I don't think dropping the top scorer from the prior series where conditions are relatively familiar would've been a sound call on the selectors' part. Especially if the replacements had flopped as well. But Pakistan shouldn't persist with him after this series if he doesn't perform.

The great Australian Test team bat-off didn’t go according to plan with several hopefuls all falling cheaply and potentially dashing their dreams.

Pakistan continued their dominance at the crease on the second day of a three-day tour match as they reached 428 before going all out. They then turned the blowtorch on the Aussies and skittled them for 122 in only 56.4 overs.

Then came the moment everyone was waiting for with two spots up for grabs in the Australian Test team. An opening spot alongside David Warner as well as the sixth spot in the order.

The opening spot for the Test team was expected to be a fight between Marcus Harris, Joe Burns and Usman Khawaja and with selector Trevor Hohns watching on in the stands he would have been hoping the decision was made for him with one batsman standing tall.

Sadly both failed to make any major impact although Harris did have at least a minor impact on the scoreboard.

A pitched up delivery from Imran Khan and some lacklustre footwork from Burns saw the ball rip straight through him and clatter into the stumps for a golden duck.

The disastrous outing from the batting order wasn’t what Hohns or Langer would have been hoping to see with spots up for grabs.

Sadly it wasn’t just the top order that failed horribly on the second day with no one in the Australia A squad able to put runs on the board.

Imran Khan was the main destroyer with the ball in hand, collecting five wickets in stunningly economical fashion.

Meredith was solid at the other end, making a career-high 19 runs from 79 deliveries. He faced more balls than the opening four batsmen combined.

The duo also batted together longer than the first nine wickets.

Australia will take on Pakistan in a two-Test series with the opener to get underway on November 21 in Brisbane.

A star-studded Australia A side has been bowled out for 122 in a calamitous tour match performance against Pakistan in Perth, where forgotten man Cameron Bancroft has provided a timely reminder of his staying powers.

Joe Burns was clean-bowled for a golden duck and fellow Test hopefuls Marcus Harris, Usman Khawaja, Travis Head and Will Pucovski also fell cheaply as the hosts crumbled on day two of the pink-ball clash at Optus Stadium.

Australia A were reeling at 9-57 in reply to Pakistan’s 428 before Bancroft (49) and Riley Meredith (19no) restored some pride, batting longer for the 10th wicket than the first nine combined.

The resistance came to an end when left-arm quick Shaheen Afridi found Bancroft’s edge shortly before stumps.

Having only been added to the XI when Nic Maddinson withdrew on mental health grounds, Bancroft has at least given national coach Justin Langer and chief selector Trevor Hohns something to think about after coming in at No.6 and facing 155 balls.

They might have more questions than answers after veteran seamer Imran Khan (5-32) spoiled a much-anticipated Australia A bat-off on a pitch that appeared to have livened up significantly from a tame opening day.

Imran skittled Burns with his first delivery before Afridi cleaned up Harris (16) with a superb off-cutter.

Harris is the incumbent Test opener but his inconsistency has potentially opened the door for Bancroft to partner David Warner at the Gabba despite the West Australian’s mediocre Sheffield Shield form this season.

Head (13) and Khawaja (6) both fell to the part-time offspin of Iftikhar Ahmed, Head picking out backward point and Khawaja caught behind.

Imran then found the edge of Pucovski (5), who had been duelling with Head to claim the vacant middle-order spot in Australia’s Test side. Australia A skipper Alex Carey chopped on to an Imran delivery for a seventh- ball duck to give Pakistan a crack at the tail.

The collapse came despite Pakistan being a bowler down with 16-year-old quick Naseem Shah withdrawn following the overnight death of his mother. The tourists opted not to replace Naseem, preferring to retain the tour match’s first-class status.

Imran Khan Jnr was being used in UAE pitches as a workhorse and did well, good to see him being utilized again.

That’s not how it should work. Abbas and Imran are a type of bowler. You can’t have both in a test squad. Assuming selectors are convinced that Shaheen afridi is back to full fitness and the youngster tear away fast bowler has a role, there’s room for only one of them.

Joe Burns was clean-bowled for a golden duck and fellow Test hopefuls Marcus Harris, Usman Khawaja, Travis Head and Will Pucovski also fell cheaply, with the hosts finding few answers to an incisive and disciplined Pakistan attack.

Pakistan were 0-7 at stumps on Tuesday, leading by 313 runs in the three-day match at Optus Stadium.


Australia A were reeling at 9-57 before Bancroft (49) and Riley Meredith (19no) restored some pride, batting longer for the 10th wicket than the first nine combined.

Bancroft's ability to dig in and withstand difficult periods was what first elevated him to selection as a Test opener.

While Harris has the benefit of incumbency, his patchy record means he is no certainty to open the batting with David Warner in the first Test at the Gabba.

But Bancroft concedes he may be coming from too far back to capitalise, having been dropped during the Ashes and out of form in the Sheffield Shield.

"Probably highly unlikely, I would have thought," Bancroft said.

"But if you're not winning, you're learning, aren't you? I learned a lot today, had a lot of positive little wins out there with my batting.

"I walk away and keep being positive, keep looking to improve. That's all you can do."

Pakistan's fast bowlers have tended to struggle in Australian conditions but the impressive performance of veteran seamer Imran Khan (5-32) and left-armer Shaheen Afridi (2-42) in Perth will buoy the tourists' confidence.

"They were really consistent," Bancroft said.

"They didn't go searching at all. They held a good area and really tested our patience, and I'm sure a lot of us wish we could have gone out there and done it a bit better."

Worth remembering we also rolled over a CA XI before our previous Test series in Australia but this looks a far stronger and more recognisable team than that. Australian batting reserves seem thin.

Abbas Imran and Shaheen is a sensible trio for the first test . You don’t want two rookies playing together . Whilst their is an element of surprise they also could get carted around the park. Any bowler can on their day but the above three provide a mixture of experience and youthful exuberance .

From what I have seen (Imran Khan in 2016), Imran and Abbas operate around the same speed but Imran has a slightly higher max speed, but he rarely bowls max speed.

Imran is definitely faster. Imran is usually between 130-135, whereas Mohammad Abbas is mostly between 125-130.

I think this is best FC match by Pak in aus in last 20 yrs. There is now a template for competing.

Babar, Haris and Shafiq need to control the inns. Every inns atleast 2 of them have to cross 50+ score

Abbas and Immy to bring 78-81 mph line and length aag to tie down Aussie top order. Yasir's job to ensure that Aussie tail doesn't wag.
Shaheen to be the 'make things happen' wildcard in the pack.

And somehow hope Steve Smith slips on a banana peel or something

Why are some people saying that Imran should play in place of Naseem. They are 2 completely different types of bowlers. Imran and Abbas are 2 very similar bowlers and only one of them should play. Naseem is an aggressive option. It would be stupid to play both Imran and Abbas ahead of Naseem. If both Imran and Abbas are to play then they should drop Yasir and stick with Naseem.

is Abbas fit enough to play? haven't seen much of him after his injury. for the first test I would go with: Nasim Shah(if he is strong enough to recover from the trauma otherwise it is understandable), Shaheen Afridi, Imran Khan and Kashif Bhatti with Iftikhar being the 5th option.

Shan, Azhar, Haris, Babar, Shafiq, Rizwan, Iftikhar, Kashif, Shaheen, Imran, Naseem.

Yasir Shah will be smashed all over at the Gabba, so pointless playing him, don't think we need to expose imam against a tough Australian bowling, Shan has handled the short ball quite well and Azhar must step up his game.
