Betway SA20 Season 3 window announcement – 9 January to 8 February 2025

Betway SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith today announced that the third season of South Africa’s premier T20 competition will take place from 9th January to 8th February 2025.

The Sunrisers Eastern Cape will be aiming for a third title, having won the first two iterations of the tournament and Smith stated that franchises’ planning is well underway to secure some of the biggest names on the T20 circuit for the 2025 event.

“Following two successful seasons, our plan is to continue to own the South African summer and provide an opportunity for everyone to enjoy some of the biggest names in world cricket, whether in packed stadiums or via the global broadcast.

Our fixtures, auction, and player announcements will be revealed over the coming months and planning is already fully in motion. We can’t wait to bring another incredible sport and entertainment event to life for players and fans,” Smith stated.

With highly competitive cricket, evidenced by the log standings only being confirmed after the last group match in Season 2, record attendance, growing global and local viewership, ever increasing digital engagement and media coverage, and player ratings of above 95% for ‘enjoyment’, the Betway SA20 has quickly positioned itself in the top echelon of global franchise T20 competitions.

AUCTION AWAITS AS PLAYER MOVEMENT WINDOW CLOSES

Betway SA20 Season 3 is primed to be the best-ever yet after the six teams announced high-quality preliminary squads.

All six squads have attracted elite-level overseas players along with retaining the best South African talent.

Each team has also shown their commitment to developing young local players with seven of the eight inaugural Rookies of last season being incorporated into the squads.

There will be a further opportunity to top up their squads at the third edition of the Betway SA20 auction on October 1.

This is primed to be yet another exciting event with 13 auction picks available across the six teams, along with the six Rookie selections.

Back-to-back champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape have not strayed from their winning formula with the retention of the majority of the squad, but will be further boosted with the return of Season 1 hero Roelof van der Merwe.

The 'Bulldog' will be joined next season by England internationals Craig Overton and Zak Crawley. Impressive Proteas batter David Bedingham is also set to debut in South Africa’s premier T20 competition after being added as a Wildcard.

The Sunrisers, therefore, have two auction picks remaining with a purse of R2.845 million remaining.

Runners-up Durban’s Super Giants are certainly aiming to go one step better next season after the procurement of a star-studded international quartet.

Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, England all-rounder Chris Woakes, West Indian opener Brandon King will all call Kingsmead home next season, while Australian dynamo Marcus Stoinis will also return to Durban for a second stint after being recruited as the Wildcard.

The Super Giants have a balance of R2.35 million to spend on their one remaining auction pick.

In contrast, the Paarl Royals have the biggest purse of R11.95 million remaining for just one auction pick in the bank.

The Royals have already significantly strengthened their squad with the addition of former England captain Joe Root and the marquee signing of the first-ever Indian player to participate in SA20 in Dinesh Karthik.

Afghanistan’s mystery spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman is also set to thrill the Boland faithful with his bag of tricks, while English duo Jacob Bethell and Sam Hain have been added to the squad.

The Royals have placed a great emphasis on youthful energy with the retention of South African teen fast bowling sensation Kwena Maphaka along with his SA U19 teammate Lhuan-dre Pretorius.

They have also performed the second trade within Betway SA20 history after releasing Tabraiz Shamsi to the Joburg Super Kings and Dayyaan Galiem heading to Paarl.

The Super Kings will therefore be heading into the auction in search of three players with a purse of R3.925 million to spend.

The Super Kings have placed a major emphasis on strengthening their top-order with the signing of New Zealand opener Devon Conway, who will make an emotional return to his hometown after leaving for the Land of the Long White Cloud, and England’s ODI World Cup winner Jonny Bairstow.

Along with Shamsi’s trade, the spin contingent has been further boosted with the return of Sri Lankan Maheesh Theekshana to the Bullring after missing Season 2.

Local rivals Pretoria Capitals have brought in recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup top run-getter Rahmanullah Gurbaz from Afghanistan and English prodigy Will Smeed.

The Capitals’ movements at the auction will be closely monitored as they need to fill three spots with a purse of R4 575 million remaining.

Last, but certainly not least is MI Cape Town.

The glorious Table Mountain overlooking Newlands has once again enticed some of the biggest names on the global circuit to MICT.

England Test captain and double white-ball World Cup winner Ben Stokes headlines the list along with the return of Afghanistan superstar captain Rashid Khan to the Mother City.

They will be joined by fellow Afghan Azmatullah Omarzai and New Zealand’s premier swing bowler Trent Boult.

MICT will have plenty more business to complete on auction day though as they are still in search of three players with a hefty purse of R8.275 million to spend.

MICT are one of three teams, along with JSK and Pretoria Capitals, that still have the Wildcard option available to them ahead of the December 30 deadline.

All teams are required to incorporate a minimum of 10 South African players, a maximum of seven overseas players and an additional new Rookie player who must be South African in their 19-player squad.

The auction will take place on October 1 in Cape Town and will be broadcast live on SuperSport and streamed on the Betway SA20 YouTube channel.

Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith said at the SA20 India Day, as quoted by a release from SA20:

"I mean, I think we always work with the BCCI. Obviously, they have policies in place with regard to Indian players. The talent in India is so loved in South Africa as well. You can see when the Indian team comes out there, just the talk on the streets, the fans, you know, they can't wait to see these type of players in South African conditions and the competitive nature that it brings."

"And, I think since South Africa came back into sports, India has been a great friend to South Africa. The fans in India have certainly built a strong relationship with South African cricket. So, from the SA20 perspective, India is a very important market for us. The fan base here is cricket loving, and we want to grow and make sure that as many people tune in and love the game."

"Obviously, Indian players help that from our perspective, but quality tournaments that people enjoy watching, Indian fans enjoy competitive cricket. So, for us, those are all sort of key ingredients. We don't know what the growth looks like into the future. We think with the six IPL franchises that we're perfectly situated to be able to attract top talent out of India, if allowed."

"Look, I mean, cricketing-wise, it's obviously different. We saw in the IPL last year, I mean, batting conditions in the early season was, I think, you know, around South Africa, in our six stadiums, you get different conditions from the Wanderers to Cape Town to Paarl and so on."

crazy win by DSG at one point Pc was crushing .

From 154-0 in just 12 over to finish 207-6 in 20 over and they lost by 2 runs

I have watched a bit of BBL. Although commentators may try to make BBL an interesting affair, SA T20 is surprisingly more appealing.

Honestly another so so league , cricket is a dying sport sadly. MI Cape Town who are they serving the Afrikaans sitting at Newlands or the cobblers sitting in Mumbai streets

Disappointing to see that there are no Pakistani players allowed to be selected even in foreign leagues. No wonder Shaheen is forced to play BPL.

He isn't forced to do anything.
Well, if you’ve only got limited league opportunities, you will take what you get. Pakistanis are already banned in the IPL, SA20 and essentially the IL20 with only one team picking Pakistani players. Even in leagues like the CPL, teams are being bought by Indians and the UK leagues also probably have the same future.

So, if our players want to make any money outside of their PCB and PSL contract, they are essentially forced to play in these low-level leagues like the SLPL and BPL because there are no other options.

I have been following this league since the first season. This is just a decent league, foreign players are same just the mercenaries playing all over the world.

Pace bowling is meh and obviously in spin department there are not many good options as well.

Crowd is engaging and atmosphere is good but bbl has more attendance than this league.

I like this league due to great atmosphere and buriyaans LOL.

I'm just talking about the general concept for feeling bad for these guys. At the end of the day, they are still making a fair bit of money no matter where they play.

For the first 2 seasons at least, this was a better league than any of its competitors.

Lol a retired over the hill part time cricketer playing in this league tells you the quality of the league.
Over the hill? He scored 326 runs at an average of 36 with a strike rate of 187 in this edition of IPL. His cameos were the reason why RCB ended up with higher run rate to advance into playoffs.

I watched a game & honestly was disappointed with the quality of the league. Some english bowler was chucking pies at 120+ but then Jansen came and bowled slightly better. It's interesting to see that RSA have a good decent team but their backup options are not very impressive looking.

No wonder that the best two teams in the world are so far ahead of everyone, even their backups at time just feel world class.

Just found out Dinesh Karthik is playing this league.

God he truly is India's Shoaib Malik

Please bhaijaans retire.

MI Cape Town secured their place in the SA20 play-offs with a 10-wicket thrashing of defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

Chasing 108 to win Ryan Rickelton (59 not out off 36 balls) and Rassie van der Dussen (48* off 30) powered them to a 10-wicket win with 54 balls remaining.

It is only the second 10-wicket win in the tournament's three-year history and the fourth-biggest winning margin in terms of balls remaining.

Sunrisers, who have won the first two editions of the tournament, were bowled out for 107 in 19.2 overs.

David Bedingham made 45 at the top of order but only three batters made double figures.

MI Cape Town join Paarl Royals in the play-offs. England's Joe Root has starred for Royals in the group stage but is set to miss the knockouts because of their 50-over tour of India.

Sunrisers are third and likely need to win their final game to have a chance of progressing.

SA20 confirms competition window for next three years

SA20 and Cricket South Africa have taken a significant step into the future after formalising a competition window for South Africa’s premier T20 competition for the next three years.

SA20 season 4 (2025-26) of the league will get underway during South Africa’s peak festive season from December 26 and run through to January 26, 2026, leading up to the ICC T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in February next year.

Season 5 will return to its regular January slot, running from January 9 until February 14, 2027. This will allow for a bigger rest period between matches and less weekday matches. The year 2027 promises to be a bumper one for local cricket fans, with the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup set to be staged in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October and November.

Season 6 will run from January 9 until February 13, 2028.

SA just sacrificed a boxing day and a new year test match.

Boult 9 runs in 4 overs.. what a miss by RR in ipl.. stupid decision to not retain him.. he's even bigger miss than Butler for them..

MI Cape Town (181/8) defeat Sunrisers Eastern Cape (105) by 76 runs to claim their maiden SA20 title

Earlier, the flip of the coin went MI Cape Town’s way, and their innings ebbed and flowed. Ryan Rickelton provided a blazing start before the Sunrisers hit back with three quick wickets. Then came the Dewald Brevis onslaught, and with the way he was striking the ball, Cape Town seemed destined for a much bigger total. However, his dismissal allowed SEC to pull things back, though a couple of late blows from Kagiso Rabada helped MICT finish at 181.

As they say, batters win you games, but bowlers win you tournaments - and that’s exactly how it turned out for Cape Town on the night of the final. Sunrisers were never allowed to break free in the chase. After a sluggish start, Tony de Zorzi showed glimpses of clicking into gear, but the arrival of Rashid Khan sent him packing. Rashid, alongside George Linde, cranked up the pressure, and the required run rate shot up to close to 16, with SEC needing 94 from 36 balls. That’s when Boult was brought back into the attack, and he didn’t disappoint, removing Stubbs. If there was any sliver of hope left for SEC, it was quickly dashed by Rabada, who removed Jansen, effectively sealing the deal.

The redemption arc is complete for MI Cape Town! After finishing at the bottom of the standings in the past couple of seasons, Rashid Khan and his men have risen from the ashes to claim glory. The dominance of the Sunrisers Eastern Cape, who ruled the throne for the first two seasons, has come to an end, and their dreams of a three-peat have been dashed. A new champion is crowned, and MI Cape Town's incredible turnaround is now etched in history!

The Indians have invested millions but it has made little impression on the SA public. Only 13th in the Twitter trends.

Congratulations to Cape Town.

I don't want to call them MI Cape Town. I am calling them Cape Town. :inti
