[VIDEOS] Sanju Samson - Discussion Thread

Sanju Samson must come in ODI and T20....time is right for him...he has natural talent and a sound technique to go by...with the right direction he can be next Rohit Sharma...he has that lazy elegance that Rohit possess...

He can score as many hundreds as he want but most fans want Pant in the team because he is the chosen one and deserves to play at least 80 ODI matches before he gets dropped. :inti

For test, the next in line is K Bharat from Andhra. He is a regular in 'A ' team and will replace saha as natural successor. He is a solid middle order bat too ( unlike saha).

For ODI & T20, the fight is three way between Pant, Samson and Kishan. Hvaing watched pant and Kishan, they seems more of hack and strictly suited to t20 at best while Samson though not having great List A numbers feels have longer legs to succeed in white ball cricket.

Samson, I feel, is a natural talent and some players need bigger stageto shine. At IPl level, he always plays blinders and put everybody in awe of him. But when he plays for Kerala before empty stadium, he doesn't seem interested enough. So somebody picks him and put it straight to Indian cricket team environment. He can be a next gen diamond.

No one is getting picked in the indian team with a FC average of 37. His List A average is 28 and his ipl performances aren't great, he's not gotten into the top 10 run scorers in any of the 7 seasons he has played ipl, he is a mediocre player who plays a good innings once in bluemoon.

74 in 32 balls! What an innings by Samson.

Amazing hitting.

He is actually more like Rohit ,that lazy elegance
Has tremendous power game as well, equally effective against quicks ,but lacks consistency that too like Rohit of early years, but if he's given a longer rope like Rohit he too will come good

The thing is Rohit always had good stats in domestic cricket even though he struggled in initial years of international cricket. With Samson, he plays 2-3 good knocks in every IPL season, and goes missing the rest of the year. Not worth the investment unless he shows consistency.

Yes exactly , selection for Indian team goes through domestic performance where he lacks consistency, seldomly you will find guys getting selected on basis of IPL performance, its just a platform to showcase your skills

Why is Piyush Chawla still playing? Isn't he crap for a long time now?

Needs a monster season with 600+ runs to get a proper run in the Indian team. In the past, he's had a couple of really strong games in the IPL before tapering off. With Rahane gone, he will get a consistent run in the top 3 in RR batting unit, that should help him.

What differentiates him from Pant is his ability to play straight and hold his posture while going for big shots. Both have a place in our LOI units. Upto the team management to use them the best and not rely on the seniors.

Eagerly waiting for the Malayalee boy to become a regular in the Indian team. We already had a malayalee bowler (Sreesanth) but he suffered from schizophrenia unfortunately.

Ipl is Sanju Samson's forte but even there pant is ahead.
If we talk about first class and list A there's absolutely no comparison.
Best young batsman.. Lol, the day someone like samson is our best young batsman cricket in india will be at an all time low.

Pant was hacking and playing ugly shots. Samson is a better batsman.

Sachin notices that Pant is not what Samson could be.. but again he blew his chances but we defn do need a player in the middle order.

Spin legend Shane Warne on Saturday expressed his "surprise" that wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson is not playing for India across formats.

Samson smashed a 32-ball 74 against Chennai Super Kings to power Rajasthan Royals to a 16-run win in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Tuesday.

Warne praised the 25-year-old player after his exploits.

"Sanju Samson, what a player he is. I have said for a long time and I think Sanju Samson is probably one of the most exciting players I have seen for a long time. I am surprised that he is not playing all forms of cricket for India," said Warne in an Instagram live session of Rajasthan Royals.

The Australian legend added, "He is that good. He is an absolute champion he is got all the shots, quality, and class.

"So, hopefully, he has a consistent year and helps Rajasthan Royals lift the IPL trophy and I hope to see in him Indian colours in all three forms of cricket."

Against CSK, Samson reached his fifty off just 19 deliveries and won the Man-of-the- Match award for his knock, which helped Rajasthan Royals post a commanding 216 for seven in their allotted 20 overs.

His knock was studded with nine sixes.

In recent times, KL Rahul has cemented his place as the number one wicketkeeper-batsman in the Indian team for the limited overs format, pipping Rishabh Pant.

He should be play at 4 in T20I, Iyer is solid but what Samson gives you is extra grear that Iyer doesn't have.

He has not had even one bumper domestic season. Pant, Iyer, Agarwal, Rahul have bossed FC and List A/India A cricket for multiple seasons before making it to the team.

In-form Rajasthan Royals batsman Sanju Samson on Sunday said he has been timing the ball really well for the last one year but was left frustrated after some of the things that he tried didn’t work out.

Samson hit quickfire 74 and 85 in the last two innings, scoring a total of 159 runs at an average of 79.50.

“I have been hitting it well for the past one year. So I was just sticking to my routine and feeling confident. I am happy to win a few games,” Samson said after helping the Royals beat Kings XI Punjab by four wickets.

“I was trying hard but things were not happening. I did a lot of soul searching after being frustrated at trying stuff. Then I worked hard.

“I asked myself what do I need to achieve? I told myself I have 10 years of this wonderful game in me, and I have to give everything to these 10 years.”

He hit seven sixes and four boundaries in his 42-ball 85 that kept the Royals in the hunt while chasing the target of 224.

Talking about his power-hitting, he said: “The power comes from genes. My father is a very powerful man.”

The Royals skipper Steve Smith heaped praise on Samson.

“Sanju is striking the ball cleanly all over the ground. Taking pressure off everyone,” Smith said.

Smith also praised Rahul Tewatia, who turned the match on its head with five sixes in the 18th over off Sheldon Cottrell.

“That was something else, wasn’t it? What we have seen from Tewatia in the nets is what we saw in that Cottrell over. I told someone as along as he gets one, floodgates will open. He showed heart.

“He told me during the timeout we still believe, Three sixes of Shami, three off Cottrell. Jofra again. First four balls sixes the other night. First two tonight.”

Mayank Agarwal (106) and KL Rahul (69) had earlier shared a 183-run opening stand and it seemed at one time that KXIP would cross the 250-mark.

Smith credited the bowlers for controlling things in the end.

“Looked like we could be chasing over 250 at one point, credit to the bowlers for pulling things back,” he said.

KXIP skipper Rahul said his players can keep their chin up despite the loss, saying it was just a bad day and it was good that it came early in the tournament.

“Look, this is T20 cricket, we have seen it so many years now, we did a lot of things right, we have to keep our chin up and come back stronger,” he said.

“A lot of positives tonight, we did a lot of things right, but such things do happen, great game of cricket, we have to give it to them (Rajasthan Royals).”

Chasing a stiff 224 for a win, the Royals needed 51 runs from the last three overs but Tewatia turned the match on its head with five sixes off Sheldon Cottrell in the 18th over, which yielded 30 runs.

“The game keeps you humble all the time, I honestly did think we had the game in our pocket. Towards the end they batted well and put pressure on our bowlers which led to mistakes,” Rahul said.

“I back them to do the job, they have done well in the last two games, it’s OK to have one bad game. It’s good that this came early in the tournament, they will only learn from this and come back strongly.”

Keep in mind that both of RR's matches so far have been at Sharjah. Both matches broke records of sixes hit and highest chase. Sanju is a good six-hitter but jury is still out on his temperament. Domestic record reveals all.

He hasn't shown consistency even in IPL so two good innings in a row is a rarity even for him. Maybe this is the season he finally gets to the next level.

I have soft spot for talented underachievers so I love :afridi type players but they don't do well in teams that are expected to win more often than not. Hope sanju has steped up and proves that with Kerala.

Steady decline since that excellent start

Below doesnt include 5 he made vs DC today

Going the same way as last few seasons, some good knocks but overall an average run. Needs to turnaround soon else will continue to be find himself out of the team.

Lol, was bound to happen. He doesn't
ever show the consistency required to propel him to the national team.

After watching him for many years in the IPL , I can see why India haven't given him a regular run at international level. He has the talent but lacks the consistency and mentality for international cricket.

People watch one IPL inning or highlight package of a random domestic match and want that player in the national team asap. They don't even bother reading general overall stats let alone watching whole domestic matches.

People who know Indian domestic cricket know what Sanju is capable of. We are waiting for him to go to the next level for years. His Ranji team(Kerala) improved but he has remained the same. A good player with major issues.

I think if he was from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, or Pakistan he would be playing international cricket. India expect a lot more from their batsmen.

He is still 25, there is time for him to turn it around. Don't see him playing tests but if he can work on his consistency he could play LO for India.

Acha jee

So who does this bloke think he is?

Don’t think he has any seriousness or responsible attitude towards his franchise and team. Does he think he is on a free/paid holiday in UAE with his soft dismissal after soft dismissal. So disappointing, a bigger let down than Umar Akmal!

No way he will get ahead of rizwan. Take them blue tinted glasses off the guy averages around 30 in list A

Another IPL hack is he?

Let him have a blast April and May every year. Don't give him any international chances please.

As I said, Sanju has remained the player he was at 19. Normies(not you) watch one IPL match and want any tom dick and harry in Indian national team.

The commentators keep talking about why isn't he selected at international level. Why do they never mention his average of 37 after 55 first class games? The question should be why has he only played 55 first class games at 25? And why is his average only 37?

I think he has the talent but his problem is mental. If he can sort that out he could play for India. But it's a really big question mark if he can sort it out.

I used to have such high hopes from him.

He has 2 issues:

1. Very little game awareness on what to do and when.

2. His game outside of hitting sixes needs work. He has oodles of talent but it's just that...talent.

He could have EASILY piled on a lot of runs this IPL and made the Indian squad but his above 2 weaknesses robbed him of a golden opportunity.

Sansón had some insane shots when he came on. Drifted a bit once he hit the scene. Still young, might be able to make a come back. He has done for ipl. Just not international level yet for india . If he was pakistani he would have been a regular . India batting is very strong. Plus bench is strong. Yurav would have still been playing if he was pakistani.

blew it away once again...

started so well but then failure after failure...

break my heart every time...so insane talent but its going to be wasted...

also with Rahul as our permanent white ball keeper, samson or pant will be warming the bench anyways....

Rahul is on another level- even ahead of Kohili and Rohit in T20.

- his demeanor
- his physique
- his attitude
- his temperament

All trash. He is just not good enough. Poor player. He has to improve a lot and fgs stop smiling.

Great 54* (31) from Samson today in support of Stokes as part of an unbeaten 152 run partnership between the 2.

Sanju Samson among 6 players to fail BCCI's new 2-km run fitness test, to be given another chance

The Indian cricket team soared to all-new heights in the last few seasons and one of the reasons behind their resurgence has been an improved focus on the fitness of players. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) introduced a new 2km fitness test for the players this year in a bid to push the players further.

Most of the senior Indian players, participating in the Test series against England, were given an exemption considering their gruelling schedule. The test was conducted for the first time featuring some junior-level players including Sanju Samson, Rahul Tewatia, Nitish Rana, Siddarth Kaul, Ishan Kishan, etc. It has been reported that as many as six players, including wicket-keeper batsman Samson, have failed the test.

The BCCI, however, will give the players another opportunity to clear this test at it was their maiden attempt. In a case where the players fail to clear the test on the second attempt too, their selection could be jeopardised.

“Since this is a new type of a fitness test, they will all get a second chance to clear it at a fresh date, after some gap. However, if they fail to clear it, then it puts their selection for the forthcoming white-ball series comprising five T20Is and three ODIs against England at home in doubt,” a source told the Times of India.

When the Yo-Yo test was introduced for the first time, many cricketers including the likes of Mohammed Shami and Ambati Rayudu had failed it. This prompted them to work on their fitness and clear the test in subsequent attempts which then paved the way for them to be included in the national team.

Of the players who failed the test, Samson remains the biggest name. He was in the Indian team for the T20I series against Australia and is expected to be a part of the squad against England too.

Explaining the 2km test, the TOI source explained: “A few fitness tests were conducted for around 20-odd cricketers who are in reckoning for the limited-overs series against England at home, and for the T20 World Cup in India later this year. Among these tests was the now famous yo-yo test and the new ‘2km run’ fitness test. In this test, a batsman, wicketkeeper or a spinner has to complete the two-kilometer distance in eight minutes and 30 seconds, while for a fast bowler, the benchmark is eight minutes and 15 seconds. Six of the players failed to clear these tests. Some players barely managed to complete the run,” the source said.

The source also revealed that both the Indian team captain, Virat Kohli, and head coach, Ravi Shastri, are keen to make the 2 km test mandatory for all the players like the Yo-Yo test.

Amazing innings from Sanju (119) - almost won the game for RR in a mammoth run-chase

Not a very sharp guy but a good talent. He is only 26, so just entering peak years with bat.

One of the best IPL knocks, albeit in a losing cause.

Great start as captain.

Incredible that the kind of talent Samson possesses, he hardly gets to become a regular in the Indian side. In SA, Pakistan, SL, WI this guy would've played 30 Tests, 70 ODIs and 40 T20s by now. The depth India possesses, it's scary.

Samon would be a legend in Pakistan even ahead of Babar. The amount of natural talent this guy have is just pure insane.

He is like a Rohit Sharma in terms of range hitting and shots. Hence, his best position is as opener.

In T20s, if you give him a decent run as opener, he will be a brilliant batsman. But that spot is already taken by other guys. For India, if he plays at no 4 or 5, he is not suited for that role.

In T20s, Samson would have been a better batsman than Babar. In other formats, No chance!

Indeed it was a great knock, but ridiculous to turn down single of the penultimate ball. It was disrespectful to Morris and I am sure he could have hit for a boundary of the last ball.

His first class averages are substandard. Barely averages 30 in list A. Regardless of how much he bashes bowlers at the IPL, he should not be anywhere close to the international team.

Not really. I liked his decision of backing himself to clear the boundary of last ball. Look even if they had taken a single, a boundary was required to win the game.

They surely won't have any chance of running three to make it to super over. So, rather than asking Morris to hit a boundary, if Samson himself backs, that I would like more as a captain.

He is not a test material and probably not an ODI material too because of lack of consistency. He is inconsistent in T20s too but a brilliant batsman in that format. Never easy to bat all through while chasing 220 in 20 overs.
