[VIDEOS] Naseem Shah - A failed experiment?

He should play some Pakistan Cup matches and regain his confidence in domestic cricket. Looks mentally and technically shot.

He's been told by PCB not to play in the Pakistan Cup and instead play in the PSL.

He's been told by PCB not to play in the Pakistan Cup and instead play in the PSL.

And playing PSL will help him learn art of bowling in Tests and ODIs ? Unbelievable from PCB.

haha indeed.

The importance of the golden goose that is PSL strikes again.

But they’ve also said that he’s injured. If he isn’t playing Pakistan Cup, that means there is credibility to the injury and it’s not just an excuse to drop him

I've asked him if he's injured. He said he's100% fit.

I've asked him if he's injured. He said he's100% fit.

Naseem has actually been dropped and this unfit excuse is only for face saving of Misbah n Waqar, as well as to protect him from possibly getting demoralised.
If he plays in the Pakistan Cup, that would expose Waseem's statement as a big fat lie.

Why try to protect Naseem? He deserved to be dropped for being such an awful bowler. I think that was the last we'll see of him for 7-8 years at least.

Can we send Naseem to a county for a couple of seasons please? He has all the ingredients. He just needs to learn a bit about consistency and discipline. He is a little too erratic at this moment in my opinion. Can't waste another good bowler due to mismanagement.

Ultra moronic handling by Pakistan management. The kid shoukdve been at least trialled in A tours abroad before being exposed at test level.

Using tests to experiment with talent will result in failure more than success.

He is a future superstar who had a few poor matches. Not a failed experiment.

The concern for me isn't just his pace dramatically falling, but his lack of confidence now.

He looks shot.

In fact he shouldn't be playing any internationals for the foreseeable future. He needs to play club cricket and gain some of what he had at the start of his young career.

I do feel for him tbh. He's been thrown in at the deep end, with no real experience player there to help him manoeuvre international cricket.

Because he's been told by PCB that he cannot/shouldn't play in the tournament.

they can't stop him if he is fit. If they are stopping his development then he should move to another country which will develop him.

Wow, what a shady management this is. They're asking him to not play the List A cup to cover up the lie that he's unfit. Not men enough to admit that he was selected prematurely and then regressed under the coaching of Waqar the incompetent. They may have ruined his career for good.

I hope he somehow finds a county contract and gets mentored by people who know what they're doing.

Its proberly becouse wasim said hes injuired and if he he did play people will start questioning what wasim said

Shoaib Akhtar averaged 40 with a strike rate of 70 after his first 13 Tests. Not to say Naseem is Shoaib but that it is far too soon to write Naseem off. The important thing now is to get him training with the right coaches so his technical faults can be sorted. Pakistan’s pace bowling stocks aren’t in a state where one can turn away a kid who can bowl 145+ and get movement off the pitch.

When did he last hit 145+?

Before his runup and action was modified and he was told to focus on line and length.

I know, it is one of the toughest jobs in cricket to modify a bowler's action. To be tried only if absolutely necessary. Requires sugical precision as the risk factor is just too high. Bowler's action is a part of his muscle memory, tinkering with that can be career threatening. Any idea why his action was remodelled?

As Saj has said above, Naseem has himself confirmed that neither his action, nor his run-up, was modified by anyone and he was NOT asked to focus on line and length. People are just making up excuses

Watch his bowling videos in his debut series against Australia and the recent series against New Zealand and then tell me his action and run up haven’t been adjusted. It seems pretty clear to me. Somethings obviously not right when a kid loses 10kph of pace in a year with no major injuries.

I believe Saj bhai also said something doesn’t look right to him as well.

Who is mentoring these kids? Aren’t there any local coaches who can enhance/correct their actions off-season?

Our fans will overhype mediocre players and then act surprised and blame everything in the firing line when the mediocre players do not deliver.

Naseem is a rubbish bowler with no talent and no skills. He has been humiliated in Australia, England and New Zealand. End of story.

He is just a nothing bowler with no ability and a big mouth.

It is not entirely his fault - he was overhyped as the ‘next big thing’ or ‘the second coming of Akram or Imran Khan’ & probably that went to his head. If the NZ tour has not already done so, hopefully somebody brings him down to earth & helps him to correct his action. He is a young guy & has some talent which can still be harnessed, hopefully he is mentored the right way by PCB.

We're getting overboard with 'mentoring'. Naseem is not a baby. He was selected hastily yes, but that was also his opportunity to grab with both hands which he hasn't done.

As much as I dislike the management of Misbah and Waqar, they're not on the field fielding and bowling. An average cricketer can also punch above his weight and show glimpses of any xfactor or scope. Naseem, under bowling friendly conditions has dissappinted. He may, or may not come good in the longer run hut for now he's lost his opportunity.

If Hassan Ali is fit and still interested in playing cricket (a big if) , he is our second best bowler after Shaheen.

Fans have to relax and stop with the criticism and abuse. Yes people have every right to be frustrated with Naseem and he has now rightfully been dropped. Whatever happens to him and his career at this point is up to him

Ishant Sharma after a good start was ordinary for so long but under Bharat Arun and Kohlis captaincy, the guy is averaging 22 in the last 5 years. Some players mature peak later on in their careers as they understand their games better

This passage will be crucial for Naseem and say a lot about his temperament. He will always be on the selection radar, is still young and we should expect him to put the hard yards in the domestic circuit.

Exactly the same fits in for Misbah as well.
With No experience and education/ training for top level coaching he has been thrown in deep end.

There is clear lacking of critical thinking, methods processes and systems in Pakistani culture. It's all based on winds and whims especially with regards to selection of players and coaching Panels.
Hopefully with Waseem khan coming in there will be dent in these cultural issues and we can see already some thought process for selection.

My concern is as soon as WK leaves PCB will revert to bad habits as our society inherently resists change and protect the old same

This is a great point. This is missing not just from Naseem, all our bowlers over the last 10 years have lacked that ambition. The only two exceptions are probably Hassan and Shaheen. The problem is, both Hassan and Shaheen lack some critical elements that make their ceiling quite low. Shaheen has a short bowler’s style in a tall man’s body. He doesn’t utilise his greatest asset - height. He should have been unplayable like Jamieson in NZ. For someone of his height, he gets very sad underwhelming bounce. Hassan is good when he’s bowling sharpish and has movement, but if he’s not fully fit and not getting any movement he’s another 80mph trundler.

I’m a pace fanatic, but Naseem has become so meek now I don’t even want a bowler like him in the team anymore. This was the same case with Sami. These guys allow their minds to be scrambled.

Clear difference between those two and shoaib who had supreme confidence in his ability, and knew exactly what type of bowler he was, and what type of bowler he wanted to be.

Who is mentoring these kids? Aren’t there any local coaches who can enhance/correct their actions off-season?

When they become international players it seems that the PCB takes control of when they will play and who will coach them - which isn't always best for the player.

yess exactly we can't waste him

yes we can't miss another good one due to our liabilities

Yes, but a proper plan needs to be put into place regarding his next 2 years as they will be crucial.

A proper plan in terms of which domestic tournaments he plays, the number of matches, his training, fitness plans, work with NHPC coaches etc

I don't think this is fair.

Naseem Shah is not 17, but he is probably 19 years old.

It's incredibly rare for a bowler to be the finished article at that age. Waqar Younis supposedly was - but in reality he was about 23 when he went from having previously has Naseem-like figures in Australia to genuinely breaking through at international level.

A fast bowler who has significant flaws can often conceal them if he is very tall. Shaheen Shah Afridi is an example of this.

Naseem Shah is what he is. He has a lovely action, but he is at the absolute rock bottom minimum height for a successful Test career. His short height will mean that he is always at risk of getting battered.

If you want to bed in a very very young pace bowler on SENA tours, you really need him as part of a 4 man pace attack so that if he gets attacked you can protect him. But Misbah ended up extraordinarily reliant upon Naseem Shah because his leg-spinner was bowling 1 maiden every 10 overs and because his fast-medium metronome had become a military medium boredom machine.

I haven't seen Naseem Shah have a big mouth. I have seen a young kid promoted too soon because Misbah refused to negotiate with Mohammad Amir.

Naseem will never make it. He is not good enough. It is up to people to blame Naseem or Misbah or Waqar or whoever is in the firing line.

Lol that's a big call considering he is just 17-19 right now.

Seriously man. This is international cricket most people don't make it. Whether he is 17 or 21, the guy has decent raw ingredients. He may or may not make it but for you to say that he definitively will not is a little far fetched and borderline ignorant. In fact you are not too far off from the absolutist Pakistani fans that you mock. Basically you are the inverse of them. Both lack any analytical sense

I have seen what I needed to see, and I don’t see any ingredients. Feel free to call me out if he makes it in the future. I personally don’t see it happening.

They kept playing him when they needed to take a step back and now his confidence is shot to pieces. I suspect he'll disappear for a bit.

What have you seen. Please limit it to technical and skill deficiencies that can not be overcome. Saying things like he has a poor attitude is pointless.

No seam, no swing, 138 kph straight balls in NZ, he was bound to fail.

Either he needs to add 12 kph to his speed or learn the art of swing and seam.

He has no skill, no talent, no mentality. That is a lot to overcome. He has nothing going for him.

He is just another Mohammad Talha type bowler, who was always hyped as a lethal fast bowler before getting exposed in international cricket.

Naseem’s hype is fake. If PCB didn’t promote him as a 16 year old, he wouldn’t be hyped by the fans.

No surprise the focus of Gul's coaching so far with Naseem has been regarding Yorkers.

Naseem's return to competitive cricket after being dropped from the international side comes today - he's part of Quetta's XI vs the reigning champions. Let's see if this break has done him any good.

His stock has fallen badly. He is going the Mohd Sami route. I am surprised Quetta picked him given that he hasn't shown good form for ages. Nasim looks ineffective with this shortened run up.

Looks confused and down on confidence.
A huge change from what we saw from him in last year's PSL where he thought he could take a wicket every ball.
It can happen when everyone is trying to advise a young guy about his action and how to bowl.

It is all a learning process for him right now.

It will take a good couple of years until he understands what works for him.

Talk about jumping the gun.
There are 10 different kinds of things going on in his head right now.
He isn't clear headed or trusting himself at the moment.
Give him time.

He shouldn't have been picked without showing form. He needs a few seasons in domestic cricket to understand his bowling better. Jimmy Anderson had to be dropped due to bad form and made to toil in county cricket before being recalled back 2-3 years later

More reason why he should not have been picked by QG

He has been dropped from the national team. That is good enough for now.
He has enough pedigree to play the PSL even in this undercooked state.

His pace was okay but beyond that the line / length was inconsistent, does seem like overcoaching hasn't helped. Hopefully he finds more success deeper in the tournament

Run-up looked shorter and stuttery and jerky.

Certainly didn't look comfortable running in.

When I first saw him what impressed me the most was his accuracy around that corridor of uncertainty with pace. Somehow, with his run up or other adjustments his accuracy is just not there anymore. Needs to soon find the necessary rhythm with his new bowling mechanics.

He was rushed into international cricket too early. He should play first class cricket for another two or three years to improve his game.He needs afew sessions with a good bowling coach preferably from England or Australia.

He's very young. He should be given two years to get better and then be picked for internationals. A good talent.

Based on your logic, he would still have to go through the pains of international cricket and it would just be 2 years later. Domestic cricket doesnt iron out problems. They picked and he didnt come off but all is not lost. If he is good enough he will come back.

After sitting out the last 2 games, Naseem Shah is back in the side for Quetta at the expense of Shinwari.

Didn't have a good showing in the first game of PSL 6 he played, let's hope this break has done him some good

He isnt concentrating on where the ball goes right now, but rather on his bowling action, which has been tinkered with a number of times now in the last 3 years.

Such a stage comes in most fast bowlers' lives and is extremely tough especially when there is so much spotlight on you.

He needs time away from the spotlight to just bowl and understand his action.

The clueless bunch will be busy calling him names, but they dont matter.
Let their song and dance continue because this guy has enough ability and character to prove them wrong. InshaAllah!

I actually felt he looked in better rhythm today. He bowled 3 deliveries at 147 km/hr plus and was rushing the batsmen, unfortunately he went for runs. What he needs is to bowl in domestic cricket with his new run up, get loads of wickets and confidence before being in the spotlight.

He's 20, bro. There's nothing to worry about. He's gonna learn so much about himself.

Pace isn't always a great yardstick. He has the natural talent to bowl fast and can at times manage it even when things are not going smoothly.

It is rather the command on execution, which he still lacks.
A glance at his spells from last year's PSL will tell you that.
The fizz from the backspin; which comes from control over release, and the command over length are still not there.
He is not used to this and the weak body language is because of that.

I dont really understand what they are making him do now.
Why reduce the runup when it wasn't that long or overstriding anyway?

He was a mixed action bowler with front on upper half and side on lower half in 2018.

They changed it to fully side on and now from what I am hearing from Cork in the commentary box; they are changing his lower half to more "midcrease" or should we say straighter left leg placement.

Cork was saying these changes will reduce the stress on his calf and lower back. He has had a stress fracture and his bowling action does look demanding but i wonder if his run up was the issue?

He is still very young and learning. Give him the opportunity to grow and develop. Your comments are always off the mark and offensive. Grow up and learn a little about the essence of cricket!

Getting a bowling action tinkered the right way is always tricky, but the run up definitely didn't warrant a change.

They are toying with him and probably will ruin him , its better if they send him to Aus for one year and let him Grade II cricket for a season ,its the only way he can become good.

Thing is, should we worry about stress and injuries in young players enough to change their actions and bowling?

Cummins had the exact same issue. He had 2 heel injuries, side strain and then two stress fractures of his back. These injuries kept him out for years. Yet they ever changed his avtion or run up and today he is arguably the best bowler in the world

It isnt clear.
Waqar is the coach right now. Zahid has left. He was working with Mohsin Kamal recently, but most of these changes were seen on the England tour.

I see the changes. His action was quite a weird one. He lands like a side-on bowler but that front leg kicked out way too far out and by the time it landed, he was in a front-on position hence the mixed action.

All they have to do is shorten the front stride and get him to land faster and drive through the crease with his upper-body where most of his snap comes from anyway.

I watched one over of the recent game. It was a mixed bag. He got the ball to shape away as well so good to see he hasn't lost that.

Cummins action was a mess when he first started. They've made quite a lot of adjustments. Nowadays, he bowls well within himself and focuses on accuracy over pace.
