[VIDEOS] Nawaz Sharif homecoming - the prodigal son returns

As they have sidelined Imran Khan, now PPP and PML(N) are trying to show people as if they are rivals, and as if people have forgotten what PDM was.

Nawaz Sharif – who has served as prime minister thrice – on Thursday said Pakistan would have progressed and much better placed at a rapid speed, if the policies initiated by his government in 1990s were implemented without any interruption.

Addressing a gathering at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry, he recalled that India had copied the policies introduced in 1990s – the first of his three tenures – and attained economic growth.

The then PML-N government helped businesses get rid of the vicious bureaucratic circles, Nawaz said about the trade liberalisation he had brought in Pakistan, which, he added, boosted the country’s national exchequer.

Other countries of the world too passed through the same phases, he noted with reference to the transition from a planned government-controlled economy to free market where the people have freedom to invest according to the needs and profitability while generating competition.

“We understand the economic hardships being faced by Pakistan,” he said, adding that rescuing the people from the current record-breaking inflation and poverty was their responsibility.

“It is their right if the people demand development, [if they] demand education and health. The government is responsible for providing these services,” the three-time prime minister stressed.

EXILED OVER DEVELOPMENT

Nawaz recalled that the PML-N was not ready to form a government in 2022, but saving Pakistan from default became a priority.

The resignation speech by Shehbaz Sharif, who was leading the ruling coalition, had been prepared, which checked himself, he told the audience – a development that didn’t happen but widely reported at that time.

“We develop the country, [and] then face exile and imprisonment too,” Nawaz said about his repeated experience.

He noted, “We had committed injustices against our parliament and prime minister ourselves” and “then handed over the country to someone else” – a clear reference to those who deposed him and brought the PTI chairman into power.

The rupee, the economy, the entire system had been ruined as a consequence, which resulted in a fivefold increase in prices, he mentioned. The electricity consumer receiving a Rs1,000 monthly bill during the PML-N government was currently getting Rs15,000, the PML-N supremo added.

STRONG RUPEE

Nawaz said Pakistan jumped in ranking and was placed 24th among the world’s economies during 2013-17. “We kept the dollar [exchange rate] at Rs104 for four years,” he said and added that the dollar would have been available for Rs40 or Rs50 if his government policies were not interrupted.

About the nuclear tests conducted in 1998, he said the Muslim nations had started trusting Pakistan as their custodian after he resisted the pressure and decided to go ahead the move, but the things went wrong since then and the country was begging for $1 billion.

The current state of affairs was a product of “the poor decisions that we took ourselves”, as “we shot ourselves in the foot”, he remarked.

Nawaz also mentioned that the policy [interest] rate during his government was 6 per cent only, which had reached 22pc. “Who can do business with such a high policy [interest rate]?” he questioned.

‘Shehbaz was ready for polls after Imran’s ouster’

LAHORE: PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif said on Thursday former prime minister Shehbaz Sharif was ready to dissolve the coalition government to go into polls following the ouster of PTI chief Imran Khan in a no-trust vote in April 2022, but claimed the decision was changed at the eleventh hour because “we did not want to give in” to purported threats.

“Shehbaz Sharif was all set to resign and he had prepared his farewell speech as well. But we refused to give in before threats,” the elder Sharif said during his visit to the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI).

Nawaz Sharif was talking about the ‘difficult decision’ to form the Shehbaz-led PDM government in April 2022 following the ouster of Imran Khan.

It seems Nawaz Sharif was referring to the ‘threats’ of a long march in May 2022 by Imran Khan. Besides, there were also reports that former army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa had also advised the PDM to go into elections after removing Mr Khan from power.

“We were not ready to come to power in 2022. …We then decided to move forward without any fear for the interest of Pakistan. We had to save the country from default,” he said and added that “we worked for the progress of the country but faced imprisonment and exile”.

It seems like Nawaz Sharif is trying to justify the decision of his brother Shehbaz Sharif to form a coalition government with the opposition parties after Imran Khan was voted out of power in 2022. His claims, that they have faced threats from Imran Khan and the establishment, and that they had to save the country from economic crisis, are somewhat hard to digest.

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Sindh president Saeed Ghani, has declared PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif a new darling.

Speaking to the media while visiting the People’s Lawyers Forum membership camp in the city court Karachi, he claimed that Nawaz Sharif is the new darling and inquired who had previously made him prime minister.

According to Saeed Ghani, it is disappointing that people are beginning to believe that Mian Sahib will be the next prime minister.

He said that everyone should have equal opportunities, including PTI and transparent elections are necessary for the nation’s better future.

The PPP leader said that all political parties should decide that they will not contest the elections under anyone’s shadow.

He said that I think the situation in the city is comparatively better today, no one used to talk in front of the MQM’s terror even media offices were attacked.

Saeed Ghani said that PPP is the largest party in Karachi and is always targeted by political opponents, in this city they consider us as their biggest rival but we need to do more.

Islamabad court orders NAB to record Nawaz’s statement in Toshakhana case

An Islamabad accountability court on Monday ordered the National Accountability Court to PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif to record his statement in the Toshakhana case.

The NAB was given until Nov 30 to record the former premier’s statement.

The case alleges that Nawaz, former president Asif Ali Zardari and ex-prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani received luxury vehicles and gifts from the Toshakhana — a government repository that stores gifts given to rulers, parliamentarians, bureaucrats and officials by heads of other governments, states, and foreign dignitaries.

In June 2020, an accountability court issued non-bailable arrest warrants for the former premier. Months later, Nawaz challenged the warrants in the Islamabad High Court but had withdrawn the petition days later.

On Sept 10, 2020, he was declared a proclaimed offender in the case, with an accountability court initiating the process to confiscate his properties and directing the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to make his arrest through Interpol.

Last month, just two days before his return to Pakistan, the court suspended Nawaz’s perpetual arrest warrants.

At the previous hearing, the court had confirmed the PML-N supremo’s bail in the case.

Today, pleader Rana Irfan and Nawaz’s lawyer Qazi Misbah appeared in court.

At the outset, Advocate Misbah urged the court to issue directions to the National Accountability Bureau on recording Nawaz’s statement.

“A supplementary reference needs to be filed … a reference was filed in the absence of Nawaz,” he said, adding that “we want the NAB to record Nawaz’s position”.

Here, the NAB prosecutor sought time to go through the petition. However, Judge Muhammad Bashir said: “What is the problem? Call Nawaz Sharif and record his statement.”

In his response, the prosecutor said only the investigating officer could record the statement. At that, Advocate Misbah asked the former for the questionnaire. “We will give the answers,” Nawaz’s lawyer added.

The NAB prosecutor then said there were no objections to the PML-N supremo recording his statement before the IO.

The hearing was then adjourned till Nov 30.

Unfortunately, we have been seeing for decades now that many of our politicians get convicted when they're in opposition but when they come into government, they get clearance in most of the cases. Not sure, what would be the end result of this case?

IHC to begin hearing arguments on Nawaz’s appeals in Al-Azizia, Avenfield references from Nov 27

The Islamabad High Court on Tuesday said it would begin hearing arguments on PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif’s appeals against his conviction in the Avenfield Apartments and Al-Azizia references from November 27 (Monday).

The decision was taken by an IHC division bench comprising Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb.

In July 2018, and as the then prime minister, Nawaz was handed 10 years in jail in the Avenfield properties corruption reference for owning assets beyond known income and one year for not cooperating with the National Accountability Bureau, both of which were to be served concurrently.

The Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption reference pertains to the case in which he was sentenced to seven years in jail on Dec 24, 2018. He was also fined Rs1.5 billion and US$25 million.

Nawaz was released from jail in March 2019, following which he left for London in November 2019 after the LHC allowed him to do so on medical grounds. The IHC had declared him a proclaimed offender in both cases in December 2020.

Nawaz then remained in London for nearly four years and only returned to the country last month. After his return from the UK, the PML-N leader had filed two separate applications for restoration of appeals against his conviction in the Avenfield Apartments and Al-Azizia references.

He had contended that while he was abroad for medical treatment, the pending appeals were dismissed for non-prosecution. The applications requested the court to revive the pending appeals for a decision on them on merit.

Last month, the court had restored the appeals.

Ahead of the hearing today, Nawaz arrived in court amid tight security. He was accompanied by brother Shehbaz Sharif and an entourage comprising senior PML-N leaders, including Khawaja Asif, Ahsan Iqbal, Ishaq Dar, Ayaz Sadiq and others.

As the proceedings commenced, Azam Nazir Tarar, Nawaz’s lawyer, said his client wanted to present arguments on the appeal against conviction in the Avenfield reference today.

How much time would you need to present the arguments, Justice Farooq asked, to which Tarar replied he would need four to six hours.

The judge also asked the NAB prosecutor the same question. In his response, the latter said he would need approximately half an hour. “Does this mean that NAB doesn’t want to say anything?” Justice Farooq asked.

The IHC CJ then stated that the court would begin hearing Nawaz’s arguments on Monday (Nov 27), 12:30pm.

Here, Tarar urged the bench to hear the appeals on a daily basis as the cases dated back to 2018 and 2019. He further promised that he would not waste the court’s time.

“If need be, we will hear the case on a daily basis,” Justice Farooq said, adding that regular division bench proceedings will be called off on the day of the hearing.

The judge also directed Advocate Amjaz Parvez to present arguments on Nawaz’s behalf and instructed him to prepare a summary of the case.

The hearing was subsequently adjourned till Monday.

Old allies tout fresh seat adjustment

ISLAMABAD: As the political arena heats up in the lead-up to elections, JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman after a meeting with PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday announced that both parties have reached a seat adjustment agreement in a bid to cement their relations.

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif called on JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman at his residence in Islamabad after making an appearance at the Islamabad High Court in connection with corruption proceedings against him.

There was no statement from the PML-N regarding the meeting between the two, but JUI-F chief Maulana Fazl said both parties have reached an agreement to contest elections together.

Maulana Fazl told reporters that JUI-F and PML-N have decided to “walk together in future” as well.

He said previously both parties had put up a joint front against the PTI led by Imran Khan. “There will be seat adjustments with PML-N and the rules of the game should be fair and equal for all the parties,” he added.

While calling himself and the PML-N leadership ‘mature politicians’, the Maulana said: “We will not make the upcoming election controversial; we will move forward together with the PML-N.”

Though he did not mention if the seat adjustment would be localised or across the country, Rana Sanaullah, who heads the PML-N’s Punjab chapter, told reporters in Lahore that the party was in talks with the JUI-F for seat adjustment in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

He said the PML-N would also woo electables in south Punjab to strengthen its presence. According to Mr Sanaullah, the PML-N had won 34 National Assembly seats out of 46 in south Punjab in 2013 polls, and in the upcoming polls, the party was eyeing up to 40.

However, PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui said it was premature to say both sides had agreed to seat adjustments. “Mian Sahib recently returned to the country and wants to meet all allies of the past and even those which were not part of any alliance,” he said in a comment on the meeting. “We had good ties with JUI-F in the past and we want to cement them,” he said.

Since both parties face criticism from the PPP, Maulana Fazl and Rana Sanaullah said they would not pay the PPP chairperson in the same coin, with the latter saying it would lead to bitterness between the two parties.

“…Bilawal should not target the PML-N as he remained with it in the PDM government,” he said and added that the PDM was not an election alliance. Maulana Fazl said, “We will not adopt an extremist attitude against the Pakistan Peoples Party.”

These unnatural alliances won't work as they never did in the past as well. It is not for the benefit for the country rather than it is just for their own personal gains.

Nawaz denies ambition for fourth term, rejects 'greed' for power

In a speech delivered at the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) workers' convention in Murree, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif asserted on Thursday that his political pursuits were not fueled by personal ambitions to reclaim power for a fourth term, Express News reported.

The PML-N supremo, a three-time former prime minister, conveyed his sincere desire to witness a positive transformation in the destiny of Pakistan. He explicitly stated his commitment to avoiding misleading tactics in achieving his political objectives.

Describing Murree as his "second home," the former prime minister underscored the necessity of developing the region. He commended the scenic beauty of Murree and advocated for focused efforts on its growth, particularly highlighting the construction of a picturesque road from Islamabad to Murree.

During his address, Sharif highlighted significant achievements from his tenure, including the addition of 11,000 MW of power to the national grid and the successful eradication of power outages through diligent efforts. He specifically pointed out the initiation of coal-based electricity production in Sindh, emphasising the veracity of his political statements.

"I don't lie for politics. We initiated coal-based electricity production in Sindh, completing projects left incomplete for 20 years." He highlighted the utilisation of coal mines in Sindh for power generation.

Boasting about economic accomplishments, Sharif credited himself with rescuing Pakistan from default and transitioning the country from the Financial Action Task Force's (FATF) grey list to the white list. He also mentioned successfully concluding negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and emphasised that the country did not seek financial assistance from any other nation during his regime.

Warning against deceiving the nation for political gains, Sharif stressed that divine accountability awaits those who mislead. He emphasised the importance of thoughtful and truthful communication during electioneering, underlining the obligation to fulfill promises made during elections.

The former prime minister also reminisced about diplomatic achievements during his tenure, recalling the visits of two former Indian prime ministers to Pakistan. He referred to the visits of Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1999 and incumbent Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's surprise visit in December 2015.

Additionally, Sharif mentioned rejecting a $5 billion offer from the United States in 1998, seeking Pakistan to refrain from conducting nuclear tests.

We shall all see, what will happen after the general elections. If PML(N) wins, it is likely that he would be the prime minister.

PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif on Saturday said the PTI chairman didn’t come into power on his own as he was promoted to the office, adding that those behind imposing him on Pakistan were equally responsible for the current state of affairs.

Why RTS was shut down and election results manipulated in 2018, the three-time prime minister questioned and noted that the whole exercise was designed to place a person into power who knew nothing but abusive language.

Nawaz said they were neither defeated in 1993 and 1999 nor in 2017 – the years when his tenures ended prematurely – and noted that his governments had always been toppled without any reason.

Addressing a PML-N workers’ convention, he questioned how a country could be managed when the prime ministers were removed arbitrarily. Pakistan would have been much better placed if his governments weren’t toppled and continuity of policies had been ensured, he said.

Nawaz listed the positives of his 2013-17 tenure when, he said, the country was moving forward with a lot of job opportunities and low rate of inflation as well as a substantial increase in the tax-to-GDP ratio, and remarked that it wasn’t just removal of his government; in fact, the entire country had been derailed.

A prime minister elected by millions of people was kicked out of the office by five persons, he said about the five-member bench which sentenced and disqualified him in the Panama Papers case.

“We cannot afford repeating the mistakes again and again,” the PML-N supremo said. “We have experienced injustices but have never and would never work against the country’s interests.”

In his speech, PML-N senior leader Khawaja Asif said Nawaz would be elected prime minister for a fourth term on Feb 8, adding that those trying to remove the three-time prime minister from politics had vanished.

Not a single MNA of Nawaz’s party switched his or her loyalty despite all the hardships and political victimisation they had to face, he said and mentioned that there was a long queue of individuals requesting forgiveness over their past actions.

We all know the RTS was shutdown so that likes of Khawaja Asif, Rana Qatil won their seats. Infact IK lost 20 seats because of the connivance of Bajwa and ECP to create a weak govt. I dont often agree with @Mamoon but he pointed this out at the time

Nawaz resurrects 'Mujhe Kyun Nikala' narrative

Former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif, on Saturday, reiterated his "Mujhe Kyun Nikala" (why was I ousted?) narrative that he previously used at public gatherings after being removed as prime minister in 2017.

He questioned the panel of five judges, suggesting that by removing him in the Panama case, they achieved nothing substantial but to install a person, referring to PTI Chairman Imran Khan, who, according to Sharif, lacked political finesse and often resorted to below the belt verbal attacks against his political adversaries.

Addressing businessmen and industrialists at two separate events in Sialkot, the three-time prime minister criticised what he perceived as his unjust removal by a panel of five judges in the Panama case. He contended that they turned a blind eye to the repercussions of ousting him.

Speaking at the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Sharif asserted that those responsible for installing Imran Khan as the prime minister bear equal responsibility for the country's perceived damages.

He questioned the capability and accountability of those entrusted with such responsibilities, especially in a scenario where prime ministers change frequently, and cases and punishments are allegedly fabricated.

The former prime minister emphasised that political stability is crucial for achieving lasting stability in the country, steering it away from political misadventures.

Sharif recounted spending a total of 14 months behind bars in what he described as a "concocted hijacking case," facing a potential death penalty from a Karachi court in the year 2000.

Recalling the events of October 12, 1999, when his government was removed in a coup led by the former military dictator General (retd) Pervez Musharraf, the PML-N supremo regretted the swift transition from being the "prime minister in the morning to a hijacker by evening."

He lamented the impact of political misadventures on Pakistan's economic prospects and stressed the necessity of stability and adherence to the Constitution.

While boasting his party's role in the country's economic progress, Sharif expressed remorse for handing over Pakistan to a leader, presumably referring to PTI chief Imran Khan, who employed abusive language and threats against opponents, allegedly contributing to the erosion of the moral fabric of society.

He recounted the tumultuous events of 2014 triggered by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s prolonged sit-in against his government, expressing regret over announcements made to forcibly remove the prime minister from the PM house. Sharif characterised this style of politics as new and unfathomable to him.

Lamenting the current economic conditions of Pakistan, Sharif remarked that a person earning Rs50,000 could not cover daily expenditures. He claimed credit for ending terrorism and initiating the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), highlighting achievements during his party's governance, including a growth rate of 5.8% alongside healthy reserves.

Noting positive outlooks predicted by international financial institutions during his tenure, Sharif contended that Pakistan was on the path to becoming a developed nation. However, he argued that after his ouster, the PML-N government from 2017 to 2018 existed only on paper, alleging destabilisation started immediately after his removal in 2017.

Proudly acknowledging his role in making Pakistan a nuclear state, the PML-N supremo asserted that the country had become invincible during their tenure. He cited positive developments in foreign relations, including visits by Indian prime ministers, but expressed dissatisfaction with the subsequent PTI government, which, according to him, had adversely affected Pakistani society, morality, and the economy.

Sharif insisted that continuity was crucial for Pakistan's success and lamented the reversal of the policies he initiated that helped improve the economy in 2017.

Reflecting on the state of Pakistan during his prime ministership, he nostalgically recalled that the nation was beautiful and valuable at that time.

Pledging to restore the country to prosperity, Sharif vowed not to allow individuals he deemed unfit to govern, asserting that despite facing injustices, those who truly cared for Pakistan's interests would ultimately prevail.

The counsel for PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif on Monday informed the Islamabad High Court (IHC) that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had no option except to file references against PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif.

The statement by the counsel, Amjad Pervaiz, came during the hearing of Nawaz's appeals against his convictions in the Avenfield Apartments and Al-Azizia corruption cases.

The division bench is presided over by Chief Justice Aamer Farooq today along with Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb.

It was further stated that the accountability court had been given a period of six months to pass judgment on the reference. The aforementioned cases were filed by NAB on the order of the Supreme Court.

Pervaiz argued that the Panama Papers Joint Investigation Team (JIT) was formed by the SC and that the JIT submitted their report to the apex court on July 10, 2017. He further stated that on July 28, then-premier Nawaz Sharif was disqualified and the SC ordered NAB to file a reference within six weeks of its verdict.

He further stated that a reference of Avenfield Apartments was filed against Nawaz, Maryam Nawaz, Hussain Nawaz, Hasan Nawaz and retired Captain Safdar, and in the light of the verdict by the SC, Al Azizia Steel Mills reference was subsequently filed against Nawaz, Hussain and Hasan Nawaz.

Pervaiz also reminded the court that NAB had filed an appeal to have Nawaz’s sentence in the Al Azizia case increased.

On July 28, 2017, Nawaz was disqualified by the Supreme Court for hiding the salary that he was entitled to as a director, while bearing the office of the prime minister, at one of his sons' companies. These details were mentioned in his nomination papers which he submitted ahead of the 2013 general elections.

He was later also convicted in the Al Azizia Steel Mills corruption case on December 24, 2018. Following the judgment of an accountability court, the former prime minister was awarded seven years in jail with Rs1.5 billion and US $25 million. Back then, NAB had filed an appeal to have Nawaz’s sentence increased.

Al-Azizia reference

The Al Azizia reference pertains to the Nawaz being unable to justify the source of funds provided to set up Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metal Establishment (HME) in Saudi Arabia which turned the reference into assets beyond means case.

The court ordered to forfeit the properties, assets, rights, receivables and interests of both investments to the federal government of Pakistan “which shall forthwith approach the Government of KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), so as to implement and give effect to the said forfeiture”.

Avenfield Apartments reference

Similarly, on July 6, 2017, the PML-N leader was awarded 10 years in jail in the Avenfield properties corruption reference for owning assets beyond means. The case pertains to the ownership of four flats in Avenfield House, Park Lane, London through illegitimate sources of income.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday adjourned the appeals of former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif against his convictions in the Avenfield Apartments and Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption cases till Wednesday.

In 2018, Sharif was sentenced to 10 years in jail in the Avenfield properties reference for owning assets beyond known income and one year for not cooperating with the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). He was also sentenced to seven years in jail in the Al-Azizia case.

The IHC declared Sharif a proclaimed offender in both cases in December 2020 after he left for London on medical grounds. He returned to Pakistan last month.

In July 2021, Sharif filed applications seeking the restoration of his appeals against his conviction in both cases. The IHC restored the appeals in November 2021.

Hearing

The hearing took place at the IHC by a two-member bench headed by Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb.

At the commencement of the hearing, Nawaz's lawyer, Amjad Pervaiz, presented his arguments before the court.

Responding to the court's inquiry about the origin of the presented facts, Pervaiz clarified that three facts predated the reference filing, while the rest were subsequent.

Drawing upon the Supreme Court's (SC) ruling in the Panama Papers case, which led to Nawaz's disqualification, Pervaiz reminded the court of the establishment of a joint investigation team (JIT) in response to the verdict.

Justice Aurangzeb questioned the relevance of Pervaiz's arguments. In response, the counsel provided the court with details about the JIT's formation and members.

He informed the IHC that the JIT submitted a comprehensive 12-volume report to the apex court in July 2017.

Following the presentations of the involved parties, the court issued its final verdict on July 28, 2017, disqualifying Nawaz.

Justice Aurangzeb sought clarity from Pervaiz regarding the specific orders issued by the SC. He inquired whether the SC had provided directives to the NAB chairman.

Pervaiz affirmed that the apex court had issued explicit instructions to NAB to file references against Nawaz Sharif.

He specified that the SC had ordered references against Nawaz, his daughter Maryam, sons Husain and Hasan, and Captain (rtd) Safdar in the Avenfield case, while the Al-Azizia and Flagship references were to be filed against Nawaz and his two sons.

The lawyer emphasized that according to the apex court's orders, NAB was authorized to file supplementary references based on newly discovered evidence.

Justice Aurangzeb delved into the events between the SC's order and NAB's filing of the references. He inquired whether all three references were filed on the same day, to which Pervaiz confirmed, adding that the filing occurred in September 2017.

The IHC judge further questioned whether the former prime minister was present in the country when the references were filed. Pervaiz clarified that his client was in the United Kingdom along with his daughter.

Justice Farooq sought clarification regarding the indictment of the suspects. He asked whether the indictment was limited to the Avenfield reference or extended to all three cases. Pervaiz explained that the indictment occurred in all three cases on the same day, but the proceedings were handled separately at a later stage.

Pervaiz informed the IHC that the prosecution had withheld a copy of volume 10 of the JIT report. The chief justice expressed his surprise, stating that at least some details from volume 10 should have been presented during the trial.

However, the counsel maintained that no document from volume 10 had been brought on the record, acknowledging that a few questions were answered during the interrogation.

Justice Aurangzeb acknowledged Nawaz's acquittal in one of the references. The NAB prosecutor confirmed that an accountability court had acquitted Nawaz in the Flagship reference.

Justice Aurangzeb inquired whether NAB had filed an appeal against the acquittal. The NAB prosecutor responded affirmatively, but clarified that notices had not yet been issued, and the case was not yet scheduled for a hearing.

Nawaz's lawyer, Amjad Pervaiz, contended that accountability Judge Mohammad Bashir had issued a verdict on one of the references, followed by a plea to transfer the remaining cases to another court.

Justice Aurangzeb commented on the PML-N's request for a simultaneous hearing of all three references. He noted that the judge had swiftly concluded one case while staying proceedings on the other two.

Pervaiz questioned the accountability watchdog's reliance solely on the JIT report for filing references against Nawaz.

Justice Aurangzeb expressed scepticism, asking whether NAB had exercised any independent judgment in the matter.

Pervaiz asserted that NAB's actions were limited to issuing a call-up notice to Nawaz Sharif.

He criticized the bureau for failing to present any "concrete evidence" beyond witness statements. He further argued that the call-up notice had no bearing on the investigation.

Justice Aurangzeb sought confirmation from Pervaiz that NAB had not conducted an independent investigation.

IHC to issue security passes ahead of Nawaz's appearance in graft cases

ISLAMABAD: With former prime minister Nawaz Sharif set to appear before the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia cases, the court's Registrar's Office Tuesday announced that it would issue limited security passes to lawyers and journalists to attend the all-important hearing scheduled to be held on Wednesday (tomorrow).

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo was sentenced to 10 years in the Avenfield reference for owning assets beyond means along with an additional one-year imprisonment for failure to cooperate with the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in July 2018.

Same year in December, he was further handed down a seven-year jail sentence in the Al-Aziza Steel Mills corruption reference.

Nawaz — who left for London in November 2019 for medical treatment following the Lahore High Court's approval — returned to Pakistan on October 21 after a four-year self-imposed exile.

Following his homecoming, the former premier filed two separate applications — contending that while he was abroad for medical treatment and the pending appeals were dismissed for non-prosecution — seeking the restoration of his appeals against his conviction in both references.

On October 26, the IHC restored his appeals in the said cases after the anti-graft watchdog told the court that it had no objections to the pleas filed by Nawaz.

Ahead of Nawaz's appearance before the IHC tomorrow, the court's registrar's office has issued directives for strict security measures at the premises.

"In order to ensure that regular cases are not affected [...] the ICT Administration/DC/DM and IGP Islamabad shall ensure that proper administrative and security arrangements are made to maintain the decorum of the court," read the circular.

Furthermore, Nawaz's lawyers have been asked to provide a list of "not more than 25" counsels for issuance of entry passes.

Meanwhile, the Attorney General's Office and Advocate General Islamabad have been directed to provide the names of one law officer each, whereas five NAB officers will be allowed to attend the case proceeding.

Additionally, a maximum of 15 journalists will also be allowed in the court.

PML-N on Cloud 9 over Nawaz's acquittal

ISLAMABAD/KARACHI: The PML-N on Wednesday broke into jubilation and heaved a sigh of relief after a stunning climax of the five-year case of the Avenfield reference, leaving the country’s political future potentially up for grabs for the party’s supreme leader Nawaz Sharif.

In a major development favouring the former prime minister, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday handed down an acquittal verdict in the case, removing one of the last remaining thorns on his way back to the office.

A sense of festivity coursed through party's ranks as both Maryam Nawaz and Shehbaz Sharif as well as party workers exchanged sweets and chanted victory slogans. Talking to journalists outside the court after the major legal victory, Nawaz Sharif, a three-time prime minister with sights set on a potential fourth term in the upcoming general elections said, "I had entrusted my fate to Allah.

Similarly, in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption reference, I have also placed my matters in Allah's hands."Asked for his reaction to PTI’s decision to pick Barrister Gohar for the post of PTI chairman. Nawaz, after a brief pause, cryptically remarked, "This is the nature of the system.”Nawaz Sharif's journey through the legal wrangle involved a significant period behind bars, encompassing 10 months and 26 days of incarceration spanning both the Avenfield and Al-Azizia Steel Mills references.

The Avenfield trial itself extended across 9 months and 28 days.During the hearings, Nawaz Sharif's presence in court was prominent, attending more than 100 sessions throughout the trial's duration, which witnessed a total of 107 hearings in the accountability court.During the proceedings in the IHC on Wednesday, Nawaz remained seated, attentively observing the court proceedings.

Occasionally engaged in conversation with Ishaq Dar or engrossed in his mobile phone, he maintained a composed demeanour. As the proceedings concluded and the court delivered the verdict, Nawaz stood up amid congratulatory gestures from PML-N leaders and legal counsel. Later, supporters of the PML-N thronged outside the court, chanting slogans while lawyers joined in the fervour.

Meanwhile, Nawaz’s brother and party president Shehbaz Sharif has also expressed gratitude to the judiciary for delivering justice. “Thanks to Allah that we’re seeing this day where my leader, elder brother, party, and family have been exonerated,” he added.Shehbaz said that his brother was innocent and the Almighty today has exonerated him of all charges.

The PML-N president concluded by commending Nawaz Sharif's resilience in the face of political adversaries, saying that even in life's bitterest moments, his leader never lost courage.Nawaz’s daughter and party’s Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz also hailed the court’s decision, praising the triumph as an example of resilience in the face of oppression."When a person entrusts his affairs to Allah despite enduring injustice, how Allah elevates that person in the eyes of the whole world is truly exemplary! Thanks be to Allah!" Maryam wrote on his official X handle.

Women Wing celebrateThe PML-N Women's Wing, represented by former MPA Kanwal Liaquat advocate, expressed immense joy and relief following “the honourable acquittal” of Nawaz Sharif in the Avenfield reference case. The party’s women workers distributed sweets and exchanged congratulatory sentiments among themselves in celebration. They chanted slogans in favour of the party's leadership.Separately, according to insider sources, PML-N’s chief organizer Maryam Nawaz received the news of the acquittal while in Model Town. Maryam, present at a relative's residence, was elated upon learning of the court's decision.

“Reacting to the news, Maryam Nawaz expressed heartfelt gratitude to Allah, immediately offering prayers as an act of thanksgiving, while warm congratulations poured in from near and dear ones to Maryam,” the party sources said."Nawaz Sharif entrusted his case to Allah Almighty, and now Allah has served the fairest justice," Maryam said, emphasising “the validation of Nawaz Sharif's truth and the deceit of those fabricating charges against him”.

Maryam later extended her felicitations to her father via a telephonic conversation.

Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif has recorded his statement in the 2019 Toshakhana reference filed against him, the prosecutor informed an accountability court on Thursday.

The case also involves former president Asif Ali Zardari and former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani. It centers on allegations that the individuals received luxury vehicles from the Toshakhana (gifts repository).

Today's proceedings, presided over by Judge Muhammad Bashir, witnessed the appearance of key figures, including Nawaz Sharif's lawyer Qazi Misbah, Arshad Tabriz, NAB prosecutor Irfan Bhola, and Sohail Arif. Rana Irfan, another lawyer representing Nawaz Sharif, was also present during the hearing.

The prosecutor told the court that the former prime minister had submitted his reply. He said the investigation will now be taken further, for which some time was required.

The defense counsel informed the court that a questionnaire was prepared in 2019 but could not be provided to Nawaz because of his ill health. However, he said corresponding answers to the questions put forth had now been provided.

He added that the reference filed presents no record of the vehicle mentioned to have been returned, or any documentation proving the PML-N supremo had put in a request seeking any vehicle.

The court, faced with the challenges presented, inquired about NAB's course of action. The prosecutor responded that a thorough examination of the statement would precede any subsequent steps.

The court adjourned the hearing of the Toshakhana case, scheduling the next session for December 20.

IHC to hear Nawaz’s appeal next week

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) will take up the appeal of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Quaid Nawaz Sharif against his conviction in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference and the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) appeal for increasing his sentence on Dec 7.

A division bench, headed by Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and comprising Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, would hear both the appeals, according to the cause list issued by the IHC Registrar Office on Friday.

Nawaz was convicted and awarded seven-year imprisonment in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference by an accountability court in 2018. He had challenged his conviction in the IHC. In the meanwhile, NAB also appealed in the IHC, seeking increase in Nawaz’s sentence.

Earlier this week, the IHC accepted Nawaz’s appeal against his conviction in the Avenfield reference.

In its short order, the court also referred to the acquittal of Maryam Nawaz and Capt (retd) Safdar in the same case.

The order said that NAB had no documentary evidence to prove the case against Nawaz, therefore, the appeal of the PML-N supremo against his sentence was allowed and he had been acquitted of all charges.

JUI-F leader Fazl-ur-Rehman will meet former PM Nawaz Sharif today to discuss a joint political strategy, citing sources ARY News reported on Monday.

JUI-F chief Fazl-ur-Rehman will call on Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supreme leader Nawaz Sharif at his Jati Umra residence in Lahore.

In the one-on-meeting two politicians will consider over a formula of seat adjustments between their parties in upcoming general elections, sources said.

Nawaz Sharif and Fazl will also mull over constituting committees for Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.

Nawaz Sharif Monday chaired the PML-N parliamentary board meeting for the general elections 2024, party’s sources said.

He is today conducting interviews of the candidates intending to contest elections from Rawalpindi, Attock and Chakwal districts.

Following his return to home from London, the former prime minister has become active for his party’s election preparations.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has notified general elections on February 8, 2024.

So, these two guys, Fazl-ur-Rehman and Nawaz Sharif, are meeting up to plan stuff for the elections. It adds a bit of drama to their preparations, especially with the election date set for February 8, 2024. Let's see how their strategy unfolds.

In a significant development on Wednesday, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain held a meeting with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supreme leader Nawaz Sharif, discussing seat adjustments between both the parties ahead of the general elections scheduled to be held on February 8, Express News reported.

The meeting, held at Shujaat's residence in Lahore, was the first between the two leaders in 15 years. Current political landscape and mutual cooperation in the upcoming elections were discussed during the meeting.

The meeting, attended by prominent members of both parties, addressed strategic collaboration and seat adjustments during the upcoming polls. Among those present at the meeting were Shahbaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, Rana Sanaullah, Saad Rafique, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Ahsan Iqbal, from the PML-N, while the PML-Q was represented by Salik Hussain, Shafay Hussain, Tariq Bashir Cheema, and Imtiaz Ranjha.

During the discussions, Nawaz and Shujaat emphasised the need for cooperation in the upcoming general elections. According to insiders, PML-Q sought a substantial share of seats from the PML-N in Punjab. They said that Shujaat requested more than 10 National Assembly and 22 Punjab Assembly seats.

Shujaat's proposal for seat adjustments included requests for seats in Gujarat, Sialkot, Mandi Bahauddin, and Hafizabad. He argued that areas where PML-Q candidates were successful in 2018 should be adjusted.

“We supported the no-confidence motion without any fear or greed; now we should be compensated accordingly,” sources quoted Shujaat as saying during the meeting.

Shujaat stressed the importance of not losing votes in Punjab to PTI, PPP or IPP, saying that unity would be beneficial for both PML-N and PML-Q. “Aligning with the PDM had led to differences within our family, but we have no regrets about our decision; we remain satisfied with our choice,” he added.

Sources revealed that Nawaz Sharif expressed gratitude for the PML-Q's support during the vote of no confidence against Imran Khan in April 2022 and subsequent cooperation. Both leaders also reminisced about positive experiences of the past as well.

They disclosed that a joint committee of the PML-N and PML-Q is expected to be formed in the next few days which will present recommendations on all seat adjustment issues to the top leadership of both parties.

IHC to hear Nawaz’s appeal against conviction in Al-Azizia reference on merit

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday decided to hear PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif’s appeal against his conviction in the Al-Azizia reference on merit.

This means that the court will be hearing the actual substance of the case which includes the charge, the defence, the weight of evidence, etc., as opposed to matters of procedure or jurisdiction.

Analysts that Dawn.com spoke to said it effectively means the case was being expedited as the merits stage is the final stage before a decision is made, deeming it an an important development for Nawaz.

The decision was taken by a division bench comprising IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb. The same bench had acquitted the PML-N leader in the Avenfield reference on November 29.

The Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption reference pertains to a case in which he was sentenced to seven years in jail on Dec 24, 2018. He was also fined Rs1.5 billion and US$25 million.

The reference pertains to the Sharifs being unable to justify the source of the funds provided to set up Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metal Establishment (HME) in Saudi Arabia.

Nawaz Sharif and PML N have badly damaged their reputation even among their loyal Lahore, Punjab support base in the last 2 years. These guys will now desperately need all the help they can get from the establishment to win even a rigged election. In a free and fair election they will get smashed. Nawaz is now desperately trying to build bridges with PML Q and other parties in KPK, Balochistan because he knows PML N on their own does not have the same standing anymore.

PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif on Friday said his party does not desire to win elections and form a government but demands accountability.

“The nation should know that those who used to cry ‘thief’ are thieves themselves, the biggest thieves. […] This is our demand,” he said at a PML-N parliamentary board meeting in Lahore.

“Our demand is not to form governments after winning elections and then roam about in big cars,” the former premier stressed, saying that while the PML-N was determined to serve the country, it also wanted the truth to be brought in front of the public.

“Who ruined the country? Who brought the country to this point today? Why are the poor starving today? […] All these things are eating up the country. There should be accountability.

“We are not sitting here to get into government, we want the well-being of the country and the 250 million people living here,” Nawaz asserted.

“Pakistan is going through a tough time today and we have created these difficulties ourselves. We punished the people who wanted to serve the country and brought forth those who were playing an evil game,” he claimed in an apparent reference to ex-premier Imran Khan.

The PML-N leader, without taking any names, said a person was brought to power who knew nothing about politics, economy or foreign policy. “He only talked about ‘Riyasat-i-Madina’ but didn’t know anything about ‘Riyasat-i-Madina’ in the true sense,” he said.

Nawaz went on to say that the “biggest corruption scandal in the history of Pakistan” was the £190m case and that there was “no doubt about it”.

The case alleges that Imran and Bushra Bibi obtained billions of rupees and land worth hundreds of kanals from Bahria Town Ltd for legalising Rs50 billion that was identified and returned to the country by the UK during the previous PTI government. Last week, the National Accountability Bureau filed a reference in connection with the case.

“This biggest evidence is that they waved a sealed envelope [in a cabinet meeting] and asked for signatures on it. At least show us what is inside the envelope […] but they took approval by putting on blindfolds,” Nawaz claimed.

He further highlighted that the Supreme Court had recently ordered that an amount of Rs35 billion, which was remitted to the apex court’s bank accounts maintained in the name of the SC registrar in the Bahria Town settlement, be transferred to the federal government.

“This was a huge theft and corruption,” he said. “On the other hand, we were sent to jail for not taking salaries from my son.”

Talking about the cases against him, the PML-N supremo said he got justice after seven years and even today he was visiting courts. “There is a court certificate that declared these cases bogus. But who registered these cases? Will anyone ask them why they registered these cases?” he demanded.

Earlier, Nawaz told his party workers that politics was truly about serving the country and doing something for the people.

Nawaz Sharif: ‘Wanted better relations with India, ousted for opposing Kargil’

Pakistan's former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday said that he was ousted from the government in 1999 by general Pervez Musharraf for opposing the Kargil as he thought that it was important to have good relations with India.

"I should be told why I was ousted in 1993 and 1999. When I opposed the Kargil plan saying it should not happen... I was ousted (by Gen Pervez Musharraf). And later what I said proved right," Nawaz Sharif said while talking to the aspirants of his party tickets for upcoming polls. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supreme leader said that he was removed and that he did not know why.

"I want to know why I was ousted every time," he asked, adding, “We have delivered on every front. During my tenure as PM, two Indian prime ministers visited Pakistan. Modi sahab and Vajpayee sahab had come to Lahore.”

Stressing that Pakistan needed to improve relations with India and other neighbouring countries, he said, “We will have to improve our relations with India, Afghanistan, and Iran. We need to make more stronger relations with China.”

Nawaz Sharif regretted that Pakistan lagged behind its neighbours in economic growth development saying, "The economy witnessed a downfall during Imran Khan's government (2018-2202). Then the Shehbaz Sharif government took over in April 2022 and rescued the country from default."

He also reiterated his demand for accountability of former military generals and judges for ruining the country by ousting his government in 2017 saying, “Those who brought this country to this level should be made accountable as patriotic people can't do this to their country. We do not want to come into power to roam around in luxury cars but we want accountability of those (who) ruined this country and made false cases against us.”

How much closer is Nawaz to premiership?

In the wake of the Islamabad High Court’s decision to consider former premier Nawaz Sharif's appeal on merit in the Al-Azizia reference, uncertainties loom over his participation in the upcoming general elections, triggering concerns within the PML-N.

Insiders have disclosed that the party's leading legal and political strategists are currently deeply immersed in discussions, exploring a range of options to surmount the last obstacle impeding Nawaz's journey back to power. The party is concerned that any potential delay might pose a significant stumbling block, jeopardizing his eligibility and leaving it hanging in the balance.

On Thursday, the IHC decided to hear Nawaz Sharif's appeal regarding his conviction in the Al-Azizia reference on merit. The move indicates the court's intention to delve into the substantive aspects of the case — examining charges, defences, evidentiary weight, and more — instead of focusing solely on procedural or jurisdictional matters.

After the IHC's move to deliberate Nawaz Sharif's appeal on merit, he sought counsel from the legal team,” party sources said. In a briefing to Nawaz and other senior leaders, the legal team pointed out that despite Nawaz’s sentence in the Al-Azizia reference being suspended, his disqualification remains a looming concern. There's a fear that if the reference is deliberated on merit by the IHC, further delays might ensue.

The legal team stressed that a court order for PML-N supremo’s acquittal before the submission of nomination papers was critical. A prolonged acquittal process could result in legal complexities surrounding the nomination papers, likely to be challenged in court.

Exploring various legal avenues, they considered seeking interim relief from the IHC to facilitate the nomination paper submission or engaging other available forums, including the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

However, with the reference pending in the high court, the option of recourse to the Supreme Court remains inaccessible for the party at present.
With only 58 days left until the impending general elections and the ECP stipulating a minimum 54-day election schedule, experts anticipate the imminent announcement of the election schedule, necessitating the timely submission of nomination papers.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif on Monday reiterated his disappointment over the ousting of his government in 2017, suggesting that the 2018 elections may have been manipulated to bring the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) into power.

“Nation wants to know what really transpired during the 2018 elections,” he remarked while addressing the party's potential candidates for the upcoming general elections after leading the parliamentary board panel in Lahore. Nawaz stressed the importance of rectifying "mistakes" for the nation's benefit.

During the session, the former prime minister underscored the significance of ethical conduct, asserting that true honour comes from serving the people and prioritising the country's improvement over personal interests.

Nawaz claimed that in 2017, the country was on a positive trajectory, and there were expectations of PML-N's success in the 2018 elections. He suggested that their strong performance posed a threat to other parties' prospects in the polls.

Expressing deep concern about the current state of the country, Nawaz remarked on its diminished global standing, saying, "We should regret that we are one of the worst-performing countries in the world at the moment." He highlighted the dependence on imports and lamented that the country, built with great expectations, was facing economic challenges.

Nawaz emphasised the need for redressal, noting the impact of inflation on people's livelihoods, with many struggling to pay their electricity bills.

On Saturday, Nawaz focused on diplomatic relations, advocating for improved ties with neighbouring countries such as India, Afghanistan, and Iran. He emphasised that Pakistan's global credibility relies on amicable relations with its bordering nations.

During the sixth session of the party's parliamentary board in Lahore, Nawaz recalled the Kargil war events in 1999, stating that his government opposed it. He emphasised that subsequent reflection validated the correctness of their stance.

Nawaz clarified that opposing Kargil wasn't a sign of weakness and underscored their commitment to tough decisions in matters of national interest, citing the example of conducting atomic tests despite opposition from world powers to make Pakistan invincible.

In boost to PM bid, Nawaz Sharif acquitted in Al-Azizia reference

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) Tuesday acquitted Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif in the Al-Azizia reference, in a major boost for the senior politician's bid to become the next prime minister of the country.

The biggest hurdle now for the three-time prime minister to contest the upcoming elections on February 8, 2024, is his lifetime disqualification as a parliamentarian, with the PML-N hopeful of a positive outcome in that as well.

“It is unfortunate that if a former prime minister is facing such sham cases, then [we can’t imagine] what is happening to a common man,” senior lawyer Irfan Qadir told Geo News, calling upon the judges who convicted Nawaz to apologise to the nation.

He mentioned that it was the Supreme Court that had instructed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to file references against Nawaz in light of the controversial Panama verdict.

It is worth mentioning that despite the case being pending since 2017, the NAB prosecutor failed to provide any evidence against the PML-N supremo for having assets beyond means, noting that the reference was filed based on directions from the JIT — formed on the SC’s direction.
An accountability court on December 24, 2018, sentenced the former prime minister to seven years in jail and imposed a fine of 2.5 million pounds in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference.

Nawaz had submitted an appeal against the decision of the accountability court, requesting the court to annul the imprisonment and fine awarded along with the conviction.

It may be noted that Nawaz has also been acquitted in the Avenfield Apartments reference, after the high court last month accepted his appeal on the conviction in the case.

PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif, a day after his acquittal in the Al-Azizia corruption reference, said the cases against him were "hollow" and the "lies have evaporated".

Addressing the PML-N's parliamentary board in Lahore, Nawaz thanked the Almighty for his acquittal and said the sole purpose of the cases was to bring down PML-N's government.

Referring to the bench which sentenced him in the corruption case, he asked what wrong had he done that he was referred to as 'Sicilian mafia'.

"Even though I was punished as an individual, the real punishment was given to the 250 million people of Pakistan," said the PML-N supremo and added that the cases against him were "hollow" and the "lies have evaporated" the people knew the truth.

"An elected prime minister was disqualified for not drawing a salary from his son."

Nawaz, naming the top army generals of the time, said he never conspired against Faiz, Bajwa or Raheel. "But everyone should know who was involved in the conspiracy," said the elder Sharif brother as he maintained that his party leaders and workers knew he was innocent.

He reiterated that neither he nor his party seeks revenge against those who wronged him, but they should be held accountable for the injustices they committed against the people of Pakistan.

"The decision announced [by the court] was a joke, is there any remedy for such suffering," asked Nawaz.

Referring to the upcoming general elections on February 8, Nawaz said the country's largest court will take shape on the day and a people's JIT will be formed - a reference to the JIT formed against Nawaz in the corruption reference which investigated him including his family.

A day earlier, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) potentially laid to rest the specter of Panamagate haunting former Nawaz's political resurgence.

The IHC, led by Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, absolved him in the remaining case from the Panama verdict – the Al-Azizia reference.

The court's decision nullified the accountability court's imposition of a seven-year imprisonment sentence, while rejecting the National Accountability Bureau's (NAB) plea to return the reference to the trial court.

It is pertinent to note that the PML-N supremo’s disqualification from holding public office persists as decreed by the Supreme Court in the aftermath of the Panama Papers case.

Furthermore, in a subsequent ruling that interpreted Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution, which pertains to honesty and trustworthiness, the apex court confirmed that this disqualification is perpetual, barring him from public office for life.

However, earlier this year, amendments were introduced to the Elections Act, of 2017, reducing the disqualification period for lawmakers to a maximum of five years, applying retroactively.

For Nawaz to be eligible to participate in the upcoming elections slated for February 8, 2024, the removal of a lifelong ban on holding any public office is imperative.

Nonetheless, the party believes the eligibility battle is over, making his path to PM Office all but clear and smooth.

Nawaz Sharif wants to uplift entire country, says Nehal Hashmi

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior leader Nehal Hashmi said on Friday that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif wants to uplift the country from Karachi to Quetta.

The PML-N delegation, headed by Nehal Hashmi, called on Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) leader Aminul Haque. On this occasion, Hashmi said, “The PML-N is concerned regarding the delimitations.”

Expressing his thoughts, Aminul Haque took a swipe at the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), saying, “We will free the masses from corrupt parties like the PPP.”

The MQM-P leader said, “We want free and transparent elections in the country.” “Even people close to Bilawal are saying the latter needs training. Shehbaz Sharif will take no fees from the latter,” he said.

Speaking about the upcoming polls, Hashmi said: “Our [PML-N’s] preparations for the general elections had been completed.

Elections: PML-N likely to finalise its candidates by Monday

ISLAMABAD: No political party has announced list of its candidates for upcoming elections to the National and provincial assemblies in the country despite the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced polls schedule.

Well-placed political sources told The News that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) has completed working for more than 70 percent constituencies to choose its candidates, so it is likely that the list of first batch of the ticket holders would be made public tomorrow (Sunday).

The PMLN parliamentary board has held 10 meetings to finalise candidates from various areas and expected to complete its task on Monday (December 18).

The PPP, JUIF, MQM-Pakistan, GDA, ANP, BAP and regional parties would issue the list of their candidates mid next week.

They are engaged in seat adjustment with other parties. While the fate of the PTI is still hanging in balance as the ECP would give its verdict on its intra-party elections on Monday.

It has been indicated that two former prime ministers belonging to the PMLN Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif would contest polls from Lahore. Shahid Khaqan Abbasi who hails Murree but last time elected from Lahore, has opted to stay away from the elections.

The two ex-PMs from the PPP; Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani and Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, will be contesting from Multan and Gujar Khan respectively.

PMLN Chief organiser Maryam Nawaz would be contesting from Lahore and Karachi, while PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari would be a candidate from Karachi and Larkana. Former President and PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari would try his luck from Nawab Shah.

Maulana Fazal ur Rehman would contest from Dera Ismail Khan. Jamat e Islami Ameer Siraj ul Haq would contest polls from Peshawar.

Nawaz hints at bringing ‘Shehbaz speed’ to Karachi

LAHORE: Hinting that the party may field his younger brother as a candidate from Karachi, PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif on Monday asked residents of the city by the sea why they ignored his party in the polls even though it had served them best.

Addressing ticket aspirants from Sindh at the party’s provincial secretariat in Model Town on Monday, he boasted of all the development work carried out in Lahore under Shehbaz Sharif’s watch, adding that no such project was completed in Karachi.

“We maintained peace and ended terrorism in Karachi. We made a tunnel in Chitral, but when the elections took place the people voted for someone else... why?” he asked, adding that his government had also set up a 2,200MW power plant in Sindh and also made electricity from coal there.

Drawing a comparison between his brother’s development works in Punjab with those in Karachi, the elder Sharif said: “Why no progress is made in Karachi... not a single water project was completed while we had initiated the Green Line work there, but buses have yet to ply. On the contrary, Shehbaz Sharif had launched a metro bus project in Punjab and the Orange Line in Lahore.”

Asking Karachiites to do some ‘soul searching’ ahead of the upcoming elections, he hinted that Shehbaz may be running for election from a Karachi constituency.

If Shehbaz Sharif does run for office from Karachi, it may be on the same Baldia Town seat that he contested in the 2018 elections. However, that time around, he lost to then-PTI leader Faisal Vawda in NA-249, which has now been renumbered to NA-242 in the upcoming polls.

His candidature was one of the points agreed upon with MQM-P leaders during a recent meeting. The party had planned to field Mustafa Kamal from the same constituency, but reportedly backed down after it emerged that Mr Sharif may seek to contest from there.

Party sources told Dawn that one of the main reasons why Shehbaz Sharif may contest from Karachi would be to negate the impression that the city has never been important for the PML-N.

This is the narrative that has been built by their rivals in Sindh over the years, a source said.

However, PML-N Karachi chapter general secretary Nasiruddin Mahmood has been quite confident for some time that the younger Sharif would contest from Karachi.

“Mian Sahib is for sure going to contest from Karachi,” he told Dawn a few weeks ago.

Nawaz censures judges for legitimising dictators

LAHORE: PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday lashed out at judges for legitimising military dictators and taking action against elected prime ministers.

“Judges garland the ones (military dictators) who break the Constitution, rather they legitimise their rule. When the parliament is dissolved and the prime minister is sent to jail, they (judges) endorse these actions,” Mr Sharif said while addressing the ticket aspirants from Faisalabad at the party secretariat in Model Town.

Nawaz said the judges allowed the military dictator to amend the constitution. “These are the reasons for the situation we are in today. No one else but we are responsible for this. Neither India nor the United States and Afghanistan are behind Pakistan’s miseries,” he said.

The elder Sharif also indirectly talked about former ISI chief Gen Faiz Hamid for what he said, pressuring a judge not to give post-arrest bail to him and his daughter Maryam Nawaz as their two-year ‘hard work’ would go waste.

Targeting PTI supremo Imran Khan, Nawaz said he (Khan) never tired of saying that green passport’s respect would be ensured and New Pakistan be built.

“But despite all his tall claims, it (PTI) could not win the 2018 polls and rigging was done through RTS to make the selected person PM. He was made premier with a margin of four votes and to arrange these helicopters and planes were used (to transport the parliamentarians),” the elder Sharif said in reference to sugar baron Jahangir Khan Tareen whom the PML-N used to lambast for using his aircraft to buy the loyalties of independent lawmakers.

Nawaz Sharif said the MQM and some parties (referring to BAP) and individuals were also sent by the establishment to the PTI’s camp.

"This Is Not Done By India": Nawaz Sharif On Pakistan Economy

During a conversation with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) ticket aspirants, Nawaz Sharif, who is eying to become prime minister for a record fourth time, pointed out that he was ousted from power three times in 1993, 1999 and 2017.

Lahore: Pakistan's former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday said neither India nor the US were behind the cash-strapped country's miseries but "we shot ourselves in our own foot", indirectly referring to the powerful military establishment for its woes.

During a conversation with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) ticket aspirants, the party supremo, who is eying to become prime minister for a record fourth time, pointed out that he was ousted from power three times in 1993, 1999 and 2017.

“Today where Pakistan has reached (in terms of the state of the economy) this is not done by India, the US or even Afghanistan. In fact, we shot ourselves in our own foot...they (a reference to the military) imposed a selected (government) on this nation by rigging the 2018 polls that led to the sufferings of the people and downfall of the economy,” Sharif said.

The 73-year-old leader castigated the judges for legitimising military dictators.

“The judges garland them (military dictators) and legitimise their rule when they break the Constitution. When it comes to a prime minister the judges stamp his ouster. The judges also approve the act of dissolution of the parliament...why?” he asked.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz supremo lashed out at former ISI chief Gen Faiz Hamid for his role in ousting him from power in 2017. “A case has been opened in the Supreme Court against those (Faiz Hamid and others) who had said that if Nawaz came out of jail their two-year hard work would be wasted,” he said.

The PML-N leader, who returned to the country from London in October ending a four-year-long self-imposed exile, is the only Pakistani politician who became the prime minister of the coup-prone country for a record three times.

On Monday, Nawaz said that in 1999, "I was prime minister in the morning and in the evening I was declared a hijacker. Similarly in 2017, I was ousted from power for not taking salary from my son." "They (military establishment) made this decision as they wanted to bring their selected man into power,” he said, referring to his arch-rival Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf supremo Imran Khan.

In a televised address to the nation on Thursday last, the three-time former prime minister blamed the military establishment of 2014-17 for forcing senior judges to remove him from power.

"They (a reference to the military establishment) visited the residences of senior judges and threatened them. They achieved the required court verdicts against me through coercion," he said.

Court defers Toshakhana case hearing against Nawaz, Zardari till Jan 4

An accountability court of Islamabad on Wednesday adjourned hearing of the Toshakhana reference pertaining to luxury vehicles against PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif, PPP-P President Asif Ali Zardari and Yousaf Raza Gilani till January 4.

Accountability court Judge Muhammad Bashir conducted hearing of Toshakhana case against Sharif, Zardari and others. Sharif's counsel Qazi Misbah and pleader Rana Irfan appeared before judge whereas NAB's special prosecutor Irfan Bhola and Sohail Arif were also present in the court.

The court was prayed to restore applications filed by general public. These applications were filed about auction of properties owned by Sharif and court orders issued over that.

The defence counsel told the court that applicants had raised objections and after amendment in the law hearing over those objections were put off. These were six applications. He requested the court to issue orders over these applications.

He added that there were five miscellaneous applications too. He said details of these applications will be provided to the court. The prosecutor told the court that investigation officer had been transferred so he needed more time for preparation.

Nawaz picks Mansehra to stage electoral comeback

LAHORE/MANSEHRA: After getting a clean chit from the courts, PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif will contest elections for the National Assembly seat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s NA-15 (Mansehra), his son-in-law Captain Muhammad Safdar told reporters on Wednesday.

“Nawaz Sharif will be our election candidate from NA-15 (Mansehra-II). He will become the prime minister as an elected representative of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to address the province’s deprivation,” Mr Safdar told reporters outside the deputy commissioner’s office in Mansehra.

He said he had received nomination papers for the former prime minister and would submit them today.

He said Amir Muqam would be the PML-N’s choice for KP chief minister, whereas his wife, Maryam Nawaz, is the party’s candidate for the Punjab CM office. A formal announcement in this regard would be made later, he added.

Mr Safdar, who previously contested polls from NA-15, said he would not contest elections this time as he wanted to become a senator. “I will never decline the party’s offer for a Senate ticket,” he said.

It may be noted here that PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif is likely to submit his nomination papers for Lahore’s NA-123, PP-158, and PP-164 seats. He is also expected to file papers from Karachi’s NA-242. Maryam Nawaz is expected to file nomination papers for the NA-119 seat as well as two PA seats in Lahore.

Nawaz reiterates 'no revenge' mantra as elections near. He deems it necessary to hold those accountable who drove Pakistan into unprecedented crisis

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif said Wednesday he does not seek revenge for the atrocious wrongs committed against him, but deems it necessary to hold those accountable who drove Pakistan into unprecedented crisis and made peoples lives unbearably miserable.

Addressing a meeting of the PML-N parliamentary committee, Nawaz said he was made to suffer unspeakable pain as he was not even allowed to speak to his wife as she was breathing her last.

Nawaz remembered how he had to break the news of the death of her mother to Maryam Nawaz, his daughter and PML-N Chief Organiser, while they were in jail. He also listed the grand smear campaign “ruthlessly run with insults and threats by sitting members of the higher judiciary”.

The PML-N supremo talked about the baseless frivolous cases concocted against him, which were, at the time, even mocked by legal experts but were pushed through to persecute him anyways. But, Nawaz said, he does not seek revenge for all that was unlawfully, illegally, and unjustly done against him.

The former prime minister, however, emphasised that the unimaginable damage done to his country and the people of his country would not go unaccounted for.

"Those who made survival of honest, hardworking, patriotic Pakistanis, virtually impossible, would have to answer for their horrific deeds. The largest JIT, with the largest bench, will deliver the biggest decision on February 8, by the people of Pakistan", the PML-N supremo stressed.

Justice is being served now it is time for retribution

I know Nawaz Sharif is not a vengeful man however for Pakistan to move forward it is essential for all those responsible for project Imran to face the stern hand of the law and get the punishments they deserve

Pakistan's justice system has collapsed. No real justice is being served in this country now. No wonder Pakistan's judiciary stands at almost 150th place in the world.

RO accepts Nawaz's nomination papers for NA-130 Lahore

The returning officer of NA-130 Lahore accepted the nomination papers of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday.

The RO, Asghar Joya, completed the scrutiny of the papers, allowing the PML-N chief to contest from the constituency in the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8.

No objections were against Nawaz's nomination papers.

Speaking to the media, PML-N leader Bilal Yasin said Nawaz will emerge victorious from NA-130 on February 8 and will "become prime minister of Pakistan for the fourth time".

“All legal obligations are fulfilled in Nawaz Sharif’s case,” lawyer Amjad Parvez informed the media and added that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had established a portal for the scrutiny of nomination papers.

“Nawaz has fulfilled all the requirements available on the election commission’s portal," Parvez said and added the RO was satisfied with all requirements.

The PML-N supremo has also submitted nomination papers for NA-15 Mansehra, however, they have yet to be accepted by the local RO. .

Legal conundrum

The former premier was disqualified in the Panama Papers case in July 2017 by the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC).

The judges of the apex court had ruled that Nawaz had been dishonest to the parliament and the courts in not disclosing his employment in a Dubai-based company in his 2013 nomination papers, and thus, could not be deemed fit for his office.

Later, an accountability court awarded him 10 years imprisonment in the Avenfield apartments and seven years in Al-Azizia references. However, he has been acquitted in both cases by the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

However, before the general elections in 2024, the SC will resolve the contradiction between the judicial decision and the parliamentary legislation on whether disqualification under Article 62 of the Constitution means for life or five years.

But he is disqualified and so far the SC hasn't overturned the decision. No doubt Qazi easy paisa will have a bunch of criminals letting off a fellow criminal but that hasn't happened yet.

Nawaz Sharif has never been the "prodigal son". The establishment has worked against him most of the time.

Even in current state, their is only a disillusion that he is the prodigal son. It's more that the establishment absolutely detests Imran Khan and Nawaz Sharif is the only leader capable of competing against Imran.

Who created NS? Who created the IJI to make him PM? Who helped to defeat BB and make him PM with a 2/3rd majority in 1997? Who helped him to attack the SC with his goons in 1999? Who gave him an NRO in 2007? Who saved him from the murder of 14 innocent people in Model Town? Who helped him to go abroad straight from prison? Who gave him another NRO in 2021? Who killed Arshad Sharif on his behalf? Who had Imran Riaz kidnapped on his behalf? Who locked up IK on hid behalf and took the bat symbol and attacked his candidates when trying to register as candidates? Who keeps getting Sanam Javed arrested?

And this is only 1% of the benefits that crook has received?

Nawaz ‘cleared’ to contest NA seat in Mansehra

LAHORE: The nomination papers of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif for Mansehra’s NA-15 constituency were reportedly approved by the respective returning officer on Thursday, whereas separate decisions were reserved on objections to the nomination papers of PPP chief Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and ex-premier Imran Khan in Lahore.

In NA-15, objections were moved against Nawaz Sharif by PTI leader Azam Swati through his representative Shahid Rafiq, a local party leader. The papers, however, were initially cleared by the RO after she rejected the objections.

The PTI leader argued that the PML-N supreme leader had been disqualified for life by the Supreme Court and added the RO was not authorised to approve the nomination papers. But Mr Sharif was cleared.

In Lahore’s NA-122 constituency, the nomination papers of ex-PM Imran Khan were contested on grounds of his punishment in the Toshakhana case. The objector said the court had only suspended the sentence, not the conviction handed out to the PTI leader in the case. It was claimed that the approver was not a voter in the NA-122 constituency, which meant that they could not become an approver.

Mr Khan’s counsel contested the claim and said the approver was registered as a voter in the same constituency, but his name was removed from the rolls due to the new delimitation on Dec 15. The lawyer further said that the ECP could not punish anyone, adding that Article 62 and Article 63 did not apply to the former PTI chairman.

In NA-127, PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari was represented by Irfan Qadir, who argued that the person who objected to the nomination papers of the PPP chief was not a registered voter in the constituency.

The returning officer reserved the decision after hearing arguments. Ali Qasim Gilani, Lahore PPP President Chaudhary Aslam Gill, and others were also present at the hearing. Mr Gill is the covering candidate for Mr Bhutto-Zardari from the constituency.

The PPP leaders believed that the RO would set aside the objections because the person who contested the papers was not authorised to do so under the election rules. They wondered how a resident of Narowal could object to the nomination of a candidate for a Lahore seat.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz supremo Nawaz Sharif, while addressing a session of the party’s parliamentary board on Saturday, stated that after winning the 2024 elections, together they would lead the country out of challenges and difficulties like a team.

“You have been of great help to me. You have supported me. All your words are etched in my heart,” the former premier said to the party members who praised his leadership skills.

Recalling his stints as the country’s prime minister, Nawaz Sharif said that PML-N leaders had worked day and night and strengthened his hands in order to offset electricity load-shedding and complete several development projects. “This service is not ordinary. It is unparalleled.”

About the difficult decisions made by the former PDM-led government, Nawaz Sharif said that at a time when many people were criticising the PML-N for taking over, Shehbaz Sharif tackled difficult situations with patience and saved the country from default.

When IK left we had reserves of around 18bn, it wasn't great but a big improvement on when he came to power. Our problem isn't too much imports, it's too few exports. And when NS came to power in 2013, they weren't great but he had an amazing opportunity to improve exports. Guess what he did, instead of using the opportunity of low commodity prices as the engine for growth, he used the dollars to subsidise imports as the Rp was artificially pegged to the dollar. We used billions of precious dollars to destroy our exports and keep imports cheap by some estimates around 35%. I know people don't understand this because if they did they wouldn't be claiming that Under NS things were cheap( without context).

Nawaz to exit country before polls: Aitzaz

Veteran politician and esteemed lawyer Aitzaz Ahsan has made startling predictions regarding PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif, suggesting that the former premier might once again exit the country before the upcoming elections and keep tabs on the results from abroad.

Ahsan shared his insights during an interview with a private news channel on Friday.

Pointing out that the PML-N supremo “is abroad anyways”, Ahsan speculated on the possibility of Nawaz’s absence during the crucial electoral period.

He also commented on JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman, implying a potential withdrawal from the electoral race. He described him as drumming the beats of retreat rather than victory, signalling a step back from active participation.

“Two drums that are beaten — either of victory or retreat — Fazl seems to be beating the drum of a retreat”.

Previously, he had labelled Nawaz as a "ladla" (blue-eyed) and accused the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the interim government of orchestrating efforts to secure a two-thirds majority for Nawaz Sharif in the upcoming general elections.

Nawaz Sharif, who returned to Pakistan on October 21 after a four-year self-imposed exile, expressed disinterest in seeking retribution and emphasised embarking on a new path towards progress.

Commenting on the ongoing confrontations between the PTI and the ECP, Ahsan criticised the election watchdog's persistence in pursuing the matter further.

He questioned the ECP's role, suggesting it should focus on conducting elections rather than engaging in disputes. Ahsan specifically highlighted the controversy surrounding PTI's bat symbol and criticised the ECP's bias against the party. “Is the ECP conducting elections or contesting them?” he asked.

The lawyer was referring to the ECP's decision to challenge the Peshawar High Court's (PHC) ruling that reinstated PTI's election symbol.

Ahsan underscored the commission's reluctance to comply with PHC's directives, including the publication of PTI's intra-party elections certificate on the ECP's official website and the restoration of the party's election symbol.

He elaborated on the repercussions of contesting judgments, saying it would lead to a chain reaction of legal challenges.

He rhetorically questioned the legitimacy of such actions, likening them to a hypothetical scenario where a district judge contests a high court's decision, prompting a subsequent appeal to the Supreme Court.

“If the high court reverses the decision of the district court, should the district judge go to the Supreme Court to ask why the high court has given a decision against his decision?”

NS the wannabe dictator without any democratic norms or humanity has shown us what we knew in 1999. He knows he has no support but has carried on regardless. He has shown PKs total contempt and the fact that no one can understand or defend the indefensible will mean his death will be celebrated. He needs to remember he isn't God and he will have to face the music.

PML-N stands united as never before: Nawaz

LAHORE: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif stated on Saturday that the PML-N is now stronger and more united than ever, emphasizing the party's commitment to rescuing the people of Pakistan amidst current economic challenges.

During the PML-N parliamentary board meeting, Nawaz praised his brother Shehbaz Sharif, the party president, for his unwavering commitment to both the party and the people of Pakistan.

He credited Shehbaz for successfully addressing the electricity shortage crisis, highlighting the pivotal role played by his brother in leading the country through challenging times.

Acknowledging the resilience of PML-N leaders Maryam Nawaz and Hamza Shehbaz, Nawaz praised their bravery in the face of adversity and their unwavering support for the party's cause.

Shehbaz reciprocated the admiration, attributing his political achievements to Nawaz's guidance and support. "I now have only one wish, and that is to see Nawaz Sharif lead the country out of this crisis as the prime minister for a fourth time. My politics started with Nawaz Sharif, and it will end with him."

Former federal minister Saad Rafique, speaking on the occasion, highlighted pivotal moments in the PML-N's history, such as Maryam's march towards the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), which signalled the party's enduring strength against political victimization.

Former defense minister Khawaja Asif dismissed criticisms of ancestral politics, asserting that young leaders like Hamza and Maryam have proven themselves through resilience, resistance, and a commitment to public service.

Maryam expressed gratitude to Shehbaz, Asif, and Rafique for their generous words. Reflecting on her initiation into politics amidst extraordinary circumstances, she affirmed her satisfaction with any role the party entrusted to her.

"I had decided that upon the return of PML-N Quaid (Nawaz Sharif) on October 21, I would lead a life akin to that of my mother. I would refrain from participating in any elections, harboring no desire for any ticket. I would remain content with whatever role the party deems fit for me," she said.

Addressing the gathering, Hamza conveyed the wisdom imparted by his late grandfather, Mian Sharif, who advised his sons and the entire family that no situation or challenge is insurmountable as long as they remain united and extend good wishes to each other.

Hamza emphasized that it was this counsel that Shehbaz Sharif adhered to throughout his life, steadfastly rejecting any attempts to disrupt the unity in the party.

He underscored the continuation of this unity between himself and Maryam, rooted in the same guidance from Mian Sharif. He asserted that unwavering unity within the PML-N is essential for resolving Pakistan's challenges.

PML-N Punjab President Rana Sanaullah applauded the resilience of Shehbaz and Nawaz, hailing them as the bedrock of the party. He commended the achievements of Hamza and Maryam, expressing optimism about the party's future under their leadership.

PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif's nomination papers for NA-130 were challenged on Monday after a petition was submitted before the appellate tribunal.

Ishtiaq Chaudhry, the chief of Pakistan Awami Mahaz (PAM), submitted the appeal and asserted that Nawaz has been disqualified for life by the Supreme Court, rendering him ineligible to contest the elections scheduled for February 8.

Chaudhry claimed that the returning officer (RO) approved Nawaz's nomination papers contrary to the facts, hence, he prayed that Nawaz be declared ineligible and his nomination papers be rejected.

Recently, the three-time prime minister returned to Pakistan's political landscape with aspirations to participate in the 2024 general election. On December 26, RO Asghar Joya of NA-130 Lahore accepted Nawaz's nomination papers after thorough scrutiny, with no objections raised.

The former premier will contest against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) stalwart Dr Yasmin Rashid and 22 other candidates for NA-130 if his nomination papers clear the latest legal challenge.

Legal conundrum

The former premier was disqualified in the Panama Papers case in July 2017 by the Supreme Court (SC).

An election appellate tribunal on Wednesday summoned the returning officer (RO) on an appeal filed against the acceptance of PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif's nomination papers from NA-130.

The objection raised pertained to Nawaz's lifetime disqualification.

The registrar's office had initially raised objections to the appeal for not annexing the attested copy of the RO's decision, however, Justice Rasaal Hassan Syed of the tribunal removed the objection.

The appellant asked the election tribunal if the nomination papers of an individual who has been disqualified by the Supreme Court can be accepted and whether the judgement of the apex court was not binding on all institutions.

The appellant also questioned the possibility of being restricted from contesting elections without an adverse order from the RO.

The petitioner emphasised the unique nature of the matter, asserting that thei oldr nomination papers were rejected without any objection. The petitioner’s counsel argued that their client faced punishment for demanding the nomination papers of Nawaz, against whom objections were intended.

The petitioner implored the tribunal that the RO of constituency NA-130 had first refused to give the petitioner a copy of the nomination papers of Nawaz when he disclosed before him that he wanted to file objections against Nawaz. After the RO’s refusal, he had to file a sole objection that Nawaz’s nomination papers could not be accepted in the presence of lifetime disqualification by the country’s top court.

Furthermore, the petitioner further stated that the RO declined to provide the receipt of the objection. Astonishingly, despite the RO's assurance of no objections against the petitioner, their name was excluded from the final list, while Nawaz had been included in the candidate’s list.

The petitioner appealed to the LHC to overturn the RO's decision, arguing for the exclusion of their name and the rejection of Nawaz's nomination papers due to permanent lifetime disqualification.

You'd think PMLN would be doing a jalsa every few weeks now that their monarchic overlord has come back from his self-imposed exile.

Are they afraid that the little man can't pull numbers like he used to? They should try conducting another jalsa in Lahore, otherwise, what was the point of diverting almost all of Punjab's budget if not to create a stronghold where they can never lose, or at least not lose till now?

Still having nightmares about Nawaz Sharif? He is trying to sort out his legal issues and busy managing the party tickets. But the rallies will start soon. Don't worry.

That old man was first elected around 10 years before I was born, and yet his belly still isn't full. Anyone who still supports the corrupt monarchic who was exiled three times from Pakistan due to different charges each time is beyond redemption. Good thing most people have come to their senses and realized the type of monster this guy and his family are.

The biryani is right around the corner buddy, go get it in exchange for a vote.

It's humiliation for the duffer. Can't leave his house as the public think he is a loser that needed another NRO to save himself.

An accountability court in Islamabad adjourned on Thursday the hearing of references against former president Asif Ali Zardari and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in the Toshakhana case.

Judge Muhammad Bashir of the anti-graft court did not hear the case today due to the ongoing hearing of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan at Rawalpindi Central Jail.

The hearing pertains to vehicles taken from the Toshakhana by the co-chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo, PPP leader Yousuf Raza Gilani and others.

It should be noted that the NAB could not file a supplementary reference against the accused.

The hearing of the case was adjourned till January 15.

Zardari and Nawaz have been accused by the country’s top anti-corruption body of illegally retaining expensive vehicles gifted to them by different foreign states and dignitaries instead of depositing them in the Toshakhana.

The NAB also maintained that Gilani, during his tenure as the prime minister, facilitated the PPP co-chairman in retaining the vehicles.

According to the anti-corruption body, Zardari and Nawaz retained the vehicles “against a nominal payment of 15% of their total value” through “dishonest and illegal means for their personal benefit and interest”.

The anti-graft court had indicted Zardari and Gillani in the Toshakhana case on September 9, 2020. The court had also declared Nawaz a proclaimed offender in the same matter.
