[VIDEOS] Sanju Samson - Discussion Thread

Not in ODIs though. He was dropped for his T20 form. Another reason is, Rahul is from the same state as Rahul Dravid. He even sat Pant out when he was fit for KL Rahul. Then he made sure there were no other keepers competing with Rahul. That is another thing.
Rahul I hate. Trust me I'm not a fan. I didn't enjoy him as an opener and while I thought he was a clutch middle order bat I had a feeling his wc esc innings was around the corner lol.

I agree India is similar to Pakistan when it comes to selections. Although nowhere near as bad as Pakistan.

System isn't perfect by any means. I'm just saying, based of Kohli told sanju, he didnt really make a case for himself with t20 form and bcci was viewing odi as an extension of t20 at the time.

And Rahul made a case for himself after the bullying performance of Pakistan in the asia cup. Rahul didn't really combine anyone to drop him, He got removed from opening but at no 5, he didn't really do no wrong until the wc final.

Since Dravid became coach so many bizarre things happened

Kuldeep Yadav took 8 wickets & 40 runs against Bangladesh and won the Man of the match award. He was dropped next match
Isan Kishan scored 210 against Bangladesh. He was dropped several of the next few matches
Akash Deep bowled brilliantly in the test match against England beating the entire top order for pace. Dropped the next match once Bumrah returned. Siraj continued playing
Samson after making 77 in 42 in the Ireland dropped and Kishan was brought back
Bishnoi after taking 4 for 16 in Windies then they dropped him. He is the world no.4 ranked t20 bowler. Not even in the squad

It has happened before. but not that frequently. Karun Nair made 303 in 381 balls against England. 2 or 3 tests later permanently dropped.

Karun nair was a failure against aus and he was not able to play starc. He had issues against high pace.Dravid has his own pecking order irrespective of the pitch along with rohit's foolishness to irritate anyone

Exceptional batsman, India need to continue keeping him out of the team.
Problem is that when the competition is quite tough, Samson is highly inconsistent and won't give u that clutch performance to remember him.In jan, First time in SA odi tour,he scored a century and helped in winning the series .

The most famous and accomplished name in Indian cricket in this era to never make his mark in international cricket or never get an extended run.

He averages 56 in ODIs but can’t get into the side. He would have been a superstar in lesser talented teams like Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

It is sad to see that he is already 29. Unfortunately, time doesn’t stop for anyone.

The question is if he will forever remain the nearly man of Indian cricket like Badrinath, Jaffer etc. or is there a late career resurgence in him? Seems very unlikely considering the batting talent coming through the ranks.

Sri Lanka great tips Sanju Samson to thrive at T20 World Cup

A glowing endorsement for Sanju Samson to win the race to be first-choice wicket-keeper for India at next month's T20 World Cup.

Sri Lanka great Kumar Sangakkara believes Sanju Samson can thrive at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup if he wins the race to be India's first-choice wicket-keeper.

Samson has been in fine form for Rajasthan Royals at the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) under the watchful eye of Sangakkara, with the right-hander having scored an impressive 471 runs from 11 matches alongside seven dismissals in his role as keeper.

India chose two specialist keepers within their 15-player squad for next month's T20 World Cup and Samson faces a head-to-head battle with the returning Rishabh Pant to decide who will keep wickets at the 20-over showcase that will be held in the USA and West Indies.

Sangakkara was one of the premier wicket-keeper batters in the world in recent times and the Sri Lanka legend has seen enough at the IPL this year in his coaching role at Rajasthan to know Samson can make a strong impact at the T20 World Cup should he earn selection in India's XI.

"He's a special player and when he's fresh and focused there's nothing he can't do," Sangakkara said of Samson.

"He's a humble, grounded guy... not much on social media. He tends to like a lot of privacy, cares for the rest of the group.

"Those are great qualities to have apart from talent and skill. I think he'll be exceptional in that group going to the World Cup."

While Samson has been one of the premier keeper-batters in the IPL in recent years, the 29-year-old missed out on selection for India at the last T20 World Cup and has only played 25 T20I for his country since debuting against Zimbabwe in 2015.

But Sangakkara thinks Samson is a more mature player now than in previous years and a different approach from a mental perspective is helping him get the most out of his ability.

"With Sanju, the biggest thing about this season for him is having a lot of clarity about the way he should bat," Sangakkara added.

"There are certain stages of the game that he seems to lose a bit of concentration, which we've addressed from past seasons.

"He's changed his mindset about the importance of rest and recovery, rather than just training all the time and being tired mentally and physically. The rest is his exceptional ability."

Is Sanju trying to stat pad today because he is currently batting at 21 off 25 balls against Zimbabwe?

50*(39) for the right handed batter and this is his 2nd T20I fifty in 24 innings.

He has managed to drag India out from trouble here with this knock.

He deserves a place in Indian white ball team.

My best XI for T20s :-

Jaiswal( go bang bang)
Abhishek( go bang bang)
Gill( anchor)
SKY(high risk impact knocks)
Samson( match situation player)
Dube( spin basher)
Pandya( all rounder)
Axar( quickfire cameos)
Bumrah
Arshdeep
Kuldeep

Plenty of bowling options as well.

Don’t ever want to hear his name again.

Two ducks in a row.
Pathetic wicket keeping

Almost lost the match for us.

He’s just not meant to be an international cricketer. Bitter truth.

Samson finally unleashed that much awaited blood blitzkreig
Sanju Samson stunned fans with a remarkable 40-ball century, the second-fastest by an Indian in T20Is.

He repaid the faith shown by the team management with India's highest individual score against Bangladesh in 3rd T20I.

After failing to convert his starts into substantial knocks in the series' first two games, Samson stepped up in style in the series finale in Hyderabad.

His exceptional performance made him the first Indian batter to hit a T20I hundred against Bangladesh.

The Sanju Samson era has just begun.

All the years of disappointments , frustrations and failures.

It’s time to unleash the beast that is Sanju Samson on world cricket.

In an interview Sanju Samson said he was supposed to play the T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa but was excluded from the XI moments before the toss in Barbados:

"I had a chance to play the final. I was told to stay ready. I was ready. However, they decided before the toss that we would go with the same team. I was like, no worries. I was in that type of mood,"

"During the warm-up, Rohit took me to the side and started to explain to me why he is making that decision. He was like, You understood, na? You know his way, very casual? I told him, 'Let us win the match and then talk.' You focus on the match."

"He came back one minute later and said, 'I know you are cursing me in your mind.' I think you are not happy. I feel like you have something on your mind. Then we had a discussion. I told him, 'As a player, I want to play'."

Anil Kumble endorses ‘class act’ Sanju Samson in top order, he said:

“There's been a lot of talk about keeping Sanju Samson in the team long-term, and that century he scored will certainly have given him a lot of confidence. We know the ability of Sanju Samson; he is a class act,"

“Consistency is a bit lacking, and I'm sure the Indian selectors are mindful of that. Placing him at the top of the innings, either at number one, two, or three, is where I believe he can truly add value to this team. He has strong back foot play, plenty of time against fast bowlers, and can be devastating against spinners. It will be interesting to see how he handles those four matches in South Africa under those conditions,”

Sanju Samson has finally found his rightful position. He has shown the potential he has to open the innings and now he is showing that he deserves it. I don't think India should look for any other wicket-keeping batter other than Sanju Samson in white-ball cricket.

I think he has been wasted a lot. He was young talented kid and everyone pretty much said he has a bright future for Indian time. You flash your eyes and now he's 29.

He should've gotten the number of games close to what KL Rahul got.

Most sixes in an innings for India in T20Is

10 - Rohit Sharma vs Sri Lanka, Indore, 2017
10 - Sanju Samson vs South Africa, Durban, 2024
9 - Suryakumar Yadav vs Sri Lanka, Rajkot, 2023
8 - KL Rahul vs Sri Lanka, Indore, 2017
8 - Suryakumar Yadav vs South Africa, Johannesburg, 2023
8 - Rohit Sharma vs Afghanistan, Bengaluru, 2024
8 - Rohit Sharma vs Australia, Gros Islet 2024, t20 wc
8 - Abhishek Sharma vs Zimbabwe, Harare, 2024
8 - Sanju Samson vs Bangladesh, Hyderabad, 2024

Former South Africa Captain AB de Villiers on his YouTube channel:

"Sanju Samson, who scored a massive 100. Back-to-back T20 hundreds, absolutely incredible. Am incredibly proud of the guy, I say proud because I do have a personal connection with him. We have been in touch for a number of years now. I have always been a big fan of Sanju Samson, I just love the way he plays, and I always want him to do well."

"He scored a 100 once at the Chinnaswamy Stadium against RCB, I was on the park and I realised that day, that this guy is something special and he is proving me right. For those of you who have followed Sanju Samson, I haven't often seen him bat at a strike rate of more than 200, he is generally more conservative, he is usually between 140-160 and both these hundreds he has scored back-to-back have been very very fast and especially this last hundred."

Yet another duck for Sanju Samson in 3rd T20I against South Africa

This is the second duck in a row for Sanju after scoring back-to-back hundreds

Former cricketer Dinesh Karthik believes that Sanju Samson has done enough to seal his spot as an opener, he said:

“I think he [Samson] has cemented his spot as an opener. Yashasvi Jaiswal and him will be the openers at least for some time to come in the T20 format. He has made a lot of technical changes, especially suited to this format. He focused a lot on six-hitting. Against Keshav Maharaj, he stepped out but missed the length of the ball,”

“Maharaj did brilliantly to beat him in the air, but Sanju held his position and waited on the shot, hitting it over covers. That's a man who, even when he misses the length, doesn't panic and holds that extra second. That's a very tough skill to have, but he does it very well. That's what makes him very special,”

Not consistent that's why he has not feature regularly for team india

He needs to be more consistent otherwise once jaiswal will come his place might be in danger.

Jaiswal is more talented in my opinion.. he has variety of shots in his arsenal... sanju looks very single dimenssional player.

Sanju Samson's lost years: Did Dhoni, Kohli, Rohit and Dravid play a part?

Sanju Samson has always managed to stay relevant and remain in the headlines. A cricket superstar from Kerala is a rare commodity, and Samson has been a polarising figure over the years-whether it's because he's been selected to play for the Indian cricket team or, more often than not, overlooked. However, there's no denying that Samson is one of the most gifted talents to have emerged from the country in recent times.

After years of being in and out of the team, Sanju Samson now seems determined to cement his place in the T20I side. Under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav and coach Gautam Gambhir, Samson appears to have the security and confidence that were often lacking in the past.

Even as Samson became the first Indian cricketer to score back-to-back hundreds in T20I matches, with a stroke-filled 107 in Durban, his father, Vishwanath Samson, dropped a bombshell. He blamed four influential figures in Indian cricket-MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rahul Dravid, and Rohit Sharma-for not giving his son consistent opportunities during his twenties.

"There are 3-4 people who wasted 10 years of my son's vital career... captains like Dhoni ji, Virat [Kohli] ji, Rohit [Sharma] ji, and coach [Rahul] Dravid ji," Sanju Samson's father told a Kerala-based outlet.

He added: "The more they hurt him, the stronger Sanju came out of the crisis."

It was a bold allegation to make from Vishwanath Samson, especially at a time when his son was enjoying success at the highest level. There were even murmurs in the local media in Kerala that Samson was hoping the statements from his father don't blow up.

2 centuries, 2 ducks, and now a fifty - what a rollercoaster ride for Sanju Samson in his last 5 innings.

He slams half-century in 28 balls in 4T20I against South Africa

Aakash Chopra shared his views on the recent controversial statement made by Sanju Samson's father, he said:

"Sanju Samson's father has said something very interesting. He put Ji after Kohli, Dhoni, Rohit and Dravid's names and said that they spoiled 10 years of his son's career. I start thinking is it even necessary? I will be very honest,"

"Since I am a father, I can tell you that fathers are biased. Our children are the dearest to us and we don't see any of their shortcomings. The same must be true for my father. He might be saying that Aakash was wronged and he also should have got more opportunities,"

"We have seen this in Yograj Singh and Yuvraj Singh's case. Yograj Singh says something and then Yuvi is unable to figure out what he should say. He wants to disassociate himself, that he doesn't think like that. So the fathers' comments don't help. What will you gain from it? Whatever has passed has passed,"

Samju Samon is on a super beast mode this year

Sanju Samson's father, Samson Viswanath, has leveled serious allegations against the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) in an interview with a local media outlet:

"We have never done anything to provoke Kerala Cricket Association. We have not hurt anybody with our statements. But we have been facing trouble since the last 10 to 12 years. I don't know the reason. Sanju's big brother Saly Samson was great performer for Kerala too. He was picked for the one-day camp. But he did not get much chance."

"I knew about six months ago that they are planning something against Sanju. KCA were plotting things in a way that he leaves Kerala. We can't fight with them. There are directors there, we are small people. You can't talk back to them, you can't challenge them. My child is not safe here. They will put the blame on Sanju for everything and people will believe them too. So, I really want that my son stops playing cricket for Kerala. If any state wants to give my son a chance, saying 'Sanju, come and play for us', I am willing to make that appeal."

"Sanju is only an individual, whereas the KCA is a big, powerful association. I am afraid they'll come up with conspiracy theories against my son. I don't know why they are after us. We didn't do anything wrong to them or anyone else for that matter. Sanju, in his life, has never enjoyed anything else apart from cricket. Except for cricket ground and practice, he has focused on nothing else. He has devoted 30 years of his life to cricket, but he is being isolated now. I have had enough; want to get him out of this association (KCA)."

"I have talked to him (Sanju Samson). Suryakumar Yadav and Gautam Gambhir gave a chance to my son and I am very grateful to them. They gave a chance to my son by witnessing his potential. There is no need to be disappointed. I'm telling you right now, the team that has been chosen in the Champions Trophy is no less."

Sanju Samson's father, Samson Viswanath, drops a new bombshell in an interview with a local media outlet:

"I will tell you one incident about Rahul Dravid. When KCA had tried to disregard Sanju and destroy his career, Dravid ji had interfered in the matter. Wherever Sanju is at today, he owes it to Rahul Dravid. I have not forgotten anyone who has given us warmth and generosity. When action was being taken against Samson, they had given up his kit and everything else. Then, one day, we were all sad and sitting at home when Sanju got a call from Rahul sir. Sanju was overjoyed. He picked up the phone crying. The mood in the house was sombre."

"After keeping down the phone, he told me 'it was Rahul sir'. He said 'Sanju, I understand all that is happening with you. They are all jealous of you. Tu chinta mat kar (Don't worry). Don't get your morale down. I have taken care of it. You keep training and get ready for NCA'. He operated at a level higher than the KCA and took Sanju under his wings."

Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has come to Sanju Samson's defense amid criticism of his ability to handle pace, speaking to a local Indian sports media outlet:

"I just think that on occasions you get stuck and that's life. You've got to take risks at the top of the order. Same as Abhishek Sharma, same as all these batters. They're taking risks at the top of the order. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but more often than not, Samson comes up with the goods."

"I think mentally he's sound. I really like Sanju Samson as a batter. I actually love him. I was pretty surprised that he hasn't had more of a consistent role over the last few years. Yes, he's got a game here at the top of the order, but listen, these things happen. Things happen so quickly in the shortest form of the game."

"If he keeps doing it over the next six weeks or he does it over the next couple of months, then I'd probably have a look at it and start to question his technique. But I think that he's a fabulous player. I think he plays the short ball extremely well, and I just think he’s a rock solid player. So from that standpoint, there's no way that I'm going to stand here and critique his play of the short ball."

Sanju Samson turned out to be the most consistent batter of the series, but not in a good way. For the fifth game in a row, he was dismissed by a deep square cut.

His repeated use of the same shot has become a running joke, showing that he struggles against quality pace bowling. In the 5th T20I against England, he got out after scoring 16 off 7 balls.

Sanju Samson, despite getting out for an underwhelming 16 in the fifth T20I against England, didn’t go back to the pavilion before joining former T20I skipper Rohit Sharma and fellow Rajasthan Royals opener Yashasvi Jaiswal in an elite record list for India. With his first-ball six against Jofra Archer, Samson became only the third Indian to hit a maximum on the opening ball of a T20I match after Rohit and Jaiswal.

Sanju Samson Fractures Index Finger, Expected To Be Back For Training In 5-6 Weeks: Report

India wicketkeeper-batter, Sanju Samson has fractured his index finger after being struck by a bouncer off Jofra Archer during the fifth T20I between India and England that took place at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.

According to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI), the 30-year-old has made his way back home to Thiruvananthapuram and will be back in training after undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and would need clearance to get back to the national side.

An unnamed source within the Board of Control for Cricket in India has suggested that it would take five to six weeks before he can be back training in the nets. This would also mean that he would miss out on Kerala’s quarterfinal clash against Jammu and Kashmir set to begin on February 8. His return is likely to be for the upcoming Indian Premier League season, leading the Rajasthan Royals.
