Astonishing Tanvir leads Amazon Warriors to huge win

2017 Hero Caribbean Premier League - Match Report 25

Guyana Amazon Warriors 158-6 (Mohammad 42, Fudadin 27, Hosein 2-19) beat Barbados Tridents 59 (Hosein 17, Tanvir 5-3, Rashid 3-15) by 99 runs

One of the all-time great spells of T20 bowling from Sohail Tanvir propelled the Guyana Amazon Warriors to a huge 99 run victory over Barbados Tridents in Match 25 of the 2017 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Defending 159 Tanvir removed Kane Williamson, Dwayne Smith, Eoin Morgan and Kieron Pollard in a scintillating spell of swing bowling which left the Tridents 13-5. They were bowled out for 59 in just 13.4 overs, the second lowest Hero CPL total of all time. Tanvir finished with 5 for 3 - the second-best figures in the history of domestic T20 in the Caribbean.

Bowling from over the wicket, Tanvir immediately found swing across the bat and beat Williamson four times in a row before a thick edge flew to third man. In his next over Smith’s outside edge was found with a delivery similar to those that beat Williamson’s. The Amazon Warriors promoted Akeal Hosein and Imran Khan to three and four. In the fourth over Khan was caught looking to attack Roshon Primus who was bowling from the other end, leaving the score 13-3.

It was in Tanvir’s third over that his spell was transformed from good to great. First he trapped the left-handed Morgan leg before wicket for a first ball duck with a ball that jagged sharply in off the pitch and then the very next ball he induced an edge from Pollard outside off stump. Tanvir couldn’t take a hat-trick but his spell of 3-1-2-4 had gutted the Tridents top-order.

When the players returned following a brief rain delay, the Tridents’ last hope, Nicolas Pooran, picked out long off against Rashid Khan, leaving the Tridents 31 for 6. The Tridents lower order mounted little resistance. Rashid finished with 3 for 15 from 3.4 overs and Tanvir had time to return and collect his five-wicket haul with his final delivery, finishing with astonishing figures of 4-1-3-5.

Earlier in the evening after being put into bat by the Tridents, the Amazon Warriors started aggressively but found themselves in trouble at 30 for 2 after 3.4 overs with both Tanvir and Chadwick Walton caught in the deep. Luke Ronchi was unperturbed by the early wickets though and blitzed a quick-fire 24 from just 13 balls to take them to 68 for 2 at the end of the Powerplay.

The introduction of spin slowed the Amazon Warriors, who lost Ronchi to the second ball of the seventh over, bowled by a Khan googly and in the eighth over Gajanand Singh also departed as a top-edge sweep off Hosein was caught at point.

After a brief rain delay the Amazon Warriors struggled to get their innings moving with one over of 15 off Pollard a lone bright spot. Otherwise the spin of Khan and Hosein tied them down. Together they took 3 for 38 from their eight overs. Assad Fudadin fell in the 15th over for battling 27 off 28.

The Amazon Warriors finally got moving in the eighteenth over when Ravi Rampaul was taken for 15 by Jason Mohammad who edged two boundaries behind the wicket and nailed a straight six before being caught attempting to hit a second. Two big sixes from Primus off Wahab Riaz in the 19th and a last ball four off Wayne Parnell lifted the Amazon Warriors to 158 for 8.

so which Pakistani players are back and will play in rest of tournament

i see some sides roped in replacements so perhaps not all Pak players will return it seems?

May be time to consider him for ODIs if he is fit. :smith

4-0-15-0 for Hafeez. :moha

A letdown after yesterday, but then again, Sohail sets the bar too high for others to be able to replicate it tbh....

Mohammad Sami 3-0-30-2

Not great figures on paper but he got Lewis and Thomas who were both looking pretty dangerous.

Thomas fires Tallawahs to victory

2017 Hero Caribbean Premier League - Match Report 26

Jamaica Tallawahs 157-7 (Sangakkara 69, Powell 43, Cottrell 2-38) beat St Kitts and Nevis Patriots 116 (Lewis 40, Thomas 3-31, Santokie 3-10)

A superb spell of fast bowling from 20 year old Oshane Thomas led Jamaica Tallawahs to a 41 run victory against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in Match 26 of the 2017 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Thomas dismissed key batsmen Chris Gayle, Carlos Brathwaite and Mohammad Nabi in four hostile overs that ensured the Tallawahs defended 158 which guarantees their qualification for the Play Off stage.

The Patriots run-chase got off to the worst possible start when Gayle was trapped lbw for a three-ball duck offering no shot to an in-swinger from Thomas who bowled a fiery opening over. Evin Lewis was not phased however, and despite taking a blow to the head in that first over he blitzed an astonishing 40 off just 17 balls, of which 38 came in boundaries. Devon Thomas struck 14 off the last three balls of the PowerPlay to lift the Patriots to 59 for 2 after six overs.

The Patriots continued to bat positively but before the halfway point of the innings they'd lost two more wickets to excellent catches: Thomas edging Mohammad Sami to Sangakkara’s right and Jonathan Carter cutting Kesrick Williams to a diving Jonathan Foo at backward point. After the drinks break Carlos Brathwaite was also dismissed when he too was caught brilliantly at backward point by Trevon Griffith off Thomas, leaving the Patriots 87 for 5 and their hopes resting on Nabi and Mohammad Hafeez.

Having dismissed Gayle and Brathwaite, Thomas claimed his third crucial wicket in his last over when he snared Nabi caught and bowled as he rushed him with another quick short ball. The Patriots last hopes were extinguished when Krishmar Santokie took two wickets in two balls: Hafeez superbly caught by Foo at long off and Ben Hilfenhaus was flummoxed by a low-arm slower ball. The Patriots were eventually dismissed for 116 after another good piece of fielding brought a run out and Santokie took his third wicket to finish with remarkable figures of 3 for 10 from 3.5 overs.

Earlier in the evening after being put into bat the Tallawahs lost Lendl Simmons to the first ball of the innings - brilliantly bowled by left-armer Sheldon Cottrell from over the wicket. The Patriots kept the pairing of Glenn Phillips and Sangakkara quiet for the first four overs before Sangakkara plundered 24 from the fifth over from Hilfenhaus. A tight sixth over meant the Tallawahs only scored 43 for 1 off their Powerplay.

In the middle overs the Patriots employed their spin bowlers Hafeez, Nabi, Tabraiz Shamsi and Samuel Badree to great effect. A scratchy innings from Phillips in which he consistently struggled to sweep the spinners was ended in the twelfth over when he failed to spot Nabi holding his pace and length back and was caught on the boundary. When Andre McCarthy was dismissed in the next over, pulling a long-hop from Shamsi straight to a fielder, the Tallawahs innings looked in strife at 91 for 3 after 12.6.

That they lifted themselves to 157 for 5 was thanks largely to Sangakkara, whose steady 69 off 55 balls anchored the innings before Rovman Powell’s explosive 43 off 26 balls provided the late acceleration, including consecutive sixes in the last over.

After going for 18 runs from the first ball of the 1st over and then taking Lewis on the last one defined what sports is all about!

Nice. Movement as well. Very raw though. Will take a few years.

This is the difference between Pakistan and Windies. Even at their lowest, they're capable of identifying the best upcoming talent while we keep rotating bums like Anwar, Rumman, Gul(past it). Let the young pacers come through FGS.

I just saw some more of his spell and he was really rushing the batsmen at times and generating a lot of bounce.

Barbados Tridents 195-5 (Smith 103*, Pooran 32, Cornwall 2-30) beat St Lucia Stars 166-4 (Cornwall 78 retired, Wahab 1-15, Pollard 1-22)

A second century of the season for Dwayne Smith set up a crucial 29 run victory for the Barbados Tridents against St Lucia Stars in Match 27 of the 2017 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL). The victory keeps the Tridents in the hunt for a finals week spot and ensures the Stars end their season without a win.

After winning the toss the Tridents promoted Nicholas Pooran to open the batting for only the third time in his T20 career and he justified their decision in an explosive 20-ball 36. While Dwayne Smith struggled for fluency early on Pooran’s power and timing was on full display as he struck two sixes and four fours. When he was dismissed with two balls remaining in the Powerplay—duped by a well disguised slower ball from Obed McCoy—he had scored more than 80% of the Tridents runs.

In the six overs after the Powerplay the Tridents begun to lose their way. First Kane Williamson was brilliantly stumped by Andre Fletcher down the leg side off the bowling of Rahkeem Cornwall and then Kieron Pollard mis-timed a rank short ball from Cornwall in the twelfth over to leave the Tridents 83 for 3 after 11.3 overs.

Having struggled for timing in the Powerplay, Smith then begun to find his range, striking his first six in the 12th over and another a few balls later before taking 22 off a Shane Watson over to really get the innings moving. Smith lost his partner, Eoin Morgan, but continued unabated scoring boundaries on both sides of the ground, pulling well off the back foot and driving with typical aplomb off the front foot.

The Stars have struggled to restrict run-scoring in the death overs this season and their weakness was once again exposed as Smith punished some wayward lines. 28 runs came from the 18th and 19th over before a 42-minute stoppage due to a floodlight failure delayed the bowling of the last over. When they eventually returned Watson struggled to bowl the right length and Christopher Barnwell and Smith took 22 from the over, with Smith reaching his century with consecutive sixes. Watson finished with figures of 0 for 55 from just three overs and the Tridents with 195 for 5 - the equal highest total at Kensington Oval.

The Stars innings started in frenetic fashion when Andre Fletcher hit a six and a four in the opening over before mis-timing a short ball from Ravi Rampaul to Eoin Morgan in the deep. Watson briefly threatened to get going, scoring 22 before pulling a Wahab Riaz short ball to mid-wicket. Three Cornwall boundaries helped the Stars to 54 for 2 after six overs.

The relaxing of the field restrictions did nothing to slow Cornwall who cleared the ropes three times in the two overs after the Powerplay and moved to his fifty in the 11th over, off just 26 balls. Johnson Charles struggled for fluency and timing and scored just 13 off 20. Cornwall was having no such troubles however and continued to find the boundary regularly enough to keep the run rate in check. He should have been dismissed in only the 9th over when he picked out Barnwell at long off who dropped the catch.

With five overs remaining and 59 required Cornwall begun to show signs of tiring complicating the Stars strategy. Running between the wickets ceased to be an option and after the equation had been reduced to 48 off 16 balls Cornwall decided to retire, allowing Darren Sammy to come in. Two balls later Marlon Samuels picked out Pollard on the boundary. In the face of a spiraling run rate and some tight death bowling the Stars were unable to stay with the Tridents and eventually fell short by 29 runs.

Eid Mubarak.

Tallawahs vs Amazon Warriors.

Sami will probably be in action though Imad is done since they signed Mahmudullah as a replacement.

The legend Sohail Tanvir will be playing but I'm not sure about Babar's situation. AFAIK they didn't sign a replacement but I haven't heard that he's gone back to the Caribbean so....

Agree with your comments re Thomas.

Care to expand on the part in bold? One of the things Pakistan cricket is regularly praised for is its willingness to test out young fast bowlers on the international scene so I am surprised by your criticism. It's obviously not perfect but I don't think your assessment is fair.

Key part "best upcoming talent." The one's they are testing currently are mediocre with limited potential. Whereas Windies immediately got the likes of Alzarri in the national squad. Expect the same with these two. It comes down to knowledge and ability to identify true potential before it flourishes. We simply don't have anyone capable currently. The Windies are much superior in that aspect, however flawed they are in management of the board and players.

0 (1) for Sohail today :afridi Poor guy had to face Thomas' 90 MPH bouncer but he bowled a good spell of 4-0-27-2.

Haven't really watched much of it but looks like all the Tallawahs bowlers got smashed including Thomas.

Easy win for GAW in the end thanks to another smashing knock by Walton with a helpful hand played by Ronchi, he's proving to be a big upgrade on Guptill who was struggling big time.

Btw did anyone notice that Wahab dismissed Watto? :wahab2 :rahat :rahat1

Guyana Amazon Warriors 150-1 (Walton 84*, Ronchi 55*, Thomas 1-32) beat Jamaica Tallawahs 149-7 (McCarthy 44, Sangakkara 38, Tanvir 2-27) by nine wickets

An astonishing run-chase by Guyana Amazon Warriors made a mockery of Jamaica Tallawahs total of 149 in match 28 of the 2017 Hero Caribbean Premier League. Chadwick Walton’s unbeaten 84 propelled the Amazon Warriors to the total with 57 balls to spare.

Walton was in no mood to hang around in pursuit of a total which although below-par seemed it might trouble the visitors on a tacky pitch at Sabina Park. A superb display of ball-striking ensured that was certainly not the case.

The Amazon Warriors innings begun in the manner in which it continued. Oshane Thomas started with two no balls, the second of which was hit for six and the ensuing free hit was hit for six too, meaning 14 runs came from the first legal delivery. Thomas recovered to dismiss Sohail Tanvir by the end of the first over but that was the last moment of joy for the Tallawahs in a staggering innings.

Walton clinically punished fractional errors in length from the Tallawahs, striking boundaries on both sides of the ground. After hitting boundaries off Kesrick Williams he celebrated by mimicking Williams’ trademark notebook celebration. With a little help from some lusty blows from Luke Ronchi, Walton and the Amazon Warriors set a new record for the highest Powerplay in CPL history of 88 for 1 despite only eight runs coming from the fifth over, bowled by Mahmudullah.

The field dropping back did not stop Walton. He was given a reprieve when on 48—Rovman Powell and Mahmudullah colliding to drop a high catch—but he continued furiously on. As the runs continued to flow the Tallawahs discipline abandoned them: Williams at one point bowled three consecutive no balls.

There was just time for Ronchi to reach his fifty before the Amazon Warriors sealed victory with a scarcely believable 57 balls to spare.

After the Tallawahs elected to bat first their innings got off to a slow start and cost them both opening batsmen. First Glenn Phillips missed a sweep shot off Veerasammy Permaul and was bowled and then Lendl Simmons was caught at mid-wicket off a leading edge, duped by a Rayad Emrit slower ball. The Tallawahs Powerplay score of 30 for 2 was their lowest of the season so far.

It was not until the eighth over of the innings that the Tallawahs really got going, when Andre McCarthy put away two short balls from Permaul for six and then four. McCarthy took a four and a six off each of the two overs after that, from Steven Jacobs and Rashid Khan, dispatching boundaries off the front and back foot.

After the drinks break Kumar Sangakkara hit his first boundary off his 19th ball moments before McCarthy was caught off a top-edged pull off Roshon Primus for 44 off 35 balls, ending a sprightly partnership. Two overs and one more boundary later Sangakkara was gone too - caught playing a lap sweep for the third dismissal in a row off the bowling of Emrit for 38. His dismissal left the Tallawahs 120 for 4 with four overs remaining leaving Rovman Powell and Mahmudullah the responsibility of capitalising on McCarthy and Sangakkara’s work.

Neither man was able to do this with both of them being dismissed by Sohail Tanvir in the penultimate over without causing any notable damage. A four for Jonathan Foo and a six for Krishmar Santokie took 14 from the last over, lifting the Tallawahs to 149 for 7 - the average first innings score at Sabina Park. Of the Amazon Warriors bowlers only Jacobs had an economy rate higher than 7.25 - restricting the Tallawahs was a team effort. Khan, despite not taking a wicket, was arguably the pick of the bowlers with 0 for 25 from his four overs

Bringing the players back to Pakistan and then allowing them to play again wasa ad decision.

Still in Pakistan I think.

Yeah he is there... looks like his stint is over too though I am not aware of SKNP signing a replacement so that's a bit strange.

Shadab into the attack and Morgan is run out off the first ball... Tridents in trouble, relying on Pollard once again. 43/4

Shadab in to bat now with TKR in a bit of bother. 75 needed in 10 overs.

4-1-13-2 and a run out :shadab

Its really great to see Pakistan producing some great products not only for Pakistan's cricket but for the brand of cricket as a whole.
Be it Shadab, Amir, Hassan, Sarfaraz, Yasir etc

Though really need to produce some batting sensations in limited overs affair. Fakhar has given good initial impression all around the globe and hopefully Babar will keep on improving.

What a ridiculous six by Scantlebury-Searles! :O :))

Knight Riders have a strong lower order, they can still chase this.

Wahab turning it on once again. He is a good T20 bowler in the last 10 overs atleast with bit of reverse swing.

50 overs is not the format suited to him with two new balls and generally with three pace bowlers Wahab bowling in the first 10, 15 overs turns out to be not so good for the team or for him.

Parnell hauls Barbados Tridents back from the brink

2017 Hero Caribbean Premier League - Match Report 29

Barbados Tridents 136-9 (Parnell 44, Springer 21, Shadab 2-13) beat Trinbago Knight Riders 120-9 (Searles 29, McCullum 26, Parnell 3-31) by 16 runs

An excellent all-round display from Wayne Parnell helped the Barbados Tridents pull off an unlikely victory against Trinbago Knight Riders in Match 29 of the 2017 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Parnell’s 44 not out led a recovery from 62 for 7 to set the Knight Riders 137 to win before his hostile opening spell set up an impressive defence of a low total. The Tridents victory just keeps them in the hunt for a place at finals week, but they require a big win against St Kitts & Nevis Patriots tomorrow to boost their Net Run Rate.

What should have been a straightforward chase of 137 for the Knight Riders quickly became more difficult, thanks largely to Parnell who bowled a aggressive spell in the Powerplay. Bowling a tight line and a shorter length, Parnell dismissed Sunil Narine and Colin Munro when pulling before forcing Brendon McCullum to retire hurt after striking him on the elbow.

One ball after the end of the Powerplay the Knight Riders were effectively four down for just 41 when Ravi Rampaul got one to lift from a length and Darren Bravo was caught at point. Dwayne Bravo’s arrival at the crease brought a tactic of back of a length and short bowling which stifled the scoring and increased the required rate further still.

When Denesh Ramdin was caught down the leg side off Kieron Pollard the Knight Riders had lost five batsmen and still required 79 off 62 balls. With Rampaul bowling well from the other end the required run rate continued to climb and the pressure soon accounted for Shadab Khan who charged Pollard and was caught behind.

When Wahab Riaz yorked Robbie Frylink and Shamar Springer had Bravo caught on the boundary the Tridents would have felt like they had it won. However with 45 required off 24 the match ignited once more when Javon Searles hit Parnell for back to back fours and then an outrageous ramped six. After Ashley Nurse edged a four through third man the equation had become 26 off 19. Parnell had the last laugh though, bowling Nurse with a full ball.

Searles continued to fight, slashing a four off the first ball of the penultimate over off Wahab but when he was caught next ball the match was done with McCullum unable to return.

Earlier in the evening after winning the toss, the Knight Riders opened with pace bowlers Anderson Phillip and Searles. Both bowlers found movement in the air and off the pitch with the new ball, which accounted for both Dwayne Smith and Kane Williamson caught behind.

The Knight Riders’ first bowling change immediately brought a wicket as Nicholas Pooran took on the off spin of Nurse first ball and picked out one of the two fielders outside the ring at long-off. In the next over the Tridents had only themselves to blame for the fourth wicket as some hesitant running and calling between Eoin Morgan and Pollard ended with Morgan run out. At the end of the Powerplay the Tridents were 43 for 4.

A poor opening six overs demanded a major rebuild for the Tridents but regular wickets complicated matters. First, Christopher Barnwell was trapped lbw by a Shadab googly which beat him on the inside edge. Two overs later Akeal Hosein slipped mid-pitch and was run out meaning the Tridents were six down. Hopes of a competitive total appeared to be extinguished when a well flighted ball outside off stump from Shadab invited the drive from Pollard who edged to Dwayne Bravo at first slip.

The Tridents did not give up hope though. A Hero CPL record eighth wicket partnership of 48 between Wayne Parnell and Shamar Springer kept them in the match. The Knight Riders were happy to concede singles but didn’t account for the boundary hitting ability of the pair and the partnership had become an irritant when it was eventually broken as Springer slapped a short ball from Bravo to the off side boundary-rider. Parnell finished 44 not out to help lift the Tridents from 62 for 7 to 136 for 9.

Yeah he is there... looks like his stint is over too though I am not aware of SKNP signing a replacement so that's a bit strange.

They did sign a replacement. Ben Hilfenhaus of Australia has been playing for St Kitts & Nevis Patriots since Hasan Ali left.

Won't be surprised if Ronchi is signed up for the PSL- he should be free and the pitches will be pretty similar.

Also Ben Hilfenhaus as Hasan Ali's replacement is a blast from the past.

I did not notice Hilfenhaus is in the squad.

Any idea if a replacement was signed for Babar? Since it doesn't look like he's returning either... Ronchi has been added to the squad recently but that was as a replacement for Guptill who had to leave.

I thought there was a match on tonight?

No problem.

Quick edit, I was just about to reply about the Rashid Khan bit. :ma

Rashid Khan? I wonder what you are referring to. :shhh

Haha, it was a complete brain fade on my part. Plus, I was nearly caught out by the two minute limit. :hasan

Williamson falls cheaply- has had a poor CPL this year.

Morgan was bowled and then he stood his ground and waited for the third umpire to give him out. What's worse is that I'm pretty sure he has done that before... :murali

Pollard :))) You cheap loser.

They needed one run to win and Lewis needed 3 for his hundred and he bowls a ridiculously high-bouncer. No-ball and SKNP win by 10 wickets with 13 overs to spare.

Lewis finishes on 97* off 32 balls.

Lewis got his 50 off 19 balls which is the second fastest ever in the CPL.

Guess who has the fastest? :sohail....

The legend grows. :salute

By the time Sohail retires from CPL, Sobers will no longer be the most influential cricketer to have played on Windies soil.

Lewis blitz thrashes Tridents

2017 Hero Caribbean Premier League - Match Report 30

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots 129-0 (Lewis 97*, Gayle 22*) beat Barbados Tridents 128-9 (Webster 32, Pooran 21, Brathwaite 4-15)

A historic innings from Evin Lewis consigned the Barbados Tridents to a 10-wicket defeat in Match 30 of the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Lewis blitzed 97 off just 32 balls in an astonishing assault that saw the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots chase 129 in only seven overs. The Patriots innings run rate of 18.48 runs per over is the highest innings run rate in the history of T20 cricket. The result means the Tridents miss out on a spot in Finals Week while the Patriots have finished second in the table and will be given two chances at a shot in the final.

The Patriots run-chase was over almost as soon as it had begun. The formidable opening pair of Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis wasted no time in tucking into the Tridents’ new ball bowling. Lewis hit the ball astonishingly cleanly from the very start of his innings, taking three sixes from Wayne Parnell’s first over and never looking back. Lewis scored on both sides of the wicket but predominantly the leg side, picking sixes up over square leg, heaving them over mid-wicket and clubbing them straight. He reached his fifty off just 19 balls. Gayle was left in the unfamiliar role of support act.

The Patriots Powerplay score of 105 for 0 is the equal second highest score in the first six overs in T20 history. Lewis appeared set to bring up his century with the winning runs only for Pollard to bowl a no ball with one run required leaving him stranded on 97 not out.

Earlier in the evening, after winning the toss and electing to bat first, a bright start by the Tridents was derailed when they lost both openers to the last ball of the fifth and first ball of the sixth over. First Nicholas Pooran mis-judged the length of a ball from Mohammad Hafeez and was bowled when looking to pull. Then Dwayne Smith inside edged a pull shot off Carlos Brathwaite onto his thigh pad and into the wicket-keepers gloves. The Tridents scored 45 for 2 off their six Powerplay overs.

After the Powerplay Kane Williamson and Tion Webster appeared content to busily rotate the strike, picking off ones and twos in the outfield. However, the pressure of a slowly moving scoreboard begun to tell after a string of tight deliveries. Eventually it accounted for Williamson when he slog-swept Tabraiz Shamsi and was caught in the deep. Four balls later Eoin Morgan was bowled by Mohammad Nabi after playing down the wrong line as a consequence of some drift. The ball pitched and held its line, pegging back off stump. When Shamar Springer was trapped lbw by Shamsi in the following over the Tridents were reeling at 81 for 5.

Webster threatened to get going when he launched Nabi for a huge six and then delicately guided a four through third man. However, the wickets of Kieron Pollard and Webster in the same over from Carlos Brathwaite quickly extinguished hopes of a comeback as the Tridents slipped further into the mire. In the eighteenth over Brathwaite collected his fourth wicket, to finish with 4 for 15 in a spell of tight lines and back of a length bowling.

In the end, the Tridents limped their way to a total of 129 for 8 from their 20 overs, a total that was surpassed in just 42 balls.

Beaton bowling quickly.

Why on earth (i) did they not appeal for this and (ii) how was this not given?
