[VIDEOS] Aamer Jamal - International performance thread

He was impressive today.

I thought Moeen would take him to the cleaners. But, he kept his cool.

Disagree when you say that Babar wasn’t being smart here. I would have said the same thing even if we lost. Babar had one of two options - bowl all his main bowlers at crucial times in the hope that they can get the wickets and dry up the runs, leaving enough for the debutant to defend in the last over, or bring on his debutant at the crucial moment potentially risking a Husnain-type moment, where the debutant gives away 20-25 runs and then your main bowlers have no chance to defend what’s left.

Babar made the smart choice by keeping his match-winning bowlers on at those key moments. Had he not done so, this match may have been over well before the 20th over, with a substantial loss.

I agree. Babar's captaincy in the last night's match was top notch. Be it starting with nawaz and getting wicket in the first over, completing iftikhar's quota or using jamal in death. Glad that our Captain is learning.

Great last over, I watched it with great interest. Persisted in that wide yorker, showed maturity and control not common in a debutant. Loved how his teammates were supporting him, and appreciate Babar for showing the confidence in him for that match-deciding last over. Now play him, and Wasim Jr., up the order, in the rest of the games to see what they're made of, and also play the young spinner in the last two games. Rest Rizwan and Rauf, for god's sakes, and play Haris the wicketkeeper. So much for the idea of you have to go through the PSL first. I trust the chief selector more.

It was good to hear after the match that captain & everyone made the plan to persist with wide yorkers throughout the over no matter what even if it meant some wides or if he got hit for a six. Due to the wet ball, he missed on one of them which saw Moeen hit him for six but overall he was very spot on. 4 of those wide yorkers were superbly executed and I am glad to see the captain & everyone come up with a solid plan on how to do it.

Hard to believe at his age, he's only played a whopping 12 T20 matches. Surely likely to get a PSL contract now and once this series is over, he'll get be headed for the FC matches and that will be great for his development too to see if there's potential of more than simply a T20 allrounder.

Pakistan debutant Aamir Jamal displayed experience beyond his years by producing a brilliant final over to help his side clinch a narrow six-run T20I victory over England in Karachi on Wednesday.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam entrusted Jamal to bowl the final over of the match in what was his first international appearance and the 26-year-old held his nerve to defend 15 runs against stand-in England captain Moeen Ali.

Jamal was pinpoint with his wide yorker as Moeen managed just eight runs from the debutant's final six deliveries as Pakistan moved ahead 3-2 in the seven-match series.

The hosts score of 145 was the lowest total ever defended by any side in a T20I in Pakistan and Jamal's performance at the death was a major reason behind the victory.

Moeen was full of praise for the bowling all-rounder who collected figures of 1/13 from two overs and believes he has a big future in the game.

"It was a very good last over and you can’t take anything away from him," Moeen said after the match.

"I was just hoping he missed the wide yorker ... like the one I got hold of (and hit for six on the third delivery of the final over).

"With the wet ball and the ball probably being out of shape and him on his debut and nervous ... he bowled really well and sometimes you have just got to give it to him."

The ultimate T20 World Cup form guide
The sixth and penultimate game of the series is once again in Lahore on Friday, before the final match at the same venue on Sunday.

Pakistan then travel to New Zealand for four warm-up matches and a further two games in Australia ahead of their ICC Men's T20 World Cup against arch-rival India at the MCG in Melbourne on October 23.

While I am thrilled for Aamer Jamal, its too early to say anything about him.

Next match, he can go for 0/50 and get out for a duck and everyone will start writing them off.

Many players have had good debuts and then faded away - particularly when opposition figures them out.

What we do owe him is a stretch of games somewhere in the next year or thereabouts, in order to see where he is at international stage.

The last is full of confidence.

I understand what you are saying, but his biggest asset for me is his temperament. He seems very focused and confident. I don't see him as an outstanding bowler or batsman, but someone who can do both to a decent level, and probably perform at a much higher level in pressure games than many players with more apparent talent.

He has been playing in the South Yorkshire premier League for a local club called Whiston Parish. Seen him play on a number of occasions. decent pace and can hit a ball!

I want to see AJ bat at 3 or 4 instead of Shan or Haider

This boy will take his opportunity

I nearly had a heart attack when Jamal was given the final over but what confidence bowling with a wet bowl in your 1st T20i in front of a full lahore crowd without any PSL experience.

Hats off the lad inshaallah just keep improving son you have a heart of a lion.

According to some posters if you just do 5% of the work, you have won the match for the team. So according to them, Aamir has won the match for Pakistan. All the other bowlers did nothing, The fact that there were 15 runs needed on last over was all due to Aamir Jamal !

But on a serious note, he looked okay, but still really raw to have good opinion on him. I mean his t20 stats don’t show much, cause of lacking game time. Having said that, lets give this guy some opportunity and not waste him like we have done with Anwar ali. We are in need of a fast bowling all rounder and he is maybe and hopefully the answer!

I suspect Babar may turn to Jamal to bowl death overs more often but one should temper expectations as its one of the hardest skills to do - even Shaheen has been smashed around in the death overs.

Hasnain could learn a thing or two about nerves and sticking to the plan from this kid.

His added flexibility and extra balance in the side great inclusion

No doubt what you say is true. There is a long way to go but let's hope he makes the 8 spot his own

Good start but too early to judge his performances.Knowing pakistan cricket If he performs well in remaining 2 matches he might have outside chance to replace usman qadir in worldcup squad

It is too early to say if he will succeed at international level. If he performs with bat and ball then that will be great.Pakistan needs a good fast/medium allrounder.

He's over 30 years old. Most of the team are in their 30s. We need to find young players so they can play a decade like Shadab, Naseem.

Am still not sure if he's international material however he bowled a brilliant last over and he deserves all the praise he gets for that over.

Prove it that he ain't.

Just look at his face, he is over 30. Point being why are we investing in players at 30 when they would only have a few years left and why are we not age testing everyone coming into the system?

Age test the entire squad.

About the last over:

“He (Babar) told me that we’ll only go with one plan, and you’ll decide that"

"I told him, ‘wide yorker’ to which he asked me if I’d be able to pull it off and I responded by saying, ‘Definitely’. He further told me even if it’s a wide, stick to the plan. And I stuck to it.”

“The pressure was on the first ball. Once the first ball was delivered, there was no pressure. The wide (on the third delivery) was because of the dew that had made it difficult to grip the ball. The six (on the next delivery) was also definitely because of the ball slipping out of my hands, I couldn’t grip it. Despite that Bobby bhaiya (Babar) came to me and said, ‘No worries, you’ll do it (finish the match). Only you can. You’ve bowled the last two-three deliveries, so you’ll bowl the next ones as well’. That gave me confidence and I saw the over through.”

“When I was watching the second last over, in which Haris (Rauf) was also hit for a six and another boundary came off it, I was planning on what I needed to do to ensure my team’s win. First, I kept my nerves under control, because at this stage (in the match) when Haris, who’s experienced than me, got hit for a boundary then I realised I needed to do it. I definitely stepped up and told me myself whatever happens I’ll give my heart out and executed the plan.”

He looks more like 36 than 26 bro.

Apparently he played for Pakistan U19.

Don’t know the exact details of how ICC measure the age but heard it’s good enough so there’s just a potential error margin of 1-2 years only, which of course at U19 can make all the difference (see the Indian opening batsman Manjot Kalra who basically guided India to victory during the 2018 U19 WC) but point is even if Aamer Jamal did underplay his real age there’s no way there’s a full decade gap.

More anecdotally, if he was 36 he wouldn’t have that pace either.

If he is good hitter, Lets try him as opener, Maybe he can have same impact like Green had for Aussies.

My point is, temperament will count for nothing if his 4 overs go for 1/47 and he scores not much.

Hope he has the skills to go with the temperament as opposing teams suss out newbies quite fast.

Hope he doesnt lose heart today!

Aamer Jamal to Philip Salt, FOUR, 18 from the over,

Do other teams age test ?

They record the age accurately at birth. India, Afghanistan and West Indies do not.

So PCB should take matters into their own hands and test themselves.

They should do it at under younger age groups such as u19s or even before that.

Making his Test debut in the 1st Test against Australia

What a shame that he is our third seamer with a first class average of 32.

Still best of luck to him.

Nervy start for him. 1st over and bowled some extras, not a confidence builder TBH. Hope he gets into his grove soon.

its not good enough. The margin of error is upto 5 years per player.

Absolutely criminal to drop catches at this level.

For me, he should not have been playing. Wasim or Hassan were better choices instead of putting Aamer jamal (on debut) in front of Australians.

It’s brutal to send any debutant in front of the Aussies on their home turf, let alone one as poor as he is.

Terrible start for Shan and the management.

Finally, he got the wicket after his catch was dropped earlier by Abdullah. He got Travis head who was in some form since last year.

After Day 1 of the First Test between Australia and Pakistan, in the press conference, Aamer Jamal said:

"In my first spell, I couldn't find my rhythm. In my second spell, I felt better. Later, I spoke to the captain and wanted another spell. We planned for both of them (Warner & Head) with short balls, and that helped us succeed. Head was playing the cut shot well so it was our plan to have the (catching) fielder outside the circle. He was playing the shot even if it wasn't that short, so that's how we got him out."

"I loved the experience of playing here. I've been to Australia in 2017 where I played in Sydney. Playing in Australia against Australia is always challenging but I think we were good enough. Both bowlers are bowling well with the 2nd new ball. We're planning to get them out in the first hour tomorrow morning. Both batsmen are playing their shots so if they're doing that, we might get them early on."

Yes, it was a good plan, but he still didn't bowl up to our expectations. He is the most expensive bowler of Day 1, with an economy rate of 5.25.

There’s nothing there to suggest he’ll be a regular in this test side right now.

Maybe in a few years if he uses this experience positively and has to probably break into the white ball side first.

After the first day of the 1st Test between Australia and Pakistan, Aamir Jamal spoke to the PCB media team. He said:

"Alhamdulillah, I was satisfied. I enjoyed the initial phase of bowling, but the rhythm wasn't quite there at the start. However, in the second spells, the rhythm improved, leading to success."

"In terms of wickets, we conceded more runs than desired. However, we managed to recover well, especially after the strong start by David Warner. There was a challenging session where we dismissed two of their batsmen, and then three more. We were able to cover that up."

"It's definitely challenging; being in this prime cricket stage worldwide. However, if you've put in hard work and done your homework, it doesn't become as difficult. People tend to follow the same routine, but starting strong from the beginning is crucial. The competition becomes intense, and the standards rise. If you stick to the basics, you find success."

"InshaAllah, we'll give our best effort. Considering the recent overs bowled, Shaheen and Khurram have performed well. They are batters who won't waste time; they'll try for boundaries every second or third ball. Our aim is to get them out in the first over."

"It felt great, I spoke to Khurram, and he spoke to me. I provided him with confidence, and he reciprocated. We keep discussing these things with each other. We don't think about making our Test debut,we focus on the process we've been through. If we stay focused on that process, we'll do well."

"Teammates are fantastic. We have a family-oriented environment from the start. Even if there's a bad bowl, there's always support. So, it's a good atmosphere, a family-like environment where we feel confident and relaxed."

Not very impressed with his bowling today because he is the most expensive bowler, with an economy rate of 5.25. Wish him good luck for day 2, and I hope he will find a better rhythm.

Aamer Jamal is making his debut memorable in the first innings. He got his 3rd wicket as the day 2 starts. That was a peach of a delivery to remove Alex Carey as the partnership was building strong. Wonderful bowling from the debutant.

Yep. He looked the best bowler because of his pace and seam position. He is getting some in-dipper going on which is working perfectly for him. Nobody expected him to do well but I guess hard work pays off

I think the pace is helping him big time here. He is getting some zip out of wicket and he might also do well in the batting department as well. Let's see

Aamer Jamal picked up his 4th wicket of the innings by removing Starc. The umpire call saved Starc on the ball before he got cleaned up by Jamal on the very next ball.

He has been bowled nicely but has been bowling many extras which he needs to work on.

Aamer Jamal has a good strong shoulder because his action involves a lot of power generated from it. It allows him to bowl bouncers as well. Can be improved though.

Simply brilliant on debut. 5fer against Australia in Perth on debut is no easy feat.

He gives you a workhorse type of glace. But like Wagner.

Excellent start to his career, 6 on debut, had Pak caught Warner at 100, we would restricted them to around/under 400.

Great start to his Test career. Well deserved!

If he can contribute with the bat also in this match. That'll be cherry on top

Celebrating like that when the opposition have scored damn near 500 is stupid. Just goes to show the selfish, self-centred nature of Pakistani cricketers.

Majority of the Pak fan base was calling him an awful selection yesterday. Today they will call him a great all rounder.

Next game he will fail to pick up a 6 fer , hence overrated and finally 2 tests later he will be dropped.

He needs to be persisted with, batting is very average , on Hasan Ali's level. Should not be made to bowl like a workhorse , treat him like you would Haris Rauf use him as an enforcer. That's how you develop players.
