"Messi will be joined by his Miami teammates, Luis Suarez and Rodrigo de Paul, as he unveils a 70-foot statue in Kolkata on Saturday. In just 27 days, a 45-person crew built what feels like a national monument to an international icon rather than a tribute to a footballer."

“He (Lionel Messi) would be surprised to see the arrangements made for him,” said fan Shiladitya Banerjee. “He would be shocked to see how he is worshipped in Kolkata and across India. I am tearing up but these are happy tears.”

I can understand a statue of Messi in Argentina or Barcelona but in India?

The statue itself looks a bit strange, not sure it will last too long.

I didnt realise he's so popular as India is non-existent in football.

Although Im looking forward to the reveal of the face.

Pele, Maradona, Messi - all played in Kolkata. It is a football mad city. The club rivalry between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan is rivarly.

The burn on this thread is neauseating to see.

:rp :kp

For the knight riders ?
:kp

When did they play in Calcutta?

Pele played in 1977 with his New York Cosmos team against Mohun Bagan at Eden Gardens.

Maradona played twice in charity matches, once in 2008 and other in 2017

Messi played international match with Venezuela in Kolkata

:kp

Apt title. Will the statue be offered milk? It may flow out from inappropriate places then.

That's pretty cool he is visiting. Hope he inspires Indian kids.

We make fun of Indian reaction but it would be a big deal if these players visited Pakistan too.

Let them enjoy it.

So they have never played a proper competitive football match in India. Thanks

Why a statue of Messi?

Visiting is inspiring but Pakistan wouldnt build a statue of him lol.

Statue is normal part of their culture so it may not have the same connotations as it does for us where it is a sign of tremendous respect only ( in th UK) and frowned upon ( in Pakistan)

It's a mystifying world.

I've seen grown men shed tears listening to religious preachers and spend their life savings on a single pilgrimage to Kashi or Mecca or the Vatican. I've seen middle-aged women swooning at a glimpse of Taylor Swift.

I personally don't understand all this fanboy/girl-ism but I would think a statue is pretty par for the course given the levels of this stuff nowadays. Hopefully it's just plaster of paris and will be dissolved once he's gone.

Lets not expose your jealousy and hatred so blatantly bro. This is open forum, remember?

:rabada2

Ive seen Messi play live in a proper football match. Im not a Messi , Barca or Argentina fan, so why would I be jealous? lol

The point of this thread is Messi has NO links to India but you lot have built a statue for him . Hilarious.

Explain this culture for pls? Btw its not a great looking statue is it ? lol

Hahaha. Read post #7 of yours when you questioned when did they play in Calcutta? Also made a sarcastic snide remark whether they played for Knight Riders.

Now when I informed you and listed the time and date when they played in Calcutta, you change the topic to 'Never played proper competitive match'.

If this is not jealousy and desperation, what is? LMAO

😂😂

Played a proper match, not some exhibition. Do you know the difference?

Do you know the offside rule in football before bowing down to Messi? :ROFLMAO:

Why would they play proper match in India? I presume by proper match you meant non friendly internationals and premier leagues. Why would they play them in India, a country which dont have a proper football team?

However, all the 3 - Pele, Maradona, Messi played exhibition/friendly matches in India is a big deal.

Lets be honest, you didnt knew it and hence asked that silly question on post #7. You thought they never played in 3rd world country like India etc etc.

Now when mirror being shown and you have no where to hide, you are changing the topic.

Perks of debating with Rajdeep I guess.

Well done, you've figured out what a football match is lol.

Exactly they have never played in india so makes no sense to do this...

"He (Lionel Messi) would be surprised to see the arrangements made for him,” said fan Shiladitya Banerjee. “He would be shocked to see how he is worshipped in Kolkata and across India. I am tearing up but these are happy tears.”""

99.9999% of Indians have never seen him live playing exhibition or even walking down the street.

So why are they worshipping him?

What do you say when you pray to Messi?

Exactly they have never played in india so makes no sense to do this...
Incase you don't know English, let me repeat - They have all played in India, as stated previously.

Pele played in 1977, Maradona in 2008 & 2017 and Messi played International friendly with Venezuela in 2010 (in his prime).

They never played Premier League or Champions league games because Indian clubs does not participate in it and these matches only played in Home/Away of the participating team. Same is the reason for International match. Do you expect Brazil vs Argentina Copa America match to be played in Calcutta?

"He (Lionel Messi) would be surprised to see the arrangements made for him,” said fan Shiladitya Banerjee. “He would be shocked to see how he is worshipped in Kolkata and across India. I am tearing up but these are happy tears.”""
So what? He is a fan who is expressing his joy.

99.9999% of Indians have never seen him live playing exhibition or even walking down the street.
This has to be the most absurd logic. So just because they have not seen him live, they cant be fans?

So why are they worshipping him?

What do you say when you pray to Messi?
Building a statue is cultural thing in India. It is more cultural than religious.

Dont worry, I dont pray to Messi. I dont have to justify you whom I pray to. If I start picking on your religion, you know you will have to run for cover. So lets stay respectful.

I wonder how moderators allow such blatant racism here.

I find this an incredibly weird statement. Most people have never physically seen the sporting/film star or musician they're a fan of.

I personally am a huge fan of R D Burman's music. I've never seen him perform or met him and nor am I likely to (since he's dead).

My daughter's crazy about Hermione Granger and she isn't likely to meet her either. She's a fictional character.

I'm guessing all Christians haven't seen Jesus Christ. They seem huge fans though.

I don't know where you're getting this limitation from that you have to physically see someone to be allowed to be crazy about them.

Its pretty simple English.

"He would be shocked to see how he is worshipped in Kolkata and across India. I am tearing up but these are happy tears.”"

Pray to who you want pal. Im just asking the logic, theology or reasoning to pray to footballer? If you cant answer, Im sure someone else can.

Questions are asked about all religions, inc Islam. Nobody is picking on you lol

Now you are backtracking and trimmed that part of 'they never played in Calcutta'. So hopefully you are clear now that they indeed played in Caluctta and not for night riders.

Okay lets move on to the fan part.

Fans are fans. Just like you are a Mo Salah fan, I am sure that guy is Messi fan. So expressing his joy for able to see his idol is not a bad thing. There is no logic, theology (lol) or reasoning behind being a fan. What is the theology behind your like for Salah?

Hes never played, kicking a ball in some theatre exhibition is not playing football.

Sure lets move on.

Worshipping is not the same as expressing joy. Salah is a star player for a team I watch, supported and have been a fan of since I was 5, yet I DO NOT worship him or have a statue of him in my house .

Again, why worship him, hes not Indian or Hindu or a Deity? When they pray to him what do they ask for...an autograph?

Many football fans sort of do worship their players.

Wasn't Robbie Fowler called god, Maradonna the hand of god with his hand ball, there are probably others.

I find it weird too, and Indians take it to extremes, but let's be honest, it's not uncommon for sportsfans to have weird obsessions.

Kids have idols of the players in their homes via posters and toys, adults plaster their names onto their shirts and sing chants of encouragement, their happiness and prosperity is linked to results of their team.

You can find a quasi-religiousness to much of football culture.

We find stuff that we are more familiar with to be less weird.

Calling a player God is just a figure of speech. Making a statue of one, bowing down and praying is very different. This is a very lame argument. These people actually pray to him. Can you explain why they do and what they say, as you seem to know and are defensive of them? lol.

Why is it different? What do you think some of our more literalist scholars would have to say about naming player god, and having idols ( posters) of players in homes?

I am not defensive. Just think it is down to cultural issues, and we should be respectful of their culture and any weird stuff they do, especially since it has no impact on our lives. Live and let live brother, that is just how they support players.

My least favourite part about pp is all these anti india/ anti Hindu threads that are allowed to go on here. Can’t understand how poking fun of religions is fair game.

I think anti-India is fair game. Indians bait Pakistanis like crazy on here and you have to have a bit of thick skin about your country - especially when both India and Pakistan have such glaring issues.

Religion though is a bit below the belt. Taunts about how cows are especially tasty or monkey and elephant headed gods especially when Hindus can't taunt back should really be verboten. It's not like any religion has any logic about why they worship or believe the things they do so it's very difficult to respond.

It's not a huge deal though. We've all been minorities somewhere and unlike where you live, nobody's forcing anybody to stay on the site - especially Hindus and Indians. You can always quit if you find things too offensive. Or if you're good enough, respond and taunt back without crossing the line.

I just feel bad for Hindus in Pakistan. Imagine so much hatred in online forum, then what they face in real life. The irony in all of this is, KKWC lives in England which is multicultural and first world. Even then so much hatred.

It is good to be an Indian.

Anti Hindu I do agree with you.

One is a figure of speech, the other is literal worship.

Sure, when RSS fans live and let live , others will too. Its a fair thread and fair question as to why people are worshipping a man who has no links to them or their land.

I didnt realise he's so popular as India is non-existent in football.

Gen Z follows soccer. The older generation, not so much.

Soccer has become popular in India in the last decades. But still way behind cricket.

Football will never come close to cricket in India , not even in a 100 years. However FIFA idiotically imo are upping the number teams in the World Cup. India has a huge population but should look to Indians who play football, growing up in Europe. There arent many, even less than Pakistanis but it may help them qualify when the world cup is 40+ teams.

Its better to grow your own stars and give them credit not someone who cares not for India.

Bangladeshi hindus, Sri Lankan hindus, Nepalese hindus, Pakistani Hindus etc. do not behave like this. It seems like this type of thing only happens in India.

Then again, hindus from other countries are 4-5 times more intelligent than the low-IQ sanghis from India. :inti

Why worship?
:murali

Messi is a human. Do they not use their brains? You can't worship a human being. That's just retarded. :inti
You basically called Hinduism/Christianity retarded. Spoken like a true bigot....

In Hinduism, we have a concept of Avatar(reincarnation) and equating people to God(Mother, Father, Teachers, Doctors etc).
Extending divine status to accomplished people is ok in Indian culture. Its the respect and veneration for Icons in their respective fields. Its too much for your wee little brain to process this. You stick to your hatred... :mv

India does not have a Soccer Star that is renowned by the world. Until India gets its own, they can borrow Superstars from other countries to promote the game in India. Many Indians support Argentina in World Soccer.

Out of interest why do they support Argentina?

What happened to the so called Indian super league of soccer which was being seen as next Premier League a few years ago by Indians?

Don't know why Indians support Argentina. I never understood that.

May be because both wear blue. I remember Maradona being a darling in India in 90's.

Diego Maradona is the greatest footballer in history, no man is close to his brilliance with a football.

It seems world famous, succesful people are seen as great people in India even if they have no clue where India is on the globe. A nation of nearly 2 billion should really have so many of their own heros

India is a poor country with too many people. Only in the last 2 decades, it has started to rise up. From 1947- 2000, India was pretty much garbage.
People say, with 1.4 billion people, they should be leading in all sports. Fact is, over population makes everything almost impossible.

The saddest bit is that folks engaging in this hate mongering, or at least some of them, think they are doing this in the right cause.

To those posters, allow me to burst your bubble, there is no nobility in disrespecting another person’s religion.

Please name the religion which worships Messi?

The cult support fame, because fame means numbers, and numbers means attention - which the cult crave for!

The cult are also in desperate need of role models. Modi has failed, BiBI has failed, and their past idols have failed, so now its on to next-gen idols - thus we have Messi.

Tomorrow it could be Luke Littler.

I hope they dont find out who Luke Littler is, we dont want to see a dodgy statue of him. I doubt Indians know much about darts.

Spot on, currently @Rajdeep is in discussions with local politicians in India to erect a Tommy Robinson statue .

I wish Pakistan would also invite some international soccer players to play exhibition games in Lahore or Karachi. This would trigger more interest in soccer and given the average stature difference between Pakistanis and Indians, Pakistan would smoke India in soccer with proper training, interest, and motivation.

Indian football fans and Canadian cricket fans

Two of the most cringe sporting fanbases in the world!

No offense to Messi he is goat football player

But what's the reason for this statue ? I mean 70 Ft tall statue

Messi cares about India ? No
Messi even know the place before where his statue is placed now ? No
Messi played for any football club in India ? No
Messi did any charity works in India ? No

Then what's the purpose of this statue he won World Cup for his country Argentina not India, Just to please him these clowns spent money for his 70ft tall statue rather they should have used that money for football development in India, many players in kolkata still plays the game with barefoot you can distribute shoes to them but No sir we will invest in this Useless statue.

We have our own goat in cricket "Sachin Tendulkar" even statue for him would have made sense as he contributed lot to Indian cricket or maybe Dhoni who won World Cup for us but we are obsessed with white supremacy

This country is stupid and full of weirdos

This is not worship?? Right?

Not sure why people have to be salty about it. Let the football fans have some fun. Messi would go down as among the greatest athletes of all time so it’s a dream for many people to merely witness him once in their lifetime. Pakistanis making a story out of anything

Build a statue for Sunil Chhetri, not for celebrities who’ve never played for India.
Recognise your own heroes first. 🇮🇳

:kp

It was a scam apparently. They charged people a lot of money for the tickets but in return gave a 5 minute appearance that too being surrounded by dozens of people.

He was there on turf for 22 minutes and West Bengal sports minister Arup Biswas was seen hijacking the event as he always does.

They all deserve this humiliation. I'm enjoying it. :klopp :kp

30 years later, kolkatta people still throwing chairs and bottles on the ground. Wonder why the people of that area act as jungli. @cricketjoshila u r from that area aswell

Turns out indians started vandalism.... lol

Yet another experience of taking citizens for granted.

Hyped expensive event. It was suppose to be a 2 hour event. Concluded in merely 20 min with Mr. MESSI surrounded by over 100 people's, not allowing 50,000 paid visitors to see him. Left in no time.

Kolkata organisers is pathetic yet again.

:klopp :kp

She is not chief minister but cheap minister of Bengal. Mismanaging any event is in her DNA. Remember the singer KK? He also died due to TMCs inability to manage an event properly.

Turns out indians started vandalism.... lol

You are mixing things. Read this thread from top to bottom. There are blatant anti hindu posts and mocking their faiths. So brother @Obaidd is absolitely right in calling it out.

This issue of vandalism is different and we should all condemn it together.
