Thunder has boosted its squadron of pace bowlers by adding Pakistan’s 20-year-old T20I speed sensation Muhammad Hasnain to the club’s roster

Sydney Thunder has boosted its squadron of pace bowlers for this summer’s assault on KFC Big Bash League by adding Pakistan’s 21-year-old T20I speed sensation Muhammad Hasnain to the club’s roster.

He joins a Thunder squad which already boasts quality pace bowlers Daniel Sams, Ben Cutting, Saqib Mahmood, Chris Tremain, Nathan McAndrew, Gurinder Sandhu, and Brendan Doggett.

In 2019 Hasnain declared his arrival as a future star in 2019 when, at just 19, he entered the sport’s record books as the youngest bowler to take a hattrick in a T20I match. The paceman from Hyderabad achieved that feat against Sri Lanka.

In the same year, Hasnain lit up both the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) by bowling the fastest deliveries recorded in each competition. He launched a 151 km/h rocket for the Quetta Gladiators, and a 155.1 km/h rocket for Trinbago Knight Riders.

While he’s already renowned for his speed, Hasnain also enjoys a healthy reputation for his unerring accuracy.

According to Thunder’s Ben Cutting, who played alongside the youngster at Quetta, Hasnain is certain to ‘hurry up’ plenty of BBL batters - if given the opportunity.

“He bowls fast; easily at 150 km/h,” said Cutting. “He’s a lovely young kid, and his team back home is keen for him to learn about the game and to also come out here and bowl fast.

“Muhammad is going to love bowling in Australia. We have faster pitches and bigger boundaries - conditions that are far more conducive to bowling fast than they are in Pakistan.

“I have no doubt he’s going to enjoy the experience, and I know he’ll be a tremendous addition to Sydney Thunder’s squad.”

CNSW Head of Male Cricket, Michael Klinger, described Hasnain as a player who is certain to excite the Thunder Nation.

He’s a fast bowler who bowls with extreme pace and has fantastic T20 skills and variations,” said Klinger ahead of Hasnain’s arrival.

“At such a young age he’s already taken a T20I hattrick for Pakistan, and he’s performed well for Quetta in the Pakistan Super League.”

Really good opportunity for him to work a bit in a culture which is also known for fast bowlers but, go about it in a slightly different way.

Change can be good for him as so far his growth in domestic cricket as well as at the international level hasn't been as much as coaches would have expected and he personally would have aimed for. However, he is still a young guy though competition is and will be further tough in coming days.

I hope he can learn a thing or two about fast bowling from this experience.

He is currently not up to international standards.

According to the commentators on BT sports this is so Saqib Mahmood can be released to the Ashes squad.

Nice to see Hasnain get selected. Hopefully, he can make a name for himself in Australia.

A couple of wickets in Aus and I expect to see him picked for the WT20 over the likes of Dahani and Wasim Jnr.

Hopefully this tournament goes well for him. But more importantly, hopefully he learns a few tricks in Aus.

Do people really think Hasnain will do good? He is going to get thrashed in pretty much every match...

I feel for Hasnain, he gets fast-tracked to the national team, gets thrashed in almost every single match he plays, he never changes anything. It looked like Waqar never helped him on anything at all. He keeps skipping first class.

Never mind this T20 nonsense.

He has taken just 7 wickets in the QeA Trophy at an average of over 50 - awful numbers. They should be working with him at the NHPC. not sending him to the BBL.

Hasnain has the tools to become a good quality international bowler, however his inability to set-up batsmen is hampering his progress.

Also he has somehow ended up losing a yard of pace, when he was easily Pakistan’s fastest bowler of the current batch.

he needs a mentor, he not the person who can figure out itself, he needs guidance - that can only come from a Pakistani bowler - who can mature him up - he doesn't understand a word of English - so philander cant help him

nor should it be Shoaib Akhtar - as clearly his stunts on live t.v shows he hasn't grown up / waqar just says I'll bowl him up in 4 deliveries - back in my day, azar mahmood isn't good enough / mo asif in america - shouldn't be allowed in Pakistan setup - just leaves akram or maybe gul

The problem with him is that he has no variations, he just goes in trying to be fast with no rhyme or reason... and he never out smarts or out thinks a batsman... hence bowling very predictable deliveries/lines/lengths... and just has that wry smile on his face after getting hit for boundry after boundry... I hope he goes down there and literally eats the brains of the coaches and absorbs all that he can. He can be a great asset as long as he uses variations and stays 2 steps ahead of a batsman...

armchair coach here, I see some things from his action:
- front leg collapses way too much, more than anyone else I noticed. An easy fix for a young guy
- action is mixed, either get fully side on or front on. Very hard to bowl consistently quick with his action. Seems like he is falling away rather than turning in to the leap
- runup is forced and runs in way too hard, rather than building up speed.

Its his FC performance that needs work. He is still young and coachable, needs 12 months of work on his action and rhythm and mindset before he's close to being ready

No sign of Hasnain at the moment for Thunder.

It's good to see crowd getting behind hasnain.
He obviously has good the good which can't be learned.

Fantastic start. Was hoping he’d register quicker on the generous Australian speed guns :akhtar

And someone who is genuinely his age lol!
I wish I was at this match instead of Sydney smash!

Great stuff.

Is this the exposure Hasnain needs to add more variety to his bowling?

The totally irrelevant obsession with age from some posters here is past the cringe stage to being ridiculous!! 🤦🏽*♂️🤦🏽*♂️🤷🏽*♂️🙄

Looks more leaner then ever , hope this gives him the confidence to keep bowling quick

Invaluable experience for Husnain I thought he regressed a little last year but this could set him right back up and hopefully have a positive effect like it did on rauf

He has all the ingredients to be successful on Australian tracks

Him and Shaheen both

One thing hasnain is being backed up here by some amazing fielding , keeps pressure on the batsmen and keeps his tail up, seen to many times with pak where our fielders let our bowlers down after they’ve done the work to pin the batsmen down

All three wickets

Great stuff from Hasnain.

Needed this as he hasn't been at his best recently.

Good pace today also.

Consistently around the 90mph mark.

Finishes on 3/20 in 4 overs, including one maiden!

Hello and welcome to the Big Bash League, Mohammad Hasnain.

The 21-year-old Pakistan international on Sunday night produced the best ever over by a BBL debutant, taking three wickets and conceding no runs in the Sydney Thunder’s 28-run win over the Adelaide Strikers.

After the Strikers managed a leg bye off his first ball, Hasnain struck, with Matt Short caught at deep backward square leg by Daniel Sams.

Next delivery, fellow opener Jake Weatherald was beaten by Hasnain’s pace and trapped on the pad LBW.

Jono Wells saw off the hat-trick ball but then fell to Hasnain a delivery later, with his attempted pull shot only finding veteran Ben Cutting at short mid-wicket.

Young Striker Henry Hunt survived the last ball of the over — just. Hasnain sent down a stunning, full, swinging ball that narrowly missed Hunt’s outside edge.

Nonetheless, the momentum of the Strikers’ run chase had swung dramatically, going from 0-25 to 3-25 within six balls where Hasnain reached speeds of up to 149km/hr.

Understandably, Hasnain received a brilliant ovation from the Thunder fans at Sydney Showgrounds or his triple-wicket maiden, while his heroics also blew cricket pundits away.

“I don’t know what to say, this is phenomenal to watch,” former Aussie fast bowler Brett Lee told Fox Cricket.

“It just goes to show about raw pace. A beautiful approach to the crease, wonderful seam presentation, a lovely snap of the wrist – any young bowler that wants to bowl fast, they’re the three components you need.”

Former England bowler Isa Guha said it “has to be the best BBL debut of all time”.

“This is extraordinary stuff … He came in Christmas night. He has been away from his team because they have been in a Covid bubble. He gets his opportunity this evening. First time meeting his colleagues and he has picked up three wickets for none.”

Star batter Usman Khawaja led the praise on social media, suggesting Hasnain was “bowling rockets”, while others suggested there was a touch of Scott Boland Ashes debut about the Pakistani’s BBL performance.

Hasnain finished his allotted four overs with the figures of 3-20 — a spell that included an impressive 14 dot balls.

Only Nielsen got hold of Hasnain, conjuring one four and one six from the 13th over — and the four only came about due to a poor piece of fielding by Arjun Nair on the boundary.

Hasnain, who’s played 18 T20I matches for his country and is the youngest bowler to ever take a T20I hat-trick, was only signed by the Thunder just before Christmas.

Cutting first came across Hasnain while playing for the Pakistan Super League’s Quetta Gladiators in 2020.

The year prior, Hasnain set the record for the fastest delivery in both that tournament and the Caribbean Super League.

Cutting warned that Aussie batters could struggle to contain the youngster’s explosive pace.

“He bowls fast; easily at 150 km/h,” he said.

“He’s a lovely young kid, and his team back home is keen for him to learn about the game and to also come out here and bowl fast.”

Hasnain would be a good backup bowler to have for next T20 edition in Australia. Personally I would utilise Hasnain as follows: 1 over in PP, 2 in middle and 1 in death.

Hasnain has been a good middle overs bowlers but struggles at death and sometimes at the start. If he can work on those weaknesses and eradicate his issues at death then he can be a good edition in this team.

Lastly Hasnain has not been a good fielder so if he wants to come back into this team his fielding especially catching needs to improve massively. If he cannot improve his fielding then I would prefer him to stay away from this team. I would not want another drop at a crucial time in a knockout game.

Something Pakistan never will have

Really happy to see him do so well. I hope he learns alot from this stint in Australia and comes back an improved bowler.

Hasnain any day of the week over Hassan Ali.

Then if Hasnain got smashed to bits (as he did a few weeks ago by a bunch of kids) ya”ll cynics would be saying he too raw.

Hasan Ali may have jobbed but the bloke had a decent record in limited overs and can smash a few at the death, would be hard to replace him with a raw potato :yk3

Lol keep this Sami 2.0 spray gun for these circus leagues.. pak give opposition 35 run head start with him in the team !!

Don't think we should read too much into performances in these franchise leagues, the step up in class in international cricket is significant, as we have witnessed with Hasnain's performances quite often.

Any body but Hasan Ali in T20, even at domestic level. Because of his lack of height and pace batsmen don;t respect him in T20 where they play attacking cricket. He is good for test and OK for ODI. We lost T20 WC mainly because of him and failure of Babar to realize that.

Good to see Hasnain in news at BBL. He has the potential but never been a confident bowler and this has been a hurdle in his progress and lack of consistency . Performance like this will add up his confidence.

Pace does matter, Hasan Ali's disastrous performance in T20 WC proved that. Pace particularly matters on the bouncy tracks down under. Imagine a pace trio of Shaeen, Rauf and an inform and confident Hasnain in next T20 WC, backed by Wasim or Arshad Iqbal, will be handful.

Hasnain any day of the week over Hassan Ali.

I know people like to think Hasan Ali is bad at T20's but he is not. His SR and bowling average in T20's are quite good. He is also pretty expensive but nothing crazy out of the ordinary.

Hasnain might be better long-term but he has a long way to go. Often times he is bowling without a plan and has zero variations to speak of. Extremely awful death bowler as well.

I think Hasnain sort of needs to figure out what is he as a bowler. A useful bowler in PP? In death? Economical? Or a Sami spray gun 2.0? Hopefully he continues doing really well in BBL and puts himself in conversation for a WC spot.

Saj , could you please bring this to someone's notice? One commentator had similar apprehensions and expressed her views on live tv today.

Random but why are many of the players doing the ‘air/ non-contact’ high-fives to hasnain? Is there some context there

Seriously? How does that make sense for the team. He high fives some and not others.

And some don’t high five him but then high five others a second later.

His team had multiple positive covid cases a few days ago. The previous game was only allowed to go ahead on the condition that the players stay separate from each other during the game. From the looks of things I'm assuming that condition has since been officially relaxed but presumably a few of them were still being a little cautious.

It still makes no sense. 30 second mark Green does the air high five to hasnain, then immediately high fives other players then pats hasnain on the back and touches his hair…

Anyway not a big deal but found it strange.

Pakistan has a batch of some very exciting young fast bowlers. Hasnain today been very impressive.

His second wicket and last ball were beauties. I guess he has a good outswinger to RHBs.

I watched the recording of his whole spell, it was brilliant , all 4 overs. Other than one six he conceded , most of the runs he gave away were due to misfielding . He had pace and was accurate and above all, he bowled at 'test match length' as per the commentator.

Wait, so Mohammad Hasnain can’t travel with the squad due to border restrictions but Alex Hales, who recently tested positive can travel? It just seems a bit nonsensical.

Queensland require 14 days isolation for international arrivals whereas NSW only require a negative RAT test after arrival. Hasnain therefore can't travel to Queensland until those 14 days isolation would be up if he had entered directly.
