[VIDEOS] "I expect more from myself in the future" : Shan Masood

Gutsy player

Shan speaking at start of the 2nd Test.

A duck at home isnt what you need when you are already averaging 27 odd with the bat. He has now played 18 tests at an average of 27.11. Unless he is considered an extreme talent which in my opinion he isnt as he stats in FC and in tests with his limited scoring zone also show and not to forget he is 30 year old. I would rather have Sami Aslam or Imam failing who are 23,24 than Shan failing as there isnt much upside as well.

So all set to be appointed as Skipper for Multan Sultans for the upcoming PSL 5....

Big step for him.

So Shan, who barely plays T20s, is clearly well connected to the Tareen family. The Tareen family, we all know, is very well connected to Imran Khan who in turn is very well connected (and patron of) the PCB that keeps selecting Shan as a test opener. The PCB committee also includes Wasim Akram who is IK’s best friend, and despite his legendary status has long been suspected of fixing and nepotism, including a lifetime backing for Ijaz Ahmed both as a player during the days fixing was alleged (Ijaz being a prime suspect himself of fixing 90s matches), and now as a U19 coach. Ijaz Ahmed, in turn, is the person who selected Inzamam’s nephew Imam, the Akmal cousin Babar, Shoaib Malik’s nephew Huraira, and Umar Gul’s nephew Abbas Afridi in his various U19 coaching stints (granted, I think all four of those players are solid and the current U19s deserve a chance, and we got Babar in the process, but you cannot dispute that even with talent you need connections to get opportunities). Shoaib Malik is himself good friends with the Tareen family.

Has anyone else tried mapping out this tree? Would be curious to compare notes.

Finished up on 100(160) [4s-11] - good innings but against Bangladesh will always raise doubts about its true value.

Speaking to the media today

"We are well on track to post a good total"

"At this point, we have three openers in the squad, and all three are capable of big runs for Pakistan"

"In previous Test, both openers scored well and if you look at the track records in international cricket, opening is always a tough job as the new ball can misbehave"

"This was the first time for most of us to be playing against Bangladesh bowlers so there is a good chance that openers can get out as they dont know about these bowlers"

"Openers also get a chance to score well if they are set, in my mind there is the example of Alastair Cook who didnt score in a few innings but then would hit 200-300"

"Because there were just 6 mins left to Tea, my plan with Babar was to not play any big shots"

"It was a soft dismissal and in international cricket not every day you get such easy runs and one should look to convert good starts, but as a team we are in a good position and it will be the intention of the remaining batsmen to capitalize on this situation and to get to a winning position"

"If you look at how well Babar Azam is doing, you will see that it took him some time to get good in Tests; So its a lesson for all of us that if opportunities are provided to our batsmen, we will also get results"

Genuis? :D

What a ridiculous post. Shan did well today. He deserves to be in the team. Nepotism May get you noticed but to stay in the squad you have to deliver. Shan has massive technical flaws. His bat comes down at an angle and he plays away from his body. Yet he delivered and until a better opener comes along lets stop about this nepotism and conspiracy talk.

Any self respecting batsman should be churning out these easy runs at home on a flat surface against an ordinary attack.

Needless to say Shan will need to tighten up considerably when he faces the swinging Dukes ball on English pitches against a far better seam attack than the one he's plundering at the moment.

Oh dear. This didn't age well my friend :))

Criticism was because he wasnt scoring runs even after a lot of opportunities. He has been given more opportunities than many (A point which still stands) but good thing is atleast he has been scoring in last few tests and making the starts count. Still he looses concentration post 100 but hopefully can improve that too. If he can consistently do well for Pak in next few years than I dont think anybody will have any issues.

I really dont understand what the point of this video is. ... Yay, he can memorize some facts, he's not as dumb as a brick/Umar Akmal.

Anderson has him 15-6 in Test Cricket.

Wonder if we will see that battle resume this summer.

Pak needs consistency, patience to produce box-office players: Masood

Pakistan Test opener Shan Masood on Wednesday called for patience and need to give players a long rope in order to produce box-office cricketers like Rohit Sharma, Jason Roy and David Warner.

Masood was part of Pakistan’s home series wins against Sri Lanka 1-0 and the one-off Test against Bangladesh after they lost in Australia 0-2 in the five-day format.

Asked how Pakistan can also produce box-office openers like India’s Rohit, England’s Roy and Australia’s Warner, he said: “There is fear of failure which is human nature. They got security over a long time. The England team started with a plan in 2015 and got result in 2019 (by winning the World Cup). They stuck to a core of players.

“Consistency is very important. We need to accept defeat if we have to set a goal like that. As a nation we focus on short-term goals. Instant results cannot be the way to groom players,” said the 30-year old in a video conferencing chat with reporters which was facilitated by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

“Also these cricketers you named got advantage of home cricket. We never got that. This is for the first time we got. We don’t get to play that often also. For box office players you need consistency. We need to build players for a four-year period.”

Masood also said he is not worried about being labelled as Test player, saying he has the right kind of people around him to guide.

He also said this team under coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq is going in the right direction and results will soon start showing.

“Misbah bhai is trying to bring in new culture. Fitness is being given a lot of importance. During this lockdown also players are being worked on. A lot of things is being done. Also culture is there...camaraderie is there among players and I hope as soon as cricket resumes we can carve out a legacy for ourselves. We hope to make a mark.”

Veteran leg-spinner Imran Tahir had asked Masood-led Multan Sultans to take a leaf out of Chennai Super Kings’ book and focus on their basics despite talk of the team being full of players who are not quite young, he also revealed.

Masood led Multan Sultans to the top of the Pakistan Super League table before the tournament was postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The team had the likes of former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi, South Africa spinner Tahir, England all-rounder Moeen Ali among others. Tahir also played for CSK in the Indian Premier League.

“Imran Tahir had said he played in IPL for CSK and CSK average age is highest in IPL. He said we used to do our basics correctly. We played as a team. It is important to have balance of experience and youngsters.”

On closed-door cricket, Masood said he is ready as it will give fans and them something to look forward to.

“We really don’t want to be at home but these are tough times. Behind closed doors is fine as there will be matches on TV and we will also get to play. If situation demands that spectators cannot come, behind closed doors is fine. It won’t be the same without spectators but we will be happy to play cricket in some way and I am ready.”

there is this guy and than there is asad shafiq= full of excuses

I love his attitude , very hard working player and i hope he atleast scores 6k test runs

masood is a hard working cricketer hes also proberly second best player of short ball and has good technique against new ball

He needs to start preparing to coach Pakistan the moment he retires. Although he doesn't have the talent to play, boy does he have the brains.

Every single word out of his mouth is gold. If only some of our other players had this mindset and thinking ability.

He would turn out to be a wonderful COMMENTATOR if he chooses to be one after he retires, atleast would be an upgrade over Ramiz, Bazid and other present Pakistani commentators.

He can also be a become a good administrator and can be a part of PCB ala Graeme Smith/ Sourav Ganguly but for that he should start by heading/working for a provincial team for period of 2 or 3 years.

He doesn’t have the energy to be a commentator. I would much rather he teach our youngsters everything he learned during the reformulation of his technique

Well done to Shan - continues to impress and rightfully awarded a promotion.

I expect him to become the next Test captain over the next 12 months, hopefully.

Azhar seems to be past it and is an uninspiring leader. Perhaps he can squeeze out a couple more years but he should certainly not be captain.

It seems like that after 2021 world test championship final which we ll probably fail to qualify azhar might be sacked but first test for him will be the english tour
lets see how the team and how most importantly azhar performs there?

I don’t think he deserves the chance to captain in England. It should be given to Shan as soon as possible.

Shan and Sharjeel will be the starting pair for odi and test sooner rather than later. No point in investing in any other batsmen. Give these two a long run and Pakistan cricket will benefit

Shan better than imaam abid ali ?

I really want Shan to do well on England tour - really big opportunity for him.
