PIA aircraft crashes in residential area near Karachi airport

A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) aircraft A320 Airbus on Friday crashed in Model Colony near Jinnah international airport Karachi.

PIA spokesperson Abdul Sattar confirmed the crash and added that Flight 8303 was carrying 90 passengers and 8 crew members from Lahore to Karachi.

Footage showed plumes of smoke rising from the site of the crash. Ambulances and rescue officials arrived at the scene to help residents.

A statement by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said Army Quick Reaction Force and Sindh Pakistan Rangers reached the site for relief and rescue efforts alongside civil administration.

Minister of Health & Population Welfare has declared emergency in all major hospitals of Karachi due to the plane crash, according to Meeran Yousuf, the media coordinator to the Sindh health minister.

Last year, a PIA aircraft escaped accident after it skidded off the runway while landing at Gilgit airport.

Passengers had remained safe in the accident, but the plane suffered considerable damage.

In 2016, PIA flight PK-661 carrying 48 passengers and crew had crashed on the way to Islamabad from Chitral on December 7. There were no survivors from the ill-fated flight.

This is a developing story that is being updated as the situation evolves. Initial reports in the media can sometimes be inaccurate. We will strive to ensure timeliness and accuracy by relying on credible sources such as concerned, qualified authorities and our staff reporters.

Hopefully there are no fatalities.

Pakistan needs to get its act together, these kind of crashes don't happen in developed countries anymore.

Really sad news.

Hopefully not many fatalities...

However it isn’t looking good :(

Really sad news.... Hope rescue services are at the site. I hear plenty of houses on fire where the plane crashed. Ya Allah please help

RIP.

Seems the nose gear failed to deploy.

Very sad news. But I doubt there will be many survivors. Several houses have been destroyed too.

Yes bro, tragic news a day before Eid.

Sincere condolences to the loved one’s of the departed souls...

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajioon.

Could have been essential workers on the plane. This is all very sad. Even for the residents, must be a huge trauma, days before Eid.

2020 year has been a truly challenging year so far. May Allah grant the souls highest of rankings in Jannah. Ameen.

Apparently pilot was in contact with ATC and had informed of 'technical fault'.... Emergency protocols had been initiated and two runways that were in the flight path had been cleared and pilot instructed to land on either one but for some inexplicable reason pilot decided to go around and then lost contact.

KARACHI: A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) passenger plane crashed in a residential area near Karachi's Jinnah International Airport on Friday less than a minute before landing.

It is estimated that 97 people were aboard the plane, including 85 passengers and 12 members of the flight crew.

CAA sources said that its communication was cut off with the plane a minute before it was supposed to land.

Troops form the Pakistan Army's Quick Reaction Force and Pakistan Rangers Sindh arrived at the crash site shortly after to assist the civil administration in relief and rescue efforts.

Several houses were damaged in the area where the plane crashed.

Ambulances were faced with difficulty as the streets were quite narrow and the huge presence of people made it difficult for relief operations to continue.

PIA spokesperson Abdullah Hafeez said that said that the airline was receiving information in real time. He said that Air Marshal Arshad Malik was reaching Karachi in two hours to assess the situation.

He said that it was premature to point out any technical fault in the plane and an independent institution will carry out an investigation to ascertain the cause of the crash.

Hafeez said that the PIA would hold a detailed press conference to share the details of the crash soon.

Rescue sources said that 15-20 persons have been helped out from under the rubble. Eight persons have been injured and shifted to a hospital for medical treatment. The body of a 5-year-old and another person was recovered found from the site. "Due to the rush, we are encountering difficulties in carrying out relief operations," said SSP Malir. "People should avoid gathering at the accident site," he added.

Senior journalist Ansar Naqvi, who used to work for The News and was currently working for Channel 24 as its Director Programming, also died in the crash.

Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa condoled over the loss of lives in the plane crash. The army chief directed the provision of full assistance to the civil administration in rescue and relief efforts.

The PIA has released a passenger manifest according to which 51 men, 31 women and nine children were aboard the PK-8303 flight.

Fateh Ilahi, Raheem Zain, Kashif Shabbir ahmad, Rizwan Ahmad and Bilal Ahmad are names of some of the passengers. Yasmin Iqbani, Farwa Ali, Armghan Ali, Fauzia Arjumand, Mohammad S Aslam, Mohammad Ataullah and Rai Ataullah were also on board the airplane.

This is the recording transcription that is being widely shared on social media:

Last Radio conv of PK8303

Control: appear to be turning left.

Pilot: we are proceeding direct we have lost engine.

Control: runway available to land at 25

Pilot: Roger

Pilot: Sir Mayday Mayday Mayday Mayday Pakistan 8303

Control: 8303 roger both runways clear to land

The plane wasn't even that old and apparently maintenance record was flawless too. Issue occured when plane was approaching for landing. Eyewitnesses say engine was on fire. Could a bird have flown in it?

Right now can't say for sure but survivors could also be people in the houses etc

This is tragic news especially right before Eid. My prayers are with all the departed souls. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajioon.

Dunya news is saying plane had technical issues before takeoff and requested clearance 3 times. It was repaired last month. Don't know how true it is but this seems a case of negligence from PIA.

Also, according to ARY, they gave the pilot clearance to land on 2 runways but he decided to go-round and plane crashed in residential area.

This is what happens with our disgusting media. Dunya News running ticker "Musafiron ki list sab se pehle Dunya News pe."

I know the news channels are doing it for attention but what’s wrong in publishing passenger list of casualties? Wouldn’t the concerned family members want to know what’s going on?

There should be a process and some ethics. Pakistani media channels will do anything for attention.

Normally, authorities or airline officials should be releasing the list in a professional manner after informing the families. It's also important to ascertain what happened to them, i.e., whether they are OK, injured, or dead. When it's done via non-official sources then there may be errors that can cause panic and grief.

Saw a video from a resident of one of the houses effected, so the plane essentially took out the upper floors and roofs of a whole row of houses before crashing essentially in the middle of a narrow street.... This gives me hope that plane might have slowed down enough and people sitting around the middle seats may have a chance to survive. Although that chance is diminishing by the second as the smoke and fire continue.

Zafar Masud's survival seems to have been confirmed by a few news channels and his contacts on Twitter. Great news. Hope there are others.

Zafar Masud's survival seems to have been confirmed by a few news channels and his contacts on Twitter. Great news. Hope there are others.

6 injured people have been recovered as per Public News uncertain if these were passengers or residents

New update is that the rear of the plane collided first and then the front so perhaps the pilot was trying to do a landing procedure to minimize impact and maybe that is why Zafar Masud survived. He is the president of BoP so very likely he was travelling in business class

This is what happens with our disgusting media. Dunya News running ticker "Musafiron ki list sab se pehle Dunya News pe."

Media always looking to make money and promote itself. Doesn't matter how.

Many such lists and transcript of last radio contact being spread on the social media right after the incident does more harm than any good.

Pilot's dead body recovered

Inna lillahi wa inna illahi rajioon

Another survivor..... People sitting near the front are surviving. Inshallah there will be more

Sincere condolences to the families. Hope God gives them strength in this difficult time

3 survivors so far

The mayor of Karachi has said there are no survivors after a Pakistan International Airlines plane carrying around 100 people crashed in a residential area in the city.

Local reports said the state-run airline's Airbus A320 was travelling from Lahore.

The state carrier said flight PK 8303 had crashed with 99 passengers and eight crew members on board, though civil
aviation officials said the total for both may be 99.

"The last we heard from the pilot was that he has some technical problem," PIA spokesman Abdullah H Khan said in a video statement. "It is a very tragic incident."

It is feared there may be more casualties as the plane came down on houses in the Model Colony area in the city.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan tweeted: "Shocked & saddened by the PIA crash. . . Immediate inquiry will be instituted. Prayers & condolences go to families of the deceased."

A spokesperson for the Pakistan Armed Forces tweeted that helicopters were being used in the search and rescue effort and that paramilitary troops had reached the site, alongside civil administration.

Fire crews rushed to the scene and a man is seen directing them through the crowds.
Local TV station Geo showed crowds near the scene which appeared to be a densely populated area and ambulances trying to make their way through. It also showed black smoke billowing above buildings.

Footage taken from the scene showed a woman crying as she was helped to safety by another woman and one man being helped by a passer-by as he limped through the cordon.

Hospital staff prepare to receive the victims of the passenger plane crash of state run Pakistan International Airlines in Karachi, Pakistan, 22 May 2020. A PIA Airbus A-320 flight from Lahore to Karachi carrying some 107 passengers and crew, crashed while landing in Karachi on 22 May.

Witnesses said the aircraft appeared to attempt to land two or three times before crashing near Jinnah International Airport.

A senior civil aviation official told the Reuters news agency it appeared the plane was unable to open its wheels due to a technical fault prior to landing, but it was to early to determine the cause.

Ambulance arrive near the scene of a passenger plane crash of state run Pakistan International Airlines in Karachi, Pakistan, 22 May 2020. A PIA Airbus A-320 flight from Lahore to Karachi carrying some 107 passengers and crew, crashed while landing in Karachi on 22 May.

The residential area on the edge of the airport known as Model Colony is a poor area and heavily congested.

A resident of the area, Abdul Rahman, said he saw the aircraft circle at least three times, appearing to try to land at the airport before it crashed into several houses.

The flight typically takes an hour and a half to travel from the northeastern city of Lahore to Karachi.

Airworthiness documents showed the plane last received a government check on 1 November, 2019.

PIA's chief engineer signed a separate certificate on 28 April saying all maintenance had been conducted on the plane and that "the aircraft is fully airworthy and meets all the safety" standards.

Airbus did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the crash.

Witnesses said the aircraft appeared to attempt to land two or three times before crashing near Jinnah International Airport.

A senior civil aviation official told the Reuters news agency it appeared the plane was unable to open its wheels due to a technical fault prior to landing, but it was to early to determine the cause.

This is so horrific and sad to see. RIP to all victims. This year keep getting worse.

Location of crash... So near the runway :ssmith

Apparently pilot was in contact with ATC and had informed of 'technical fault'.... Emergency protocols had been initiated and two runways that were in the flight path had been cleared and pilot instructed to land on either one but for some inexplicable reason pilot decided to go around and then lost contact.

Based on that image it looks like the pilot was going straight for the runway and just couldn't make the distance :mv

Tragic news. RIP to all the victims.

PIA planes in general don’t seem properly maintained. No working inflight entertainment systems, poor air cabin pressure etc are all very common. I wouldn’t be surprised if its the case of cutting corners in terms of maintenance and repair. In aviation a job half done can easily be as lethal as this.

PIA staff is full of sifarishi, so this needs to get investigated properly.

The plane wasn't even that old and apparently maintenance record was flawless too. Issue occured when plane was approaching for landing. Eyewitnesses say engine was on fire. Could a bird have flown in it?

Maintenance record can't be verified as flawless so soon. Only a detailed inquiry can ascertain if maintenance procedures had a say in engine failure as CAA will do full fledged investigation of physical evidence collected and then determine if maintenance procedures had any impact on the engine failure modes.

Being a student of this field, I feel pilot error might have a big say as it's being reported that the pilot did a fly-by 3 times while knowing that he had lost control of both engines, hence the most risk-free approach would've been to land without a landing gear (which is an emergency procedure) but he decided to re-attempt landing thrice which was a risky move.

However I still feel there will be some suspicion on the ground inspection staff and maintenance team.

A very sad and avoidable tragedy indeed. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajioon.
May Allah give sabr to the deceased's loved ones.

Absolutely tragic !

RIP to the deceased. Hope there will be more survivors.

Civil aviation officials have said at least two people have survived the crash of a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane in Karachi that had 91 passengers and seven crew on board.

The carrier originally said flight PK 8303 from Lahore had 107 people on board but a spokesman for Pakistan's civil aviation authority attributed the discrepancy to confusion in the tense aftermath of the crash.

Local TV stations ran footage of a man on a stretcher who they said had survived the crash.

Witnesses said the aircraft appeared to attempt to land two or three times before crashing in a residential area near Jinnah International Airport.

"The last we heard from the pilot was that he had some technical problem," PIA spokesman Abdullah H Khan said in a video statement. "It is a very tragic incident."

The pilot sent a Mayday and told controllers the aircraft had lost power from both its engines on its second attempt to land, according to a recording posted online.

After the aircraft reportedly called off an earlier attempt to land and went around for a second attempt, a controller radioed the pilot that he appeared to be turning left, suggesting he was off-course.

The pilot replied, "We are returning back, sir, we have lost engines," and the controller cleared the plane to land on either of the airport's two runways.

Pakistan resumed domestic flights earlier this week ahead of the Eid holiday marking the end of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan.

It has been in a countrywide lockdown since mid-March to try to stem the spread of coronavirus.

15 people have been recovered alive.... Unclear how many are passengers and how many are residents

A passenger plane with nearly 100 people on board has crashed in a residential area in the Pakistani city of Karachi, killing at least 30 people and wounding many others, officials said.

The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane was close to landing at Karachi's Jinnah International Airport when it came down among houses, sending plumes of smoke into the air that could be seen from some distance away.

It was unclear if the dead were all passengers or also included people on the ground.

PIA spokesman Abdullah Hafeez said there were 91 passengers and seven crew on board the flight, which lost contact with air traffic control just after 2:30pm (09:30 GMT).

"It is too early to comment on the cause of the crash," he told the AFP news agency.

Abdul Sattar Khokhar, the spokesman for the country's aviation authority, said the Airbus A320 was travelling from Lahore to Karachi, the country's largest city.

Flight PK8303 was due to land in Karachi at 14:45 local time (09:45 GMT).

The Pakistan military said security forces had been deployed to the area and helicopters were being used to survey the damage and help ongoing rescue operations.

"Our plane A320 which was coming from Lahore to Karachi ... the last words for the pilot were that there is a technical problem and he was told on final approach that he has both runways available to him. But the pilot indicated that he wanted to go around," PIA's CEO Arshad Malik said in a video message released after the crash.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Meeran Yousuf, spokeswoman for the health department in Sindh province where the crash took place, said at least 30 people have died and several others are wounded.

"So far, only three bodies have been identified due to severe burns. Two aircraft passengers are confirmed among the wounded," she said.

Earlier on Friday, Sindh's Health Minister Azra Pechucho said at least 11 bodies and six wounded people were taken to Karachi's main government hospital.

"Eleven dead bodies have been brought here and six wounded have been brought here," she said, speaking at Karachi's Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). "Of the six [wounded], four are stable and two are burns cases."

"We are doing DNA testing of the dead bodies so that they can be identified and they can be given to their families," Pechucho added.

Earlier, a relative of a passenger on board told Al Jazeera she was able to contact him after the crash.

Images shown on national television showed plumes of smoke above congested residential apartment buildings, with fire trucks en route to the scene of the crash.

Television footage from the scene showed a number of ambulances unable to make progress in the narrow lanes of the residential neighbourhood where the crash took place, as people crowded in towards the site.

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan said he was "shocked and saddened" by the crash, tweeting that he was in touch with the state airline's chief executive. "Prayers & condolences go to families of the deceased," said Khan.

The disaster comes as Pakistanis across the country are preparing to celebrate the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid al-Fitr, with many travelling back to their homes in cities and villages.

Pakistan resumed limited domestic commercial flights last week, after a months-long suspension due to the coronavirus. Flights are operating with reduced capacity to ensure that passengers are sitting with one seat's space between them in cabins.

In 2016, a PIA commercial flight crashed in the northern Pakistani region of Chitral, killing all 47 people on board.

PIA, one of the world's leading airlines until the 1970s, has in recent years experienced frequent cancellations, delays and financial troubles.

The pilot surely must have done something extraordinarily in terms of avoiding maximum damage for there to be survivors?
Don’t think I’ve ever come across a plane crash where there have been survivors in recent years.

Absolutely shocked that

1. Passenger manifest has been made public and we still have identified the bodies
2. Audio of conversation with control tower which should be part of the investigation was put out

even sky news were broadcasting it..disgraceful..

There needs to be a proper investigation but its clear that PIA has had problems for years. Parties like the PPP need to be held to account.

He had initiated proper emergency protocols and was going step by step through them but it seems the engines just ran out of power a few feet before the runway. Even the impact on the ground is not a localized spot instead the plane first sheared off the roofs of a row of houses before crashing in the middle of a street suggesting that it didn't drop like a rock instead the pilot was trying to land it as softly as possible. Speaks volume of the composure and cool head under the circumstances. Sadly all blame will be laid on his shoulders because he isn't around to defend himself, meanwhile the real culprits will get away with it.

PM Modi and Rahul Gandhi have expressed their condolences.

It's been a bad week.

A cyclone and now this.

2020 is clearly upto no good.

Plane crash survivor Zafar Masud being rescued

<div style="width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 50%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/e/6sz33g" frameborder="0" width="100%" height="100%" allowfullscreen style="width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;"></iframe></div>

KARACHI: Bank of Punjab Chief Executive Officer Zafar Masud and another passenger miraculously survived with relatively minor injuries, after a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane crashed on Friday in a residential area near the metropolis' Jinnah International Airport.

Masud was among the 98 persons travelling in Karachi-bound PIA flight PK-8303 from Lahore, which crashed in the Jinnah Garden area near Model Colony in Malir almost a minute before landing.

It is still too early to say if there are more survivors from the tragedy, by the update has offered a glimmer of hope to rescue teams racing to save as many souls as they can.

The BOP president was shifted to the Darul Sehat Hospital after being recovered from the crash site and is reportedly out of danger. He spoke to his mother on the phone and informed her about his health.

Masud has sustained fractures to his hip and collar bones, the Darul Sehat Hospital's administration said, adding that there were no burn marks on his body, only scratches.

According to the hospital administration, Masud’s CT scan has been done and his condition is out of danger.

Masud's brother is with him in the hospital.

Another survivor confirmed
Sindh government Spokesperson Barrister Murtaza Wahab later confirmed that there are two people who miraculously survived the crash.

The survivor of the plane crash also gave a statement in which he said that the plane started jolting before landing.

“The next moment there was a hard crash and I lost consciousness,” said Zubair, adding that when he came woke up there was ‘smoke everywhere’.

The hospital administration said that Zubair faced minor injuries and is currently undertreatment at the burns ward.

Reports indicated that the plane's tail-end hit the ground first and that anyone who survived was seated in the front portion.
