Congratulations Jason Roy for hitting the highest ODI score for England

Played an amazing innings today. Smashed 180 off 151 balls.

He could have got double ton but received a minor injury and after that Starc clean bowled him.

But it was surely an epic innings. Well done dude.

Lovely player to watch.very natural strokemaker but sometimes premeditates against spinners needs to become better against spinners.
But Against fastbowlers he is very natural and always goes with the flow.
He is mixture of sehwag and maccullum.

Yes I'm talking about Babar Azam, he is a good limited overs player but so far he has failed in all his 21 tests innings, didn't even scored a single century in his 11 test matches. How about that ?

Unlike Roy, Babar definitely has the tools to become a very good test player.

He is grossly overrated here. He scores runs against poor attacks in easy conditions (for the most part). He is a rank average player.

Babar is brilliant ODI player. No doubt.

In Tests, PCB needs to kick out Sami Aslam, Shan Masood & Babar Azam. They have failed after playing 25 24 and 22 test innings repectively.

Not a single test century by Sami & Babar after 25 and 22 test innings respectively. Shan has just 1 century after playing 24 test innings. Just imagine that according to modern day cricket.

I don't think so.

Players like Finch, Maxwell, Stoinis, Morgan, Roy, Butler also don't play tests. They are brilliant ODI players like Babar.

He's not only touted as the best ODI batsman, but the best batsman in Pakistan full stop which means he's a must for the test team. Should be limited in the T20's as not been effective there either.
 
Good player.

Not a great one though. Will get Poms off to flying starts , but will fail sometimes. But Poms have enough depth in batting to cover for that.

And we have azhar ali opening with Hafeez at 3 while England have Roy. What a shame. We really are garbage.

Babar Azam and Jason Roy are different type of players though. You can't say that cos Roy doesn't play tests but is good in ODI's that every player who isn't great in Tests should stick to white ball cricket. You could compare Roy perhaps to someone like Zaman or Sharjeel Khan but poor logic comparing him to Azam.
 
Batsman Jason Roy will miss Surrey's final T20 Blast group game because of a self-inflicted facial injury.

The 28-year-old was hurt when he threw his bat down in the dressing room after being out first ball against Hampshire and it bounced up into his face.

"I'm extremely embarrassed and apologetic to my team-mates and fans for this moment of stupidity," he said.

Surrey must beat Glamorgan on Friday and hope Sussex lose to have a chance of reaching the quarter-finals.

Roy has played 31 T20 internationals and 65 one-dayers for England, but has only managed one half-century in this summer's Blast competition, and was annoyed with himself after being bowled by Hampshire's 17-year-old Afghan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

"Following my dismissal on Wednesday evening, I threw my bat into the ground purely out of self-frustration," he added.

"I've never been so motivated and so positive about my game, and I assure you I will learn from my mistake as I am my own biggest critic."

It has not been a great week for Surrey, with all-rounder Scott Borthwick suffering a broken wrist in training for the Hampshire game.

Could England’s ODI opener Jason Roy be the answer to their top-order struggles in Test cricket?

His list of achievements in white-ball cricket is long, and growing by the day. He holds the record for England’s highest ODI score – 180 v Australia – and has shared in their highest ODI partnership, an unbeaten 256 with Alex Hales v Sri Lanka in 2016.

He has opened for England in ODIs more often than anyone else since the last Men’s Cricket World Cup, and no one has played more than his 73 ODIs for England without playing at least one Test match.

Following the retirement of Sir Alastair Cook, and with England having struggled even before his departure to find suitable candidates at the top of the order. Since Andrew Strauss retired in 2012, they have tried 13 men in the position. None have lasted more than 20 Tests in the role, or made more than 1,000 runs from the top two.

With the Ashes approaching, Roy’s name has floated towards the top of many people’s lists, searching for someone comfortable in the international arena and setting the tone of a contest. His first-class record, averaging 46.45 since the start of 2014, also marks him out as a Test candidate. He’s feeling comfortable with the attention.

“There are people that want me to play, people that don’t want me to play,” Roy said to Sky Sports. “I just want to play to prove it to myself really. To see where I’m at and to see if I can actually do it. You never know what is going to happen but I just want to put the right stepping stones in and make sure that I’m selected, that is the first process.”

One man who knows more opening in Test cricket and Jason Roy than most is former England opener and Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart, who has emphatically backed his charge’s Test chances.

“He is someone who wants to play Test cricket,” Stewart told Sky Sports. “He is such a talent that I believe can play all forms of the game. I said two years ago that he is good enough to play Test match cricket. He has to have a good World Cup and if he does that, I reckon his name will be near enough at the top of the list to play in that Ashes series.”

Roy has rarely opened in first-class cricket, but Stewart thinks his experience in ODIs should stand him in good stead.

“Jason is opening in one-day international cricket. Twenty20 and Test cricket are miles apart, but in the first 10 or 15 overs of 50-over cricket you still have to respect that new ball,” he told BT Sport. “I don’t see it as a big issue for him and he’d cope with the stepping stone up to Test cricket.

“The Australia attack is a challenging attack, but Jason’s method is a solid one. He’s a good stroke player and a good hitter of the ball, but he can defend well too, which you have to be able to do.”

Would have loved to see the battle of him and Bairtstow vs Fakhar and Sharjeel ,had we used our sense and included Sharjeel for the series and the WC squad. Sharjeel would have showed who's the boss
 
England batsman Jason Roy said his century against Pakistan was "very emotional" after a "rough morning" in hospital with his baby daughter.

The opener struck 114 from 89 balls as England claimed a tense three-wicket win in the fourth ODI at Trent Bridge.

"This is a special one for me and my family," Roy, 28, told BBC Sport.

"We had to take my little one to hospital at 01:30 in the morning. I stayed there until 08:30 and came back for a couple of hours sleep."

Roy, whose daughter is two months old, told Test Match Special on Friday: "I got to the ground just before warm-up and cracked on.

"It was a very emotional moment."

The century was the eighth of Roy's one-day career and his second of the year, following his 123 against West Indies in February.

The Surrey batsman struggled with a back problem at the start of the domestic season and missed England's opening ODI against Pakistan.

He returned at the top of the order in Cardiff, making 87, and he hit 76 in Tuesday's victory at Bristol.

"I'm not in the form of my life. It was not my most fluent of innings," Roy added.

"It was an extremely special feeling to get over three figures. I didn't see it coming."

Clearly no one is a harsher judge of Jason Roy than the man himself.

Ok, so Trent Bridge was a minor misstep for the Surrey man. He dropped a dolly, was dismissed early in the chase, burned his team’s review in the process and ended up being fined half his match fee in the narrow defeat by Pakistan.

But such is his form for England in recent months – and at this point it is probably more accurate to say years – that any mention of ‘Roy’s redemption’ here in Cardiff feels faintly absurd.

This is a man with so much credit in the England bank that he might soon have to open a second account.

And yet motivation comes in many forms for professional sportsmen, and clearly Roy wanted to prove a point on Saturday.

Well prove it he did, and Bangladesh felt the full force.

We knew coming in that Roy likes it at Sophia Gardens – he averaged nearly 64 here in ODIs – but this went way beyond that.

He crashed 153 off only 121 balls with 14 fours and five sixes. In total he now has nine ODI centuries and only Andrew Strauss has managed a higher individual score for England at an ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

But this was not just about the weight of the runs scored – and it was plenty, England’s highest ever team total at a World Cup of 386-6.

It was also about the manner in which Roy got to work.

No-one is a better barometer for this England team than the Surrey man. Skipper Eoin Morgan has said as much before.

And it was clear that the nerves of the Trent Bridge defeat were still in the air at the outset after losing the toss and being put in by a Bangladesh side that beat England in both of the last two World Cups.

Spin had proved Roy and Jonny Bairstow’s undoing so far, and here it was the world’s best ODI all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan giving them a stern early examination.

Roy prodded and poked, walked across his stumps and tied himself in knots. The fearless England of the last four years this was not, as they limped to 15-0 off the first five overs.

But thereafter the shackles came off, Roy cut loose and dragged Bairstow, England and a quietened crowd with him.

The pace of Saifuddin was clearly to his liking but it was his footwork against the spinners – decisive and destructive in equal measure – that pleased the most.

His century arrived off 91 balls and Joel Wilson was given the same treatment as the Bangladesh bowlers, Roy inadvertently sending the umpire flying as he collided with him mid-celebration.

The right-hander has now reached three figures six times in an ODI since the start of last year – and England win every time he does so.

Talk about a potential Ashes spot is not going to go away, and it was interesting to note Roy now has as many ODI centuries as he does first-class ones.

But all of that matters little right now. A World Cup win – a much-needed settler after the surprise reverse to Pakistan – was all that was on Roy’s mind.

That he perished chasing six sixes in an over off Mehidy Miraz also mattered little. He had set the stage and England were not going to waste it.

A one-legged Jos Buttler could now be promoted up the order and duly put on another fireworks display.

And Chris Woakes and Liam Plunkett could swing for the fences with freedom at the death, breaking records and Bangladesh’s spirit in the field.

The visitors rallied with the bat in an ultimately futile chase. But Roy still had enough gas in the tank to scramble and take a screamer of a catch at point to quell the fightback.

Redemption? Not even close. But revelatory? Maybe.

England’s ICC Champions Trophy hopes went up in smoke here in Cardiff two years ago. This time around Roy and the boys appear to be made of sterner stuff.

Not only is he extremely talented, he is also very gutsy. England had no chance of winning the World Cup with him injured.

It is time to bring him into the Test team as well. He can take Australia to the cleaners in the Ashes.

Very good odi player. Yea he was one piece of the cog.

However the inclusion of archer made their average attack into a great one. He just adds another dimension that they didnt have before.

They wouldnt have won without fast tracking him, even if roy didnt get injured.

Archer has definitely transformed their attack.
 
Blame the umpire here. Bairstow shouldnt have reviewed yes. But that decision was poor
 
He makes a massive difference to Bairstow and the whole England team. Look at the results in this WC when he has played and when he has not.
 
Roy should definitely be suspended...awful behaviour on field, not walking off after been given out, swearing and arguing with umpires.
 
Jason Roy has been fined 30% of his match fee for breaching Level One of the ICC Code of Conduct during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup match between England and Australia at Edgbaston today.

Roy was found to have breached Article 2.8 ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to showing dissent at an umpires decision in an international match. In addition to the 30% fine, two demerit points have been added to Roy’s disciplinary record.

The incident occurred during the 19th over of England’s innings when Roy showed his dissent at being given out.

Roy admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Ranjan Madugalle, of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees and, as such, there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Kumar Dharmasena, third umpire Chris Gaffaney and fourth official Aleem Dar levelled the charges.
 
I remember Roy was struggling with form in the last Champions Trophy. He came back to form like a champion.

Brilliant batsman who can dominate both pace and spin.

As great as his innings was, his reaction to Dharmasena was equally pathetic. Went on and on and while walking off, clearly used abusive four letter words in the direction of the umpire. You can't treat an umpire like that. Hypocritical also, considering he was let off similarly - the not-given caught behind down the legside vs India. At that time he had no qualms about staying on but here was wailing like a toddler. Even in the dressing room you could see him throwing things around.

The funniest was when he tried to take a review. Looked like a clown because he was the one who seemed to have given Bairstow the go-ahead to waste their review.

Unsurprisingly the English hype-machinery and their crap media have successfully downplayed his behaviour.

You have to back players with his confidence levels. If he can survive the first spell he can win you Test matches. England don’t have many great options anyway - Jennings is a lamb waiting to get slaughtered.
 
In this era of flat tracks in odis, roy is the best in the world at this moment!!
A true monster, in the same league as gayle, when he was at his peak!
But gayle was also a good test bat, which few give him credit for. He has a triple hundred for crying out loud!
Roy is untested at test level, but what i have seen of him against pakistan in this world cup, suggest he will struggle on pitches which are not flat and offer the bowler something and with a slip cordon present!
So not a chris gayle, more an alex hales type of player!

talk about rohit being lucky. this is guy is even luckier. Average mediocre batsman. only good on belter pitches. Any movement or bounce available on the pitch then he becomes a sitting duck.

In tests it’s not about first spell

Your technique gets tested against reverse swing and spin too.

Opener must have ability to bat time in tests
 
When will his disgraceful attitude be properly addressed every time he gets out, he needs some anger management!
 
A good batsman on belters no doubt, but comes across as a bit of a lout. Maybe he learns from Stokes.

Sets the tone superbly in a way that reminds me of Sehwag for India.

Don't see him succeeding in Tests against the red Dukes, pushes at the ball with hard hands.

It will swing - they're using the same red Dukes from last year with a more pronounced seam, which swung prodigiously.

If it was a subcontinental player ( non Indian) he would have been suspended for 3 matches.
 
Jason Roy says he would embrace the "strange" feeling of playing cricket behind closed doors again if that's what it takes for the sport to return in England later in the summer.

Roy batted at an empty ground in Karachi in February while representing Quetta Gladiators in this year's Pakistan Super League due to the coronavirus pandemic, before being one of a group of English players to leave the tournament early.

The 29-year-old and his fellow players spent plenty of time in isolation while in Pakistan, principally due to safety fears before the pandemic spread, and said that at times he found life equally as odd batting against Karachi Kings at an empty National Stadium.

"There was no atmosphere - it was as simple as that, to be honest," said the Surrey batsman.

"It was a very strange feeling. I think that as a batsman I'm used to with the bowler running in, it being relatively quiet - you learn to block out the crowd - but as soon as that ball is done you hear the crowd going absolutely beserk.

"Over there, when that was the case, it was just like dead silence - it was the strangest thing. You could hear your mate calling for ones and twos. You don't have to work on body language. It was quite strange and quite hard to get up for but it was just something that we knew we had to deal with."

All professional cricket in England and Wales is currently postponed until at least July 1 and play will not return until the ECB is able to formulate a post-lockdown strategy in partnership with the Government that doesn't compromise player or spectator safety.

That may mean games would have to take place in bio-secure environments at grounds, like the Ageas Bowl and Old Trafford, that have an hotel on site and without fans present.

"I'm more than happy to play behind closed doors [in England]," said Roy. "I just want to play some cricket, to be honest. For us to be able to go out and play some cricket would be an incredible feeling - it feels weird. I feel like a kid again but I guess we are governed by the Government. There are way bigger things going on."

Roy experienced an "absolutely ridiculous" 2019 - winning the Cricket World Cup on home turf, with his throw from the deep securing the run out of New Zealand's Martin Guptill to secure England's triumph, before making his Test debut against Ireland only to be dropped after four Ashes Tests with an overall average of 18.70 from 10 knocks.

While he concedes that his shot at opening in five-day cricket has gone for now - Rory Burns and Dom Sibley stepping up in South Africa this winter, before Keaton Jennings was called-up for the tour of Sri Lanka before the series was postponed - his desire to retain a Test place in the middle-order remains unabated.

"I think the boys have got that [opening spot] covered pretty well now - I think they've found a couple of nice players to fill that spot," said Roy.

"I've worked very, very hard to try and crack the nut in Test cricket and for it to get taken away from me that quickly - obviously after a couple of bad scores - was really heart-breaking, so there's no doubt in my mind that I'm going to be trying my hardest to try and get back into the side and try to prove myself wrong, more than anything.

"Scoring a weight of runs in white-ball cricket and then not being able to do that in Test cricket was upsetting for me because I really felt like I could. I still feel like I can but I just need to fight for my position again and get back in there and prove to myself that I can actually do it."

A blistering 70 off just 38 balls in February's first T20 against South Africa was a brutal reminder of Roy's attacking prowess in the shortest format of the game, which makes the current uncertainty about whether the ICC World Twenty20 will go ahead later in the year all the tougher to bear.

"I've just been concentrating on the now, to be honest, but if players aren't able to prepare in the right way or get over to Australia safely then it makes sense to postpone it.

"But if it goes ahead and professional cricketers are told we've got three weeks to prepare for the World T20, you can be sure that all of the boys will be putting the yards in to make sure they are ready.

"I think all of the boys are on edge, waiting for the call - so we know we've got a month's turnaround or six weeks to get in the net and hit some balls. I think the boys will be as ready as they can be."

Delhi Capitals on Thursday announced the signing of Australian bowling all-rounder Daniel Sams as the replacement for Englishman Jason Roy, who will not be a part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 due to personal reasons.

Sams, 27, recently earned a national call-up after impressive performances in the Big Bash League for the Sydney Thunders earlier this year.

Sams will be joining fellow Australians Marcus Stoinis and Alex Carey at the Delhi Capitals camp.

On joining Delhi Capitals, the left-arm fast-medium bowler said, “The IPL is a huge platform for any cricketer, and back home, we all follow the tournament extremely closely every year. I feel fortunate to be a part of it this year, and I’m thankful to the Delhi Capitals management for giving me this opportunity. I can’t wait to join the rest of the players in the UAE.”

Earlier in the day, 30-year-old Roy was ruled out of England's three-match T20I series against Pakistan due to a left side strain. The opener was hurt during practice at Old Trafford on Tuesday, and a scan on Wednesday revealed the injury.

But he will remain with the England squad and will and look to recover in time for the white-ball series against Australia in Southampton starting September 4 with the first of three T20s.

Lol you’ve never seen the guy in person have you even on tv he looks nothing close to 5”8 he’s easily 6 but anyways non issue it’s a shame we won’t get to see his belligerent hitting

he barely looks taller than Morgan who is a piosqueak. Roy gets dwarfed by Anderson who is 6'2. looked a good 4 inches shorter.

Looked 3 to 4 inches shorter than stokes who is close to 6'1.

Anyway I agree it's a non issue. Many players inflate their height stats in general.

dhoni at one point was listed as 5'11 or close to 6'. he is barely just a tad above 5'9.
 
When was the last time Pakistan beat a full-strength, first choice team in any format? I don’t seem to remember.

ODI series was 1-1 with the decider abandoned due to rain.

New Zealand were without Guptill in both ODIs and T20Is.

Mamoon come on now you’re even gonna say Guptill he performs once in 20 games he has been trash for quite a while now it would have made no difference
