Virat Kohli - Countdown to 100 100s

Virat doesnt play 'first class' now just because its simply not of his level.

The whole premise of this thread is dubious.

Virat Kohli will be 30 years old in less than a fortnight, and he has only scored 31 First Class centuries in his life.

He is less than a third of the way to the real landmark. He will have to play til he’s 50 years old to get his hundred hundreds.

Sachin Tendulkar’s so-called hundredth hundred showed what a bogus landmark 100 international centuries is.

An ODI century against Bangladesh on a flat, grassless wicket with no slip fielders and a “wide law” which tells the batsman the bowler’s line is probably worth around a quarter of the value of a First Class century against New South Wales or on a lively track in domestic Pakistan cricket.

If Virat Kohli aspires to recognition for a hundred hundreds he needs to start playing an awful lot more First Class cricket instead of 20 and 50 overs rubbish.

Recognition from whom? One poster on pakpassion.net. I'm sure he's awfully worried about that!

Kohli wishes he was half as good as EH Hendren, CP Mead, TW Graveney. I agree with you.

He is dominating the game and without doubt, the best player ever in ODI

There was Sachin but many had similar averages as him. Whereas Kohli is in his own league and absolutely dominating the scene. People say batting is earlier in today time yet there is no single player matching him.

Also he is a run machine + finisher. This is a deadly combo.

This is why I joined the forum. This mind blowing knowledge about "TRUE CRICKET" is something you wouldn't get anywhere else.

Because of this gem of a post and subsequent googling I came to know that Ravindra Jadeja is one of the finest batsmen India has produced with his 3 triple centuries. Well ahead of the so the called greats like Gavaskar, Tendulkar etc. Virat Kohli doesn't even belong to the same postal code as the batting giant that is Jadeja.

:salute I salute you sir. The true connoisseur of the game called cricket.

We have our batting first class geniuses. Ajay Sharma averages 66 .Barry Richards who ??

Tbh I’ve just spent the last half an hour thinking about this and have come to the realisation that despite having scored dozens of centuries against the best bowlers in the world, Kohli would really struggle to get the red ball off the square against a team of 19-year-old students who only play one or two first class matches a year.

Maybe Junaids was right after all… :virat

English counties play 0 or 1 match against university opposition.

At the 2015 World Cup alone, India played against Ireland, Zimbabwe and the UAE.

I repeat, consider Tendulkar’s “Hundredth Hundred”.

A match-losing joke innings against joke bowlers on a joke pitch with a joke ball and joke field settings.

And yet somehow that’s a milestone?

Take a break grandpa, test cricket itself is irrelevant outside Eng and Aus, let alone first class. Nobody has time for tuk tuk nonsense anymore. This is 2018, not 1978. Get on with the time

These milestone are meaningless. He should focus on winning his team test series in South Africa, England and Australia so that his fans could aim to humiliate these countries in their backyard.

How long will it take for King Kohli to get 100 100's in international cricket?

How long will it take for him to get a hundred of hundreds in international cricket? I think he can reach it there even in next 3 years because India have got 5 matches series after every year against England and Australia which means he will have chance to score bucketloads of runs against them and then there are series against teams like SL, WI, NZ too in which he can get centures. Of course it also depends on the fitness, If he manages to keep himself fit for next 5 years.

Oh I missed the gem from Junaids

Hahaha epic.. He is absolutely right hundred 100s don't mean zilch if they are not scored against club level English or Aussie bowlers who no one knows about..

Considering he is having a pretty ordinary Australia tour this time... just 2 centuries in test+ ODI.

Keeping his mind his extraordinary high standards, he had a poor Test series. An average of 40 with 1 century and 1 50.

He will reach his 100th international ton by the 2023 WC. I can envisage him doing it in the final. Would make the perfect script.

64 centuries now, wow. Time for him to step up in this years World Cup and not crumble under pressure.

Yup like Waqar and Akhtar, Waqar esp coz Jadeja smacked his famous yorkers, luckily for Virat at least he has a WC to his name.

Virat Kohli is the talking point in most cricketing circles. And there's no denying that he's getting better with each passing day. And former Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin has somewhat increased his expectations from Virat Kohli, who scored his 39th ODI century during the 2nd ODI in Adelaide, which India won by six wickets. Speaking to Aaj Tak, Mohammad Azharuddin said, "Virat Kohli's consistency level has been achieved by very few people. And I believe if he's fit, and if there's no injury, he can reach 100 hundreds. His consistency level is better than most players around the world."

And not just Kohli, MS Dhoni also seemed to be in the pink of form, where he smashed the winning run in typical Dhoni fashion to take India home. Kohli, after the match, praised MS Dhoni's effort, and said, "There is no doubt that he should be a part of this team. Tonight was MS classic. He calculates the game so well. He takes the game till the end, when only he knows what's going on in his mind, and he backs himself to hit those big shots at the end."

By winning the 2nd ODI in Adelaide, India levelled the series 1-1, with the third and final ODI in Melbourne ready to decide the series. India had lost the first ODI by 34 runs, where Rohit Sharma had scored a century in a losing cause.

I think he'll fall just short - he won't play until he's 40 years old like Tendulkar did. Kohli will most likely call it quits after the world cup in India when he'll be ~35. So to get to 100 he'll need 7-8 x 100s each and every year until his retirement. Sure that's been achievable in his late 20s but can he do it in his mid 30s?

Heh. I could have authored this post in 2011 predicting how Dhoni wouldn't hang around. Never again.

Unless Kohli suffers an absolutely shocking decline in form or God forbid suffer a serious injury, nothing to happen.

With advancements in sports science and Kohli s own insane fitness regime, I'd not be surprised if he plays well beyond 40.

My call is that he will have something like 60 ODI centuries by, let's say, end of January 2022 - three years from today. He has scored something like 9 centuries in his last 20 ODIs. His metronomic efficiency in ODI, the physical fitness and the extraordinary mental strength should hold him in good stead even if there is some loss of form.

But whether he will have the time to overhaul SRT's 51 test centuries is a very difficult call. Maybe not.

Overall, he should cross 100 centuries in the next 6 years or so.

Agreed if has has the hunger and drive he can definitely play beyond 40.

Kohli turning 40 is a decade away and Indian fans can hope BCCI would turn ruthless and professional enough in that time to not allow superstar syndrome holding Indian cricket hostage.

Whether Kohli plays beyond 40 shouldn't be his decision to make, as it is currently the case with Dhoni.

No I'm not saying he should hog a place in the side just because of his stature as a player, I actually think Kohli has the calibre to deliver in his late 30s and retire by 41-42 as long as he continues to enjoy playing the game.

Dhoni should have retired by now and Tendulkar played 20-30 tests more that he should have but he chose to pursue further milestones such as 100th international ton and 200 test caps at a cost of 3-4 runs in his test batting average.

To emphasise again, no player should have a given right to stay in the side because of their status as a cricketer and past heroics.

He will overtake Tendulkar's centuries tally but will definitely retire before 40.

He will be the first to hit 50 ODI 100s. Tendulkar didn’t get it, many times got out late 90s.

Before 40? Nah! He's not Dhoni! Kohli would probably retire after 2023 WC! Not because his passion would die by 2023, but he sure knows when to call it quits! We would get to witness Kohli the Legend for the next 3 or 4 years mostly!

He is going to retire after the 2027 World Cup. 8 years is more than enough for him to score another 50 hundreds. In the last year or so, has alluded multiple times that he still has 7-8 years left.

Honestly, my only worry is quality, not quantity. His decline and temporary loss of form will have a definite impact in the future. However, I recon 2019 will be his WC.

Time will tell...

He should maintain his dominance till 33-34 at least, but he is inevitably going to have dip at the end of his career like every player.

2023 World Cup will be in India and he will be 34. Something very bizarre and unexpected needs to happen for him to miss that tournament.

Apologies, I'm referring to his "defining" WC. I have a feeling many posters, including me, will be proven wrong about Kohli in the coming WC.

He has high standards. I personally think he won't stick around like Sachin and Dhoni when his performances fail. Being an alpha male, he will never play just as a batsman after losing captaincy like Dhoni did.

Dhoni resigned from captaincy when he was still a very good batsman, only because he felt it was better for the team if Kohli takes over the reigns.

Do you think Kohli will resign as a captain while he's still a.good batsman? There in lies the answer.

Ah. Dhoni resigned captaincy in 2017. He was very bad from 2015 onwards. His fans might show averages, but we all know the story.

A hyperbole. I've my doubts over him playing WC '23, forget about WC '27.

200 test caps milestone, lol....

The intensity with which Kohli approaches his game, I won't be surprised he is plagued by a career threatening injury or decides to call it quits himself.

Kohli plays every single game with 100% intensity, he will burm out by 2023 and retire quick like ABD. There is too mich cricket nowadays

A hyperbole. I've my doubts over him playing WC '23, forget about WC '27.

He is managing his workload and tends to skip Limited Overs series against weak teams quite frequently. For example, the Asia Cup and the Sri Lanka ODIs and T20Is last year.

In a couple of years, he might retire from T20Is altogether. Anyway, there is no chance of him missing the 2023 World Cup on home soil.

A hyperbole. I've my doubts over him playing WC '23, forget about WC '27.

He would be about 35, and thats not too old for batsman, especially with his fitness.

And WC '23 is in India. India will be one of the favourites. Would not make sense for him to retire before that.

Also, the way he is talking about test cricket, I have a feeling he will retire from ODIs after the WC '23 and continue to play tests for a couple of years. That might allow him 2 more rounds of away tours of SENA countries.

Yes guys, ignore all the historic, economic facts and predict how '100% intense' Virat would quit in 4 years time. LMAO.

He's playing all formats till 2027 guaranteed barring a career ending injury.

Nor will he retire on his own. He'd have to be forced out too with an acceptable exit strategy much like Dhoni.

Take it to the bank.

I disagree with this. I think he is going to walk away before he becomes a shell of his former self with the public waiting to see his back.

Asian players dont retire early. Kohli will play till 2027 WC and retire by then, however, I am not sure of his form after 2023 WC.

35 isn't too old but the kind of intensity with which he plays, no. of games he plays, kind of back breaking responsibility on him to carry his team on his own, I doubt whether he'll have anything left in tank after 3-4 years max.

OK, may be WC '23, but certainly not after that. However if he plays on, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Also, I got hints when he said recently that he won't touch a cricket bat once he hangs his boots.

Kohli is an aussie batsman born in india and just like most aussies he will retire before age catches up .
I think he will retire at age of 35.

Can you mind read or did Tendulkar tell you that personally?

200 test caps milestone, lol....

200 test caps is a milestone as he's the most capped cricketer in the history of test cricket. A record which I don't think will ever be broken.

So in future I advise you to think before you spaz out on the keyboard.

Playing cricket at the top level well into your 30s isn’t just about fitness. There have been some superfit world class players who just seem to lose the plot at a certain age and they can’t get their form back. Ponting for example - there was nothing wrong with his fitness yet his batting form was lost fairly early compared to some other players.

Dhoni and Yuvraj too - they lost the ability to time the ball like they used to. Yet they are still very fit.

Cook was very fit, so was ABDV. And several others.

Cricket longevity isn’t just about physical fitness.

Kohli is different I think he will retire at the top of his game might continue IPL for a few extra years though..

I might be one of the minority but i think his intensity has decreased slightly since Eng. So, maybe the start of his slow down.

Kohli relies heavily on bat speed for a lot of his shots. You lose this somewhere around 32-33. If he makes it past 36 and maintains his form I'll be very surprised. But since it is Kohli nothing about him should surprise me. Man is a machine.

Should leave T20s after 2020 wc.
ODI till 2023 WC is certain...thats long way to go...can easily go past 15000 runs ~60 centuries by then.

His achievement will be humongous even if he retire early in 2023.

He can quite confortably play ipl+Test for 2-3 years more. 13k with 45 100s is realistic.
Basically 2nd to tendy in stats in both the formats.

Every 4-5 matches, he scores 1-2 100s, if he plays total 500 games in all of Tests, ODIs and T20Is he will achieve the 100 hundreds.

I reckon he will retire by 36 years, possibly stop playing T20 and ODIs after the WC in india and play tests till hes around 36 and leave it there.

This.^^

Everybody thought that Captain Cool is a smart guy, capable of taking hard decisions against personal interests and won't soil his legacy. Boy did he showed us.

His 50 in last match pretty much guaranteed him WC berth regardless of his performance in the next 10 matches.

Thing is that fan boys can't look past cricket. Dhoni was once the biggest brand in India and VK is much much larger than Dhoni ever was.

You are talking hundreds of millions of dollars. Its not just cricket.

I repeat my question, did Tendulkar himself tell you that he was gunning for becoming most capped test cricketer so that the record doesn't get broken, ever?

would've been better to have answered that instead of typing that last line....

Yeah, I do think so too.

That he is still making runs for India, shows how determined person he is.

Bhaiya runs pe runs maar raha banda, retirement ki baten kyu ho rahi hai! I think Kohli is just halfway of his career.
