An election tribunal in Abbottabad has adjourned the hearing on a plea challenging the acceptance of former prime minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif’s nomination papers till the disposal of the lifetime disqualification case by the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, the hearing on the case of former KP Assembly speaker Mushtaq Ahmed Ghani was adjourned till Saturday. Ghani’s nomination papers were rejected by the relevant returning officers for two seats on different grounds. Mushtaq Ahmed Ghani is currently in the UK and is expected to return in a couple of days. The appellate tribunal judge Justice Kamran Hayat Miankhel held detailed hearings on Thursday and Friday.

PML-N to unveil election manifesto on 15th

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) will unveil its manifesto for Feb 8 general elections on Jan 15 or 16 after which the party will formally kick off its countrywide election campaign.

As per party sources, the PML-N’s manifesto focuses on tackling increasing inflation, economic revival, eradicating unemployment and poverty, amending national accountability laws, and enhancing the local government system.

The manifesto will also determine whether caretaker governments are necessary for elections or if the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) alone can handle the responsibility, mirroring practices in neighbouring countries. Some sections of the Charter of Democracy (CoD) may be incorporated into the manifesto.

“Our party’s manifesto will be unveiled by mid of this month on Jan 15 or 16 by the party supremo Nawaz Sharif,” chairman of the PML-N’s manifesto committee Senator Irfan Siddiqui told Dawn on Saturday.

Although forthcoming general elections are approaching fast, none of the mainstream political parties, except Jamaat-i-Islami (JI), has formally announced their election manifesto.

Like PML-N, PPP, PTI and MQM-P are said to be in a process of making their manifestos for the polls.

Senator Siddiqui, said PML-N top leaders under the leadership of Nawaz Sharif will meet on Jan 9 at Lahore in which he will present the draft of the manifesto.

“The party leadership will go through the document and make some changes in it if deemed necessary and then the draft will be sent for printing.”

The PML-N’s manifesto will comprise an assessment of its 2013-2018 tenure and future plans.

To ensure implementation, a suggested council will periodically review and report to the party leadership on promise fulfilment after assuming power.

“Not a single political party has done such a hectic exercise for preparation of their manifestos and that was the reason the party has so far not presented its future plans before the nation,” Mr Siddiqui said when asked why there was delay in preparing the document.

“One of the reasons for the delay is that we are working hard to present a realistic manifesto as Nawaz Sharif has already directed that only those promises should be made with the people which the party can fulfil after coming into power,” he added.

He stated that certain political parties made grand promises during elections, knowing they wouldn’t come to power, and thus, their commitments were unrealistic. The PML-N’s manifesto will consist of two parts: an evaluation of the party’s performance during its 2013-2018 tenure and future plans.

To ensure manifesto implementation, a recommended council will periodically review and report to the party leadership on the fulfilment of promises after assuming power.

Pakistan Muslim League (PMLN) has decided against any seat adjustment with any political party in Lahore for the general elections to be held on February 8.

The initial list of tickets from Takht Lahore has been prepared by the PML-N for the general elections and the majority of the party leaders have decided not to adjust the seat from any other political party to the opponent.

Party leader Nawaz Sharif will contest from National Assembly Constituency NA-130 while Chief Organizer Maryam Nawaz will contest from NA-120.

Sardar Ayaz Sadiq from NA 117, Hamza Shehbaz from NA 118, and Ali Pervaiz Malik from NA 119 will be candidates.

Sheikh Rohail Asghar will contest from NA-121 while Saadrafique from NA-122 and Shahbaz Sharif from NA-123 will be party candidates.

Rana Mubasheraqbal will contest from NA 124, Afzal Khokhar from NA 125, and Saif Khokhar from NA 126.

Ata Tarar will contest against Chairman People's Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari from NA-127.

Hafiz Nauman will contest from NA-128 and Mehrashtiaq from NA-129.

Supreme Court announces verdict in lifetime disqualification case

The Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan on Monday declared lifetime disqualification for lawmakers under Article 62 (1)(f) of the Constitution ‘null and void’, ruling that parliamentarians would be barred from holding office only for five years, ARY News reported.

A seven-member larger bench, headed by the CJP and comprising Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Yahya Afridi, Justice Aminuddin Khan, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Musarrat Hilali, announced the reserved verdict on a set of petitions seeking to determine whether the disqualification period for a lawmaker was for five years or a lifetime.

The Supreme Court declared that no person can be barred for a lifetime from running in elections if they are disqualified under Article 62 (1)(f), boosting hopes for major politicians who are eyeing to contest polls.

The law is the same provision under which former prime minister and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party (IPP) Chairman Jahangir Tareen were disqualified.

In 2018, a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court unanimously held that disqualification handed down under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution is for life.

Under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution of Pakistan, which sets the precondition for a member of parliament to be ‘sadiq and ameen’ (honest and righteous), former prime minister and PMLN chief Nawaz Sharif was disqualified by the SC bench on July 28, 2017, in references about the Panama Papers.

Similarly, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder was also disqualified under the same article in the Toshakhana case in 2023.

However, in June, last year, the then-coalition government passed an amendment to the Elections Act 2017, which limited the disqualification of lawmakers to five years.

Nawaz vindicated, Nisar’s ‘injustice’ discarded: Marriyum on SC verdict

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has lauded the Supreme Court's decision to nullify lifetime disqualification of lawmakers, considering it a pivotal step towards restoring constitutional sanity.

According to Marriyum Aurangzeb, PML-N Central Secretary Information and former federal Minister of Information and Broadcasting, this ruling vindicates party supremo Nawaz Sharif and reinstates his honour. Aurangzeb condemned the short-lived vengeful actions of former chief justice Saqib Nisar, stating they have been dishonourably discarded.

The apex court, led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa and comprising Justices Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Yahya Afridi, Aminuddin Khan, Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Muhammad Ali Mazhar, and Musarrat Hilali, declared the lifetime disqualification under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution null and void. The decision passed with a majority of 6:1, with Justice Yahya Afridi dissenting.

Marriyum emphasised that the Supreme Court's decision reaffirms the supremacy of the Constitution and criticised the provision of lifetime disqualification, labeling it as a tool created to persecute and exclude Nawaz Sharif from Pakistani politics.

She called for accountability for those responsible for introducing such provisions, deeming it a serious offense against the Constitution of Pakistan.

In her statement, Marriyum urged this decision to serve as a lesson for the present and future, emphasising that true representatives of the people, supported by unwavering national love, cannot be eliminated due to the conspiratorial designs of a few individuals. She highlighted the historical vindication of Nawaz Sharif and the dishonourable dismissal of Saqib Nisar's vengeful actions.

Stressing the need for stringent consequences, Marriyum advocated for preventing any attempts to abrogate the Constitution for political gains. She asserted that the principle of constitutional sanctity and sanity should apply not only to Nawaz but to all patriotic political leaders of Pakistan.

Acknowledging Nawaz's patience, faith in God Almighty, and trust in the judicial system despite facing victimisation, Marriyum concluded by underlining that the power to qualify or disqualify representatives lies with the people of Pakistan through their votes.

Now there is a higher chance that Nawaz Sharif will become President of Pakistan. If he were to become Prime Minister for a fourth term, it would be unconstitutional.

In meetings with political bigwigs, foreign diplomats stress need for elections to be ‘free, fair and inclusive

The general elections in the country are scheduled for a month later. The run-up to the polls has been marred by concerns and accusations from political parties and civil society regarding the lack of a level playing field in the political arena.

The concerns were echoed in a meeting between British High Commissioner Jane Marriott and Nawaz in Lahore today.

According to a statement issued by the PML-N, the British diplomat said: “Holding inclusive elections on February 8 is critical to Pakistan’s future.”

Matters of mutual interest were discussed in the meeting attended by PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif, Senator Ishaq Dar and Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz.

“A strong relationship between Pakistan and Britain is in the interest of both countries. Pakistanis living in Britain are playing an important role in strengthening the friendship between the two countries,” the PML-N statement quoted Nawaz as saying.

He stressed that the promotion of relations between Pakistan and the UK in various fields such as trade and investment was the need of the hour.

Separately, US Ambassador in Pakistan Donald Blome visited Bilawal at Zardari House in Islamabad to “discuss current political issues, including the importance of free, fair, and inclusive elections”.

A press release from the US Embassy in Islamabad said the meeting came amid the ambassador’s engagements with a “broad range of Pakistani political stakeholders”.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has halted the inquiries against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his family in five corruption cases including the Sharif Trust case, Express News reported.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the country's top graft watchdog on January 1. Inquiries into Punjab Safe City Authority, Social Action Programme, Park Enclave and other cases have also been stopped.

The approval for the investigation into the Sharif Trust case was granted on March 31, 2000. The case alleged that the Sharif family had created anonymous properties in the name of the trust, utilised funds from the trust accounts without proper auditing, and engaged in financial misconduct.

Additionally, the Sharif family faced accusations of secretly accumulating millions of rupees under the trust's name.

Subsequently, the bureau terminated the investigation under Section 31-B of the National Accountability Act, 2022, as amended by the Shehbaz Sharif-led Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)-led government.

The amended law gives the NAB chairman authority to close the inquiries started under any other law.

Campaigning on hold as PML-N sorts out ticket dilemma

Despite Nawaz’s clearance from all cases, party yet to embark on campaign trail
Leaders ‘more concerned’ with securing tickets; move to accommodate IPP leaders ‘divides’ Sharif camp

LAHORE: With less than a month to go for the general election, PML-N is yet to kick-start its campaign as it is still sorting out ticket distribution and seat adjustment with the Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party (IPP) and PML-Q.

The party appears to be in no rush regarding the launch of its election campaign, and the confidence is apparently due to their “good equation” with the powers that be.

For now, the party’s only concern appears to be getting its candidates right for the national and provincial assemblies’ seats, especially in Punjab.

This is in stark contrast with the charged campaign by the PML-N’s erstwhile ally, the PPP, whose Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari remained in Lahore last week, openly campaigning in the city’s NA-127 constituency and calling out the Sharifs almost daily.

Unperturbed by this, the PML-N leadership, for now, is apparently content with ‘public addresses’ in indoor party meetings and media statements.

“Either the leadership knows that the polls are not taking place on Feb 8, or it is confident that only a couple of weeks will be enough for canvassing to emerge as the majority party,” a PML-N leader from Punjab told Dawn on Monday.

He also said that party leaders were less concerned about the election campaign and more preoccupied with securing their tickets.

“The party is likely to announce tickets for the National and Punjab assemblies in a couple of days. Perhaps after that, it may think about kicking off the election campaign.”

The leader expressed hope that the party will enter the campaign mode with the launch of its manifesto on Jan 15 or 16.

Earlier, PML-N secretary general Ahsan Iqbal had told Dawn the party would kick-start its campaign once the appeals of former premier Nawaz Sharif were decided.

However, it has been over a month since Mr Sharif’s acquittal in Avenfield and Al-Azizia cases, but the party has yet to launch a concerted push towards electioneering.

The Supreme Court’s verdict of Monday, throwing out lifetime disqualification for lawmakers under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution, has also effectively rendered the PML-N supremo free to contest the elections.

When contacted on Monday, Mr Iqbal did not comment on the delay in his party’s election campaign.

Ticket dilemma

The party’s seat adjustment with the IPP, in particular, has exacerbated its predicament regarding the distribution of tickets.

The party is “compelled” to accommodate key candidates of IPP, and ticket distribution in this way is likely to create resentment among PML-N loyalists, as well as IPP ranks, especially in Punjab.

A source in the IPP said that the party’s president, Aleem Khan, had requested the Sharifs to ask Maryam Nawaz Sharif to vacate the NA-119 seat in Lahore for him as he had already launched his campaign from there. “However, Ms Sharif told the leadership to adjust the IPP leader in NA-117, as even this would be a favour to him,” the source said.

Similarly, IPP patron-in-chief and sugar baron Jahangir Khan Tareen is keen to contest the National Assembly election from Lodhran, but the Sharifs want him to contest from Multan. Once of the reasons is that they don’t want to provoke the ire of Sadique Baloch, a strong candidate, who has threatened to contest independently if he is not awarded a ticket from Lodhran.

Separately, Awn Chaudhry, once a close confidant of PTI leader Imran Khan and now a central IPP leader, is vying for a National Assembly seat from Lahore. “He may be considered for NA-124 as he is close to Shehbaz Sharif,” sources said.

The PML-N has reportedly told the IPP that it would not accommodate PTI members who joined the party after the May 9 attacks.

“In such a scenario, IPP will get a very limited number of national and Punjab assembly seats,” said the IPP source, adding that the party had earlier sought over 100 seats from PML-N, which in turn had termed it a “non-serious demand”.

On the PML-N’s side, the powerful Khokhar group of Lahore has reportedly managed to secure at least two national and one Punjab assembly seats.

A big financier of the party, Saiful Malook Khokhar, is also a blue-eyed leader of the party’s chief organiser, Ms Sharif.

The president of PML-N’s Lahore chapter Mr Khokhar has secured National Assembly seats for himself and his brother, Afzal Khokhar.

With a Punjab Assembly seat also secured for his relative Imran Shafi Khokhar, Mr Khokhar is said to be lobbying for the accommodation of his cousin Faisal Khokhar in the PP-168 constituency.

This has resulted in disagreements among the Sharif family, with Ms Nawaz supporting Mr Faisal and her cousin, Hamza Shahbaz, putting his weight behind a party worker, Shabbir Khokhar.

“Even in a parliamentary board meeting, a question was raised whether the leadership is surrendering to the will of the wealthy Khokhars,” a party insider said.

To placate the malcontents, the party has promised candidates who might miss out on tickets that they would be accommodated in the Senate or given tickets for by-polls, the PML-N insider told Dawn.

Forward group emerges in PML-N Taxila

TAXILA: The local leadership of PML-N rejects possible seat adjustment with Istehkam Pakistan Party (IPP) candidate Ghulam Sarwar Khan in NA-54, Taxila and formed a forward group comprising Vice Chairman of Taxila and Wah Cantonment boards and their elected members.

In a joint press conference here on Wednesday they urged the party leadership not to go into any electoral alliance with party arch rival Ghulam Sarwar Khan as it would dent party votebank in upcoming general election which would benefit the other candidates especially Ch Nisar Ali Khan who is contesting general election as independent candidate.

Raja Kamran advocate while talking to newsmen said that in by-election of 2018, PML-N candidate Barrister Aqeel Malik clinched over 45,000 votes and now ignoring him in the award of ticket would not only create unrest among the party supporters besides it would divide the party votebank.

Malik Arif Mehmood, vice chairman cantonment board while commenting on the question has said that diehard workers of the partyare not happy with such a decision which is against the ground realities.

Unsatisfied with the resignations of the top jurists who it had criticised for giving judgments against its leaders, the PML-N on Thursday demanded that Supreme Court’s Justice Ijazul Ahsan must be held accountable and subjected to legal action.

Addressing a news conference following the resignation of Justice Ahsan, the senior puisne judge who the PML-N saw as a hurdle for its upcoming government, party’s central information secretary Marriyum Aurangzeb said his stepping down from the post was an admission of the allegations against him.

She added that a mere resignation could not exonerate the judge from his “terrible actions” against the people's elected leaders, democracy, and Constitution. Marriyum stressed that a resignation would not bury a plethora of controversial decisions and references against Justice Ahsan.

“The people of Pakistan demand that he [Justice Ahsan] must be held accountable for his actions in accordance with the law and merits of justice,” she continued.

The former federal information minister, while referring to PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif, raised the question that if a three-time elected premier could present himself, his entire family as well as political party for the most rigorous process of accountability, even in the circumstances primed for persecution and victimisation, why should any SC judge be exempted.

The PML-N leader lashed out at Justice Ahsan for making a mockery of justice, the SC and the office of top court judge just to target, persecute, and victimise Nawaz.

“Today Nawaz Sharif is being vindicated and the bench that persecuted him is eventually facing its destiny,” she added. Marriyum maintained that individuals including Justice Ahsan and former SC judge Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, who had resigned a day earlier, were responsible for the economic destruction of Pakistan, massive unemployment, and excruciating inflation.

“They must answer to the people for their ‘deplorable’ actions,” she demanded. The PML-N leader claimed that this “like-minded group” of individuals used its power, position and influence to target Nawaz.

Marriyum continued that these individuals had forgotten that power and position were a sacred trust of the people and temporary. “The resignation of these judges is proof that they were guilty of all these horrendous crimes against the nation and Constitution,” she added.

“Black sheep like Ijazul Ahsan and Mazahar Ali Naqvi cause institutional turmoil with their actions,” she claimed, continuing that the SC was being strengthened with the exit of such people.

Marriyum also criticised the Peshawar High Court’s decision to reinstate PTI's electoral symbol of the ‘cricket bat’ despite the party “grossly violating” the Election Commission of Pakistan's (ECP) rules and code of conduct.

The PML-N leader maintained that PTI founding chairman Imran Khan had proved once again through his party's “false” internal elections that he only believed in rigged and manipulated process of selection instead of holding democratic polls.

She added that Imran’s premiership and the PTI government became possible by rigging through the manipulation of the Results Transmission System (RTS). The ex-federal information minister claimed that Imran had become accustomed to winning the polls through rigging.

However, she did not comment on the PTI’s electoral symbol -- the ‘cricket bat’. PML-N Punjab President Rana Sanaullah also spoke on this development. He said all parties should be given the concession of not holding internal polls.

Sanaullah maintained that the PHC’s decision had made the Election Act, 2017 redundant. He continued that the decision was a victory for the violation of rules and defeat for the law.

“The decision proves that they still favour the ‘blue-eyed’,” he claimed, referring to Imran. The former interior minister said the PHC’s decision was an encouragement of the perpetrators of last year’s violence on May 9.

Voters to lean on Nawaz Sharif, Imran Khan's candidates in Feb 8 polls'

Former finance minister Miftah Ismail has predicted a tough battle between the nominated candidates of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan in the February 8 general elections.

Speaking to journalists at Lahore’s Alhamra on Sunday, Ismail anticipated that voters would primarily lean on Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan’s candidates, forecasting a tough electoral battle in the forthcoming polls.

The disgruntled PML-N leader also commented on the Supreme Court’s verdict and termed it an "inappropriate decision" to strip the former ruling party of its iconic electoral symbol — ‘bat’ — before the general elections.

He added that regardless of the top court’s verdict, the nation would still cast votes for those candidates who won PTI founder and PML-N supremo’s approval.

To a question regarding the ongoing privatisation of state-owned entities, the economist strongly favoured immediate selling of loss-making government institutions to the private sector which would be beneficial not only for economically and operationally paralysed organisations but also for the country.

He claimed that the fares of air travel would be dropped if Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is privatised.

Later in December last year, Ismail had dismissed media reports claiming that he was joining the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

In June, the disgruntled politician had announced that he was stepping down as PML-N's Sindh general secretary and all other party positions.

The politico had announced the decision after months of bitterness over his removal and the subsequent appointment of Ishaq Dar as the finance minister in September 2022.

He announced his resignation from the party office in a letter to Ahsan Iqbal, the PML-N secretary general.

Since he relinquished the finance ministry portfolio, Ismail has been continuously criticising the current political system, with much of it aimed at his successor as he failed to steer the country out of the economic crises.

The Nooras can never handle competition. Establishment has always saved them. What they have done to PTI would have happened to THE PPP in 99 had Mush not intervened with his coup, which in itself was scam because Mush made a deal with them.

Nawaz Sharif to launch election campaign with rally in Hafizabad

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif will kick off election campaign from Hafizabad tomorrow, ARY News reported on Wednesday.

The PML-N supreme will address a rally in Hafizabad – his first rally for general electios 2024.

PML-N Chief Organiser Maryam Nawaz and other senior party leaders will also address the Hafizabad rally.

The party of Pakistan’s former prime minister Nawaz Sharif officially launched its campaign on Monday.

The campaign for the Feb. 8 polls, delayed since November, looks set to fire up a lukewarm race so far amid an uncertain political environment.

Maryam Nawaz, who is also considered Nawaz’s political heir, started the party’s campaign at a rally in the eastern city of Okara in Punjab province.

“The more you vote for us the more you will see your household expenses going down,” she said amid inflation that has been hovering around 30% in recent months.

Sharif, who returned from self-exile in London late last year, has pledged to rebuild the country’s $350 billion economy, which is battling high inflation, an unstable currency and low foreign exchange reserves, despite averting a debt default with an IMF bailout last summer.

Major players such as the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) of late prime minister Benazir Bhutto have already begun campaigns, but these have been muted compared to past polls.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has started its campaign late, while Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) says it is not being allowed rallies.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif will present the party’s manifesto for the upcoming elections in a few days, party President Shehbaz Sharif stated on Wednesday.

Interacting with a group of journalists, the former prime minister affirmed that the decision made by the people of Pakistan, exercising their franchise rights on February 8, would be accepted by all political parties.

He shared that PML-N leaders Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Hamza Shehbaz would jointly lead the party’s election campaign.

Shehbaz termed the upcoming elections crucial for the fate of Pakistan.

Recalling Nawaz Sharif's previous tenure as prime minister, Shehbaz highlighted the remarkable progress made by the country, particularly in the agriculture and energy sectors. Unfortunately, he deplored, the government faced a downfall due to a conspiracy, led by former chief justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar, resulting in significant setbacks despite achieving an annual GDP growth of 6.2 percent.

Expressing his desire to resume the journey towards progress that halted in 2017, Shehbaz stated, "The journey towards progress will continue. It is Mian Nawaz Sharif's biggest wish."

Shehbaz recalled that during the PML-N-led PDM government, the party put its political capital at stake to save the country from default, working tirelessly day and night.

About the PTI losing its electoral symbol of the “bat”, Shehbaz clarified that the PML-N had no involvement in this matter. He questioned why the PTI could not hold intra-party elections in a year or during its government, adding, "Neither Nawaz Sharif nor Shehbaz Sharif stole the PTI election symbol."

Shehbaz acknowledged that Pakistan did not have large reserves of oil and gas, and had to pay billions of dollars to purchase oil. However, he considered the youth as Pakistan's assets and pledged that, upon coming into power, his party would provide them with modern education and establish more educational institutions across the country.

With general elections less than three weeks away, PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif on Thursday finally turned up to his party’s election rally, and said that his mission was to make Pakistan “stand on its feet again”.

The PML-N had kick-started its much-awaited election campaign, led by Maryam, earlier this week in Okara. The party had been facing criticism, especially from the PPP, for “staying indoors” — a dig at its underwhelming canvassing — despite polls being near.

At a rally in Hafizabad, the former prime minister — who returned to Pakistan in October last year after spending four years in self-imposed exile — spoke briefly before giving way to Maryam, whose was the final speech.

Nawaz, who arrived at the venue in a helicopter, recalled that when he was ousted from office in 2018, the people of Pakistan lost their representative. “Had I not been removed, not one person in Hafizabad would have been unemployed,” he said.

“If I was not removed, there would not have been a single problem that is plaguing the country today. The dollar would have been at Rs100, roti would cost Rs4 and Pakistan would have earned a reputable position in the world,” the PML-N supremo said.

He highlighted how the PML-N had eradicated terrorism and loadshedding in its tenure. “My mission is to make Pakistan stand on its feet and God willing we will fulfil this mission,” Nawaz promised, concluding his brief speech.

Meanwhile, PML-N chief organiser Maryam Nawaz said “the sher [tiger] will roar on Feb 8”.

“In London, Nawaz had said that we are people of May 28 and not those of May 9 […] the people of May 28 are the ones who made the country and the people of May 9 are those who destroyed the country,” she claimed, referring to the violent protests that erupted across Pakistan following PTI founder Imran Khan’s arrest.

“A man who is lying behind bars can never sympathise with the youth,” she said in a reference to Imran but did not take his name.

Maryam further stated that Nawaz led Pakistan to the path of progress, adding that even now the PML-N supremo was spending his time chalking measures to bring relief to the people.

Nawaz continues with cautious approach

PML-N founder Nawaz Sharif, who recently called off his Layyah election rally reportedly due to prior commitments, is now set to hit the stage again and address his second election campaign rally in Abbottabad on the January 22, the party's information confirmed on Saturday.

With elections approaching fast, PML-N's election campaign has yet to gain the momentum observed in previous elections. The party's main batsman, Nawaz Sharif, has not yet fully entered the election battleground.

So far, he has only spoken at one election rally in Hafizabad, and that too for a brief ten minutes as the second-to-last speaker. This move has left many puzzled, with some interpreting it as Nawaz indicating his successor to the party, while others see it as him being cautious to avoid ruffling any feather in Rawalpindi.

While his daughter, Maryam Nawaz, was already on her election campaign trail, according to her own party leaders, she wasn't in a position to fill her father's shoes.

Prior to his return from London, several PML-N leaders had emphatically stated that the former prime minister's presence in Pakistan to lead the election rally would be critical for the party's triumph in the upcoming elections.

Another unusual element was that the PML-N's campaign lacked any innovative pitch, and its speeches, aside from the customary promises, continued to revolve around tarnishing Imran Khan and his tenure as prime minister.

According to Marriyum Aurangzeb, Nawaz Sharif will address a rally in Abbottabad, where both Shehbaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz are also scheduled to speak. When questioned about the peculiarities of the Hafizabad rally, she did not provide a response.

Hamza's waning interest, Maryam's ambitions

Another notable absence from the PML-N’s election rallies was Shehbaz Sharif’s son, Hamza Shehbaz, who appears to have downgraded his position from that of a central party leader to a mere party candidate.

Despite the limited number of election rallies conducted, he did not participate in any of them. A party source believed that Maryam Nawaz has eaten away all the space Hamza had carved out for himself.

Citing an example, he said that Maryam Nawaz is actively involved at the union council level in Punjab, aiming to diminish Hamza Shehbaz's influence, given that local body level politics in Punjab was considered to be his stronghold.

He noted that Hamza Shehbaz, having lost the chief minister position twice in quick succession, appears to have waned in interest. On the contrary, Maryam is highly ambitious and keen on taking reins of Punjab.

In an unrelated development, Aun Chaudary, was among the seven lucky IPP leaders allocated a National Assembly constituency by PML-N, met with PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif.

It is noteworthy to mention here that PML-N had not yet openly endorsed IPP's candidates in the seven National Assembly and eleven provincial assembly constituencies.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz supremo and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday criticized past government for ruining the country’s economy and depriving Khyber Pakhtunkhwa of development projects.

“Nawaz Sharif left better Pakistan but now it is detracted”, the PML-N supremo said while addressing a public gathering in Mansehra, KP ahead of the February 8 general elections.

The ex-prime minister said that had he not been removed from power in 2017, the people of Mansehra would have been gifted an airport and a metro project.

He regretted that development work on the Sukkur-Hyderabad Motorway was stopped by the past government of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

He vowed to bring Pakistan back on the path of prosperity after coming into power.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz will again provide fuel, vegetables and other things at cheaper rates after coming into power, Nawaz Sharif claimed and added the issue of water will also be settled.

Sharif, who returned from self-exile in London late last year, has pledged to rebuild the country’s $350 billion economy, which is battling high inflation, an unstable currency and low foreign exchange reserves, despite averting a debt default with an IMF bailout last summer.

Nawaz Sharif seeks Pakistan to be 'rebuilt'

As all political parties are coming up with probable solutions to major challenges, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif has sought the country to be "rebuilt" while lamenting that the nation has fallen behind in the world.

The senior politico's remarks came during his third public address on Monday, since his October 21 return from a four-year self-imposed exile in London, while addressing a political gathering in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Mansehra — the same place PML-N supremo is contesting on NA-15 seat in the February 8 polls.

With upcoming elections less than three weeks away, political temperature has been on the rise in the country with political parties and their leaders avidly running their election campaigns in their bid to woo the nation of 240 million who will elect their representatives next month.

Reflecting on his previous tenure as the country's chief executive, the three-time former prime minister underscored that not only his government had restricted the dollar to 104 — against the Pakistani rupee — but had also "eliminated" the loadshedding from the country.

Without taking any names, Nawaz also fired a fresh salvo against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and its founder Imran Khan — PML-N's arch-foe and staunch critic — and lamented that the people of KP fell and voted for this "liar".

Recalling the 2013 elections, Nawaz said that Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman had approached him on forming a coalition government in KP, however, he decided against it in favour of respecting PTI's right to form the government due to their numbers.

"I ask the people of KP, what did they [PTI] do during their 10-year rule," the PML-N supremo said while taking a jibe at the party that ruled the province from 2013 till January 2023.

"These people have ruined this province," he added.

Promising to address rampant inflation, the politico reassured that, if voted into power, his government would ensure the creation of jobs and would see that Mansehra gets its own airport and that universities and colleges are set up in the area.

Nawaz Sharif angry on bringing lion in PML-N rally

Pakistan Muslim League (PMLN) supremo Nawaz Sharif took strict notice of bringing the wild cat—lion— to the party’s political campaign rally and directed to send the lion back immediately.

PMLN leader and former federal minister for information and broadcasting Maryam Aurangzeb tweeted that the lion was immediately sent back as Nawaz Sharif directed that the lion or any other animal should not be brought to any rally.

“The religion of Islam and laws related to animals have taught us to respect the rights of animals,” Maryam Aurangzeb said.

Nawaz holds maiden rally in his Lahore constituency

PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif held a maiden rally in his constituency — NA-130 (old city) — to mobilise party workers for the Feb 8 polls.

Accompanied by his daughter Maryam Nawaz, Mr Sharif started off the rally from the Taxali Road and after visiting different areas ended it at Zila Katchery (district court).

Mr Sharif visited this constituency after several years. His late wife Begum Kulsoom had also contested from it after he was disqualified by the apex court in 2017.

The rally was mainly organised by his relative Bilal Yasin, who is also contesting on a provincial seat from there.

Interestingly, neither the father nor the daughter addressed the workers at any point reportedly because of security concerns. His vehicle was also provided a security cover by police and even his route was cleared by wardens.

Before the start of the rally, the PML-N local leaders brought two lions — electoral symbol of the PML-N — to greet Mr Sharif, but they had to take them back amid concerns that this might not reflect well on the party’s image as animal rights activists in the past raised strong concerns over bringing animals in political rallies.

During the rally, Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz waved to the charged workers while staying inside the vehicle. The workers chanted slogans to greet the elder Sharif and also held fireworks.

On Mohni Road, Mr Sharif also had some namak paray offered to him by a shopkeeper. Some PML-N leaders also showered currency notes on Mr Sharif’s vehicle.

The areas Nawaz Sharif visited were fully decorated with the party flags, banners and posters.

Mr Sharif has a contest with PTI’s Dr Yasmin Rashid who has been in jail for several months in connection with May 9 riots. Dr Rashid said she would hold a campaign from jail and would make a run to Mr Sharif to win this contest.

Both the party founder and his daughter are scheduled to address a public rally in Nankana Sahib on Wednesday (today).

Taking a jibe at Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan for allegedly failing as prime minister despite tall claims, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supreme leader Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday stated that he is not a leader who forgets his promises and takes U-turns.

Addressing a rally in Nankana Sahib, he said that the country was progressing when he was prime minister but it was halted via a “conspiracy”.

"The motorway from Sukkur would have reached here by now, but our government was ousted through a conspiracy. People should think [before voting], who ended the 18-hour load-shedding? In whose era was sugar 50 rupees per kilo? Vegetables, lentils, flour, and gas were cheaper in whose era,” he questioned.

He credited PML-N for developing Gwadar Airport, bringing peace to Karachi, constructing motorways throughout the country and ran Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses in multiple cities but for such good work, he was handcuffed. “What crime had I committed? It was the crime of bringing prosperity [to the country,” he added.

He questioned, "In whose era was the price of roti increased from four to 20 rupees, sugar from 50 to 150, and the dollar rose from 104 to 275 rupees? Why did all this happen? I was not an imported prime minister; I was a local prime minister, and he [Imran Khan] was an unsuccessful one."

Maryam Nawaz, Chief Organiser of PML-N, during her address, lashed out at Imran Khan without mentioning his name, saying that Nawaz Sharif did not remove him but rather he brought trouble upon himself.

"Nawaz Sharif did not oust you through deceit; there was no conspiracy against you. Instead, you have dug your own pit,” Maryam asserted.

She emphasized that PML-N’s struggle is not against any individual but against inflation. “Our battle is against expensive electricity, gas, sugar, flour, and bread. In every era, Nawaz Sharif provided relief to the people, so on February 8, vote for the PML-N in such numbers that Nawaz Sharif can rescue you from inflation and unemployment,” she added.

She stated, "Yes, Nawaz Sharif is a ladla (darling), but he is the people's ladla. When Nawaz Sharif was not in the competition, then what popularity are we talking about? You used to say we are very popular after removing Nawaz Sharif from the competition. Now that Nawaz Sharif has returned, we will see who is truly popular."

‘Once bitten’ Nawaz hints at ending unceremonious departure of PMs

PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif declared his intention on Wednesday to overhaul the country’s political system that has led to the “unceremonious departure of prime ministers” and questioned the reasons behind his own removal from power ahead of the previous elections.

“Will you tell what enmity you had with me that you ousted me despite the fact that our government overcame loadshedding, controlled inflation and laid a network of motorways in the country?” Mr Sharif asked while addressing a campaign rally in Punjab’s Nankana Sahib district.

“Why was I handcuffed, sent to jail and exiled (to the UK)? I want an answer,” he said. “We will change this whole system and for this I need your support. We will do such works that will be remembered in history.”

This was the third rally Nawaz Sharif addressed since the party launched its election campaign over a week ago.

During his address, Nawaz Sharif contrasted Pakistan’s current state with that during his previous tenure, emphasising the economic challenges the nation is now facing.

“Will anyone tell whether today’s Pakistan is better than that of 2017 when I was ousted? Inflation, currency depreciation and people’s lives were made miserable once my government was sent packing,” he said. “I will find solace once the people get relief from price hikes and have employment.”

He said if his party formed the government after the Feb 8 polls, it would make Nankana Sahib a model city, build a cardiology hospital, give ownership rights to the katchi abadi residents and establish a boys’ degree college in the district.

“What I promise, I will deliver. I don’t take U-turns like others,” he said, apparently referring to Mr Khan.

Mr Sharif said he could not come to Nankana Sahib by helicopter because of fog, but he was happy to arrive there through the motorway. “I built this motorway in 2017. This goes to Multan and Sukkur. This would have been completed from Sukkur to Karachi but ours and the enemies of Pakistan did not give us this opportunity to complete it. But my morale is still high,” he added.

In her address, Maryam Nawaz defended her father against claims of being the establishment’s ladla (blue-eyed), asserting that he is the ladla of the people.

She also criticised Imran Khan without mentioning his name, insisting that no one but the PTI founder was to blame for his ouster in 2022.

Meanwhile, PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif, in a conversation with the youth, stated Pakistan must invest in its youth and formulate policies through consensus.

He said over 60 per cent of the population comprises young people, adding, “We are cognisant of their problems. Our younger generation has excelled in every field. If our party is elected in the elections, we will prioritise higher education.”

Nawaz promises to contain inflation

Deploring the current state of economy, PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif has promised to control inflation, create new jobs, construct new motorways and improve the overall infrastructure if voted to power.

Addressing an election rally in Vehari district’s Burewala town on Friday, the former prime minister lashed out at the previous PTI government for skyrocketing inflation and compared the prices of essential items and tariff of utilities during the PML-N government with those during the Imran Khan-led government.

“Don’t you remember my [last] rule when the prices of essential items were far less than the present day? Roti was available for Rs4, electricity bill of Rs500 is now touching Rs20,000, and farm inputs and machinery are now five times costlier,” Mr Sharif said.

When he asked the participants, especially the youth, to raise hands if they were jobless, almost all of them raised their hands. At this, the three-time former prime minister expressed empathy with the attendants and said, “I love you, but I’m sad to learn that you are unemployed.”

Mr Sharif blamed the former PTI government for unemployment, saying that had his government been allowed to complete its term, no youth would have been unemployed today.

Addressing the rally after his father, PML-N Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced that the party would launch its election manifesto on Saturday (today).

She said the PML-N was committed to providing all facilities and relief to the masses, adding that the rival political parties were befooling people in the name of south Punjab province.

Ms Nawaz claimed that her party had served the people of south Punjab better than other parties and added that her rivals don’t have a single development project of significance to show in Punjab.

She said her father, Mr Sharif, during his tenure developed Multan, Bahawalpur and other cities, along with Lahore.

Ambitious PML-N manifesto sets 6pc GDP growth target

After multiple delays in its release, the PML-N on Saturday published its election manifesto, promising a series of measures to bring down the inflation rate to six per cent and the unemployment rate to five per cent by creating at least 10 million jobs during its five years in power.

The policy document, shared with the media in bullet points, was described as a culmination of three-month-long efforts of over 30 committees of the PML-N. It outlined an ambitious agenda to put the economy on track; for instance, it promised a 20-30 per cent reduction in the price of electricity.

Previously, the pledge to create 10m jobs was made by former prime minister Imran Khan who headed the PTI government from 2018 to 2022, but the promise did not materialise. On the other hand, seemingly in the footsteps of the PPP, the PML-N recently promised 200 free units of electricity to the public after coming to power.

Accordingly, the manifesto said the PML-N government would add 15,000MW to the national grid and implement nationwide 10,000MW solar power initiative, as well as eradicate ever-swelling circular debt. However, the party did not share a concrete plan to rein in this problem.

As far as economic growth is concerned, the PML-N manifesto set a target of six per cent GDP growth, annual exports of $60 billion, and $40bn in yearly remittances from expatriates.

According to the PML-N, it will abolish NAB after coming to power and also restore Article 62 and 63 to their original form.

The manifesto also planned to open evening schools nationwide, establish Daanish schools across Pakistan, increase funding to higher education to 0.5 per cent of the GDP, and establish medical and engineering colleges at the district level. The PML-N also promised free healthcare services for low and middle-income households.

The document also focused on youth, with the former ruling party promising to restore student unions after forming the government, establish a ‘sports university’, and allocate funds for youth-led start-ups and related IT projects. It also promised the youth ample representation in electoral politics, parliament, provincial assemblies, and local governments. However, in the Feb 8 polls, the PML-N has hardly preferred the youth in the award of tickets.

The manifesto also vowed to combat the impacts of climate change and promised a ‘zero-tolerance policy’ towards terrorism. It promised to bring about constitutional, legal, judicial and administrative reforms.

It pledges to make five IT cities and $20bn dollars in IT exports. It includes combating violence against minorities, modernising agriculture and making women independent. The party also vows to introduce a new labour policy to ensure their rights.

Regarding its relationship with India, the policy document said that ties with India cannot be normalised till New Delhi reverses the unilateral measures taken on August 5, 2019, to end the autonomy of Kashmir.

“Relations anchored in mutual respect shared vision for regional stabilities and economic growth,” the document said, adding that the PML-N intended to focus on energy and trade with Russia for regional peace and prosperity.

It also intends to enhance economic and energy ties and cross-border trade with Iran. For Afghanistan, it has said it would like to work together for peace, enhance trade and infrastructure connectivity, and ensure effective border management.

For the US, the PML-N stresses a vital position in Pakistan’s foreign policy. It said it would work together in peace, counter-terrorism, economy, trade, health, education, IT, and climate change.

‘Focus on economy’

Speaking about the election document, PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif said if the people elected his party in the Feb 8 polls he “would try to implement the manifesto with a main focus on the economy”.

Mr Sharif regretted that his party should not have let Imran Khan form government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2013, saying he made a mistake by not “nipping evil in the bud”.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif lashed out at the previous PTI government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), ARY News reported.

Addressing a public gathering in Swat, Nawaz Sharif criticized the PTI government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa saying that Imran Khan made fake promises to the people of Swat and did not deliver in KP.

He questioned why the PTI founder was allowed to destroy the country’s economy, saying that if PML-N had been in power in KP they would have changed the shape of the province.

The PML-N supremo said that Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday castigated PTI founder Imran Khan for ‘attacking’ Pakistan’s integrity to save his rule, saying that he never compromised national security despite being “subjugated”.

“He [Imran Khan] hatched conspiracy and compromised the national security by revealing state’s secrets,” Nawaz Sharif said, adding that he “attacked” the country’s integrity to save his rule.

Meanwhile, Nawaz Sharif pointed out that his government had controlled inflation, fuel rates, load shedding, the US dollar fluctuations and got rid of International Monetary Fund (IMF). “On the other hand, the former PTI government kept begging before foreign countries,” he claimed.

Former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supreme leader Nawaz Sharif on Thursday took a swipe at Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan without directly naming him, questioning the fulfilment of the promises made by Imran during his tenure in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) and accused him of deceiving the people.

Addressing a spirited crowd during a rally in Swat, Nawaz questioned the efficacy of Imran’s pledge to generate 10 million jobs and provide five million houses.

“Raise your hands and tell me how many people here got one of the five million houses,” he challenged the audience, highlighting the alleged failure of the promises made by Imran’s government.

“The people of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa are very simple people; are you (Imran Khan) not ashamed of deceiving them? Why were false promises made to the public? You secured votes by playing with people’s emotions; later, they were neither given jobs nor any relief,” Nawaz asserted, criticising the credibility of the commitments made by the PTI founder.

The PML-N supremo went on to express his scepticism about the success of the ‘billion-tree tsunami’ project, a cornerstone initiative of Imran’s government.

“I have come looking the whole way, but I did not see any ‘one billion tree tsunami’. He played with your emotions and took your vote, and later neither gave you a job nor any relief… in the process, you destroyed the old Pakistan as well,” Nawaz remarked, referencing Imran’s slogan of building a new Pakistan.

The PML-N supremo took pride in his own government’s accomplishments, emphasising that his administration ended electricity load shedding in Pakistan. He questioned the wisdom of the people in K-P for supporting Imran despite the achievements of his government.

“If there was Nawaz Sharif’s government here, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa would have been the most beautiful province.

In an apparent jibe at Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif on Friday asserted that the country’s real youth stand by his party, not mummy-daddy type, ARY News reported.

Addressing a public gathering in Faisalabad in connection with general elections 2024, the three-time prime minister said that some people believe the country’s youth support another party, but “that’s not the case”.

“The real Pakistani youth stand by PML-N, not the mummy-daddy ones,” Nawaz Sharif, said, adding that he has no words to “thank the people of Faisalabad for this love”.

The PML-N supremo pledged Orange Line and employment for people of Faisalabad, asking how much jobs were provided by the person who pledged 10 million – referring to PTI founder Imran Khan.

He directed PML-N president that no one should be unemployed in Faisalabad after five-year term. “We will bring back the era when bread was available at Rs4 and petrol at Rs65 a litre,” he vowed.

The former premier said if he was not ousted in 2017, then fewer people would not be unemployed. “I don’t make false promises, I’m not the person who promised 5 million homes and didn’t deliver,” he added.

Nawaz Sharif is the PML-N’s candidate for prime minister as he has secured relief from court in multiple cases and following a Supreme Court judgment, he is also no longer disqualified from holding office.

On Wednesday, PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif castigated PTI founder Imran Khan for ‘attacking’ Pakistan’s integrity to save his rule, saying that he never compromised national security despite being “subjugated”.

Addressing a public gathering in Haroonabad, the PML-N supremo noted that he had neither compromised the national security nor revealed any state secret to save his rulership – referring to PTI founder’s cipher controversy.

“He [Imran Khan] hatched conspiracy and compromised the national security by revealing state’s secret,” Nawaz Sharif said, adding that he “attacked” the country’s integrity to save his rule.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif said on Saturday that the previous government had ended the projects, which were initiated by three-time prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

Addressing the public gathering in Gujranwala, Shehbaz said: "During the tenure of Nawaz Sharif, corruption witnessed a decline. Nawaz Sharif had established the medical college in Gujranwala."

"Nawaz Sharif had given laptops to the children of Gujranwala," he said.

Taking an indirect jibe at the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), he said, "In 2018, when Nawaz Sharif's government was toppled, the next government had declared everybody as thieves."

He also took an indirect swipe at the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), saying, "They are talking about debate, but I would rather ask them [PPP] to do a comparison with us."

Recalling the tenure of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), Shehbaz said, "The risk of country default was averted during the 16-month period."

Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif promised a train service starting from Islamabad to Murree and Muzaffarabad after coming into power, ARY News reported.

Addressing a public gathering in Murree today, he said the youth are standing by his party. Pakistan has always stood by the people of Indian illegally Jammu and Kashmir, he added.

The former prime minister said that PML-N will rebuild Pakistan again as the PTI government did not fulfilled their promises and did nothing for Pakistan.

PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif pledged earlier in his Gujranwala Public gathering to eliminate poverty and unemployment in the country if he secures victory in the upcoming Feb 8 general elections.

The three-time prime minister noted that if his government had not been ousted, not a single person here would have been unemployed.

Citing Transparency International’s report, Nawaz Sharif said Pakistan’s ranking on graft index improved under Nawaz Sharif-led government. “Not only corruption, the price of bread, flour and sugar were also at the lowest”, he reiterated.

Nawaz further said that the judge, who was in line to become new Chief Justice and awarded him sentence, resigned and went home. “That judge was involved in my ouster,” he added.

“Had my government remained, people would have been satisfied; they would have been able to make ends meet, unlike today,” the PML-N supremo maintained.

In a curious twist of events, Nawaz Sharif and his family will not be able to put their stamps on their party’s tiger symbol.

Nawaz’s votes, as well as the votes of his children Hassan and Hussain are registered in Lahore’s NA-128.

The votes of his brother Shehbaz Sharif and his wife are also registered in the same constituency.

However, the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz has agreed on a seat-adjustment formula that will lend the party’s support in the constituency to the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party.

Therefore, Nawaz and family will be forced to stamp IPP’s symbol, eagle, from their home constituency.

IPP has fielded Awn Chaudhry as its candidate in NA-128 and a tough contest is expected between him and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf candidate Salman Akram Raja.

In Murree, elder Sharif promises yet more uplift

With only two days left in general elections, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif after a decade arrived in Murree to address an election gathering in which he promised a number of development projects, including a motorway and railways track.

Speaking to the gathering at the GPO Chowk, the PML-N supreme leader said Murree is his second home and he had been visiting the hill station since 1956 when he came to the city for the first time at the age of 6.

Mr Sharif said he had spent more time in Murree than in Lahore and added that he had an immense love for the people of Murree. “I love you more than you love me,” Mr Sharif told the participants.

He recounted the achievements of his government and said the PML-N ended load-shedding, decreased power tariffs, and provided cheap essentials by reining in inflation during its tenure. He claimed that with his ouster, the journey of development had come to a halt.

The elder Sharif said a judge who had disqualified him from parliament had resigned from the Supreme Court only eight months before he was all set to become the chief justice of the country. Mr Sharif claimed there was something fishy about the judge that was why he stepped down.

He added that he had been barred from contesting elections but “here I am” at this election rally.

‘Imran’s broken promises’

He also took potshots at his chief rival Imran Khan, saying the former premier had promised 10 million jobs, but those employment promises never materialised.

He also criticised the PTI leader for allegedly lying about the billion tree tsunami project and wasting money on this scheme. Similarly, he also called out Imran Khan for his failure to build the millions of houses he had promised.

Flanked by young Usama Ashfaq who is contesting polls from NA-51, Mr Sharif said the youth of the country was standing with the PML-N. “Imran Khan says that the youth is with him, but look at this, the youth is standing with me,” he said in a lighter vein, referring to Usama.

Mr Sharif said people of the area had asked him to build a school, hospital, and a university in the area, as well as roads.

He, however, said he had plans to build a motorway that would encircle the hill station as well as lay a railway track from Rawalpindi to Murree, which will be extended to Azad Jammu Kashmir’s capital Muzaffarabad.

He said on the eve of the Kashmir Solidarity Day, he and his party stood by the Kashmiris.

Before he asked Maryam Nawaz Sharif to address the gathering, the former premier said this was the first time that a large number of women had attended his gathering and also thanked them for their support.

He urged the voters to vote responsibly as their decision can alter the destiny of coming generations. He told them to stamp the ‘tiger’ on Feb 8 and become part of development and progress.

Ms Sharif, the PML-N chief organiser, said that PML-N was the symbol of development and it would work hard to improve the living standards of the masses. “We promise development in Murree if the city chooses ‘tiger’,” she said.

Nawaz seeks heavy mandate to stop return of ‘fraudsters’

Nawaz Sharif, the supreme leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has stated that had his government not been ousted, the country would presently be on a trajectory of progress, asserting that “fraudsters” should not be allowed to return to power as they have disgraced Pakistan.

"If my government had not been removed, no youth in the entire country would be unemployed. Everyone would have dignified employment. I say this with confidence and assert that had Nawaz Sharif's tenure continued, there would be no unemployment in Pakistan,” he said while addressing a rally in Kasur on the last day of election campaigns across the country.

The former prime minister outlined plans for Pakistan's future, including providing solar panels to farmers, laptops to the youth, and vocational training alongside employment opportunities.

"We have faced many setbacks, but we must overcome these hurdles and challenges, then join the race of progress, and become Asian tiger again. This enthusiasm will bring about a revolution in Pakistan and change its destiny,” he added.

Nawaz said that Pakistan was on the path of progress under his leadership. “During my tenure, Pakistan experienced prosperity. We were busy ending load-shedding, constructing motorways, providing cheap gas and electricity to the people. We were busy eradicating terrorism and facilitating farmers. Meanwhile, they (PTI) were busy in staging sit-ins,” he added.

“In our time, a tractor could be purchased for 800,000 rupees, and today it costs 3.8 million rupees. So, whose era was better?"

"While the elections are scheduled for the 8th, today feels like a celebration. The youth are present in large numbers, symbolising the nation's strength. Even those with white beards are young. We are all youthful,” he concluded.

Nawaz Sharif wants majority from voters, rules out coalition govt idea

Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif—who has been termed as the king of a comeback by BBC—cast his vote at Government Junior Model High School Model Town, Lahore at NA-128.

Nawaz Sharif talking to a media person after casting his vote urged people to leave their homes. He vowed PML-N will combat the culture of “abuse” and indecency, adding that the party will also combat inflation and work for the people.

Nawaz Sharif categorically said: “Don't mention the name of the coalition government. One party should get a full mandate.”

“There is no doubt in Maryam's struggle,” Nawaz Sharif commented on the political struggle of the PMLN Chief Organizer Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

“We are seeing this day today by making sacrifices,” Nawaz Sharif highlighted his political struggle during his self-exile period in London.

Nawaz Sharif faces shock defeat to independent candidate in Mansehra

In a surprising turn of events during the 2024 general elections, Nawaz Sharif, the prime ministerial candidate and leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), faced a significant defeat against independent candidate Shahzada Gastasap in NA-15 Mansehra.

Unofficial reports from National Assembly Constituency NA-15 Mansehra revealed that Shahzada Gastasap secured victory with 74,713 votes, while Mian Nawaz Sharif garnered 63,054 votes.

This unexpected outcome marks a major upset in the electoral landscape, raising questions about the prevailing political dynamics in Mansehra. Despite his defeat in NA-15, Nawaz Sharif remains a candidate in NA-130 constituency in Lahore, where he faces independent candidate Yasmin Rashid.

As the electoral process unfolds, the defeat in Mansehra adds an element of uncertainty to Nawaz Sharif's political journey and underscores the unpredictability of the ongoing elections.

PML-N's Nawaz Sharif challenges NA-15 Mansehra election result

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Supremo Nawaz Sharif lodged on Saturday formally challenged the election result of National Assembly constituency NA-15 Mansehra.

It is pertinent to mention that independent candidate Shehzad Muhammad Gashtasab Khan emerged victorious, securing 105,249 votes, as per the unofficial tally released by the Returning Officer/Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

Nawaz Sharif trailed behind with 80,382 votes, according to the same unofficial count. Meanwhile, the voter turnout for NA-15 Mansehra/Torghar remained at 38.38 percent.

In an application filed with the Election Commission, Nawaz Sharif highlighted the logistical difficulties faced by many areas in Mansehra due to severe snowfall, leading to communication disruptions during the crucial election process.

Consequently, he asserted that the outcome of NA-15 should be withheld until the matter is thoroughly investigated and resolved.

When Nawaz Sharif, the three-time former prime minister, emerged on the balcony of his party’s headquarters in Lahore on Friday night, fireworks went off as he was given a rousing welcome by the crowd of nearly 1,500 people.

Sharif started out with what has now become the staple of his public addresses, asking the crowd of his Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) supporters, “Do you love me?”. The response, “We love you!”, echoed among his adoring audience.

Yet, more than three days after Pakistan voted in general elections, there is little evidence that the sentiment of Sharif’s core supporters is shared by the wider public in the nation of 241 million people that stunned analysts in their voting patterns on February 8.

For weeks before the elections, the PMLN was viewed by experts as the favourite to secure a clear victory that would give the 74-year-old political veteran another chance to rule Pakistan. Once targeted by Pakistan’s military establishment, Sharif appeared to have won the favour of the generals for the 2024 vote.

So confident were Sharif and the PMLN of their win that they had scheduled a victory speech from their leader for Thursday night, barely hours after polls closed. Then, the results started coming in, and the bubble was burst.

“As the voting patterns emerged, it shocked and surprised the party, forcing a rethink which is why they were in complete silent mode for nearly 12 hours,” said Majid Nizami, a political analyst, and a specialist on elections.

When Sharif finally addressed supporters on Friday, he claimed victory, but acknowledged that his party had failed to secure a simple majority and so would need coalition partners to form a government.

“This was not the result the party was expecting. They thought they would achieve more than 85 percent of seats from Punjab province, but initial trends showed they were barely getting 50 percent of seats,” Lahore-based Nizami told Al Jazeera.

Almost all of the remaining seats in Punjab, the bastion of Sharif’s PMLN, went to candidates backed by former PM Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) — a party that experts believed had been decimated by targeted political and legal attacks in recent months.

As the dust settles on the election results, the PMLN has emerged with 75 seats in the national assembly, trailing PTI-backed independent candidates by 20 seats.

The PTI alleges widespread manipulation and tampering, insisting that it has been denied a far larger majority and that their mandate has been “stolen” to benefit Sharif and his PMLN.

So, what happened to the PMLN, a party that, as late as early 2022, was leading opinion polls in popularity over PTI and was considered the strongest party in Punjab, Pakistan’s most populous and electorally important province?

For Lahore-based political analyst and editor Badar Alam, the roots of PMLN’s disappointing performance in the polls can be traced back to April 2022 when Imran Khan, the PTI chief, and then-prime minister were ousted through a parliamentary vote of no-confidence.

At the time, Sharif was in self-imposed exile in the United Kingdom, after a series of corruption-related convictions. His party allied with the country’s other traditional political force, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and others under what was called the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), to topple Khan’s government.

They succeeded. But, said Alam, “once Shehbaz Sharif, Nawaz’s younger brother, took over as prime minister, his attention went towards removing all the cases and convictions against his elder brother.”

These are cases that have haunted the Sharif brothers for three decades. The elder Sharif, who ruled the country twice in the 1990s, has been dogged by corruption allegations since then. In 1999, he was ousted in a military coup. His third term in power, after the PMLN won the 2013 elections, was marked by intensifying rivalry with Khan, who eventually won the 2018 election, backed at the time by Pakistan’s powerful military establishment that has ruled the country directly for more than three decades and has influenced politics from behind the scenes for much of the rest of the country’s existence.

Yet, since relations between Khan and the military soured, and he was ousted in 2022 — with the military now seemingly backing the PDM government — Pakistan has been through torrid political, economic and security crises.

Salman Ghani, a political analyst who has been covering the PMLN for a long time, said that as the leading party of the PDM, the decisions of that government hung heavy around the Sharif brothers’ necks.

“The 16-month rule of PDM caused almost irreversible damage to the PMLN. The tenure saw massive inflation, hitting the public everywhere, including their own vote bank,” Ghani told Al Jazeera. “Theirs is a party of development and the economy; people support them for delivery, not for ideology. That perception was destroyed in that time.”

Pakistan was on the verge of defaulting on loans last year, with its foreign reserves depleting to less than $4 billion dollars, and its rupee depreciating rapidly against the US dollar. A $3 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund helped stave off a default temporarily.

Sharif returned home from his exile three months before the elections. Many analysts believe that Sharif’s return and the subsequent change in his legal fortunes — with convictions against him dropped and restrictions against contesting elections removed — were made possible only because the military had decided to back him in the 2024 vote.

Meanwhile, Khan has been charged in more than 100 cases; was jailed in August and barred from contesting in the elections; and was sentenced in three separate cases just the week before the February 8 polls.

His party faced a crackdown — senior party officials were arrested, many were apparently coerced to leave his movement, and the PTI was barred from even using its election symbol, the cricket bat, in the elections. Its candidates were forced to contest as independents.

But the PTI wasn’t the only party that suffered. The PMLN and the military, seen by many ordinary Pakistanis as being behind the crackdown, made the mistake of underestimate popular support for Khan, said Ghani.

“When a person is oppressed, their support increases massively. We saw that in the case of Nawaz Sharif himself. Those who are pushed against the wall, they are the ones to retaliate the most. PMLN did not understand this,” he added.

Alam, the Lahore-based analyst agreed.

“Not even once did they [the PMLN] condemn the violence and persecution of the PTI; in fact, they played their part in fully subjugating them. This made PMLN a victimiser, resulting in public anger against them,” he said.

A party leader acknowledged that the PMLN had been blindsided by the recent election results.

“PMLN is on the defensive; Nawaz Sharif is on the defensive,” he told Al Jazeera on condition of anonymity.

The insider also blamed “sycophants” within the party, whom he accused on focusing on their own interests, for the PMLN’s failure to adapt its messaging as public opinion started to swing against it.

“Nawaz Sharif used to be very adept at handling media himself, but now that isn’t the case,” he said.

While the PMLN supremo, in his speech on Friday, did name other parties the PMLN might seek alliances with to form a government, he did not mention the PTI.

Alam said that PMLN and Nawaz Sharif must show some “grace”.

“PMLN came in as a party that was a government-in-waiting. PTI and Khan were in survival mode, but they upset the predictions. The country is in crisis, and it is imperative for Sharif, if he thinks he is a statesman, to concede and ask PTI to form a government,” Alam said.

Lahore-based Ghani said that the election risked compounding the country’s political, economic, and security challenges.

“Countries, when they hold elections, their objective is to bring stability. Democracy functions when it holds elections, and a mandate is earned. In our country, the election result is causing further instability,” he added.

Ghani said that Sharif, in his Friday speech, ought to have acknowledged the support of voters for Khan and the PTI, and indicated a willingness to “reach out to them”.

But what about the party’s own support base and future? It’s not looking very good for the PMLN, said Nizami, the analyst.

“Their strength and hegemony were in central Punjab area, from where they used to sweep the number of seats. It was unthinkable for them to lose votes. Yet, they have been losing ground to PTI and are unable to stop the rot,” he said.

“They have much to ponder now.”

The pre-results celebration by Nawaz Sharif has cost him, and people believe he is pro-establishment.

Everything PMLN has done after the no-confidence vote has cost them their popularity. Their "vote ko Izzat do" slogan, their mishandling of the economy and the country in general during the PDM period, Imran getting shot and jailed, their alliance with PPP, their behavior after the election, and many more factors have completely destroyed their voter base.

If elections were to be conducted again right now, they'd lose by an even bigger margin. My Lahori family members who have been supporting PML-N for the past 30 years are cursing at them now, the situation is dire. I'm hearing that PML-N is going to be sacrificing more positions to PPP now compared to the PDM era since PPP has more influence now.

If things keep trending in this direction, our "prodigal son" might not make it through the next election cycle. If PML-N as a party dies then good riddance, they had it coming.

The pre-results celebration by Nawaz Sharif has cost him, and people believe he is pro-establishment.
The game was over way before. People realised and have been proved right by events in the last week that these guys are thugs. After 45 years in politics this pathetic ganja had to have a cancer locked up for 9 months so that she couldn't compete against him and she still beat him. I think you and your ilk don't get it. I just come back from a wedding and the amount of abuse for NS and Munir was unprecedented. Its all anyone talked about.

The pre-results celebration by Nawaz Sharif has cost him, and people believe he is pro-establishment.
I think Shahbaz Sharif's 1.5 years of governance in the alliance of PDM actually costed him that even the establishment couldn't save them.

Maryam Nawaz, Chief Organiser of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has refuted claims about former prime minister Nawaz Sharif stepping away from politics, stating there is no truth to the speculation.

Taking to X, Maryam posted, "If not accepting the prime minister’s position creating an impression that Nawaz Sharif is distancing himself from politics. There is no truth to that."

She asserted that in the next five years, the PML-N supremo not only plans to actively participate in politics but also aims to supervise government affairs both at the Centre and in Punjab.

Explaining Nawaz’s decision not to become the prime minister, she said that PML-N had a clear majority during his father’s three terms.

“He (Nawaz) had even said during his speeches [before elections] that he would not become part of a coalition government. Those familiar with Nawaz Sharif's principles would understand his stance,” she added.

Furthermore, she affirmed, "Shehbaz Sharif and I are his soldiers, bound by his command. We will work under his leadership and supervision. May Allah grant us success. Ameen."

For years, PML-N and its leaders have been shouting slogans of “Wazeer-e-Azam, Nawaz Sharif” – PM [would be] Nawaz Sharif. Even, when Shehbaz was the prime minister and during the election campaign, the party projected Nawaz as the next prime minister if PML-N comes to power.

However, it seems, the split mandate and the last-minute adjustments left him with no other option but to nominate his brother assume a new role for himself: the person who nominates people on key positions.

“Nawaz Sharif will assist both Shehbaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz,” Marriyum Aurangzeb, PML-N spokesperson, shared with The Express Tribune, adding, “He will help both in their jobs.”

To a question if the jailed PTI founding chairman, Imran Khan, just ended Nawaz’s political career by forcing him to change plans seeing the split mandate in the polls, Marriyum refuted by saying that it is Nawaz, who is still nominating people on the premium and most powerful positions in the country.

“Nawaz Sharif is very much playing on the front foot,” Marriyum said in response to a question if he would continue playing his political role from behind the scene.

Soon after the PML-N decided that Shehbaz and Maryam would lead the federal and Punjab governments, the social media was abuzz with questions if Nawaz’s political career was finally over. To the question if Nawaz was eying the office of President for himself, Marriyum replied in negative.

Upcoming govt to bring stability by solving economic crisis, says Nawaz

Former premier Nawaz Sharif has said that the upcoming government’s first priority will be to solve the country’s economic crisis, adding that all the problems plaguing Pakistan were linked to the economy.

The PML-N supremo passed these remarks as he reached the Parliament House. “God willingly the government will try to fix the economy which would in turn fix everything,” Nawaz told media persons.

In response to a question, he also hoped that the upcoming prime minister and all the assemblies will complete their term.

PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif says his younger brother Shehbaz is the best choice for the prime ministership, especially in the current circumstances Pakistan is in.

He lauded Shehbaz’s performance as the PM during the tenure of the Pakistan Democratic Movement. “The way he stopped the country from defaulting is unprecedented,” Nawaz said.

He further expressed hope that Pakistan would emerge out of the current crises in the next one or two years.

“Pakistan is very injured at this time and we will have to fill its wounds,” Nawaz said. “We will have to take the country out of these difficulties and I believe that we will have to make difficult decisions in the next two years […] but if your intention is pure then God will surely help you.

“We have to give ease to the public, we have to fix the prices of electricity and gas, we have to make Pakistan stand on its feet and if you move forward with a well-thought agenda then this journey will become easy,” Nawaz said.

The PML-N supremo then declared Shehbaz as the party’s candidate for premier.

Three-time prime minister Nawaz Sharif held a meeting with Maulana Fazlur Rehman at the latter’s residence. The meeting was also attended by a number of PML-N leaders including Rana Sanaullah, Ishaq Dar and Ahsan Iqbal.

The meeting comes ahead of the key election of the prime minister, which is set to be held on Sunday. It must be noted that Fazl has refused to be a part of the coalition government and expressed reservations on the results of the Feb 8 general elections.

During the meeting today, sources told ARY News that, Maulana Fazlur Rahman once again refused to be part of the coalition government. Sources quoting Fazl said he refused to make promises immediately and decided to consult the party members.

Punjab govt to provide highest protocol to PMLN supremo Nawaz Sharif

PML-N-led Punjab government decided to give the highest protocol to Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leader Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif.

Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif served the country as prime minister three times and has been patronizing his party.

Nawaz Sharif returned to the country after self-imposed exile in London and now his sentence has been overturned by the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

Earlier, former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Supremo Nawaz Sharif in his first-ever address to the public upon arriving in Lahore said he arrived in Pakistan not for revenge but for progress.

Addressing the charged crowd at Minar-e-Pakistan, he expressed his unwavering commitment to serving the people of Pakistan. He shared his experiences of facing imprisonment, deportations, and false allegations but affirmed his dedication to public service whenever the opportunity arose.

Sharif also acknowledged the support and love he received from the people, emphasizing that he never harmed them and worked tirelessly to address their issues. He expressed his deep affection for the warm reception he received and highlighted the enduring nature of this relationship.

The former prime minister reflecting on the unforgettable sorrows, stated that he preferred not to dwell on past miseries. He expressed how the love and warmth of the people had the power to make him forget his pain and sorrow.

He underlined his role in nation-building, including Pakistan's nuclear program. He questioned why there was a pattern of separating him from the nation every few years.

Nawaz concerned over IMF's electric shock

PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif on Monday raised concerns over the impending surge in electricity and gas prices under the directives of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), questioning the extent to which the people could bear such burdens.

Addressing a special meeting of the Punjab government alongside Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Nawaz Sharif stressed the pressing need to address the potential hike in utility prices imposed by the global lender.

Senior provincial ministers and officials were in attendance, including Marriyum Aurangzeb, Azma Bukhari, Bilal Yasin, Syed Ashiq, and Sania Ashiq, along with chief secretaries and other concerned authorities.

During the briefing, it was revealed that previous procurement methods subsidised wheat prices uniformly, benefiting both the impoverished and the rich alike.

However, mounting circular debts, now totalling Rs630 billion, posed a grave challenge to the government. If left unaddressed, experts warned the debt could soar to a staggering Rs1.1 trillion.

Meanwhile, the daily interest payment on loans alone amounted to a staggering 250 million, prompting the government to abolish general wheat subsidies.

The meeting resolved in principle to provide solar panels to farmers for tube wells in a move aimed at alleviating the burden of expensive electricity.

Nawaz Sharif reiterated the need to prioritise farmers' concerns, stressing that government funds should be dedicated to supporting agricultural initiatives. He also emphasised the importance of ensuring fair compensation for farmers' labour and shielding them from exploitation by middlemen.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of providing farmers with modern machinery and reviewing drip irrigation techniques.

She called for a comprehensive strategy to combat the mafia engaged in the sale of overpriced fertilisers to safeguard agricultural interests.

It is pertinent to note that Nawaz's coincide with the anticipated finalisation of a staff-level agreement. Reports suggested that Pakistan has pledged to implement timely escalations in electricity and gas tariffs, along with the elimination of tax privileges.

According to the reports, electricity rates are slated for another hike starting July 1st. Additionally, mechanisms will be established for periodic adjustments on a monthly, quarterly, and yearly basis to facilitate cost recovery.

Nawaz’s sons acquitted in all three Panama Papers references

An Islamabad accountability court on Tuesday acquitted former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s sons — Hussain Nawaz and Hassan Nawaz — in three corruption references related to the Panama Papers.

In 2018, Nawaz’s sons were declared proclaimed offenders after they failed to join the investigation in Avenfield Apartment, Al-Azizia and Flagship Investment references filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Earlier this month, Hussain and Hassan, through their counsel Qazi Misbahul Hassan, decided to surrender before the court to face the trial proceedings and sought suspension of the warrants issued against them.

After an accountability court suspended their warrants till March 14, both returned to Pakistan on March 12, ending their six-year-long self-imposed exile in London.

Last week, the court reopened the references against Hussain and Hassan after suspending their perpetual arrest warrants and granting them bail against surety bonds of Rs50,000 each.

Accountability judge Nasir Javed Rana announced the verdict today that was reserved earlier in the day, accepting the acquittal pleas.

Qazi Misbah appeared as the counsel for Hussain and Hassan while their pleader Rana Mohammad Irfan was also present. The NAB, represented by its prosecutor Azhar Maqbool, did not oppose the acquittal pleas.

Hussain and Hassan Nawaz left the country in 2018 after they were named in the corruption cases. They were declared proclaimed offenders for not joining the investigation and court proceedings, and subsequently, their arrest warrants were issued.

The PML-N had kept their return a “low-key” affair as the media was not informed about it. Both had landed at the Lahore airport from London and were escorted to their Jati Umra residence under tight security of the Punjab police.

They already know this verdict before they landed in Pakistan. I don't think, such verdict could be possible without PML (N) being in Power.
