[VIDEOS/PICTURES] 97 killed as PIA Airbus A320 crashes into residential area near Karachi airport

even sky news were broadcasting it..disgraceful..

There needs to be a proper investigation but its clear that PIA has had problems for years. Parties like the PPP need to be held to account.

Think the Audio came from liveatc.net so maybe available on public domain but still someone alerted our press to it.

EXCLUSIVE: Man booked to fly on crashed PK-8303 saved by system error

LAHORE: Syed Mustafa Ahmed tried three times on Thursday to confirm payment online for seat 13-A on Pakistan International Airlines flight PK-8303 from Lahore to Karachi, but each time, a system error stopped him from finalizing the booking.

Ahmed was desperate-- he needed to get into Karachi on Friday before the 5 p.m. coronavirus lockdowns cut off transport links and the PIA flight was his best bet.

“I booked myself on seat 13-A, but when the payment option came, there was a system error. I tried three times, but in the last step, the website just wouldn’t let me pay and confirm my booking,” Ahmed told Arab News via telephone.

Frustrated, he called a friend who worked in a different airline to help him sort the issue out.

“I have a friend who works in Serene Airlines, and I told him I need to take this flight. I asked him for his help with the booking. We tried again, but it just wasn’t happening.”

On Friday afternoon, the A320 airbus Ahmed had been desperately trying to get aboard crashed into a congested colony of homes moments before its scheduled landing in Karachi with an estimated 98 people on board. There is so far no confirmation on the number of casualties.

The Karachi-based owner of digital marketing social enterprise, MMarkent, had just returned to Lahore from Gilgit after spending 90 days away from home as part of coronavirus relief efforts for a child and animal rescue and relief campaign he runs called Servants of Humanity-- which he says is inspired by the life of Abdus Sattar Edhi.

“I was impatient to get back home to Karachi to get started on the packing and distribution of Eid packages for over a hundred orphaned children we sponsor around the city,” Ahmed said.

“I wanted the PIA flight because its timings ensured I landed before the 5 p.m. citywide lockdown. When I was unable to proceed ahead with payment, my friend at Serene told me to travel on his free ticket with his airline instead-- except the flight would leave at 4 p.m. Thursday.”

“I was hesitant, because this would mean I would land later than I wanted. But he insisted I take him up on his offer and consider the money I saved as an Eid donation for the children we sponsored. And so I agreed,” he said.

Once Ahmed had landed safely in Karachi on Thursday evening, a google alert pinged on his phone.

“It said the system error had been dealt with and would I like to proceed with my PIA booking. By then, I was already home.”

“When the plane crashed this afternoon, I was overwhelmed with phone calls from friends and family. I’d forgotten to tell many of them I was taking an earlier flight. They thought I was on PK-8303,” Ahmed said.

“I suppose you could call it luck, but it shows me that while we are making our plans, God has other plans for us-- and God had planned that today, this flight was not for me.”

Location is Model Colony Area, my brother's in-laws live like two rows ahead where this plane crashed. Just a min away from runway probably 100m before where the plane crashed. There are like 7 to 8 survivors.

Allah khair :(

Just heard the pilots voice, he sounded so calm.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajioon

RIP.

Seems the nose gear failed to deploy.

It crashed in a residential area outside the airport perimeter. Don't see how that is linked to the nose gear not deploying. There have been any instances of safe landings with minor damage, without the nose gear deployed.

Apparently, there was a loss of power and the pilot sent a mayday.

In any case, there don't seem to be any survivors. RIP.

Seems like first it was landing gear failure so first landing attempt was aborted and on second attempt both the engines failed.

This is very weird sequence of events...

It seems that the plane tried to land previously but couldn't presumably due to the landing gear not functioning properly. They were then attempting a belly landing.

PIA spokesperson Abdullah Hafeez said that the A320 Airbus was carrying 91 passengers and 8 crew members from Lahore to Karachi on PK 8303. Eyewitnesses said the Airbus A320 appeared to attempt to land two or three times before crashing in a residential area near the airport.

“We are proceeding direct, sir — we have lost engine,” a pilot can be heard saying.

“Confirm your attempt on belly,” the air traffic controller said, offering a runway.

“Sir - mayday, mayday, mayday, mayday Pakistan 8303,” the pilot said before the transmission ended.

There are some survivors. At least 3 have been confirmed.

RIP.

Seems the nose gear failed to deploy.

Indeed, the pilot aborted the landing and the crash occurred during the subsequent attempts.

Aircraft registration is AP-BLD, 2004 build, leased from GECAS.

Airbus regrets to confirm that an A320 aircraft operated by Pakistan International Airlines was involved in an accident during flight PK8303 from Lahore to Karachi on May, 22 2020. Initial reports indicate there were 91 passengers and 8 crew members on-board. Our thoughts are with all those affected.

At this stage, Airbus has no confirmed information concerning the circumstances of the accident. The aircraft, registration number AP-BLD, Manufacturer Serial Number 2274, first entered service in 2004. It has been in operation with Pakistan International Airlines since 2014. The aircraft had logged around 47 100 flight hours and 25 860 flight cycles as of today. It was powered by CFM56-5B4/P engines.

In line with ICAO annex 13, Airbus is providing full technical assistance to the Bureau d’Enquêtes et d’Analyses of France and to the Pakistani Authorities in charge of the investigation. Technical support is also being provided by Pakistan International Airlines and engine manufacturer CFM.

Further updates will be provided as soon as further consolidated information is available and Airbus is authorized to release it.

My heart is so heavy right now. Such pain and terror. It is the worst possible thing to experience yourself in such a helpless situation moments before your imminent death.

May Allah grant Jannah to the deceased, patience to the bereaved and health to the wounded.

Well the PIA CEO seems to be already pointing the finger of blame on the pilot.

No surprise, PIA is full of incompetent and sifarishi people (incl the CEO himself). In the UK, Not too long ago the PIA pilots were caught drunk, while going to board the flight to operate it.

PIA himself should answer why an incompetent pilot was operating the flight and How come pilot’s incompetence made both engines to malfunction?

Engine failure is surely a separate point, that needs thorough investigation.

Such sad news to wake up to. This issue needs to be properly investigated ,was it a fault with the craft and thus Airbus? Or pilot and lack of proper training? Why did the plane veer so far off course?

Condolences and prayers for everyone in this time of Ramadan, may Allah grant them Jannah!

Pilots, cabin crew were all qualified, says PIA CEO after Karachi plane crash

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Chief Executive Officer Arshad Malik on Friday said that the pilots and cabin crew aboard PK8303 — that crashed in a residential colony in Karachi earlier in the day — were all qualified.

"Accidents happen, but our pilots are trained for these kind of events. These planes have checks and balances that we are required to fulfill.

"My pilots were qualified, their checks and balances, and medical tests were complete. My cabin crew was also qualified and my plane's inspection was also complete."

According to Radio Pakistan, Malik also said that the plane was "technically fit for flying", adding that an aircraft is given clearance for flying after ensuring all technical requirements are fulfilled.

Malik was holding a press conference hours after a PIA passenger plane, with an estimated 99 people onboard, crashed in Karachi's Model Colony near Jinnah International Airport on Friday.

Sindh health officials have said that so far, 76 people have been confirmed dead. It is, however, unclear if the deceased were all onboard the flight or include area residents as well where the crash took place. Two people are confirmed to have survived the crash, according to officials.

Addressing a press conference in Karachi, he said that an inquiry will be conducted into the plane crash by the Safety Investigation Board. "This is my responsibility and it is your right that you receive this information."

"What we know right now is that the plane technically, operationally and administratively, according to its schedule, arrives and establishes itself for a final landing approach.

"On that final landing approach, the pilot reports that he is ready [to land the aircraft]. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) controller gives him the go ahead [but] he does a go around.

"After this, he gives a call saying I will establish myself for a second approach. That is when something happened, and until we find the voice recorder and the data recorder [...] when those come then we will know if there was a technical fault or otherwise."

He added that when the plane began flying low, the air traffic controller asked the pilot is there was a problem. "They respond 'yes there is an issue' and that is where communication ends and the crash happens."

He added that PIA had emptied its airport hotels so that residents whose houses were affected in the crash can be accommodated.

"Fortunately, the plane landed in a street. It affected buildings in the vicinity but nothing collapsed. And, according to reports, miraculously there is no dead body there either."

He added that rescue operations were still under way and two to three days will be required to complete them. "Right now my teams are at Civil Hospital and at Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre. We will track all the victims and speak to their families."

Malik reiterated that the Safety Investigation Board, which will conduct an inquiry into the crash, is an independent institution, adding that PIA and the CAA will not interfere in its affairs.

He also refused to give an update about those killed in the crash, stating: "Until we have 100 per cent clarity, I will not give an update. We are currently in the process of collecting data."

There seems to be a contradiction here.

Not really.

He's saying qualified etc but in an interview shown on Sky news he was hinting at a wrong decision by the pilot.

The death toll in the crash in Karachi on May 22 of PIA flight PK 8303 has increased to 85 - two passengers survived the crash - 19 bodies have been identified so far.

@saj, He was not hinting at anything.

He said pilot notified of a technical issue, upon which ATC informed that both runways have been cleared. The pilot however decided to "go-around". We do not "at the moment" know why. I am paraphrasing but that is what he said. He did not assume or allude to anything just provided what information he had at the moment.

Survivor Muhammad Zubair told Geo News that pilot announced that we are landing and the plane did touch the runway for a few seconds then suddenly plane took off. I am not the aviation expert but just assuming that pilot forgot to turn on landing gears in first attempt which might have affected the engines and couldn't make it to runway in second attempt.

Seems as if landing gear had successfully deployed on second attempt at landing but idk why engines lost power

I would assume that if the plane tried to land on its belly in the first attempt, than some debris must have hit the engine during that attempt which would cause the engine failure afterwards. There was a crash that happened in the very past and the reason for that was something like this.

What a tragedy has unfolded just before a festival. pray for the survivors. Rest In Peace for others..
this is time to mourn for their families and friends and not discuss about conspiracies and governments.

This is heartbreaking to listen to. At 0:47 you can hear the alarms going off in the background. He was so calm and composed even when facing death. What a thorough professional. May Allah grant him the highest rank in Jannat. He tried his best.

This is heart breaking to listen to. I can't help but be in awe of the captain who, facing multiple system failures and probably knowing he was about to die, remained so calm.

I know everyone says that we shouldn't speculate on the reasons for the crash, but it seems blindingly obvious that this plane was not functioning properly, first with the landing gear and then with the engines. Whether pilot error contributed remains to be seen, but even us laymen can conclude that the plane was not fit to be in the air. The loved ones of all those who perished deserve answers. Why was such a defective plane allowed to fly?

Is there some major flaw in PIA plane maintenance?

I find it chilling to think that this is my route. Every time I go to Pakistan, I always take that flight from Lahore to Karachi via PIA. I may have even flown on the very plane that crashed. We all need answers right now. Why have the lives of so many people been taken away so cruely just before Eid? If there is a cover up I don't think many of us will ever fly PIA again.

Ameen.

This gave me goosebumps.

A sad tragedy...

very sad to see this... Rest in Peace to all souls and may allah give their families the strength to go thru this.
Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun.

RIP...Devastating times for families of the deceased. Hope they find the all the strength to fight through this.

The fact that there were 2 survivors is nothing short of a miracle. And kudos to the pilot, a thorough professional. There are so many lives saved every day because of people like him who dont panic in such situations. A true hero

One of the survivors of Friday's plane crash in the Pakistani city of Karachi has described his ordeal, saying all he could see "was fire".

Passenger Muhammad Zubair was one of at least two passengers who survived after the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Airbus A320 came down in a residential area.

Health authorities in Sindh province said 97 deaths had been confirmed.

The cause of the crash is not yet known.

But one civil aviation official told Reuters the plane may have been unable to lower its undercarriage.

Images posted on social media appeared to show scorch marks under both engines, with no undercarriage visible on approach.

Air disasters timeline

The crash came days after Pakistan allowed commercial flights to resume after the country's coronavirus lockdown was eased.

How did Muhammad Zubair escape?

Flight PK8303, an Airbus A320 carrying 91 passengers and eight crew - including many families travelling ahead of Sunday's Eid holiday - had travelled from Lahore.

It was attempting to land at Karachi's Jinnah International Airport at about 14:30 local time (09:30 GMT) when it came down.

Mr Zubair, who suffered only minor injuries, said the plane attempted one landing and then crashed 10-15 minutes later.

"No-one was aware that the plane was about to crash; they were flying the plane in a smooth manner," he said.

He lost consciousness following the crash. When he came to, he said, "I could hear screams from all directions. Kids and adults. All I could see was fire. I couldn't see any people - just hear their screams".

"I opened my seatbelt and saw some light - I went towards the light. I had to jump down about 10ft (3m) to get to safety," he added.

Why did the aircraft crash?

The plane was only just short of the runway perimeter when it struck houses in the Model Colony residential area. TV footage showed rescue crews combing through debris strewn across the streets of the densely populated zone. A number of cars were set on fire.

Eyewitness Mohammed Uzair Khan told the BBC he had heard a massive sound and went outside his home. "Almost four houses were completely collapsed, there was so much fire and smoke," he said. "They are almost my neighbours, I can't tell you what a horrible thing it was."

Purported audio of the conversation between air traffic control and a pilot was published by Pakistani media. The pilot is heard saying the plane had "lost engines". An air traffic controller asks whether it is going to carry out a "belly landing", to which the pilot replies "mayday, mayday, mayday".

Investigators will try to retrieve the so-called black box recorders to help determine the cause. A committee of investigation has already been set up.

PIA said the plane had joined the fleet in 2014 and passed its annual airworthiness inspection last November.

According to local authorities, 97 deaths have been confirmed, although it is unclear how many of the dead were passengers and how many residents on the ground. Nineteen of the dead have been identified.

Zafar Masud, president of the Bank of Punjab, was the other passenger who survived the crash, a provincial government spokesman said. Both were at the front of the plane. There are reports of other survivors but these have not been confirmed.

A senior journalist at TV channel 24 News, Ansar Naqvi, and an ex-head of the Punjab Disaster Management Authority, Khalid Sherdil, were also listed on the passenger manifest.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan said he was "shocked and saddened" by the crash, promising an immediate investigation.

What is Pakistan's safety record like?

Pakistan has a chequered aviation safety record, including a number of airliner crashes.

In 2010, an aircraft operated by private airline Airblue crashed near Islamabad, killing all 152 people on board - the deadliest air disaster in Pakistani history.

In 2012, a Boeing 737-200 operated by Pakistan's Bhoja Air crashed in bad weather on its approach to land in Rawalpindi, killing all 121 passengers and six crew.

And in 2016, a Pakistan International Airlines plane burst into flames while travelling from northern Pakistan to Islamabad, killing 47 people.

KARACHI: The first Edhi ambulance reached the site of the PIA plane crash within 10 minutes of the incident.

The narrow streets were a maze of parked cars, plane debris and rubble from damaged houses. Only one car could pass through at a time.

Faisal Edhi, head of the Edhi Foundation, told The News that rescue workers, with the help of the fire brigade, police and Rangers, first looked for people who could be pulled quickly from the debris.

Edhi said that since the street was littered with burning wreckage from the aircraft, most of the rescue work happened from the rooftops of adjacent houses.

He said that volunteers would retrieve an injured or a body from the debris of the houses, move from one rooftop to another, and then shift them down to ambulances waiting in the street.

He said that many of the rescue workers sustained burn wounds while rescuing people, because the fire was everywhere.

He said that when Edhi ambulances reached the site, the Civil Aviation Authority’s fire brigades were already there trying to put out the fire.

Innayatullah, a member of Karachi Municipal Corporation’s (KMC) Fire Brigade department, said that the fire had been declared 'third degree' at the first instance because it involved a plane. He added that it took at least four to five hours for the firefighters to control the blaze.

He added that around three dozen fire brigades, including 12 from KMC, five from Karachi Port Trust, two from Port Qasim Authority and one from Pakistan Steel Mills, were present at the site. Besides them, 12 water tankers of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board were also involved in supplying water.

According to Innayatullah, it may take up to 24 hours or more to cool the debris down because the fire was still emitting from some of the debris.

Hamza Mubin Hasan of the Sindh Boy Scouts Association said there had been two major challenges before the rescue workers: first, the narrow streets littered with the hot debris, and second, the smoke emanating from the wreckage.

He said that it was difficult to breathe and see ahead because of the smoke and they had to move carefully to avoid sustaining burn injuries.

A total of ninety-seven people lost their lives in the Karachi-bound PIA flight. Only two survived the crash — the chief executive of the Bank of Punjab and a young engineer. Thankfully, there were no casualties on the ground.

Model Zara Abid was onboard PK 8303 which crashed in Karachi on its way from Lahore yesterday.

Sindh health officials named two survivors from the 99 passengers present on the PIA A320, who have been identified as Zubair and Zafar Masood. 97 have been confirmed dead.

Zara Abid became a popular name in Pakistan's fashion fraternity winning Best Female Model just this year at the Hum Style Awards.

Abid had worked with every top designer in the industry, starting her career with Sana Safinaz and was gearing up for her cinematic debut in Azeem Sajjad's Chaudhry.

PK 8303 was carrying 91 passengers and 8 crew members from Lahore to Karachi, when it crashed in the residential area of Model Colony near Jinnah International Airport. Eyewitnesses said the Airbus A320 appeared to attempt to land two or three times before crashing in a residential area near the airport.

No fatalities occurred on the ground as PK8303 crashed - as already explained on May 22 by PIA officials the aircraft actually landed on the road and not directly on to any homes - although its wings may have clipped some structures, no homes were destroyed

The Pakistan International Airlines plane crash, just two days ahead of Eid, has sent the country reeling.

The incident, in a year already marred by the virus outbreak and the chaos related to it, has clouded any faint glimmer of happiness offered by the festival of Eid, with the nation sharing the grief of those who lost loved ones.

Many families had been on board the plane, hoping to reunite with loved ones for the Eid holidays.

Hailing from Waheedabad’s Gulbahar area, Waqas and his family lost their lives in the crash.

Their bereaved relatives said that Waqas, his wife Nida and son Aliyaan have already been identified, but two other children have not.

The relatives said that the deceased had been residing in Lahore for the past year.

The funeral prayers of the family will be performed after Zuhar today, they added.

Another citizen, also from Karachi’s Bahadurabad area, was identified as Saleem Qadri. The deceased had gone to Lahore in relation to his work.

Qadri and his son, Osama, both died in the crash, according to their relatives.

The deceased’s relatives said that the bodies were not in a condition to be identified and would be matched by DNA.

Karachi’s Mohammad Bashir was among the victims of the plane crash, his family said. His body has not been identified as yet.

The family members said that the deceased left behind a widow and three children.

Dilshad Begum, a resident of Kharadar, also lost her life in the crash. Her body has been identified, said the son.

Dilshad Begum had gone to Lahore two months ago to meet her children.

Flight Steward Malik Irfan Dhillon’s family contacted the Edhi Foundation’s morgue for information regarding the deceased’s body.

One of his cousins said that they do not have any information about the body as yet and have given their blood samples for a DNA match.

The family members of other deceased plane crew will be brought to Karachi today.

The families of four crew members will depart at 1pm from Lahore to Karachi.

It has been learnt that 48 other passengers, close relatives of the tragedy’s victims, are also coming to Karachi.

PIA has installed a counter at the Lahore airport to guide the bereaved families.

A total 97 people lost their lives in the crash, of which 19 have been identified so far. DNA matching is in process to identify more victims.

The Karachi-bound flight from Lahore had been seconds away from making an emergency landing at the Karachi airport when it crashed in the residential Jinnah Garden area near Model Colony in Malir, right outside the airport's boundary wall.

Ninety-nine were aboard the plane when it crashed into a narrow residential street, dealing significant damage to houses in a densely populated area. Thankfully, there were no deaths on the ground.

Only two survived the crash — the chief executive of the Bank of Punjab and a young engineer.
