Sourav Ganguly files Rs 50 crore defamation suit over Messi's Kolkata event claims

Sourav Ganguly has taken legal action against Uttam Saha, president of the Argentina Fan Club of Kolkata, for allegedly making false and damaging statements about his involvement in the controversial Lionel Messi event at Yuva Bharati Stadium.

Former India cricket team captain, Sourav Ganguly, has initiated legal proceedings against Uttam Saha, president of the Argentina Fan Club of Kolkata, filing a defamation suit seeking Rs 50 crore in damages. The action comes in response to Saha's public allegations linking Ganguly to the controversial Yuva Bharati Stadium incident during Lionel Messi's visit to Kolkata on Saturday, December 13.

Ganguly's complaint, filed at Lalbazar, said that Saha's statements have caused significant harm to his reputation and were made without any factual basis. The former India captain described Saha’s remarks as "false, malicious, offensive, and defamatory remarks" and accused him of acting knowingly to damage his reputation.
Ganguly, who currently serves as Cricket Association of Bengal president, clarified that he attended the stadium event only as a guest and denied any official connection with the Messi program.
The defamation suit marks a high-profile legal confrontation following the fallout from Messi’s highly anticipated but disorderly appearance in Kolkata.

"Serious allegations are being made publicly without any factual basis," Ganguly said in his complaint.

The dispute centres on Saha's claims that Ganguly played a role as a middleman in Satadru Dutta's management of the event. Ganguly’s legal team has sent a notice to Saha, reinforcing the demand for retraction and damages.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee apologised on X, expressing regret over the mismanagement and to both Messi and Kolkata’s football fans who were unable to get a proper glimpse of the Argentine superstar.

During the Messi event at Yuva Bharati Stadium, Ganguly was present but remained in a different section of the venue. As disorder broke out in the stands, Ganguly was seen leaving the stadium with disappointment written all over his face.

The Messi event itself was marred by poor organization and crowd control, which led to widespread disappointment. Fans, many of whom had paid substantial sums for tickets, expected an unforgettable experience but instead witnessed chaos. The episode quickly drew criticism and international attention, highlighting issues in event planning and crowd management at high-profile sporting gatherings in India.

The incident also reignited discussions about VIP culture and access during major sports events in the country. Videos and reports described Messi’s restricted interaction with fans, while officials and invited guests dominated the pitch area, drawing frustration among supporters.

This is just typical india, what do the fellow indians think:

New Delhi: Lionel Messi, Argentina's FIFA World Cup-winning icon who recently concluded his 'GOAT' India tour a few days ago during which he visited leading metropolitans, attended events, giving a chance to crores of followers to catch his glimpse and get inspired.

How Much

The World Cup-winning football icon Lionel Messi, according to now arrested Satadru Dutta, who organised the Kolkata event on December 13 that ended on a horrible note, told investigators that Messi was paid a whopping Rs 89 crore, PTI reported.

Out of this some, Rs 11 crore was paid as tax to the Indian government, he said.

"Lionel Messi was paid Rs 89 crore for the tour, while Rs 11 crore was paid as tax to the Indian government," Dutta told investigators, placing the total expenditure at Rs 100 crore. Of this amount, 30 per cent was sourced from sponsors, while another 30 per cent was generated through ticket sales, sources said.

Why Satardu Dutta Has Been Arrested?

Satadru Dutta, the main organiser of Lionel Messi event in Kolkata on December 13, has been arrested and being investigated after the Bengal event ended in chaos when the football icon was surrounded by a whole lot of people.
Messi's fans who had purchased costly tickets to catch a glimpse of the football star complained that they were not able to see him as high profile VVIPs had surrounded him and finally ended up unruly at Kolkata’s Salt Lake stadium.
The turn of events led Messi to leave the venue before the scheduled time.

'Messi Was Unhappy Being Touched or Hugged'

The event organiser Dutta has told investigators that the football icon was "unhappy with being touched or hugged" during his appearance at the Salt Lake Stadium and left before staying there full-time as scheduled, a source in the SIT said.
During prolonged questioning by officers of the Special Investigation Team (SIT), Dutta said Messi "did not like being touched on the back or being hugged" and that the concern had been conveyed in advance by the foreign security officials responsible for the footballer's protection, he said.

"Despite repeated public announcements to restrain the crowd, there was no impact. The manner in which Messi was surrounded and embraced was completely unacceptable to the World Cup-winning footballer," Dutta told investigators during his grilling on Friday, the source said.

Why West Bengal Sports Minister Is Under Scanner Over Messi’s Kolkata Event

West Bengal Sports Minister Aroop Biswas was seen in close proximity to Messi throughout the programme, with visuals showing him holding the footballer around the waist while posing for photographs.
Biswas has been accused of using his influence to allow relatives and personal acquaintances access to Messi. Amid mounting criticism, he resigned from his post as sports minister pending completion of the investigation.
Investigators are also probing how such a large number of people gained access to the ground area.

Dutta also claimed that initially only 150 ground passes were issued, which, however, was tripled when a "very influential person" reached the stadium and "overpowered him". Police are examining whether the expanded access directly contributed to the breakdown of crowd control.
"The arrested accused also claimed that once that particular influential person reached the stadium, all the flow-chart for the Messi programme got disturbed and he could not control it," the official told PTI.
The West Bengal government had set up the Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising senior IPS officers Piyush Pandey, Javed Shamim, Supratim Sarkar and Muralidhar to investigate the vandalism at Argentine football star Lionel Messi’s event at the Salt Lake stadium. The SIT is also investigating security lapses, access violations, and the role of organisers and officials in the incident, the officer added.

Yet the whole 3 events were complete failures, reasong why he didnt stay outside in the stadium for longer - was because of the terrible air quality, he was choking up

Messi's Kolkata Event Went Out Of Control After 'One Influential Man's Arrival'—Who Is Under Scanner In SIT Probe?

Satadru Dutta, the main organiser of Lionel Messi's event in Kolkata, has indicated that the arrival of an influential individual disrupted the program.

Satadru Dutta, the arrested main organsier of Lionel Messi's event in Kolkata, has told investigators that the entrance of "one particular influential person" in the stadium derailed the entire program, which eventually resulted in chaos. During prolonged questioning by officers of the Special Investigation Team (SIT), Dutta revealed that the football icon was "unhappy with being touched or hugged" during his appearance at the Salt Lake Stadium and left before staying there full-time as scheduled.
Messi "did not like being touched on the back or being hugged" and that concern had been conveyed in advance by the foreign security officials responsible for the footballer's protection, he said, sources told PTI.

Kolkata leg was a failure.

In Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Vantara things were all good and Messi had a great time and also became an honourary Sanatani, an honour bigger than even winning the FIFA World Cup.

Possibly one of the cringiest trips Messi has ever done. :qdkcheeky

Messi came to Bangladesh too in 2011 (Argentina played Nigeria in a friendly match in Dhaka) -->

Tell me why are you always wrong about everything?

Posting is not necessarily a response. You're just trying to show face that you're here and not running away. The truth as we both know though is you have nothing to respond with that will provide value. Please stick to your rants about Mohali and Misbah as that's just your level

Reaching out for back up after getting owned eh

Running away is your speciality and I'll give you a prime example of that in recent times.
