What's new

[VIDEOS] How good is Chris Woakes?

Has to bowl with that new ball . Preferably around 8-10 overs before lunch itself.

Whatever little he can do in Asia will be in that phase.

This guy is the very definition of a home-track bully. And now he's not even that anymore. It amazes me how England were okay pushing out Anderson to 'look to the future', but not him.

He is coming up on the end of a reasonable career. Surprisingly his batting hasn't clicked on these flat wkts this summer.

I still believe Eng should take him just as a squad member to Aus. If wkts are like last year's BGT where ball was swinging as well as seaming then he is a better pick than playing trash spinners like Bashir and he contributes with bat.

He's visibly lost pace. He use to bowl in 140s. In this series, he's in low 130s or late 120s. Batters are finding him easier to negate now.

I don't recall him ever being faster than mid-130s. His strength has always been relying on swing

@Nikhil_cric
No he was medium pace early on in his career. And was dropped in 2014 to add pace which he did. I remember him bowling in 140s starting from Pakistan 2016 series till 2019 wc atleast. Hadn't noticed his pace till this series and was surprised it had gone down now. But that's probably because of age. Pushing Anderson into retirement looks silly in retrospect considering their bowling is lacking a leader and bite.

Woakes has been a pretty ordinary bowler in this series. Not sure about his selection for the next game if Gus is fit.

He was good at this peak. But, he has clearly declined. I can see him retire or getting dropped soon.

He was pretty quick when he came on to the scene.

In the 2016 PAK tour of England , I'm pretty sure he was averaging 140 kph (87 mph) for most of that tour.

Performances against Pakistan need to be taken with a pinch of salt. Even Crawley scored 267 against Pakistan, you take out that score and his stats look even worse.

I wasnt talking about his performance. Just talking about his pace. He was the fastest bowler in that series , except for maybe a couple of spells by Wahab Riaz.

64 runs in six innings. 10 wickets in eight innings.

Chris Woakes, one of England’s key players, has been off-colour in the ongoing series against India.

He was good 5-6 years ago. He is currently not good enough and should retire in my opinion.

Should be rested for the 5th test against India... He has been mediocre in the series. Nothing special.

England provide injury update on Woakes after shoulder issue

Chris Woakes sustained a suspected shoulder injury while fielding during the final Test against India at The Oval.

England are sweating on the bowling availability of Chris Woakes after he walked off injured late on day one of the fifth and final Test against India at The Oval.

The all-rounder had to leave the field having sustained a suspected shoulder injury while saving a ball hit to the boundary by Karun Nair at long-off.

Woakes landed awkwardly on his left shoulder during his fielding attempt, and was in visible pain before walking off the field with his left arm wrapped in his sweater.

Teammate Gus Atkinson provided an update on the fitness of Woakes at the end of the day's play and is hopeful the experienced right-armer has escaped serious injury.

"I don't know too much about it, but it doesn't look great," Atkinson said after India reached 204/6 at stumps on a rain-affected day on Thursday.

"It's a big shame, last game of the series, and when anyone gets injured, it's a shame. I'm hoping it's not too bad, and whatever it is, he'll get full support from everyone."

Woakes had bowled 14 overs so far in this Test, claiming the crucial wicket of KL Rahul, while conceding 46 runs.

His injury added to England’s growing list of concerns, with the team already missing several key players for the all-important final Test, including captain Ben Stokes.

Woakes' absence would leave England with an attack short of experience, with the rest of the attack having a combined 18 Test caps for England.

Atkinson collected two wickets from 19 overs on the opening day and indicated he was ready to step up with the ball over the remainder of the match should the team be without the services of Woakes.

"Definitely, I feel fresh, I feel good," Atkinson said.

"I know I've only got this one game to play so I can push the limits a bit."

Woakes ruled out for remainder of final Test against India

The England quick had sustained a blow to his shoulder while fielding on Day 1 at The Oval.

In a major blow for England, fast bowler Chris Woakes has been ruled out of action for the ongoing Test against India at The Oval.

A statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board stated that Woakes, who sustained a nasty blow to the shoulder on Day 1 of the fifth Test, will play no further part in the Test match.

A further assessment shall be made at the end of the series.

The incident that led to the injury took place in the 57th over of India's first innings when Woakes, stretching to make a dive at the boundary to save a run, injured his shoulder. The England pacer received immediate inspection from the team physio and was forced off the field.

Earlier in the day, Woakes had struck early with the new ball to remove Indian opener KL Rahul as India finished the day six wickets down with 204 runs on the scoreboard.

The injury comes as a big blow for the hosts, who are leading 2-1 in the ongoing five-match ICC World Test Championship series.

England are also without the services of captain Ben Stokes, who was ruled out of the series decider due to a right shoulder injury.

Having scripted thrilling wins at Headingley and Lord's, England hold the advantage against the Shubhman Gill-led Indian side as the fiercely contested series heads towards a conclusion.

Pacer plans major fitness call ahead of England's Ashes duel

Injured Chris Woakes is looking at the best possible way to get fit ahead of England's Ashes Down Under later this year.

The 36-year-old suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder on day one at The Oval and is awaiting scan results to confirm the extent of the damage.

A vital cog in the English bowling lineup, Chris Woakes says rehabilitation could be a risk he’s willing to take as he aims to be fit for this year’s Ashes challenge in Australia, rather than opting for surgery on the shoulder injury sustained during the fifth Test against India.

During the series-deciding fifth Test at the Oval against India, Woakes came out to bat with his left arm in a sling on a tense final morning as England chased a series-clinching victory, but fell short by six runs. The series was drawn 2-2.

With the first Ashes Test set to begin in Perth on 21 November, Woakes aims to take part in the duel Down Under.

"I'm waiting to see what the extent of the damage is but I think the options will be to have surgery or to go down a rehab route and try and get it as strong as possible," Woakes told BBC Sport.

The bowling all-rounder, who has featured in 62 Tests for England, then explained as to why he had a preference of undergoing a rehab over surgery.

"I suppose naturally with that there will be a chance of a reoccurrence, but I suppose that could be a risk that you're just willing to take sort of thing.

"From what I've heard from physios and specialists is that the rehab of a surgery option would be closer to four months or three to four months. That's obviously touching on the Ashes and Australia so it makes it tricky.

"From a rehab point of view you can probably get it strong again within eight weeks. So that could be an option, but again obviously still waiting to get the full report on it."

Woakes’ courageous return to the crease came with England needing 17 runs for victory. Batting at number 11, he did not face a ball but ran four runs in his last-wicket stand with Gus Atkinson.

The all-rounder received widespread praise for his determination, though he admitted the reaction took him by surprise.

"In my eyes it [to go out to bat] was never a question. It was just a matter of 'I was always going to do that' and I believed anyone else in that dressing room would have done the same. So it's not like it was just me making that decision.

"But yeah, I suppose it's quite surprising how much people have sent the love, sent the support and said how brave it was. But as I said, in my eyes it was just business as usual.

"When you get the opportunity, you do what's best for your team. In that moment it was to go out there and try and find a way with Gus at the other end to try and get us over the line.

"Unfortunately, it didn't happen but I'm grateful and thankful that I put up the fight and tried to do it for the team."

England pacer shares key injury update ahead of Ashes

Having suffered a dislocated shoulder during the final Test against India, Chris Woakes has shared a note on his recovery.

After a gruelling Test series against India, England shift their attention to the Ashes Down Under later this year, and pacer Chris Woakes has conceded positive news with regards to his recovery.

Woakes, who sustained a dislocated shoulder while fielding during the fifth Test against India earlier this month, believes he’s recovering better than he anticipated.

Speaking to Sky Sports on the sidelines of The Hundred, the England quick made an appearance without an arm sling.

“Certainly good news for me. That's the best way to look at it,” Woakes told Sky Sports.

“Obviously out of the sling and feel like I can move it a lot better now which is good two weeks down the line.

“I suppose once you get a little bit more movement into it, feels little bit more normal. But still a lot of work to do.

“Going to try and (stay) focused on the rehab and get it as strong as possible. Ideally not for surgery for now but we'll see how that goes and hopefully we can get it nice and strong again.”

The update from Woakes comes after he shared with the BBC Sport earlier this month that he was still looking to opt between a surgery and a rehab to deal with the injury.

Woakes had picked up a nasty injury on the opening day of the series decider against India at The Oval.

Despite being ruled out of action for the remainder of the Test, Woakes would walk out to bat with his left arm in a sling on a tense final morning as England chased a series-clinching victory, but fell short by six runs.

The news would come as a positive for England, who have another five-Test series assignment against arch-rivals Australia starting November 21.
