‘With my kids…’ – Virat Kohli involved in heated confrontation at Australian airport

Indian cricket superstar Virat Kohli lashed out at reporters who he believed filmed his children at an Australian airport.

Kohli, who flew separately to his teammates, touched down in Melbourne from Brisbane ahead of the Boxing Day Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

The 36-year-old had arrived in Melbourne with his family, including his two small children.

But Kohli's temper soon flared when he perceived the local media had filmed the superstar with his kids.

In the footage, captured by 7 News, Kohli initially walked away but returned to issue his passionate plea to the media.

"It was upon seeing the waiting cameras that Kohli became a little heated over what is largely a misunderstanding when he thought the media was filming him with his children," Channel 7 reporter Theo Doropoulos said.

"The usually cool Kohli seemed anything but, making his position very clear."

Kohli said to the many cameras filming him: "With my kids, I need some privacy, yeah? You can't film without asking me."

Doropoulos added Kohli eventually cleared the air with the media 'once it was explained his kids weren't in fact being filmed', with the Indian cricketer even shaking a cameraman's hand."

Kohli's lash-out at the media perhaps speaks to the simmering tension between India and Australia in the latest series of the Border-Gavaskar trophy.

The series is level at 1-1 after the third Test at the Gabba was derailed by wet weather.

It was especially tough luck on the Aussies, who scored 445 in the first innings thanks to centuries from Steve Smith and Travis Head.

India could only muster 260 in response, as the Aussies declared at 7/89 in the second innings knowing time was running out to get a result due to the poor weather.

Sadly for the host nation, they could not get a result in time.

It leaves the series evenly poised going into the fourth Test at the MCG.

India got the series off to a dream start in Perth when they beat Australia by 295 runs thanks to the bowling brilliance of Jasprit Bumrah, who snared eight wickets for just 72 runs across two innings.

Kohli also earned himself a slice of history in Perth as his ton broke Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most Test centuries by an Indian player on Australian soil, which now stands at seven.

Australia hit immediately back in the second Test when they demolished India by 10 wickets thanks to Head's scintillating knock of 140 in the first innings.

India have held the Border-Gavaksar trophy since 2015 and if they are to retain it, they will need Kohli to produce similar performances to what he displayed in Perth.

Outside of his century in the first Test, Kohli has recorded scores of three, seven, 11 and three again.

So they were not there for him loool
Kohli should know the way this series has been and the way he has been playing from last 5 6 months media is not interested in him.
But yes talking about privacy about his children, he completely deserves them to keep them safe from these media houses.

Wrong. Kohli is already Global face of cricket so its doesn't matter much if he is performing or not now ..

ICC press release about ICC champion trophy include virat Kohli picture even he is not a captain of india or host country player.

That the status of Virat Kohli. He has already sealed his legacy.

Such a shameful reporter.

Knowing virat not traveling with team to keep his family privacy, still reporters are there to record him with his family.

There is a reason he doesn't want to disclose his child face.

how difficult is it for the media to not click pictures of his kids after repetitive requests?

Isn't there any respect of someone's privacy?

Hey bro.
I completely understand your point, and you're absolutely right—Virat's popularity and achievements are undeniable. My comment was just in jest, with no intention to disrespect or offend. He truly is an icon, and I have a lot of respect for what he has done for cricket. Hope we’re good!

So embarrassing for Kohli in multiple ways.
What is embarrassing about this? Kohli and his wife’s strict no media policy regarding their kids is very well known. He was just trying to protect his kids & when he found out they weren’t filming his kids, he apologized.

Kohli travels in a pvt jet. Has been doing so for few years now.

Apparently Same is the case with Bumrah these days.

The problem with Kohli is that he thinks he is the only celebrity in the world who has kids, or somehow his kids are a special breed compared to other humans.

I think we all remember what happened in South Africa few years back. His dumbo wife was facing the crowd with their daughter and then both complained when someone took their picture.

What a low IQ person to whine about it when walking in broad daylight in an age of cellphone cameras.

This is a given when you're a celebrity. When you enjoy the pros of doing your milestones celebration in front of cameras so the world can see. Also understand that people would be following your with cameras everywhere. That's the cons of being a celebrity

It is very much the point. Send the prima donna and the offspring to Bandra where this won't happen. At this rate, papa isn't too far away either.

Again. None of that takes away the rights of minor to have privacy.

Virat didn't object to him being filmed.

Are the minors celebrity? Or their rights are forfeit?

Then don’t take them out in public.

The law in Australia is in public , anything & anyone can be photographed, filmed or recorded

respect the laws of the land you visit.

Kohli is playing poorly , really should be focused on scoring a run or two

Australia doesn't have laws to protect minors?

Kohli can score a duck, does it forfeit the rights of his minor children?

Are the minors celebrity? Or their rights are forfeit?
Kohli is. Where ever he goes. The media will follow.

I'm just stating pros and cons. How things are in this world. My stance on this as a matter of right and wrong, is privacy for even celebrities let alone their family.

He has every right to protect his children’s privacy. He is a parent before he is a cricketer.

That said when he found out they weren’t filming, he did move on.

Teacup and storm.

lol calling for attention, typical indians.

Australian media doesnt care about cricket. Its only Indians that go crazy... But oh well, Indians and delusion of thinking the world revolves around them........

People are protective of their children. Even animals are.

There is no expectation of privacy in a public place, at least in civilized countries. Anyone can be recorded, and is recorded by several cameras, including CCTV. People with cameras in their hands are no exception.

Don't try to spin this argument, unless the law says "minors can't be on camera even in public", then you will have to destroy each and every CCTV.

CCtv cameras and journalists taking photos are two different things.

In civilized countries, press doesn't drag minors into their coverage unless the minors are involved.

Never understood this chichorpan of Virat and Anushka. You're kids aren't special sure their parents celebrities but in the western world when you're out in public, there is no expectation of privacy. If photographing in was a crime all these media outlets and paparazzi's taking photos of Hollywood celebrities with their minor kids out in public would be charged and thrown in jail.

You want privacy then keep them in a private setting and cover their faces when out in public.

Public filming is allowed of anyone . You & Kohli should do your homework on laws outside of India .

His kids appearance is known , what protection are you seeking ?

Minors are protected from Press in most civilized countries because they are minors.

People can't click photos others children no Matter where.

If Parents are not allowing Minors have the right to be away from press photos.

There is something called right to privacy.

Just because you are in a public place doesn't mean anyone can film your children with the intention to use it in media.

so India is civilised & Australia isn’t ? lol

What you wish is not what the law is .

There’s no issue of danger to his kids .

Or maybe organise a hybrid model & play them only in Philippines

Once you step outside, you have waived the rights to any privacy, including minors. You can request for the minor not to be filmed but you cannot demand "right to privacy" in public.

Besides we live in age you're being recorded the moment you leave your home. You can be on street cams, dash cams and other CCTV cameras. Anyone can access this and upload to social media without consent.

You want privacy? You create it. You can make the minor put on a hat or a face mask.

You're just posting random statements and your opinions. Which are not the law.

What's the law in civilized countries? There is no expectation of privacy in public places and one can be filmed.

If you think there is a law that says minors are excluded from it, post the exact link, specially AUS law in this case.

There is no such law which can prevent you from photographing minor out in public. If there was one then all these media outlets and paparazzi's would be facing a lawsuit by these uber rich celebrities for photographing their kids out in public and sharing it to the world. 😂

Father's are naturally protective of their kids. Sometimes they get it wrong but the the protective instincts just take over.

Can't fault him too up. It sounds like he apologised.

Minors cannot waive their rights and the obligation lies on the press to accord privacy to minors.

You can get any photo or video that shows a minors face removed from most social media sites.

I feel sad for children of some of the people here. The lack of parenting instinct is.... Well, it's the children who will suffer while the father is out there gloating about himself.

Kohli travels in a pvt jet. Has been doing so for few years now.

He should be travelling with the team and not private jet. Performance zero...privileges unlimited. Even captain Sharma travel in team bus but king kohli needs everything private.

Minors or not, there is no consent needed when in public. If it did then you wouldn't have paparazzi's taking family photos of celebrities in public and have them taken down.

Media should respect privacies of players.

Having said that, Kohli has had outbursts with many different people. He needs to conduct himself in a dignifying manner.

You keep dodging the question. First you claimed minors who are in public cannot be photographed or filmed.

Now you cannot come up with a law that states this and keep deflecting.

As we said earlier, no such law exists and in public spaces there is no expectation of privacy.

What social media sites do is as per their own ToS and is NOT the law nor it applies to whether one can film someone in public or not .

All such demanding parents can do is either REQUEST or put a mask on.

Still remember how MJ's children all used to wear masks when they were kids while going out in the public. Maybe Kohli can try that with his kids. But then again, he ain't a wacko.

The only solution, if someone is this obsessed, is to put on masks.

They cannot demand or threaten others not to film in a public space. This varies by country to country but in most civilized countries there is no expectation of privacy in public spaces.

So Kohli doesn't live in India, doesn't play first class in India and doesn't even travel on the team bus with the Indian players during a tour but he plays for India..

Wow......

This NRIs getting royal treatment here which all of us mortal NRIs would not get...

Does Kohli even get taxed in India considering his income is from India ?.

I can't believe I am watching such privileged kids now, still remember how humble and down to earth SRT was during his playing days and he is the second greatest bat of all time unlike our NRI here who happen to just suck at batting.

I think if Kohli’s attitude was more “requestful” than confrontational, this would be a non incident. Pretty sure they would have explained to him right there that they were not filming his kids.

Forget media, it could have been a member of the public who could have taken his and his kids’ pictures. Many times he wouldn’t even know.

But I can understand he didn’t want his kids to be filmed, it doesn’t concern me what reason he may have, but a little politeness wouldn’t have hurt. Good thing he apologized.

What a weird headline.

So by media own admission he calmly made his point known and shook hands once it was explained that his kids weren’t being filmed, but he lost his cool?

It's poor click bait headlines and many posters got drawn. It's media being media for eyeballs. Hating Kohli is so 2018, but it still makes money.

People are protective of their children. Even animals are.

If Kohli is so protective of his kids then maybe he shouldn’t be travelling with them when he’s away on a tour.

The wife and kids should be home, or travel separately if they’re so concerned about the privacy of their kids.

Unless he stays 180 days outside India he gets taxed in India.

But he will shift to London permanently in a few months.

Read the UNICEF guidelines on media reporting on children.

Some people think they are more important than they actually are.

Why is Bumrah also doing that?

What do u guys know about private jets n having private security? Cuz i know i travel in one n security. Ill never let anyone take a pic of us

Appears that buying a private jet for the top tier rich Indian cricketers is akin to us laymen buying a $20,000 car.

Well said. Some of the things you read nowadays about what sick people are able to do with technology and how they target kids is enough for anyone parental instinct to kick in.

Kohli is getting hate for just being a normal dad.

Kohli is bigger than Cricket Australia, he generates more revenue than ECB+ ACB combined, Australians will get millions by releasing baby pictures.

I’ve seen this video circulating on social media…

Yes, Kohli is not a star anymore. Rather a burden to Indian team. Media shouldn't have any interest in him .

These are golden days hes enjoying right now and media attention due to the "Brand" that he is. However, all this popularity fades with time as celebrities retire from their professions. (Ex: Dhoni,Sachin, etc). They might have formed side businesses to secure future financially but the limelight moves to new faces/stars.

I've always found him kinda unpleasant tbh .. it's just that you don't think about that facet of him when he's scoring a ton of runs for the national team. And now even the runs have dried up..

Nothing is going right for him right now. Neutral Indian public is already after him and now his coach has told media that he will shift to London. Public are burying him on Social media, by this i think he might plan to retire from all formats pretty sooner than we expected. Otherwise I don't think he will retire because of the fame he has sponsorship money that he gets and bcci also will force him to play 27 world cup before hanging his boots.
It's basically Virat vs public.

No in a fun way we can say that but in reality that's not the case. Cricket, Bcci and icc 30% runs on Kohli's fame as well, even if he fails 200 times there will be still his photos on stadiums and during world tournaments and people will come to watch one of the greatest. Media also earns from these hype thing and all and they know India is crazy for him, so any news regarding him will spread like a fire.
As @Devadwal said he is absolutely spot on but yes what we can say is he is ruining his legacy in these last years. Imagining him retiring with 45-47 average my God that will be disaster for sure.
