What's new

[VIDEOS/PICTURES] Is the end getting close for Azhar Ali's career?

Azhar's struggling badly with his dodgy knees and will fail in this series. Hopefully he'll retire with grace after the series.

Hanging in there ( on 0) so far - needs to play out of his skin today - Captain's knock needed.

Averages 26 in last two and a half years , away average of 11 in 17 innings with only one 50 to his name.

Appointing a declining Azhar as Test captain is a sackable offence alone.

Misbah should face the consequences for this folly. There's only so much we can tolerate.

Everyone knows Azhar Ali is only in the team as he's about the same age as Misbah. It helps Misbah to have someone as captain that he can relate to!

Pathetic batsman. Only in the side because of Misbah's ashirwaad.

It’s very sad.

He was a wholehearted player who did his best, and had a good career.

And, as I wrote in January 2019, Mickey Arthur should have formally ended his career after the South Africa tour. It’s awful watching him destroy his hard-earned reputation by playing on and on and on.

The shot, the review, and the general recent form from Azhar is just abysmal.

Saj pointed out last December in Australia that Azhar keeps getting out the same way.

He always had this technical flaw of playing across the line, but he used to have good enough hand-eye coordination to get into line at the last split-second.

Now he has lost that hand-eye coordination, and he’s a sitting duck against the ball angling into his stumps.

And he can’t redesign his technique at this stage of his career.

He will continue to score some runs in Asia, but outside Asia ita just sad to watch him.

He got the captaincy five years too late. And now Shan Masood will inherit it two years too late.

Azhar is easily controllable.

You just know with the popularity and high level of performances of Babar - when he is captain Misbah will lose power and wouldn't have free run. Very understandable why Misbah would want someone like Azhar over Babar as captain.

We could easily see Kohli/Kumble type scenario with Babar/Misbah.

If azhar has a bad series, than i would prefer if he changes his batting number. Move down to no.5 or 6.

He has scored runs, cant be dropped based on one bad series. He still scores at home pitches and thats good enough for us.

Lets see how he does in the series, didnt do well in today but there are are still many innings left

“One bad series”. Just stop trying

Thats it, done Azhar. You have now entered rock bottom and unfortunately for you the light is withering away. Its TIME!

Call it a day Azhar, you've done as well as you could, its time to look pastures anew.

Babar doesn't seem like that kind of person. He seems quite mature, especially in comparison to some of our star players from the past.

Now England again.

How many consecutive red ball failures outside Asia does it take to get dropped?

He will retire with a batting avg of 37 or 38

Another failure produced by our Cricket management.

Walking wicket for last 3 years, should retire at end of this test series.

Azhar Ali's act of desperation to save himself - reviewed this.

I think Azhar Ali should be dropped if he can't do much in this series. Get Imam in.

He did get a century in pakistan against srilanka.

If he is to be dropped than give him two series to fail atleast. If he fails this series and than the next, than he should be dropped for good.

Ideally, Azhar deserves to be dropped on 2nd test based on his performance over last 2 years, but he is the captain and Babar should not be pressurised to take the responsibility.

Not saying Babar would do something cruddy. But like any other strong captain, he would want to have some influence and say, which wouldn't be good for the current status quo where Misbah is all-powerful.

A single good performance doesn't justify selection when you're had almost 3 years of failures. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Play one of the Akmals or Butt or Ifti or virtually any half-decent batsmen from domestic for 20-30 innings in Test cricket and they'll play 1 or 2 decent innings. Particularly against a weak bowling lineup on a flat wicket at home

Experienced players don’t get dropped down the order after they start regularly flopping. They get dropped so that a new player can be introduced, preferably in the lower order and at home, so that he can be gently eased into the lineup.

If Azhar keeps failing, his time is up.

If Azhar goes then Shafiq should go with him. Both are mentally weak, neither deserves a minute more in the side. We need to move on from this failed post Mis-You batting era and look at guys like Saud Shakeel and Saad Ali to pick up the mantle.

Usman salahuddin and Imam ul haq should be backed to take azhars and asads positions.
Imam at 3 and Usman at 5.

He was once a gritty player who had a very good peak, but his time is up now.

He must be dropped following this series, unless he scores big somehow.

If we are gonna go the route of bring him down the order, I say bring Yasir Shah up at number 3 and put Azhar at 8. Cause these days Yasir Shah is doing better batting than Azhar Ali.

time is running out for azhar He really needs to start performing now He cant go on like this much longer Something has to give

When we had practically batted SL out of the game. Azhar is done. He is averaging 11 outside Asia in the last three years, 26 overall.

The next few series, especially if at home should be used to be to bring in new players.

Misbah or Younis would still score centuries against feeble bowling on dead Asian pitches.

The problem is that Azhar has not for the last 24 months had the hand-eye coordination to survive outside Asia. And this is not loss of form - it's loss of skill as a result of ageing.

To be totally fair though, for the last couple of years outside Asia .............

Azhar Ali has been a better bowler than Yasir Shah!!!!!!

Azhar and Asad Shafiq are both players who are just not good enough to be playing international cricket in this day and age. They haven't been good enough for years. Both need to be replaced immediately.

He hasn’t been the same since 2017, whereas we needed him and Asad to step up after YK and misbah retired after 7+ years of investment these guys crumbled and got worse.

For a moment I read 2017 as 1917 - I suppose feels like that's how long we have been speaking about him!

Why would you replace a 35 year old with a 35 year old?

Because one of those 35 year olds averages 11 outside Asia during a time period when he was supposed to step up and replace YK.

TBH i’ll take a 45+ year old Younis over Azhar smh dude was out here scoring daddy hundreds in his mid 40s in England and Australia.

Lol I haven’t been active here much at all for a while, but I was one to always support Azhar but his performances have just gone down the drain when we needed him to pick it up.

Can’t remember the last great knock he’s played since that 200 against Australia, which feels like ages ago.

Another failure for Azhar - just 18 off 54. He gets dismissed in the same manner, which is worrying.

The 18 today actually improved his average in this stat.

That makes it even better play Azhar as a full time bowler, play Yasir as a part time bowler. Swap there batting positions.

I'm afraid time is running out fast for Azhar Ali. Unless he produces something substantial in the rest of the series, this should be his last.

He and Asad have disappointed us so much as Pakistani fans.

If Shan scores another 100 on tour, I recon he will be next in line to captain Pakistan with Azhar subsequently getting dropped.

They set the standard by dropping Sarfaraz as a non performing captain, Azhar should be no different

Waqar Younis on Azhar Ali's recent form:

"Only Azhar can answer that but being captain and batting in the top order is not easy, he has been captaining for a while now; When you have a bad match then it is highlighted - your brain is working overtime when that happens as I know that because I have been captain myself; You have responsibilities and you have to handle a lot of things and then you have to focus on your batting as well; If we had won this match, his performance would not have been highlighted and he would have got encouragement because he would have won a match"

"He's a seasoned player with 80 odd Tests, he has scored in England as well and he knows how to come out of these situations, and this is not the first time this situation has happened for him and I am very hopeful that he will deliver in this Test and in the upcoming 3rd Test also"

Nasser Hussain on commentary calling Azhar Ali a walking lbw....

One half century this series and he’ll secure his place for the next 1-1.5 years as a Test captain.

After a long fighting innings, captain Azhar departs for 20 (85). Still no big score that management have been talking about for Azhar.

These types of cricketers actually have fans? These meek, untalented cricketers are one of the major causes of the decline of our cricket

Whilst Azhar recent form has been poor , calling him meek and untalented is embarrassing and shameful at the same time .

Shows how ignorant some fans can be that they let their hatred or discontent towards a player allow them to totally disregard what a player has done in his career.

Disgusting.

Nope, he'll be around for another four to six years whether you like it or not. :butt :uakmal

Think you’ll have to re-evaluate this statement. Unfortunately as we get older, we loose hand eye coordination.

He has been brilliant for us over the last few years but I think the curtain is closing and the end is nearing

This clown was famous for his anti-babar propaganda and swore by his good boys; Azhar and Asad.
Poor guy, or maybe he was really smart and wanted to subscribe to daily free deliveries of pies, tomatoes and eggs.
Great foresight on his part.
Now he sure will never go hungry, even in this covid economic climate.
