[VIDEOS] "I expect more from myself in the future" : Shan Masood

"If" Shan and Khurram Manzoor are selected for the ODIs no one say that are "non deserving" anymore.

Both of them have done everything that is required to do in domestic to earn a call back.

I hope for pak cricket's sake that this guy really has something offer. After all that glitters isn't gold.

Dont be fooled by his runs in the tournament. The pitches are batting paradise, domestic cricket quality is pathetic so anyone can score loads of runs. Once they go back to intertional arena then they offer nothing and becomes liability on the team. Look at shehzad hes the best example of this. Gets dropped, scores runs and then fails again at intertional arena

Now this is a huge conundrum for the selectors.

- He merits selection based on his performances in OD tournaments.
- We all know how poor he is against quality fast bowlers in international cricket.
- If the selectors do not pick him people will say there is no merit and all selections are based on sifarish.

What to do?

Now you see why selectors pick players based on PSL performances and domestic kings like Fawad, Sadaf do not get selected.

Why is it a conundrum, anymore than any other selection decision?

We know he is questionable in certain conditions in TEST cricket. But plenty of players in every country who don't get selected for Tests yet still merit places in ODIs sides.

Haven't we learned by now that each format should be treated as its own game?

The connection to the PSL and Fawad and Sadaf is not clear. Also because neither is technically speaking merely a domestic king.

Fawad scored a daddy ton on international debut and averages 40 in Tests; Sadaf has been player of the series on two A team tours.

It is not apparent that the PSL, a T20 tournament, should be the exclusive guide for selecting ODI players. The reason for why selectors pick PSL performers is that a televised performance acts as a firewall for them.

Some people including the chief selector himself are of opinion that the technical side of their game should be given more importance. We all know how Shan Masood struggles against quality fast bowlers the reason this could be a difficult decision for the selectors. You just can not ignore Shan Masood's performances even though people have written him off and will bash the selectors if he gets selected.

i don't see a great national furore erupting if shan is left out, but there will of course be lobbying by daddy, and since daddy has managed to get him selected before, on the basis of far worse performances, one may expect that he will be given a shot.

Only God knows whether it’s Good or Bad.

But,

What a turn around from Super fit Shan Masood.

Heaps of List A runs again average or below bowling units.

As far as domestic performances go, he can't do much but selectors must also be able to see something a little extra in players, a spark lets say. Seeing shan bat in England and elsewhere, he doesnt seem to have the metal fortitude or the stroke play. I may be compleetly wrong, so might as well try him in an ODI series, as Fakhar desperately needs a partner.

But no one is scoring remotely as many runs, as consistently, as Shan. Why would you select someone who is doing worse than him, on these supposedly benign pitches, to partner Fakhar? And he is a different case from Sehzad. Shehzad has been tried in internationals, multiple times. The best domestic performance should not be the basis for infinite selection for the national team, but it merits one selection at least, one would like to hope.

Whatever is the standard of domestic cricket, this is the only test leading to the selection for national team and Shaan has passed in flying colors.

If you look at the following list you'll see Pujara in the top 5 along with Masood in the all time best list A averages but does that mean he is ODI standard? - of course not. http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/con...ds/282914.html

Stats without context is meaningless - these averages don't tell you how Masood and Pujara would do against quality pace attacks, big run chases and etc.

You need to actually watch the player than just rely on stats. For instance Sharjeel and Kamran were MOTM in PSL 1 and PSL 2 respectively with similar stats but one had the gift of timing with his shots against quality pace whereas the other was a slow track bully with major technical issues.

It is just unfortunate the standard of first class cricket in Pakistan is of such a low standard. Filled with players of trundlers, poor fitness, batsman who have not been coached well.

100 for him in Pakistan Cup - doing really well in the past few months.

Shan Masood With The Pakistan Team?

What's Shan Masood doing with the Pakistan team? Isn't he out injured with a knee problem...But I won't mind his inclusion in the Pakistan ODI team if need be

Hopefully Babar is fit so they don't select him. By the looks of it he may be on standby would take talat over Shan anyday.

Shan's been in brilliant form recently, While Talat looked out of all sorts in the Scotland series...Talat is a class act but I wouldn't mind Shan opening with Fakhar

Nepotism at its ugly worst. Should be banned from attending any camps etc. Shameful useless way below average but well connected cricketer

Amazing innings from that Sri Lanka game in 2015! He does not get enough credit for his talent.

From his presser in Asia Cup today:

“The preparation will remain the same, we have got our processes that are standard and suits the team. Everyone knows their roles. I don’t think it (our preparation for the next India match) is going to be any different, what is going to be different is going to be the way we play on Sunday or any other game starting with Afghanistan. I think that if you look at bowling attacks, especially spinners, Afghanistan have the best bowling attack in this tournament. If you talk about UAE conditions, they have as much experience of playing here as we do. So we won’t be taking them lightly at all. They beat Sri Lanka, who is a really good team. Afghanistan is a really good opposition, and in our match against them we will focus on our strengths and our effort will be to use that to negate their strengths.”

Does this mean he may be in playing X1? If yes then that will be interesting...:inti

164* against New Zealand A.

Looks nothing but class.

Deserves another chance on merit. It's hard to be this prolific no matter what the standard of cricket is.

Seems Shan Masood is the man who may well step in to stop the rot at the top?

he should be given a chance in ODI's and test in my opinion and he definetly deserves a go now

Well, since that interview guy has delivered more wherever he had been picked for domestics or A team, and in both formats.

Not too long before he gets back into Pakistan side, another good performance vs England Lions

On merit if there is any opener who deserves the opener spot in ODIs than its shan masood.

Imam will continue to play thanks to chacha.

I have been a big critic of Shan Masood and his ability. But the kinds of numbers he has put up lately, he has to be inducted at the top of the order . . How do you do that though? With Fakhar going no where and Imam at least in ODIs has done enough to warrant a continued place . .
With Shan Masood, when you combine his numbers with his fitness and fielding, he becomes quite an asset.

bro can you please identify match winning knocks of imaam in odi?Guy has to open with Fakahr.

Deserves a shot in ODIs ahead of Imam. These performances cannot be ignored.

Cant ignore the Oneday numbers. However against better bowlers he will still be examined. His weakness outside the offtump could be exploited in the early overs. The upside is he doesnt have to face a relentless barrage from the same bowlers in ODI. Just has to bat sensibly as the field placings will also help him..could potentially be a ODI specialist for us??

Now getting captaincy of the A team in 2-T20 games vs England Lions!

His chances of a Test recall improving by the day....

So far so good vs South Africa today - virtually opening the innings. Can he get a big score?

He has improved alot since his last appearance. Good luck to him...hope he scores a ton here so that we could get rid of Imam.

MashaAllah looked 10 times better than imam.
I said he had the ingredients when he got the 35 at old Trafford. I made a thread that evening when he battled through the evening session Vs Jimmy in tough conditions.
Just needs to get his head in the right place. Dismissals like today won't help!!
But he looked in good order

He only scored 19 but can see a lot of potential in Shan, can see him scoring fine quarter centuries (25s ) in the years to come.

It’s about time TV broadcasters stopped the bias against Pakistani batsmen and showed the 25s (quarter century) along with the 50s and 100s in the batting stats

Greatest 19 in the history of Test cricket.

Let's wait until he scores a century outside Asia before celebrating his rebirth.

Does he actually have any scoring shots? Every time I've seen him he bats like a nightwatchman.

Looked a lot better than I last saw, and definitely far better than Imam. Unlucky dismissal.

Some people here are such simpletons. A lot of the hype in the match thread was just light-hearted banter. Stop taking everything seriously. Chill out.

I was still lying in bed when he was batting but I heard he looked a lot better today which is good. Let's see how he does in the 2nd innings.

Shan Masood needs to keep batting with the positive intent he showed in the first innings.

He would score unless he gets a peach.

The only way out on this wicket is to bat positively.

Pakistan have a real chance in hand.

Blockathon would be counter productive.

If he can get a 50 here that will shut the haters up and also put Pakistan in a good position. He is playing some nice shots BUT he needs to be better with running

He has transformed into an awesome strokemaker, amazing to see. Credit to him for doing the hard yards. #Respect

Shan looks like the perfect no.3. With shaky openers its good to have a number 3 who knows how to play against new ball and pacers

He has improved considerably from the last time he played for Pakistan.

Pakistan players do not generally improve after making it to the national team. Babar Azam and Shan seem to be the rare exceptions.

Based on this performance, Shan deserves a consistent run in the team.
