[VIDEOS] "I expect more from myself in the future" : Shan Masood

Superb innings today. Proud of him. Hope this is not a false dawn. It's good to see he accepted his flaws and worked on them, it's a very good attitude.

Really done well for Pakistan and himself. Some very good domestic stats and performances for Pakistan A

#3 Seems to be his spot, can we have Azhar and Imam open with Rizwan for Sarfaraz and Fakhar at 6?

Great innings today.massive improvement.I just hope he is consistent and this is not a one-off.

Agreed. The desire to go up a level, iron out weaknesses and step out of one's comfort zone is truly admirable, but sadly it's a rare trait when it comes to some Pakistani seniors... :moha :sarf2 :shafiq2

This is a start but still he was selected for the wrong format. We don't need another 30-35 average test player.

Another impressive day from him - now needs to get a big hundred - AND his bowling!

Another impressive day from him - now needs to get a big hundred - AND his bowling!

Miggy bhai, the guy need a support from the other end to score a big one. I'm surprised he's gotten decent scores thus far as Pakistan's batting line up has fallen like a pack of cards around him.

I have never said such thing a pak batsmen but seems like he really worked on his technique and he looked solid.. Need to be permanent.

So why can't other batsmen fix their issues? Is it the player or our setup? or in our academies there are not good coaches who can develop players... Which one is it?

He has proved me and lot of others wrong with his comeback. He seems to be a hardworking cricketer who has enough gherat to get rid of the nepotism tag. Imam should take note from him. If he can improve, why can't others who are much more talented.

Shan is educated in British system, extremely fit & hard working, intelligent, great communicator and at the right age. He should be made PAK Test Captain in next Test series after WC. If he can make ODI side, can be thought of that as well. If PAK is to play a specialist captain, that too a batsman - it has to be Shan.

Remarkable to see what hard work can do. He was only PAK player comfortable against short staff and first time I saw him pulling, while Luke’s of Azhar seems to be forgetting. Also, Shan is born and brought up in Kuwait, schooled there as well, which suggests his certificate age is probably genuine, around 29 now which easily could have been between 23-25 had he been born in PAK & grew up as usual, so I do belive he has at least 7/8 years left in the game at highest level, if not 10-12.

Shan for Test captaincy - the demand starts from today, those who agree, join me.

He should definitely open in ODIs imo. He was playing confident strokes and he will be useful as opener.

Just over 6 months ago everyone and their mother had written Shan off and convieniently referred to his inclusion in the team as nepotism. Goes to show how you really can’t take the ‘experts’ view on this forum.

The same is happening with Imam right now lol. When imam got the loi call everyone said he’s suited for tests and now the same posters say he’s better in Odis.

What a joke

I thought about this a few weeks ago, it is inevitable really the captaincy but I rather have him focus on his batting and become a world class opener for Pakistan to help mitigate some of our issues at the top order

have already joined.

Should be captain in all 3 formats. MMHS

Will do million times better as Captain for sure - be it as specialist one. And, he won't make PCT's press conference uncomfortable for fans, neither would yell at players in front of camera.

I think we need to take a step back and examine why Masood should attain the Test captaincy before any other candidate.

Before the sour taste left in our mouths from Sarfraz’s stint, Masood was deemed as an appointment of nepotism.

However, two decent knocks and fluke wickets in SA will not change the fact that he has a mediocore FC record behind him.

His posh-style will not suit well with a lockeroom of individuals who have attained the perfect balance between a seniority-fetish and lackadaisical youth.

They are immature, inadequate, and unfit to be able to respond to the astuteness that a simple individual such as Masood will require.

But the writing is on the wall because Mickey Arthur’s prayers have been answered and Masood has appeared as a Godsend.

He can perform the following under Mickey Arthur...

1) Communicate on a higher level due to speaking English.

2) Be meek enough to not want to butt heads with Mickey but understanding enough to incorporate his instructions.

3) Become a puppet-captain; essentially the Wilhelm II to Mickey’s Bismarck. A reversal of the Kohli-Shastri dynamic.

4) Has a powerful relative within the PCB chain of command therefore will be very hard to remove once made Test Captain.

5) Scores runs while taking wickets and operating at a pristine level of fitness after listening intensively to the coaching staff? Every coach’s wet dream.

Not every1. There is a thread I started after he made 35 odd at OT and survived a testing evening spell Vs Jimmy and broad,
Will try to locate it

Do you actually think he will do a good job? Will the PCB make him captain?

I wouldn’t jump on the bandwagon until he makes the team on merit.

Some of you have really lost it

Shan Masood as captain. Based on what? One fifty and a forty-odd? :))) :))) :)))

What a turnaround for him. He was a joke figure, TTF or the poster kid for nepotism and now people wanting him not just in the team but as captain...... wow mind blown!
Wonder what happens if he fails in a couple of innings will he revert to a figure of fun..... :13:

Shan is the best cricketer in Pakistan at the moment. :srt
Wait till he fails in the next test. Opinions change rather quickly.

To be fair Shan has done alright. He has shown a bit of class. He should have scored a 100 though.

The other gem we missed on this tour was Sami Aslam. He could have been our Dean Elgar

Yeah he's shown he is international standard but he's not done well in domestics recently.

I doubt he intentionally does anything wrong, but Shan is a smart guy, how can explain the discrepancy between the amount of chances he gets he has gotten at Intl Cricket ( and still being in the big picture) desptie having relatively average domestic performances and worse Intl performances.

Cold hard facts : Shan averages 34 in FC cricket, even the season that many hear lauded prior to his selection, he only averaged around 43 in , which is the below the career average of others.

Now people can rightfully say that we shouldnt pay to much attention to averages, okay lets look at intl performances, 9 tests at an average of 24, where he looked utterly out of dept against anderson in UAE, let alone anderson in Eng. I felt sorry for him, it was though to watch

Also before people point to his list A average, look at the strike rate of of 72

There are better options that dont even get a look in at the camps, we have to ask ourselves why

He had a strike rate of 72 in List A in 2017 and now has a strike rate of 82. This shows his improvement

He’ll definitely do much better as specialist captain - cricket is an intelligent man’s game. Intelligence doesn’t mean you have to be Oxbridge grad, but education does help. Besides, Shan is the hardest worker in the team, a good listener (otherwise he won’t have improved his game like this - his other 2 U19 batch mates are Umar & Ahmed), and a great communicator. So, he ticks every box for the last 10%....

First 90% is to make the starting XI on merit and be there unconditionally; that’s as batsman captain, his performance & reputation should be enough to keep him in XI without any question, even there is a temporary slump (once Mark Taylor went for 17 Tests without a 50 as AUS Captain - they didn’t sack him, neither he dropped down the order).

I am still not sure about the first 90% but PCB’s other options after Sarfraz are Asad & Azhar 😩😫.,..,,,.. I’ll take a chance with Shan for sure.

Pakistan in for a thrashing here but at the very least I hope Shan scores big.

Check Page 1 of the thread to see what it takes to change opinion these days.

That only tells that guy has earned his cheese - nothing wrong in that. The best such example was also from PAK, 47 years and counting - an 18 years old kid went to UK from family contact, 3 years later came back on own credit & stayed there for best part of 2 decades.

Unfortunately can't tell that about PAK's current captain and his Bhakts - performance indeed has changed, but if you open some threads, not much change between 1st & last page.

Join you.
Although by choice I will never appoint a Batsman-Captain for PCT (Tests). It helps that Shan is an acceptable part timer.

It's a culture thing.Batting Captain in PCT means batsmen are going to compare their runs against captain's. Our batsmen stop taking responsibility in calamities. Apparently I dont need to highlight examples. It's everyday stuff.

Pakistani bowlers somehow are less prone to these liabilities.

It is in fact Sarfraz who is Mickey's Willhelm II. Too meek to have any ground of his own. Frankly speaking however, I don't think Mickey has any personal or nefarious vendettas. He seems to be more passionate about the Pakistan Cricket Team than many Pakistani players playing for the team.

Shan Masood has played nicely but would be good if he can make it count and come up with a big score.

The embarrassing situation right now with Pakistan’s batting is that Shan could score 30 here and a couple of fluent 20s in the next test and he would probably still be Pakistan’s best batsman on this tour and we could be boasting about his great performances in South Africa in test cricket for years to come....

Playing short balls fine till now.

Please don't immediately make him the next Saeed Anwar. He isn't.

Have to see more of him, but the improvement is definitely there.

Remember, we made the blunder of making Sarfraz captain after his short purple patch.

Shan has been woeful his entire career. Except this series. Imran Farhat also did well in SA last time.

Another quality innings by Shan Masood. MashaAllah.

He got out to a quality delivery.

Well done Shan keep going.

If he can score in these conditions, he can score anywhere. Was always okay against spin anyway.

Deserves a long rope.

Boss put the runs to one side for a second. He doesn't look like getting out at any stage, his game is in order!!
The runs will follow automatically when u have his work ethic n attitude to go with his game being in order

Probably the only Pakistani player on this tour who has shown some command.

The solid mainstay of this team.

Also a huge slap on the face for those who say that Pak domestic setup can't produce good technique players.

Until he was there I had hope he'll be able to take the team out something not expected from any senior of the team.

He top-scored by opening and playing the new bowl. Need more changes now in the team alongwith him replacing Imam.

Praise from Mickey Arthur at end of SA Test series

"I thought Shan Masood played exceptionally well at the top of the order, he did a hell of a good job for us"

Big positive from this series. I really hope he keeps it up. Deserved a 100. He has proven a lot of us wrong.

Shan Masood has gone through somewhat of a resurgence, he has a lot yet to proof although he seems to be up for the task.

Great to see him bat the way he did in tests. Hopefully he can keep on working hard so much more and remain in good form for the team

Being the best batsman of the tour, he will not find his place in the odi playing eleven. The following will be the team

Fakhar ct final century + only odi batsman in the team who can score at 100+ SR
Imam 4 hundreds in 9 matches + last test performance will keep him in
Babar
Hafeez
Malik
Sarfraz
Shadab
Faheem or Imad
Hasan
Amir
Shaheen shah

Rest of them are undroppable. That is how pak lose matches and series

Great opportunity for Shan to book a place in the World Cup squad in the upcoming series vs Australia

Will he play? Really want to see Masood and Haris Sohail play and perform...and stay healthy.

Shan excited at getting ODI reward for domestic performances

"I think that's important because what it shows that performances in the domestic season get importance," says Shan

Sharjah, 21 March 2019:

Pakistan's fast-rising Test opener Shan Masood is ready for a one-day international debut against Australia in the first of five one-day internationals in Sharjah on Friday, admitting its a reward for his persistent good performances in domestic matches.

The affable left-hander scored 632 runs in the regional one-day cup before amassing 654 runs in the departmental one day cup in 2017-18 season. He then piled up 352 runs against New Zealand "A" including a century in each innings feat in Dubai in October last year. He also scored 238 runs in five one-day matches against England Lions, also in UAE last year.

That brought him a place in the Pakistan Test squad for the tour of South Africa. An unfortunate injury to Haris Sohail opened the gate for Shan in the first Test in Centurion and, as they say, the rest is history.

The 29-year-old is now hoping for a ODI cap with regular opener Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam rested for the Australia series. Shan is ready for the 50-over format.

"I was hoping that I would get a chance in the Asia Cup," Shan told pcb.com.pk. "But anything can happen at any time but again everything happens for a reason. The reason why it did not happen in the Asia Cup or in the South Africa series because, probably, I would be getting a chance against Australia so I am very excited."

Shan admitted his inclusion means performances in Pakistan's domestic season are rewarded and do not go unnoticed.

"I think that's important because what it shows is that performances in the domestic season get importance," said Shan. "It shows that those guys who are dropped from the national side they have an opportunity to perform in domestic cricket.

"I was dropped from the Test team. I was never in the ODI team I went back and scored runs in one day cricket and I got rewarded for that and I am very excited."

Head coach Mickey Arthur believes new players will get an opportunity in the Australia series to fill up a few vacant spots for the World Cup 2019, starting in UK from May 30.

Shan hoped he can grab one.

"I think there is high competition for the World Cup," said Shan when asked of his chances to play the World Cup. "I am fortunate that I am picked for the Australia series and hopefully I will be getting a chance. Everything is up to me how well I do in this particular series.

"There is a very good competition for places, there are a few open spots and that's why some players have been rested. So its a great opportunity so I will hopefully take this opportunity and things in my hands."

Shan, a very good student of the game, said all players need to grab the opportunity to cement their places.

"Look I have been part of the system for about five or five and half years. Yes, I did not play three consecutive Tests in those five years. I got three in a row in South Africa finally but rather than hoping for more opportunity I also understood how the system works.

"It is a result driven industry and competition is tough. It also teaches you that you might only get one opportunity and you have to make use of that opportunity. So I am very glad that when I played those Tests in place of Haris, which I wasn't playing initially, I was able to get runs and set myself up. So its again up to me when I am starting one day cricket so if I get runs over here I will make things easier for myself and I will get more opportunities."

Shan hopes coming good in the harder five-day format will give him confidence.

"Look again you have to back yourself to what you have done before. I won't be comparing ODIs to my Test standards. The Tests are different, what gives me confidence is that Test cricket is harder than white ball cricket and I have been able to score some runs in my last series.

"What I will be taking with me would be the last three years of domestic one day cricket and the cricket that I played with the Pakistan "A" especially because that was played in UAE against New Zealand “A” and England Lions so hopefully I can take that with me and get a reward for my domestic performances."

Shan said Australia will not be taken lightly in the series.

"This isn't a typical Australian side from before. It is with a new management and a new set up with a new culture. They have taken their time as we saw when they came for the Test series here they weren't as good as they are now. They went back and made some changes, they have made changes in the system and have come back strongly. "

Shan admitted Australia are flying high after their recent 3-2 series against India in India.

"To beat India in India is probably one of the most phenomenal achievements in a bilateral series. We are not going to take them lightly at all. A lot of things are also at stake for us, places for World Cup up for grabs, and playing against this Australia side there will be no better opportunity to perform as a team and individually, so its a great opportunity."

He always sounds like a smart cookie. And be batted extremely well vs SAF....him and Baber were the only positives for Pak during that test series vs SAF.

Wishing him all the best vs Aus. :) I hope he does really well

Lets see if he can translate excellent List A performances into ODI cricket against an inform Australia side.

This is an amazing chance for shan. Who knows maybe he'll even get selected for the WC squad if he performs well.

Looking good Shan!

Expect him to get a big score today

Wow, I didn't know Shan averages 56.52 in List A cricket.

That's about as good as it gets.

Looks like a million dollars but then gets out against the run of play... heck!
