Pakistani film with open arms." Ticket prices for The Legend of Maula Jatt reportedly increased for the initial 11 days. They will drop down to regular prices afterward, as per reports.

A reboot of Yunus Malik’s 1979 cult classic Maula Jatt, the film is a re-telling of the story of the rivalry between Maula Jatt and Noori Natt. Directed by Lashari, The Legend of Maula Jatt stars Khan, Hamza Ali Abbasi, Mahira Khan, Humaima Malick, Mirza Gohar Rasheed, Faris Shafi, Ali Azmat, Nayyer Ejaz, Shafqat Cheema, Raheela Agha, Zia Khan and Saima Baloch.

One of the best films from the subcontinent in a long time. High quality. Possibly out of all the popular Pakistani and Indian films, one of the best ever.

2.5 hours of this > Entire GoT franchise. It’s about time desis got their own combat type movie with swords and warfare that does the culture and heritage justice.

Acting and fight choreography was on point.

Pretty boy Fawad Khan is just not cut out for roles such as these. Came across meetha for such a tough character.

Nah man, he was great for the role. Maula may come off as a tough guy only, but there’s quite a bit of depth to him in that behind the cold exterior is a scared boy haunted by his past. He pulled it off very well.

Also I gotta ask, what is the obsession of every director to always cast Mahira Khan? Is she the only woman left in Pakistan or what? There’s many talented quality actresses in Pakistan, but in every major film from Pak worth watching, it’s almost always her playing the main love interest.

At this point it feels like a veteran Pakistani cricketer being selected again and again when there’s many more players who should’ve gotten a shot by now.

Even Indian cinema at its peak had like 3-5 main actresses featuring in the most popular films… it was never a monopoly held by one actress.

Probably a way for the producers to attract more audiences.

In the Western city where I watched the movie the cinema was full of Pakistanis/Indians but you could see many ladies even with kids who obviously didn’t come for the movie itself (not the usual public for this kind of movie) as much as for the Fawad/Mahira "jodi"/reunion.

Tbh I liked the way the movie portrayed their romance, it was like the only moment you had some colors on screen/different cinematography as well a sweet background score, like totally changing the movie’s atmosphere yet without making it cheesy.

But yeah someone like Saba Qamar would have easily pulled it better (and she’s a native Punjabi speaker as well so to speak, even if I feel people are being too harsh with Mahira).

Yeah I see your point, if we’re giving the casting the benefit of the doubt, they were looking at on screen chemistry which these 2 seem to have had in the past.

Still though, it makes us look like we are short on actresses or something.

Like you, Saba Qamar is who I had in mind for this role as well.

Pretty great opening weekend for a Pakistani movie. In fact, it's the highest worldwide opening weekend for a Pakistani movie ever. Hope it can get to over 150 Cr by the end of its box office run. This movie can easily get to that mark if it releases in the remaining Pakistani cinemas that still haven't shown this movie.

Learned another thing today : the narration was done by director Bilal Lashari's father, Kamran Lashari (who also had a role in the overrated Waar.)

It was so fitting that I thought it was a "professional", some voice artist or something (considering not only the big voice but also the tempo of the narration), but that's literally his father, that's so random but it's interesting how when a movie is that good it looks like just everything just fits in.

It's worth pointing out that the sword/gandassa combat was a staple of the original, as was the over the top blood and gore. That was back in the 1970's it's not like the Pakistani movie industry looked at GoT and thought, wow we got to get a piece of that.

That said, this does look like it's took some inspiration from Gladiator and wangled in some colosseum action.

Yeah I know. Either way, a massive upgrade on the original.

In Dallas areas the shows got multiplied today and they added the poster too now while booking online(AMC), word of mouth seems to be good , having said that have to say criminally under marketed in the North American region could had been a bigger weekend opening.

I was glossing over youtube promotions and man Fawad and Hamza are in the same damn clothes in two shows which makes me think they just marketed in couple of cities.

watched this tonight, thoroughly entertaining, only complaint would be that for non punjabis the subtitles are a very bland translation of the actual dialogue.

The producer of the original "Maula Jatt" seems to be belittling TLOFM without even having seen it. He insists that Fawad and Hamza are not a patch on Sultan and Mustafa. According to him the dialect of the film is also not correct. This man has been running his mouth since the film was announced as if someone is trying to remake "Sholay". He should shut his mouth now and sit down.

Apparently, they'll announce a release date for China soon (dubbing process as of now), and also the (too) many cinemas which didn't show it in Pakistan because of distributions shares controversies might show it as well soon.

If it ever gets a release in India (unlikely anytime soon) it'll not be only a hit in Indian Punjab but many other states in the north as well as Delhi because outside the specific Punjabi stuff the culture/ethos is pretty similar (references to Jat with local themes like revenge and honor, outside the quality itself).

The original "Maula Jatt" will be re-released in a few weeks time. The producer of that one wants people to watch the original then compare it to TLOMJ. According to him Noorie Nath's character was poorly treated in TLOMJ by being killed off and Maula Jatt being shown as an alcoholic has upset him too:ht

Good to see that more screens are being added. All the cinemas in Pakistan playing this movie would be the cherry on top but I guess that's asking for too much considering how selfish most businessmen are in Pakistan.

Hope this movie can crack the $10 million mark.

Anyone seen it? I haven't seen a PK film since the 80s, after being forced to sit through Nadeem-Shabnam films. They were torture

An overwhelming majority of people seem to enjoy this movie. I personally think it's a great movie. Definitely worth a watch.

Knowing a little Punjabi makes it more enjoyable.

I agree. I can't get myself to watch old Pakistani movies due to their bad production values.

This new one has great production values, VFX, action, etc, which is why I recommend it. It's on a whole different level compared to other Pakistani movies.

This should inshallah be a game changing movie for pakistan and encourage other directors and producers to think big

The scale, time, money and thought gone into this movie has been immense

Hats off to bilal and co cos theyve ended up producing a epic gem of a film in the end

Watched it yesterday. Simply amazing. The best movie Pakistan has ever made for sure. All the main characters were silly superb and the plot, direction, cinematography etc. were exceptional.

I ended up watching the original one as well and I can’t believe some people think it was better. That move is proper **. It almost felt like watching a comedy skit.

You can watch the scene of Maula fighting Natt on YouTube to witness the corny acting and dialogue.

Kannada films(never in my life I imagined this day lol) are outperforming Bollywood right now lol.
Kantara a movie has left right smacked bollywood into oblivion,it got 1 million in US boxoffice, every random Hindi speaking Indian person I meet is like we are boycotting bollywood.

I just saw the old one 2 days ago. Loved the delivery of dialogue . But the editing is juvenile. Terrible.

What's with Indians and their obsession with boycotts? Can't stand a difference of opinion?

One has to consider the timeline it was made. Just calling it a joke when punjabi cinema back then used to make only similar sort of dialogue delivery and editing should be understandable. I think all Sultan Rahi movies were the same

They can, hence the boycott.. It's literally called cancel culture happening across the world nothing to do with Indians as specific here but among Indian cinema only Bollywood bears the brunt because they are the obnoxious of the lot.

Pakistanis would watch any random bollywood film because of the brand of the actors.

If this is diminishing in India its only a good sign for the Lollywood movie industry - as Pakistanis are unlikely to watch Indian regional cinema. There is a market for punjabi films esp when it has Pakistan actors in it like the recent one with Sohail Ahmed.

Yeah while that is true but I know many young Pakistanis, Bangladeshis many of them who actually started watching South Indian dubbed as well(check social media or even this forum), it's mostly due to lack of Pakistani/Bangladeshi options should yes definitely good for everyone except obviously Bollywood lol.

I know many in my circle who have stopped watching bollywood long back. Random hits is exception but that addiction
from 90s or 2000s has definitely disappeared among the circle I know. Other regional movies from there aren't followed. I gave RRR a try on Netflix and couldn't cope with the bonginess and usual silly action in their cinema so switched to another movie half way. If they let go of cringeness factor and silly over the top action and make meaningful movies, they would do well but their followers won't accept it and subpar movies sell big in India, and same nonsense has been seen in Pakistani movies which I have hated and haven't watched.

Maula Jatt sure seems like a blessing and hopefully Pak cinema will follow this trend!

It was good for its time but you cannot take it seriously by modern standards. People need to overcome nostalgia.
You don't disown your forebearers for being cringe. You appreciate it so you can grow from it. Old movie was the Pakistani cinema. Just as Sholey was bolly or Godfather was Hollywood.

Mahira is the Shoaib Malik of the Pakistani Film Industry

Absolutely in love with that movie!

So well done. Can't wait for the sequel :)

People clapped at the end.

Going to watch it again for the second time on Sunday

Cant wait!

Malik at least performs , Mahira couldn’t hold a candle to Humaima in the movie.

It was like Malik vs Wasim

The Natts definitely outperformed the Jatts

The roles of makha, noorie and daro were played superbly

Absolutely, I don’t want to put spoilers here but the way Natt siblings were handled was remarkable, I just kept waiting for their scenes and in their own way progressive.
shaz619 I do recommend this one esp if you understand even a but of Punjabi.

Did you watch the movie? If you did how would you rate it?

It has a pretty simple plot. Bilal presented the story in a way that everyone could easily understand it. That's great for a majority of Pakistanis because they don't normally watch movies, especially Pakistani movies.

Ofcourse I watched it, I'm recommending to everyone here, In my opinion it's not really a simple plot there are various layers to it but he did present it in a way that everyone could understand.

It's easily the best Pakistani movie I have seen ( since 2000's and I have seen more than many Pakistani posters here including WAAR lol).

The movie is what will bring people to theaters, it had the relativity feel and all the entertainment factors required for a movie but for me as I said above Natt's stole the show, absolutely remarkable, credit to the director completely, even the cinematography the perfect use of dark angles so as the sets don't appear silly was outstanding, I saw it in Dolby Atmos as well which as I mentioned before was done by an Indian guy so I knew the effects were to be immersive and was rightly so.

My only complains with the movie was Mahira and at some moments Fawad's Punjabi. My partner who never has seen a Pakistani movie also loved it , it's a treat esp for Punjabi speakers.

What also surprises me is that this was ready in 2019 even 3 years later it looked absolutely great, I'm glad it isn't direct Netflix release.

Glad you enjoyed it. This is the first Pakistani movie that you can actually call a proper movie since 2012.

The story is somewhat complex with the tribal politics adding a whole different dimension to it but they didn't really dive into it too much. They made it quite clear that this movie is about Maula vs Noorie and not Jatts vs Natts. Revenge-based stories are fairly simple but that doesn't make them any less entertaining if done properly.

Hopefully, this movie inspires producers and directors in Pakistan to be more ambitious with their movies.

You must have been watching it in the same theatre as me, there was people clapping at the end of it in the Emporium Lahore too. Seats were being sold out for the next showing within 30 mins of the previous one. Spectacular film, although Noori stole the show somewhat from Maula himself.

Having watched the film now, I see where you are coming from, but not sure whether it was down to the casting of Mahira or just her role in the film itself which seemed to be a Maula groupie somewhat.

In contrast, the better role seems to have gone to Noori's bloodthirsty sister (don't know her real name) but she brought some real fire.

Have to say that you clearly dislike bollywood more than you like Lollywood.. Humaima his her name.

Not sure how you came to that conclusion based on that quote. I don't like either, Bollywood because it is fake and cringeworthy to embarrassing levels, and Pakistani cinema because it usually looks like it's been produced by a 10 year old with a £150 budget.

Incidentally, I'm wondering, given the success of this film internationally, how are Indians watching it at home? I'm assuming it will be banned in your country due to your govt's long term policy of maintaining hostile relations with Pakistan.

too watch this, does one need to watch the original first or after?

Watched it last night , very disappointing . The original Maula Jatt was famous for its Punjabi dialogues, but in this movie , three main characters played by Fawad, Mahira and one who played Nori's brother could not speak proper Punjabi. Their accent and delivery was ridiculous . Fawad is more suited to pay in some slow romantic urdu drama, not as a rugged "gabroo Jawan" to play Muala Jatt.

Noori Natt's role played by Hamza Abbassi was great, wonderful.

My bad, I got thrown by your flag and venue city of Chennai.

Anyway, I would imagine there would be a fair interest in the film in India, how do you think people would get access to it there? Watch via illegal streaming services with VPNs?

Probably with subtitles judging by the question. Since you are a Pakistan citizen I can only imagine this film must seem foreign to you.

I wouldn't bother with the first one. I've never seen it, but of the few Punjabi movies I've watched from Pakistan, the only ones which were any good were the send ups which were absolutely hilarious.

thats what I wanted to know. The original one is known for its Punjabi dialogues and and swear words. Wondered if this one has that flare.

Seen some snippets of the older but never watched it.

Cant decide whether to watch the old one first or not

The old one has the worst editing of any movie I have ever seen. Terrible terrible editing. I bet if you have a pro the whole film and told him to re-edit it and make a movie out of it would be decent. The acting is fine , over the top punjabi style. Dialogue deliver is great. Just the editing is terrible for the old one.

Those saying the Punjabi spoken n TLOMJ was poor should know that Mustafa Qureshi who played Noori Nath in the original "Maula Jatt" is Sindhi not Punjabi. People always say the original was better for it being the first one but in my opinion the original "Maula Jatt" didn't do much for me. Come on lets get real what lady could ever fancy Sultan Rahi for heaven sake!!:farhat

TLOMJ being Pak's biggest earner suggests most Pak people loved it. By our past standards it is a massive improvement for sure.

My bad, I got thrown by your flag and venue city of Chennai.

Anyway, I would imagine there would be a fair interest in the film in India, how do you think people would get access to it there? Watch via illegal streaming services with VPNs?

Yeah the interest would be mostly in the Punjabi belt.. I’m guessing it would be or when it releases on Netflix..

Sultan Rahi was a man's man. Men wanted to be him and ladies wanted him.
