Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday left for China on a four-day official visit through which Dr Yunus thinks the relationship between Bangladesh and China would further be deepened.

A special China Southern flight carrying the chief adviser and his entourage left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 1pm.

Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain, Power, Energy and Mineral Resources; Road Transport and Bridges; and Railways Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, High Representative to Chief Adviser Khalilur Rahman, Principal Coordinator on SDGs Affairs and Senior Secretary Lamiya Morshed and CA's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam are accompanying the chief adviser.

Bangladesh Ambassador to China Md Nazmul Islam and Vice Governor of Hainan Province will receive the Chief Adviser upon his arrival at Qionghai Bo'ao International Airport at around 7pm, a senior official told UNB.

"I will meet with President Xi Jinping. I will also meet with CEOs of major Chinese businesses," Dr Yunus said ahead of the visit.

The bilateral meeting will be held at the Great Hall of China on March 28.

Addressing the nation on Tuesday evening, Dr Yunus said the world's largest Chinese solar panel manufacturer Longji has expressed interest in setting up a factory in Bangladesh.

"We are working with them. In addition, technical assistance, medical assistance, low-cost treatment and other issues will be discussed," he said, adding that they (China) want to import mangoes, jackfruit and guava from Bangladesh. "This will start very soon."

Bangladesh and China are set to sign several agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) as Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and Chinese President Xi Jinping prepare to hold a bilateral meeting in Beijing on March 28.

The bilateral cooperation documents are likely to be signed in the areas of human resource development, economic and technical assistance, cultural and sports cooperation and cooperation between the media.

Besides, announcements related to economy, investment and economic zones are likely to be made, said Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin.

The two leaders will discuss various strategic bilateral issues between Bangladesh and China, trade and investment promotion, cooperation in agriculture, infrastructure, renewable energy sectors, and resolving the Rohingya issue, among other matters of mutual interest between the two countries, said the Foreign Secretary.

The foreign secretary said China is Bangladesh's best friend, closest neighbour, strategic partner and one of the largest commercial and development partners.

Bangladesh and China enjoy excellent diplomatic relations, which are deepening, he said, adding that this year the two countries have undertaken programs to celebrate the 50 years of China-Bangladesh diplomatic relations.

The chief adviser will attend roundtable discussions on Sustainable Infrastructure and Energy Investment; Bangladesh 2.0 Manufacturing and Market Opportunities; Social Business, Youth Entrepreneurship and the World of Three Zeros.

Dr Yunus' scheduled visit to China from March 26-29 is going to be the “most important visit” by a Bangladesh leader over the last 50 years, as the two countries are eyeing to take the relations to a new height.

"We want to create a revolution in the manufacturing sector," said the press secretary, adding that it helps create more jobs and boost exports from Bangladesh to the global market.

He said there will be a series of engagements during the chief adviser's China visit.

On the sidelines of the forum, Alam said, the chief adviser is likely to have meetings with CEOs of some companies.

Dhaka and Beijing are eyeing stronger ties, marking the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh-China diplomatic relations.

The chief adviser will attend a programme on March 29 at Peking University and will return to Dhaka at night (same day).

As per the plans, the chief adviser will first attend the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference 2025 in Boao, South China's Hainan Province.

On March 27, Dr Yunus will participate in the inaugural plenary session of the BFA and Executive Vice President of the State Council will meet the Chief Adviser the same day.

On August 25 last year, Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen conveyed the Chinese leadership's invitation to Dr Yunus to visit China at his convenience.

“China and Bangladesh are best friends and trustworthy partners. So, whatever change is taking place internationally or domestically in Bangladesh, our policy remains steadfast,” Ambassador Yao said recently, adding that no matter who forms the government China wants to be their partner and their policy is not related to any particular government.

He said the theme is intended to reinvigorate multilateralism, promote openness and development, jointly respond to global challenges, and carry out the commitments of the UN Summit of the Future while focusing on the development of Asia.

Many heads of international and regional organisations, ministerial-level officials, entrepreneurs of Fortune Global 500, and renowned experts and scholars have already confirmed their participation in the annual conference, Zhang said.

He said the event will focus on four subject areas: building trust and promoting cooperation in a fast-changing world; rebalancing globalisation for inclusive development; accelerating the Sustainable Development Goals for more effective responses to global challenges; and strengthening AI application and governance for innovation-driven development.

Was speaking to a Bangladeshi colleague on a trip to the States last month.

I should say that he's no a supporter of Haseena. He thought of her as a dictator and said that she hadn't won a valid election in more than 10 years.

However, he was pretty worried about the future of Bangladesh and that it was quietly slipping into a military dictatorship backed by religious extremists. Yunus himself is a 85 year puppet. Elections are not on the distant horizon...the authorities keep making vague assertions of needing to reform a lot of things before they can allow an election. No indication of why a democratically elected leader cannot make these fixes. There's also a sharp turn towards China which only exacerbates the chances of a military dictatorship. Traditionally China couldn't care less about Democracy and might actually prefer dealing with an authoritarian government.

China for deeper cooperation with Bangladesh as Xi, Yunus meet in Beijing​

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday said China would give a positive consideration to a host of important issues raised by Bangladesh as he held bilateral talks with Bangladesh delegation led by Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus.

They included reduction of the interest rates on Chinese loans and cooperation on water resources management, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam told UNB, describing the talks between President Xi and Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus as a ‘hugely successful’ bilateral meeting.

Alam said the talks were ‘comprehensive, fruitful and constructive, marked by warmth’.

President Xi reiterated China’s support to the Chief Adviser and the interim government, said the Press Secretary.

‘It was Prof Yunus’s first bilateral foreign tour, and so far, it has been a “grand” success,’ Alam said.

President Xi said China would encourage Chinese investment to Bangladesh and relocation of Chinese manufacturing enterprises to Bangladesh.

President Xi spoke about his two tours to Bangladesh and said he studied microcredit when he was the governor of Fujian province, Alam said.

The Chinese President also said he tried Bangladeshi mangoes and jackfruit.

‘They are delicious. Bangladesh is expected to export the two fruits to China in a big way in the coming months,’ Alam quoted President Xi as saying.

Dr Yunus and Chinese President Xi held bilateral talks at People’s Great Hall and discussed bilateral, regional and global issues.

They discussed ways to further strengthen the relations between the two countries and take it to a new height protecting Dhaka-Beijing’s mutual and strategic interests.

Both sides discussed various strategic bilateral issues between Bangladesh and China, trade and investment growth, agriculture, infrastructure, support for renewable energy sectors, and resolving the Rohingya issue, as well as overall issues of mutual interest between the two countries, eyeing a new chapter in relations.

At the meeting, Dr Yunus sought China’s greater role in establishing peace, prosperity and stability for both nations.

During the meeting, Dr Yunus expressed heartfelt greetings to Chinese President Xi Jinping on behalf of Bangladesh and its people.

Recalling his long relations with China, the Chief Adviser said he had an attachment with China in introducing Grameen Bank and social business there.

During the meeting, he focused on Rohingya crisis, seeking China’s strong role in safe and dignified return of Rohingyas to their home of origin in Myanmar.

Vice Minister of China Sun Weidong warmly welcomed Dr Yunus upon his arrival at Beijing International Airport at around 10:20pm (China time) after approximately a four-hour journey by air from Qionghai Bo’ao International Airport. Kids also greeted him with flowers.

The Chief Adviser spoke at the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference and joined at least eight events, including bilateral meetings, Azad said.

Dr Yunus is on a four-day visit to China through which he thinks the relationship between Bangladesh and China would further be deepened.

The Chief Adviser will participate in three roundtable discussions on different themes – Sustainable Infrastructure and Energy Investment, Bangladesh 2.0 Manufacturing and Market Opportunities and Social Business, Youth Entrepreneurship and the World of Three Zeros at the same venue, where he will exchange views with CEOs of various companies, experienced individuals from the Social Business Circle, high-ranking officials of renowned Chinese companies, business representatives and the young generation of Bangladeshis and Chinese.

US President Donald Trump, in a message to Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, expressed confidence in advancing bilateral relations between the two nations and promoting regional security in the Indo-Pacific.

In a statement issued by the US Department of State, he highlighted the significance of this year's celebration as Bangladesh prepares for its upcoming national election.

"This celebration comes at a pivotal point in Bangladesh's history, as the Interim Government prepares the nation for elections that will allow the people of Bangladesh to choose the path forward for their nation," Rubio said.

He emphasised the US's support for Bangladesh's journey towards a bright and democratic future, expressing eagerness to continue the partnership in promoting economic development and regional security in the Indo-Pacific region.

Remittances near $3b mark, set new record before Eid​

Remittances have reached a record high ahead of Eid, with inflows totaling USD 2.94 billion in the first 26 days of March. Of the amount, USD 197 million was received in the last two days alone.

With four days remaining in the month, the figure is expected to surpass the threshold of USD 3 billion, setting a new milestone. According to Bangladesh Bank, the country received USD 2.52 billion in remittances in the previous month, February, averaging USD 113.2 million per day.

The nation is set to celebrate the first Eid after the ouster of the Awami League regime through a mass uprising in August last year. Inward remittance has now been higher than ever before. According to bankers, expatriates are preferring formal channels while sending money home due to declined money laundering.

The bank officials also said the longstanding dollar crisis in banks has eased due to the rise in remittances, and the exchange rate has become stable. The banks are now purchasing remittances at a maximum rate of Tk 123 per USD, as set by the central bank.

Remittance flow in March​

According to Bangladesh Bank data, remittances stood at USD 1.66 billion in the first 15 days of March. After four days on 19 March, the total reached USD 2.25 billion, with USD 130 million received on the final day alone.

The amount rose to USD 2.43 billion by 22 March, to USD 2.70 billion on 24 March, and USD 2.94 billion on 26 March. The daily average inflow was USD 110 million in the first week and USD 120 million in the second week.

Usually, remittances peak before Eid. An amount of USD 450 million was sent in the five days leading up to Eid-ul-Fitr last year, averaging USD 90 million per day. The trend suggests that remittance inflows could further increase in the next few days.

July protest, from the onset, was a plot to oust the government and take the nation towards a path of anarchy & terrorism. In hindsight, Hasina was fighting for the greater good of the nation.
As soon as she left, our country went into a chaotic state and to this day, we have zero law & order with businesses closing down every day. Garment workers have been deprived of their Eid bonuses & salaries due to garments not being able to function properly. Almost all the mega projects have been discarded along with massive decline in exports. Adding to all of these woes is the menace of extremism.

Aynaghor, money laundering in billions by Hasina from the nation are all cock & bull story. I feel sad and angry that my peaceful country, which left behind Pakistan in socio-economic development and was on path to repeat the same with India, is in the verge of becoming the next failed project.

Bangladesh is lucky Bharat is a pragmatic nation and not one that keeps deep grudges. I think as soon as the political situation improves and the anti hindu attack stories stop coming, they will try to get back to discussions to improve trade relations for mutual benefit. It’s easy to sit back at home and call for business ties cut off but you have to realize Bangladesh and the bordering state Bengal both need economic progress which is heavily tied to good relations tween both nations. Good and visionary governments swallow bitter pills like these.

If Bangladesh is unable to control its Islamist politics problem however, there will continue to be pressure on GOI to do much with an uncooperative regime.

Bangladesh secures a commitment of $2.1 billion in investments, loans and grants from China

BEIJING, March 28: Bangladesh has secured a commitment of $2.1 billion in Chinese investments, loans and grants from the Chinese government and its companies during the "milestone" visit of Chief Professor Muhammad Yunus to China, officials said.

Bangladeshi officials and Chinese ambassador to Dhaka Yao Wen said nearly 30 Chinese companies have pledged to invest one billion dollars in the exclusive Chinese Industrial Economic Zone after the Chief Adviser urged private enterprises to invest in the manufacturing sector in Bangladesh.

China has also planned to lend some $400 million in the Mongla port modernisation project, some $350 million in the development of the China Industrial Economic Zone and another $150 million as technical assistance. The rest of the amount would come as grants and other forms of lending.

"It is a milestone visit," Chinese envoy Yao Wen said, referring to the Chief Adviser's four-day-long first bilateral tour to China.

Ashik Chowdhury, the Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority and Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority, said the visit could propel a "surge" of Chinese investment to Bangladesh.

During the bilateral meeting, Professor Yunus has requested President Xi Jinping to give his "green signal" to Chinese private companies to invest in Bangladesh.

President Xi affirmed that he would encourage Chinese firms to relocate their manufacturing plants to Bangladesh as they look to diversify their production destination, said Chowdhury.

"This visit will play a big part in persuading many Chinese companies to invest in Bangladesh. It is just a matter of time," he said.

On Friday, Professor Yunus and Ashik Chowdhury briefed officials of more than 100 Chinese companies, including some of the biggest in the world, to invest in manufacturing in Bangladesh, especially in advanced textiles, pharmaceuticals, light engineering and renewables. They spoke in three interactive sessions in Beijing.

"So far, the response is very positive," he said.

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have extended greetings to Bangladesh on the occasion of its Independence Day, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and cooperation.

The leaders acknowledged Bangladesh’s progress since its independence in 1971 and expressed their hopes for continued strong relations with the South Asian nation.

Donald Trump has said Washington is confident of advancing bilateral economic development with Bangladesh, while working together on promoting security in the Indo-Pacific.

Trump made the remark in a message to Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, where he greeted the interim government head and the people of Bangladesh on the occasion of Bangladesh Independence Day.

The US president expressed high hopes for the current post-dictatorship transitional phase in Bangladesh. The transition gives Bangladesh a chance "to build capacity for democracy, economic progress, and enhanced security," he said.

"The United States looks forward to continuing our partnership in this coming decisive year," he wrote.

"On the occasion of this Independence Day celebration, please accept my sincere best wishes to you and the people of Bangladesh," he said in his concluding remarks.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin has said Bangladesh-Russia relations are based on well-established traditions of friendship and mutual respect.

"I am confident that they will continue to develop in a productive manner for the benefits of our peoples, and in the interests of strengthening regional security and stability," he said in a message to President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

President Putin wished his Bangladesh counterpart sound health and success, as well as peace and prosperity to all citizens of Bangladesh, according to the Russian Embassy in Dhaka.

Chinese airlines to operate Chittagong-Kunming flights to help Bangladeshi people access Chinese healthcare

BEIJING, March 29: China Eastern Airlines has planned to operate flights from Bangladesh's port city of Chittagong to Kunming to help people from the country's east to take treatment in hospitals in the southern Chinese city, officials said Saturday.
China has dedicated four Kunming hospitals for the treatment of patients from Bangladesh, but the high air ticket cost is seen as a major impediment to travel to the Chinese city.

Officials said the planned flights between Kunming and Chittagong will bring down travel costs and travel time, paving the way for more Bangladeshis accessing healthcare facilities in China.

Nazmul Islam, Bangladesh ambassador to China, said the authorities in Kunming have dedicated hospital floors for Bangladesh people.

"The treatment fees are modest. A patient from Bangladesh pays the same fees as paid by local Chinese people," Ambassador Islam said.

To expedite travel to Kunming, the civil aviation authorities in Dhaka have also moved to cut the air ticket cost for flights between Dhaka and Kunming.

Chinese authorities have said they would open up more healthcare facilities in the country for the Bangladeshi people.

In April, Bangladesh would also send a big team of journalists to Kunming to see for themselves the treatment facilities there.

Last month dozens of Bangladeshis travelled to Kunming for the first time for treatment. They spoke highly of the standard of hospitals there. But several have complained of travel costs.

Bangladeshi police said on Friday (March 28, 2025) they had filed a new criminal case against ousted premier Sheikh Hasina over an alleged plot to overthrow the government that replaced her.

Ms. Hasina is currently exiled in India, her regime's biggest patron and benefactor, after she was overthrown in a student-led revolution last August.

Numerous criminal indictments have been issued against her and top loyalists of her Awami League party, including over a crackdown by security forces that killed hundreds of demonstrators during last year's unrest.

The latest case centres on a virtual meeting attended by nearly 600 Awami League members in December, which police said had conspired to "wage civil war in Bangladesh" with the aim of restoring Ms. Hasina to power.

"Many of them, both inside and outside the country, pledged to continue their fight until their last breath," the case documents stated.

Police spokesman Jasim Uddin Khan told AFP that charges had initially been filed against Ms. Hasina and 72 others, but that the number of defendants may increase as the investigation progressed.

"The number of participants in the virtual meeting was 577. We are investigating their roles, and if found complicit in the conspiracy, they will be charged," he said.

A report from the U.N. rights office earlier this year stated that Ms. Hasina's government was responsible for systematic attacks and killings of protesters as it attempted to hold onto power last year.

Bangladesh is currently being led by an interim administration with Nobel peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, 84, at the helm.

His caretaker government is tasked with implementing democratic reforms ahead of fresh elections slated to take place by June 2026.

Any growing influence of China in its immediate neighbourhood would be of concern to India. Bangladesh is of strategic importance to India, and several places in the country are close to the Siliguri Corridor, also referred to as the Chicken's Neck, a tiny strip of land that connects the northeast states to the rest of India.

While urging Beijing to establish an economic foothold in Bangladesh by leveraging its strategic position as the "only guardian of the ocean" in the region, Yunus said, "The seven states of India, the eastern part of India, are called the Seven Sisters. "So this opens up a huge possibility. This could be an extension of the Chinese economy," Yunus further said at a high-level roundtable discussion on 'sustainable infrastructure and energy' at Beijing's The Presidential hotel on Friday.

Not just the Indian northeastern states, Yunus also referred to Nepal and Bhutan, while he tried to lure China to make investments in Bangladesh.

"That's an opportunity we should seize and implement. Nepal and Bhutan have unlimited hydropower, which is a blessing. We can bring it to our purpose. From Bangladesh, you can go anywhere you want. The ocean is our backyard," Yunus said in Beijing.

"We are the only guardian of the ocean for all this region. So this opens up a huge possibility. This could be an extension of the Chinese economy. Build things, produce things, market things, bring things to China, bring it out to the rest of the world," Yunus added.

Yunus' remarks on India's seven northeastern states came in as he was speaking to several Chinese business leaders in Beijing.

Yunus, during the China visit, also sought Beijing's expertise in river water management and proposed the need for a 50-year master plan.

His remarks drew attention from Indian economist Sanjeev Sanyal, who is also a member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Economic Advisory Council.

"China is welcome to invest in Bangladesh, but what exactly is the significance of 7 Indian states being landlocked?" Sanyal asked on X.

"It is very disturbing and needs clarification. Is Yunus publicly calling for China to get involved in the Seven Sister states of India?" asked Chris Blackburn, a political and security analyst, on X.

An expansionist China has tried to get closer to India's northeast. It has built strategic infrastructure, dams and villages close to the border with Arunachal Pradesh, which it claims to be part of "South Tibet".

India, on its part, has tried to match up with border infrastructure, including the Arunachal Frontier Highway, officially National Highway 913 (NH-913). It isn't just another road but India’s most ambitious attempt to fortify its borders with China while bringing development to one of the country’s most remote and rugged regions.

On March 26, coinciding with Bangladesh's Independence Day, Muhammad Yunus boarded a special China Southern flight for a four-day official visit to China. During the trip Yunus, who also met Chinese premier Xi Jinping, inked several memoranda of understanding (MoUs).

The visit, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Bangladesh, marked a key moment in bilateral relations between both nations.

Yunus's visit to China on Independence Day, coinciding with Bangladesh’s strained ties with India, was no coincidence. It was a message in itself.

"Muhammad Yunus has chosen China for his first state visit and with this Bangladesh is sending a message," Dhaka's top foreign ministry officer, Mohammad Jashim Uddin, told news agency AFP ahead of Yunus's China trip.

Maritime ties were one of the focusses of Yunus' China visit, with Dhaka inviting Chinese firms to modernise Mongla Port and expand the Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone (CEIZ) in Chattogram.

China pledged significant financial support, including $400 million for Mongla Port, $350 million for the CEIZ, and $150 million in technical assistance, with additional grants to follow, according to news agency BSS.

With Bangladesh's economy in dire straits, attracting Chinese investment might be critical for Yunus. But what is difficult to understand is his reference to India's seven northeastern states in his investment pitch.

An expansionist China has tried to get closer to India's northeast. It has built strategic infrastructure, dams and villages close to the border with Arunachal Pradesh, which it claims to be part of "South Tibet".

India, on its part, has tried to match up with border infrastructure, including the Arunachal Frontier Highway, officially National Highway 913 (NH-913). It isn't just another road but India’s most ambitious attempt to fortify its borders with China while bringing development to one of the country’s most remote and rugged regions.

On March 26, coinciding with Bangladesh's Independence Day, Muhammad Yunus boarded a special China Southern flight for a four-day official visit to China. During the trip Yunus, who also met Chinese premier Xi Jinping, inked several memoranda of understanding (MoUs).

The visit, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Bangladesh, marked a key moment in bilateral relations between both nations.

Yunus's visit to China on Independence Day, coinciding with Bangladesh’s strained ties with India, was no coincidence. It was a message in itself.

"Muhammad Yunus has chosen China for his first state visit and with this Bangladesh is sending a message," Dhaka's top foreign ministry officer, Mohammad Jashim Uddin, told news agency AFP ahead of Yunus's China trip.

Maritime ties were one of the focusses of Yunus' China visit, with Dhaka inviting Chinese firms to modernise Mongla Port and expand the Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone (CEIZ) in Chattogram.

China pledged significant financial support, including $400 million for Mongla Port, $350 million for the CEIZ, and $150 million in technical assistance, with additional grants to follow, according to news agency BSS.

With Bangladesh's economy in dire straits, attracting Chinese investment might be critical for Yunus. But what is difficult to understand is his reference to India's seven northeastern states in his investment pitch.

Yes, it is becoming extremely difficult to post here due to what I would dare say is very biased moderation. There was absolutely no need to merge the topic with this thread, as it has nothing to do with Hasina's resignation. I feel very strongly about women's rights, which is why I started this thread. We can have multiple discussions on Hindutva, India, Modi, etc., but a single thread on Islamists gets merged. In my opinion, as long as no community rules are broken, everyone should be allowed to express their views openly. Actions like this only discourage regular and long-time contributors like us. I will probably limit my posting going forward.

It has been almost 9 months since Bangladesh achieved real freedom. August 05, 2024 should be declared as the independence day of Bangladesh. It was the day when Bangladesh stopped being an unofficial colony of India. It was the day when Bangladesh got rid of Awami League/Hasina. May they never return.

Since then, Dr. Yunus and NCP have managed to do many great things. Corruption has gone down. Economy has improved. There is now freedom of press. Many new trade relations have been established. Many deals with India have been overturned (long overdue). Relation with China has become even stronger. Bangladesh-China bhai bhai. Bangladesh-Pakistan bhai bhai.

Job is not done yet. Many more good works are needed. Dr. Yunus is on the right track. His job should be to leave Bangladesh in good shape for upcoming young leaders.

Tasks for Dr. Yunus/NCP moving forward:

- Ban Awami League. Identify all Awami League supporters/members. Monitor them; some of them may have to be detained and even executed for crimes against Bangladesh.

- Keep on reversing many of Hasina's disastrous policies. Policies which were benefiting India and hurting Bangladesh.

- Strengthen ties with China.

- Keep on making great trade deals with various relevant countries (minus India).

- Rewrite constitution.

This has very less to do with politics but more of an opportunisim. Again, question remains the same...if we can have multiple threads on India including every trivial matter of a Tandoori roti fight in a UP marriage, why cant we discuss the ongoing protest going on in Bangladesh for women's equality?

Bangladeshi interim cabinet bans all ousted Awami League party activities

The interim government in Bangladesh has banned all activities of the former ruling Awami League party headed by former influential prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted last year in a mass uprising.

Asif Nazrul, the country’s law affairs adviser, said on Saturday the interim cabinet headed by the Nobel peace prize laureate Muhammad Yunus decided to ban the party’s activities online and elsewhere under the country’s Anti-Terrorism Act. The ban would stay in place until a special tribunal completes a trial of the party and its leaders over the deaths of hundreds of students and other protesters during an anti-government uprising in July and August last year.

“This decision is aimed at ensuring national security and sovereignty, protection of activists of the July movement, and plaintiffs and witnesses involved in the tribunal proceedings,” Nazrul told reporters after a special cabinet meeting.

Nazrul said the meeting on Saturday also expanded scope for trying any political parties involving charges of killing during the anti-Hasina protest being handled by the international crimes tribunal.

He said a government notification regarding the ban would be published soon with details.

Hasina and many of her senior party colleagues have been accused of murder in many cases after her ouster last year. She has been in exile in India since 5 August as her official residence was stormed by protesters soon after she left the country.

The UNs human rights office said in a report in February that up to 1,400 people may have been killed during three weeks of anti-Hasina protest.

Saturday night’s dramatic decision came after thousands of protesters, including supporters of a newly formed political party by students, took to the streets in Dhaka and issued an ultimatum to ban the Awami League party by Saturday night. The members of the student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami party also prominently took part in the protest.

There was no immediate reaction from Hasina or her party, but the chief of the Jatiya Nagorik or National Citizen party, Nahid Islam, who is also a student leader, applauded the Yunus-led government for its decision.

The student-led uprising ended Hasina’s 15 years of rule, and three days after her fall Yunus took office as interim leader.

The service aims to bridge the digital divide, particularly in areas lacking reliable fibre connectivity, by delivering fast, stable internet via satellite.

Customers now have the option to choose between the “Starlink Residential” package, priced at Tk 6,000 per month (approx. INR 4,500), and the more affordable “Residential Lite” plan at Tk 4,200 (approx. INR 3,150). Both options require a one-time installation fee of Tk 47,000 (approx. INR 35,000).

The rollout comes just 90 days after Starlink received its licence from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) on 29 April—a process officials say is the fastest Non-Geostationary Orbit (NGSO) satellite internet licence approval in the country’s history.

Originally proposed at Tk 7,000 (approx. INR 5,250) a month, the final tariffs are the result of negotiations aimed at increasing affordability. Each Starlink terminal can cover an area of 20–30 metres, sufficient for up to three rooms in a multi-storey building.

The government is also working on a financial package to make Starlink more accessible to organisations providing citizen services, potentially through microcredit, financial institutions, and banks.

Bangladesh cancels $21M defence deal with India amid trade disputes

Bangladesh has cancelled a $21 million defence contract with India’s state-owned shipbuilder, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE). The contract was for an advanced ocean-going tug for the Bangladesh Navy. GRSE confirmed the cancellation after talks with the Bangladesh government. The cancellation marks a setback in defence cooperation between the two countries.

The deal was awarded in July 2024 and was seen as a key part of India-Bangladesh military ties. Bangladesh did not give an official reason...
