Sussex Cricket is extremely excited to announce the signing of Pakistani wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan for the majority of the 2022 season.

Mohammad will join Sussex following Australia’s tour of Pakistan that concludes in early April. He will then be available in both Championship and T20 cricket until the end of the Vitality Blast in mid-July.

As well as being regarded as one of the most accomplished ‘keepers in the world, the 29-year-old from Peshawar also has a formidable batting record in all formats.

In first-class cricket, Mohammad averages over 43 with the bat, including nearly 1,000 runs in 19 Test matches at an average of over 42.

He enjoyed significant success in English conditions during Pakistan’s three-match Test series in 2020, averaging over 40, being named Pakistan’s player of the series and being described by Nasser Hussain as “the best for a long, long time” when it came to touring wicketkeepers.

Keeping

In 54 T20Is, Mohammad averages a stunning 50.06 with the bat at a strike-rate of 126.6. He has enjoyed a stellar 2021, becoming the first batter to score over a thousand T20I runs in a calendar year and surpassed Chris Gayle’s six-year-old record for the most T20 runs scored in a calendar year.

He was also the third highest run-scorer in the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, scoring 281 runs in six innings as Pakistan made it to the semi-finals, and is now ranked by the ICC as the world’s fourth best batter in men’s T20Is.

Mohammad was full of positivity after signing for Sussex, sending this message to the club’s supporters:
“Dear Sussex Family, assalamu alaikum. I am absolutely honoured and excited to be a part of the historic Sussex County Cricket Club for the 2022 season. I have always heard great things about the Sussex community and this family club was always close to my heart.

“In my heart, I know our young team has the potential to beat any team. Our strength lies in our hard work, honesty, deep commitment, and self-belief: we can win, we will win, and we will play like champions, no matter what! In shaa Allah, I look forward to a great season.”

T20

Ian Salisbury, Sussex’s Championship and One-Day Head Coach, said: “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t really disappointed to learn we’d be losing a player of Ben Brown’s quality. Now that has happened, though, we have to look forward and I’m delighted that we’ve been able to act quickly over the last week or so to secure the services of one of the world’s best keeper-batters as a replacement.

“Mohammad’s first-class and Test records speak for themselves and it’s a huge coup to welcome him to Sussex for a big chunk of next season’s Championship. As well as his playing credentials, it’s clear from speaking to people like Mushy [Mushtaq Ahmed] and Saqlain [Mushtaq] that Mohammad will also be a wonderful addition to the dressing room.

“He and Travis [Head] are exactly the kind of experienced, international cricketers that our emerging lads can learn a huge amount from. Oli [Carter] has mentioned in the past how Mohammad is a big hero of his, so he is particularly excited. We all are, to be honest. It’s fantastic news and we can now get on with preparations for next summer with key positions filled.”

James Kirtley, Sussex’s T20 Head Coach, added: “Sussex are incredibly lucky to secure the services of Mohammad Rizwan. There is only a select number of players that have scored centuries in all three formats. On top of this he averages around 40 in all formats at an impressive strike rate. Couple this with his ability to keep wicket and he is one of the most exciting cricketers in the world. He will be an excellent replacement at the top of the order and with the gloves in our Blast team and I am extremely pleased to be filling that gap with an international player of his calibre.

“As important as his performances are on the pitch, we needed to be sure Mohammad would be right for our environment. During our extensive research there was resounding support from those that know him. He is a natural leader and a player who will inspire. I am very much looking forward to welcoming him to Sussex as the latest in a long line of successful cricketers that have played for Pakistan and Sussex.”

wow big coup for sussex but also brilliant opportunity for rizwan to further his skills. Sussex is a brilliant community club , mushy is still regarded as a legend in these parts so seems like the perfect fit for both player and club

Good stuff.

FC cricket has shown to transform non-English players from 'good' to 'elite' in a matter of one to two seasons: from Wasim, Waqar, Tendulkar and Dravid in the past, to Pujara, Ashwin, Ishant, Zaheer and now Rizwan today.

Great news and hopefully it will help him develop.

Have there been any offers for Shirjeel Khan out of interest?

Agreed!

Its strange though because the county sides are packed with club level jobbers. Yet Asian players seem to benefit tremendously. Perhaps its down to the fact they are exposed to different styles of coaching and dressing room atmospheres.

Will no doubt help Rizwans batting by exposing him to tougher pitches than hes used to back home.

HUGE NEWS. Great for Rizwan this, he'll improve and get better playing in county cricket.

It's more to do with the conditions than the fellow players IMO. Somehow, they make for a fine finishing school for a sub-continental cricketer to perform well in SENA.

There's something in the conditions for everyone down South.

They're decent pitches to bat on but if you bend your back as a pacer you'll find assistance, and spinners like Mushy obviously enjoyed bowling there.

Good move. Nice part of the country too.

Great signing.

Sussex have always liked Pakistani overseas players - Imran Khan, Mushy, Yasir Arafat, Rana Naved etc

I'm sure he'll do well.

Fantastic news for the GOAT modern keeper, this is an amazing opportunity and great for sussex to

I am a bit concerned at this signing.

County cricket is not as competitive as it used to be, and i dont want our main guy to burn out.

This will further improve Rizwan's game. To polish his game a stint at county Cricket will be beneficial.

Pakistan barely play as much Test cricket like other nations. FC cricket in England is still of a very high standard and more importantly, the domestic structure and coaching/management set up is of an elite sporting nature so that is an added benefit off the field.

I guess so. But Rizwan is a wicket keeper and playing an entire season of county cricket can take a toll on an international player who plays all 3 formats.

Even the England players who are part of the international team set up play a selection of county games to keep them match ready.

I hope Rizwan is well looked after. County impacted the bodies of players like Mushi and Saqi due to bowling marathon spells, season after season.

Following the re-arrangement of the Pakistan v West Indies one day series for early June we expect to have Mohammad Rizwan for the early part of the Championship season and at least eight of the Blast group games.

He will arrive from the current Pakistan v Australia test series in time for the second round of the Championship staring on 14th April. To ensure we have the strongest squad available for the remaining Blast matches and Championship matches during this period we have signed Australian batter/keeper Josh Philippe.

Awkward moment for Rizwan, will he want to coach the female cricketers at Sussex?

i just read Pujara signed for Sussex for whole of season so how does Rizwan fit in

The standard of cricket in counties is ok.It is the different types of pitches and weather which makes batting difficult at times. It is a good experience for subcontinent players to play in these conditions.

Interesting..

We could probably see Pujara and Rizwan batting together. Or are there any restrictions on number of overseas players?

Early season in the County Championship - tricky conditions but if you want someone to face that sort of challenge, it has to be Rizwan.

Couldn't be happier that so many Pakistani cricketers are playing County these days. Rizwan will benefit massively from this stint with Sussex.

Would be cool to see him and Pujara bat together too, if playing more than one overseas player is allowed.

I think English county rules have changed so playing two overseas players at a time is allowed. Which means Pujara and Rizwan will be playing together and possibly even batting together soon.

All set to make his debut on Thursday against Derbyshire.

2 of Multan Sultans finest - Rizwan v Shan.

Warwickshire are in Division One whereas Sussex are in Division Two so I don't think Sussex will be playing any matches at Edgbaston.

Riz debut likely along with Pujara also

Cheteshwar Pujara and Mohammad Rizwan became the 150th and 151st players to receive their Sussex County Caps before making their debuts against Derbyshire today.

With over 95 Test matches and 6700 first class runs to his name, Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara signed for Sussex to play in both the LV= Insurance County Championship and Royal London Cup. Pujara brings a wealth of cricketing experience having played at the top for over 10 years, averaging 43.87 in Test matches and 50.59 in First-Class cricket.

Pakistan international Mohammad Rizwan is widely regarded as one of the best wicket-keeper batters in world cricket and is currently the vice-captain of the Pakistan Test team. Rizwan has had a meteoric rise to the top of the game in the past two years, a rise that arguable began when he was voted player of the series in against England in a Test series in 2020.

As well as the LV= Insurance County Championship, Rizwan will represent Sussex Sharks in the T20 Vitality Blast.

Both overseas players not only bring world-class attributes on the field but have also been recognised for their contributions to dressing rooms off the field, a key factor in the decision for Sussex to sign them for the 2022 season, but also in the decision to award them the prestigious County Caps.

Commenting on the decision to award Pujara and Rizwan their caps, Performance Director, Keith Greenfield said: “Both Puj and Rizwan certainly surpass the criteria required to be awarded a County Cap at Sussex. Pujara is an extremely experienced cricketer with nearly 100 tests to his name, and Rizwan is a hugely important figure for Pakistan, which is reflected by his appointment as their Test vice-captain.

“Off the field they are both already showing what great people they are and I know they will have a positive influence on the rest of the team.”

Head Coach, Ian Salisbury added: “It is not only an honour to have such world-class cricketers in our side, but it is also a huge honour to be able to recognise their standing and achievements in the game by awarding both Puj and Rizwan their County Caps.

“I am so excited to have them both around, as are the rest of the team and I am looking forward to seeing the impact they have on and off the field.”

Wishing Chezwan all the best.

Two of the nicest players around.

Out for 22 on debut.

Sussex struggling too.

Rizwan was not at his best today.Sussex lost early wickets which didn’t help lower order.

Good day behind the stumps for Rizwan, 4 catches

Let's see how this county stint turns out for Rizwan.

would be good to see a few hundreds from him.

Too much recent white ball cricket. Playing away from his body to a ball well outside off.

It's his first innings in England though so hopefully he'll adjust.

It'll be a good test this for Rizwan at Sussex.

The wickets early season won't be like what he's experienced previously so it'll be a good opportunity for him to work on a couple of weaknesses in his batting.

Golden duck today for Rizwan against Worcestershire.

Golden duck today. Pretty sure he is fasting while playing and with iftaar time pretty late in UK, he is not helping his body.

Hard to imagine Riz succeeding in English conditions with his technique and batting style. I think this going to be a tough outing for him at Worcs.

He played 1 ball how can you blame him fasting for this.

What's the # of balls played got to do with anything? During fasting, the body can't perform at an optimal level, so it very much is possible that he got out because he wasn't 100%.

However, without knowing if he's fasting or not, one shouldn't make a judgement.

He was very good in the test series against England in 2020 so he can succeed against England in England but will struggle at county level great logic in this.

Rizwan is having a slight loss of form since Karachi test but nothing major to worry yet

Didn't you see the performance of Mane and Salah and the two fighters who were fighting in the UFC ?

Out for 4.

Batting wise he's having an awful time in the county cricket. Probably the worst Pakistani player in county this season as far as performance of this year is concerned.

It's all good. Rizwan can only be learning a lot from this experience and that's what his stint is all about.

Perhaps it's a lazy shot, but this is more because since he played so much T20 cricket last year, where he scores 95% + of his runs using the leg side sweep shot, his weakness on the offside is starting to grow more and more.

Only Sharjeel and Fakhar play on the leg side

i agree, the Stint with Pujara will also help. Hopefully they send him in at 5 rather than 6 which could give him more batting time

The solution with Rizwan is to always promote him up the order if he is failing in a position.

Did you even watch the 2020 series? Rizwan was one of the best batters in the entire series.

I did. It's not even fair to call those 3 test matches a series given the amount of cricket that was played. Riz had, what, 2 half centuries? Nothing to get too excited about. Best batter in the "entire" series when we struggled to complete even one full game!

There couldn't be a more incorrect statement than that. Rizwan is one of THE MOST legside heavy player going around.

Lets see if he can make something of his start - needs a good innings.

Well judging by how deluded your opinions on cricket tend to be, I am not surprised to see that you think Rizwan can't make it in England based on "his technique and batting style".

BTW care to explain why his technique and batting style is not good for English conditions or are you just going to make a blanket statement without offering any analysis?

For the record, many people believed Dean Elgar's 'technique and batting style' was not good for England or any other country really. And today he is one of the best test openers in the world who regularly features for Surrey in the county Championship.

Yeah, you think way too highly of yourself if you think I care for your judgment on my opinion on cricket. Maybe if I go on a blaberring rampage about how Ramiz Raja was so destructive to Pak cricket because of the pitches, I could redeem myself in your esteemed mind?

Anyhow, I never said "Rizwan can't make it in England...". I said it's hard to imagine. I feel that a player like Rizwan, that heavily relies on one side of the wicket to score around ~90% of his runs, would find it difficult to succeed in English condition where cross batted shots are much harder to execute than in the subcontinent. Rizwan hardly scores any runs through the offside or in the V, except against spinners which you don't really face a lot of in Eng.

Yeah, when I don't care about someone's opinion I always make sure to use 3 lines telling them that.

But sticking to the topic, Rizwan heavily relies on one side of the wicket? Are you sure you are watching the same Rizwan as all of us?

Rizwan is a very busy player who plays all around the wicket. If anything his favorite shot is the pull shot he plays towards backward square leg. Every player is dominant towards one side. Does not necessarily mean they are a 'leg-side' or 'off-side' player. Also, any particular site/organization/person you can attribute that '~90% of his runs' stat to or is that another figment of your imagination aswell?

Btw, Rizwan scored 79 today so I imagine you must be quite shocked. Ofcourse had you looked at the fact that he already averaged 40 in 4 innings in England maybe this would not have been such a shock.

Needed that innings today, but he'll be disappointed in the way he got out. It was a nothing ball and a century was there for the taking.

Hes a quality player so was always gonna come good after a few innings

His issues of not moving feet and playing across the line stem from playing too much t20 cricket lately

In early season english county cricket youve got to play more orthodox and straighter down the wkt which he seems to have done this innings
