Sometimes you gotta take a punt on guys you think have something unique. England brought Tom Hartley into the test team for the India tour despite him having some pretty mediocre numbers in FC. However iHawk cameras worn by the English umpires in domestic cricket matches gave analytical confirmation that he uses height to good effect, which can be useful on the Indian pitches. You could say that it worked out considering he picked up 7-62 on debut and spun England to one of their greatest test victories.

Unfortunately, people within the Pakistani system do not have the brains to think outside the box like this. Nor are they forward-thinking individuals that would invest in technology. Mehran will probably get selected in the test team after he does well in T20s. Because that has a far greater likability of happening eventhough it defies all logic.
 
Mehran without big turn can’t be a good test bowler however he can be a good T20 specialist in the form of Imad Wasim and might actually do good in ODIs as well , but he just needs to level up his game a bit more
 
Mehran Mumtaz, on the final day of the 1st four-day match against Bangladesh A, took 4 wickets for 84 runs and helped Pakistan Shaheens win the match. I think he still needs to grind in FC cricket before representing Pakistan in any format, no need to rush.

Mehran Mumtaz shared following thoughts after Pakistan Shaheens' victory against Bangladesh A in recently concluded 4-Day Match:

"Our approach was simple to claim their 10 wickets in order to get victory. Our batters had done well. The coach (Jason Gillespie) has given us a simple plan to go for wickets as we had plenty runs on the board. It is always a difficult task to claim 10 wickets in a day on a good batting surface. It was a tough ask but we had good bowlers and we all bowled well in partnerships to claim their wickets."

"At the start of the day, the captain said that as we are fresh now so we should go hard against the opposition. We couldn't get breakthrough early on but after the lunch we got back to back wickets courtesy to good bowling from Dahani Bhai, Alhumdulillah then I bagged 4 wickets and in the end we got the victory."

Mehran Mumtaz is a genuine wicket-taking option. I'm really impressed by the way he bowled on the batting-friendly Faisalabad pitch and claimed the wicket of the dangerous Mohammad Rizwan. Pakistan should utilize him judiciously, as this young, talented, and emerging bowler is a future prospect.

Bagged 3 wickets against Markhors in Champions One-Day Cup 2024

If he performs like this consistently then the National Team call up is not far away

Has looked the most clever spinner in this Tournament thus far. I think he's close to being ready to represent Pakistan. Batting has been underwhelming though.
 
Mehran is a clever bowler , he darts the bowl when there is no spin favor conditions and he bowls slow and try to turn the ball when the conditions are helpful , good prospect for shorter formats.

Excited for his performances
 
Bringing in a rookie with a handful of FC games and that too with an average of 33 is silly.

Selected based on his T20 exploits which just reiterates the narrative of the selectors being clueless.

If the wicket turns, his quick pace will be an asset. I agree that he has played too little FC cricket and it's a big gamble

Even if it turns, does he know what to do?

You can't just turn up and get wickets especially against a very experienced and brutal England batting line up.

Picking players based on potential rather than know how is the reason why Pakistan is failing miserably in Tests and getting beat by teams like Bangladesh.

Huge gamble.

He has decent control and along with his pace it's strength. Ideally you wouldn't pick him but he ain't any worse than the dross we have atm

That's why you pick guys like Zafar Gohar who has picked up 3 fifers in county cricket or Rameez jnr who had a really good FC season and did well against Bangladesh A.

Mehran should never have been picked ahead of those two

This all comes down to the cluelessness of the selectors, management and captain who just pick based on PSL.
 
I hope he gets a game if we are leaving Shaheen and Naseem and then going with Sajid and Zahid then it’s one step forward and 5 steps back would have also selected Faisal Akram and get him and Mehran both in final XI

He doesn’t get enough turn to become a test bowler , Noman is a better option, Noman can be tried in T20s and ODis.
 
Playing in his first game of the QeA trophy 2024, Mehran Mumtaz takes a 5-wicket haul for Rawalpindi in fifth round of the tournament.

This is Mehran's 3rd 5-fer in First-Class cricket in 20 games.

Good knock from Mehran last night in the National T20 Cup game playing for Rawalpindi against Faisalabad. His team lost but his effort was a good one.

he was never good in my opinion. Aarish ali khan has more potential but even he has fallen away T20 is not place to judge but still we need some good spinners and batters from somewhere

It’s not really

He needs to correct his bowling. I don’t think he understands the pace he wants to bowl. His batting reminds me of Muhammad Amir’s….not sure if he really is an all rounder. His primary trait is his bowling and that hasn’t been good enough on Pakistan pitches so far.
 
Congratulations to Mehram Mumtaz on his Nikah. The ceremony was held at a private hotel in Rawalpindi, attended by relatives and close friends.
