[VIDEOS] Sanju Samson - Discussion Thread

Some people said that as long as Gilchrist(🤡) is there, Samson can't play and should look for something else. All I was saying was that he deserves proper chances. I am not his fanboy, but I always want players to get enough opportunities to prove themselves instead of being discarded by the fan armies of players who perform only occasionally.

Nice slap from Sanju to his arrogant haters. Hopefully this innings seals his spot as an opener in the side. :kp :inti

and talking as if they have produced GOATs after GOATs. Only GOAT they have produced are goats who consistently get slathered at the international level after decades worth of experience. Fans of a country and a cricket team that exists only due to Indian intervention and generosity is always sh**ing on their benefactor due to religion based hatredness.. with that kind low level thinking and decades of baggage they will go nowhere as a country or as a sporting nation
 
Even Secondary and Tertiary keeper bats of India are ripping other teams apart. Kishan against Pakistan and Sanju against WI.

Indian wk bats are booming, the fact that we don’t even need our best keeper bat(greatest in history and the greatest talent in worlf cricket) to win t20is is a testament to that.

Have to give credit to @Bhaag Viru Bhaag who has consistently supported Samson when most of us (myself included) didn’t rate him.

I still think Pant is a superior Test batsman, but it’s no longer that clear.

What an innings this fella played. At least in T20s he has to have sealed his spot for this tournament and the near future.

We also need to consider giving him a longer run in ODIs and Tests but whom does he replace is the question

While his temperament could be Kohliesque (too soon to say though), his shots are like Rohit Sharma’s - he lets the ball come to him.

Samson’s talent was never in question, I always found his issue to be mental toughness like KL - he had a tendency to get bogged down in big matches. Even in IPL, he has a reputation of starting big & getting mentally fatigued by the back end of the tournament. Today, he pleasantly surprised me by pulling off a calm, matured knock chasing under pressure. Didn’t know he had it in him.

Yeah, his strokes are very pleasing to eye like Rohit's in his heydays. Like Rohit, he too has a lot of time to play his strokes.
 
On a general note this guy has been playing FC since 2011, IPL since 2013 and T20i since 2016!

We tend to forget how young he started (FC at and how long he’s been around.

FC at 17 and IPL at 18.

In fact I believe he was selected for his state FC team at 14 (played 17).
 
He came in locked in.
Years of injustice, highs and lows of life humbled him as a person and he submitted himself to God.

What you saw yesterday was a man stoned by time and unfazed by the pressur eof the moment.
Subject kuch feel nahi kar sakta. Because subject has ice in his veins.
 
Sanju and Shreyas were given enough chances but they didn’t come good.. but guess experience helps.

Just coz Hayden and Hussey were given continuous run in later part of their life, Aussies didn’t cry injustice.
 
Samson, as much he is a good player, he is a very sensitive and emotional guy..He puts lot of baggage on him in the earlier matches trying to prove he is a worthy player and ended up playing unwanted shots..In yesterday's match, I think he was in a very right frame of mind and hence played a blaster of an innings..Hope Sanju doesn't stop and play with the same frame of mind in the upcoming matches whatever may be the pressure..

He has been a consistent domestic performer for what feels like years now, but at the same time people shouldn't forget that there was a long stretch recently where he didn't perform. In a team like India where there is so much competition for spots you can't really blame them for wanting to prefer Kishan and Abhishek over him, where they are batting more consistently. He also seems like an 'aar ya paar' type of player in T20, where he will either score big or not score at all.

But still credit to them for not dropping him from the squad entirely, and credit to him for making the most of his opportunity and delivering on such a big occassion when the team needed it most. I think Gautam Gambhir is one of his biggest proponents and has been for quite some time, which definitely helps.

Right after the 2024 World Cup, after retirement, they created a template of going harder from the word go. ABhishek, Sanju Samson, and Tilak were key ingredients of this template. IN a template like this, you often boom or bust. That is what happened to Samson. Abhishek, Samson, and Tilak played unselfish cricket. Abhishek, even with that approach, managed to attain consistency. But Samson couldn't achieve the same. But they backed him. The real problem started when BCCI tried to make a poster boy out of Gill. HE was randomly brought into the setup, and everyone batted out of position. The whole balance got screwed up. Sanju lost form. Gambhir and BCCI are the root cause. After all the crap experiments, they are back to where they were, except Kishan joined the setup.
 
Gautam played a bluff by brining sanju in and that worked for him and his side... Sanju is looking in good form atm... Not seeing him getting dropped now.
 
Ravi Shastri pinpoints key to recent success of Sanju Samson

Former India coach Ravi Shastri has revealed what he thinks is the main reason behind the recent success of Sanju Samson at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Samson has been on the fringes of India's best T20I outfit in recent years and missed selection during the early portion of the T20 World Cup when Ishan Kishan was preferred as opener and Rinku Singh was in favour.

But Samson has contributed consecutive Player of the Match performances to help guide India into the final of the T20 World Cup against New Zealand, with his most recent innings coming in the knockout semi-final with England in Mumbai when he struck seven sixes in a superb knock of 89.

While Samson's upturn in form has surprised many, Shastri has not been taken aback with the recent output of the hard-hitting right-hander as the former India coach has noticed a clear shift with his approach.

Shastri believes Samson is more mentally tough when batting and his recent results at the T20 World Cup have been due to this shift.

"I think finally realising and coming to terms with the fact that he needs to be more consistent," Shastri said on The ICC Review.

"He's got to be wiser with his shot selection and he's got to back his strengths.

"The thing with Sanju is he's got every shot in the book, but lapses in concentration.

"I think he's toughened up mentally and there's never anyone who's doubted his skill or talent ever since he made the side.

"What people have been disappointed is that the run of consistency that should have been there by now isn't there, but he's come of age now."

And while Samson has shown glimpses of his prowess in the past, Shastri believes his best form is still ahead given his role in the India team is now clearly defined.

"He's still just 31 years of age and a genuine match-winner," Shastri noted.

"And when you see shots like (today) that is being played, there's class, there's touch there, there's power there, there's brute force. It's just unbelievable."

While the form of Samson has been a pleasant surprise for India, the recent efforts of fellow opener Abhishek Sharma are of some concern heading into Sunday's final of the T20 World Cup against New Zealand.

Abhishek has managed to score just 89 runs from seven innings at the T20 World Cup to date, but Shastri believes it's too late to make a change to India's XI and the No.1 ranked T20I batter must be persisted with in the tournament decider against the Black Caps.

"I think they've just got to stick with him now," Shastri noted.

"Don't make any changes as the side's having a good run. Stick with that and just tell him believe in your ability, believe in your strengths and back your strengths, don't go into a shell where you're tentative or you're timid.

"We back you, you back your strengths and go out there and play. The last game might be the best game for you'."

When I was in the 2024 World Cup team where I didn't play, I kept visualising, kept on working and this was exactly what I wanted to do. After the NZ series I was broken, my dreams were completely shattered. And I was thinking what can I do. But God had different plans. And I was rewarded for being brave enough to dream. A lot of former players have reached out to me and tried to help me out. For the last couple of months, I have been in constant contact with Sachin sir. I reached out to him and had big big conversations with him. Getting a guidance from someone like him, what more can you ask for? I am very grateful for everyone who supported me. [What more does he want to achieve?] This itself is very big for me, I want to enjoy it right now and then after a few day will figure out what more to do."
