He is a proper top order bat. Very impressed.

He is class . I think he will get a 70 odd tomorrow and maybe give england a handy 30 40 Lead

County cricket is producing some very talented all-round cricketers in recent times.
Finn should make way for Stokes.
Having both Stokes and Woakes in the same XI is a big luxury for England.
May be drop Moin too and play a proper spinner? He has been disappointing with both bat and ball. I think England should really invest in a proper spinner.

Honestly India and Pakistan are master in creating world class player for other teams...Just lookup the stats of woakes before this match they are preety medicore in test and now pak gifting their 11 wickets to him and now this guy look like a beast....cant believe they gave 11 wickets to him and i also remember pak also made woakes look like micheal starc in odi series against them when he was not even at his best...![]()
Are you talking about Yasir?Superstar cricketer. What a performer.
This will be his best series, we have successfully made him look like mcgrath.
He's better than Imran Khan and Jacques Kallis
Has potential but atm he is kind of like the fast bowling version of Ashwin. King at home, gets thrashed abroad, but has some degree of skill with the bat.
Averages 64 with the ball and 21 with the bat abroad. Ashwin 33 and 30. Yeah, similar.2

Moeen Ali is the problem. Averages 41 with ball and 32 with the bat.
Ali really looked lost in India. Started out reasonably well in the first Test, but went downhill fast. Batting was barely tolerable while bowling as completely smashed by Indian batsmen (figures of 0-46 and 2-174 in the last 2 Tests).
Doesn't Ashwin average nearly 60 with the ball outside Asia?
England are forced to play 6 bowlers because of him and that has messed around with their balance. They need to kick him out and get a proper batsman in. They may not win but they'll do better.
No. 42. Mainly due to his performance in Australia.
Moen Ali has performed much better than Woakes. Being a spinner, he has much more potential on these pitches. He is also a much better batsman. Woakes is a tailender here.
And South Africa. However, those were all pretty flat pitches, it has to be said.
However, being outbowled by Moeen and Lyon is simply unforgivable.
Lyon and Ali are good bowlers at home as they get excellent support from their quicks. It's easier when you come to bowl with the opposition at say a 70/4 in the first session. You don't even bowl to the main batsmen half the time.
But yes, Ashwin should be outperforming them.
Any way, this thread is not about Ashwin.
You could make a similar case for Woakes. The guy is not going to run through teams in India, that is the job of thr spinners. However, he's been very good at home and in South Africa, IIRC, so he's definitely deserving of his place.
Is this his first tour away?
No. Toured Bangladesh before this and didn't perform well.
A series of fine performances at home. This is all part of his learning curve. Woakiee is the obvious replacement for Anderson when he retires, who had five years of poor performance overseas.A bowling average of 81.33 and batting average of 14 this series. 6 wickets and 180 runs.
Why is he in the side again?![]()

Hmm. Took eight wickets in two tests, average 23.
He also makes their team as a batsman alone. He's been asked to fill all sorts of holes recently which messes up a player's mindset. Once he's given a set position at #5, he'll start producing the goods more frequently. An important cog in England's team.
Agree. Plus he has been bowling enough to be allowed to bat in the lower middle order.
Woakes on the other hand is not sharing much of the bowling workload (16 overs (~ 8 per day) out of 182 vs 55 for Moeen in last game) and is still allowed to play as a tailender (survived 35 balls across 2 innings and hardly contributed with bat through the series). Moeen on the other hand has a 50 and a 100 which people conveniently forget.
Moeen Vs Woakes doesn't even look like an argument atm.
Record with the Dukes ball:
11 Tests, 42 wickets at an average of 24.
Record without the Dukes ball:
8 Tests, 9 wickets at an average of 69.

Feel like he is another case of being an ATG vs Pakistan.
He is in that select few category of players that we have a knack for making them look ATG material. That average of 24 with 42 wickets is also mostly because of us in the summer of 2016.
4 tests 26 wickets at an average of 16.7.
County cricket isn’t that different from our own domestics.has an average of 25 in first class cricket after 130 games
Inferior version of Anderson. I was laughing at all the hype he was getting against us.
