South Africa, England, Australia and New Zealand are the toughest conditions for subcontinent batsmen to bat in (especially, now that its hard to consider WI among top 6 teams in the world)

Kohli, is already second only to Tendulkar in terms of centuries scored in these countries. Kohli has already scored 10 centuries, while Tendulkar has 17.

Here's how they have fared -

SRT - 17 centuries in 63 tests at 51.30.
Kohli - 10 centuries in 23 tests at 52.
Dravid - 10 centuries in 49 tests at 49.5.
Sangakkara - 7 centuries in 30 tests at 46.
Inzamam - 5 centuries in 37 tests at 42.
Younis Khan - 5 centuries in 30 tests at 44.

If Kohli's peak lasts 3-4 more years, i can see him surpassing SRT as well. What a batsman..

That's a ridiculous tons/test outside Asia for an Asian batsmen.

I think India should drop him as captain.

Although he has improved his batting since becoming the captain, it has also added white hairs to his beard (his own words).

Dropping him might have the intended effect of further motivating him, which is scaring considering how much he has succeeded so far.

The greatest batsman of the last 30-40 years. We are blessed to witness a once in a lifetime cricketer at the peak of his powers.

That’s going a bit too far.

He still has to surpass in Tests specifically...

Waugh
Lara
Tendulkar
Richards

Would have added Ponting but for his abysmal record in India.

In Tests he has a way to go before surpassing them, but I feel it is only a matter of playing enough games. With the way he is going, and at the rate at which he is churning out tons with 6-7 top years left in the tank, it is frightening to think where he will stand after playing his 100th Test.

He is already a top 3 batsman ever in white ball cricket. Unless something bizarre happens, it is hard to see anyone standing in his way when he hangs his boots.

It is incredible how he keeps answering questions and keeps overcoming challenges. The big question mark now is performing in a World Cup, but only a fool would bet against him.

Not only is the best batsman in the world by a distance, he is also one of the most influential players in history. His name will be remembered in history like few others, and the 2010 era will be remembered for the Kohli era.

A king among men.

Mann. This gave me goosebumps. Appreciate the spirit mate

But he can't score against his bunny Rubel Hussain.

In my view he’s already the greatest Limited Overs batsmen of all time.

He’s definetly the greatest batsmen of our time and he could well end up being the best batsmen of the last few decades.

Agreed If he keeps going like this for next 3 years. It will be very hard not to put him amongst the best test batsmen. I reckon he still has some problems in test but he will eventually pass all those barriers. In ODI he is already in a top 3 of all time.

Agree to all above. This superhuman turns batting into an art and incredibly easy too. The pressure of captaincy was the lone reason he could not convert today's tone into double hundred.

In the previous tour, his technical flaws were exposed. But for the tough man couldn't have compromised with it hence this metamorphosis. For Kohli in batting, scoring is an obsession and perfection is an art. I have 35 years of experience with international cricket. And I have never found a batsman as complete as Kohli. Chilling stuff indeed!

Kohli's conversion rate is phenomenal. 10 Hundreds to 7 50's. Only second to Asif Iqbal. 7 Hundreds to 4 50's. Then Azharuddin. 6 hundreds to 5 50's.

ManFan,
Back in the days, WI was the hardest overseas tour for the Subcontinent batsmen. I know for sure if you add that then Gavaskar and Dravid's stats would jump.

I have watched Cricket for over 15 years now, and I would like to add that none of those greats were exposed to such difficult batting tracks in SA or England. It is only Australia where Kohli is having it easier.

He is a class act.

He is GOAT material no doubt. Let's he how close he can get to Tendu.

Current Ranking of Asian Batsmen in tests:

1. Sachin
2. Gavaskar
3. Dravid
4. Kohli
5. Sangakara
6. Miandad/YK

That is very harsh statement to say. All the batsmen have faced treacherous conditions and have survived or got out early.

Check old matches from India's tours in 90s and you will see the conditions are more or less the same. The only test was the 3rd test against SA where Kohli made 47 odd runs which you can say was extremely difficult pitch to bat on and that innings of Kohli can be rated very very highly.

This is why i did not put Miandad and Gavaskar in the list...

During most of Dravid's career (excluding the 1997 tour of WI) the WI attack wasn't really strong...

Also, i don't think Kohli has faced any easy overseas tours...all these hundreds have come against Steyn, Rabada, Philander, Anderson, Broad, Johnson, Starc, Harris, Hazelwood, Bolt, Southee etc who are great bowlers.

SRT and Viv have been my favorite batsman for a long time. Kohli has it in him to surpass them both .

Scored runs when conditions were batting friendly. Still have major issues with the moving ball as evident in second test.

Slightly less bowling friendly conditions is not the same as batting conditions. Ball has seamed and swung almost all the time, there has been cloud cover for nearly 75-80% duration in the three tests. Don’t be blinded by hate to rundown a special achievement

Most of the batsmen in the OP (except Sachin) made hay in the 2000s, which I consider to be the flattest era for Test batting. I could be wrong, but that's the impression I have.

The WI stopped being the hardest tour for sub-continent batters after 1993.

AUS and SA have since than been the hunting ground for sub-continent players.

The current tour of England has the toughest conditions out of all the ones faced by SRT, Dravid imo. Also SRT never really faced great attacks when he made the most runs there (96.02)

While the attack Kohli faced in SA this year (Steyn, Rabada, Philander, Ngidi) is better than any SA attack faced by SRT or Dravid in SA. The closest probably being Donald , Pollock, Klusener in 1997.

So i would more or less agree with BlackShadow.

Kohli has destroyed any and all expectations and surpassed them. I am scared what he is going to do in Aus and NZ in this form.

Like I said current team has not exactly faced any extraordinary conditions which previous teams did not face.

The only one you can argue for was 3rd Test against SA which was nightmarish pitch.

Other than that english, SA conditions have always been same. In these countries its same, if you are lucky sun will rise and you can make runs in 2nd and third session. It is still the same in current series. I do agree with the bowling part Anderson/Broad are better than Cork/Gough/Caddick/Fraser etc.

SA conditions and bowling attack is similar in terms of deadliness since they came back in 1992. They are blessed to always have couple of top notch bowlers and pleothra of fast bowling all rounders. The line up which current team faced was more or less same as to what any other team faced in SA in the past.

The greatest asian batsman in away conditions of all time

Great player ..has a solid chance of being GOAT of all formats in upcoming years

Potentially greatest batsman of all time, he will blow all records out of the park if he keeps going at this pace. Most importantly, he wins games. Legend

Please watch all three tests, watch the conditions, ball movements and then comment. He is right up there with legends.

This conversion is unreal. Looks like he will surpass SRT's tons in those toughest 4 countries with ease. If he can do that and bring the WC home with his batting he will be the greatest Asian batsmen ever.

But we were told he was a joker against the moving ball.

Running out of words to describe how good Kohli is. Phenomenal player who keeps on breaking records and maintain high standards.

Wonder why the 95 tour of Aussies and 97/98 tour to WI is rated so highly. Surely the knocks of Steve Waugh against Ambrose was on a pancake!

Probably the greatest batsman ever at that point considering he's also GOAT in T20Is.

It was rated highly because it was the first time in fifteen years that they lost a series.

The standard of the WI went into nosedive right after the class of 91’ retired.

The likes of Lara, Ambrose, and Walsh, managed to keep it competitive but the sheer domination that they had inflicted earlier was demonstrated to be over.

They were about to lose in AUS when they won by one run, they just kept SA from humiliating them at home in their return to international cricket and by the end of the decade, managed to lose a Test series in England; the final nail in the coffin.

Kohli is more a purposeful player if i have to use a term. He makes sure his innings amounts to something. I always like players who contributes in both innings not being content with doing well in just one innings. Dravid was very good at it. Kohli is a bit like that.

Headingley 2002.

Headingley 2002.
That was tough on day 1 after which batting became easier. Here ball is seaming and swinging all the time.

Add to it the quality of bowling attack - Anderson, Broad, Woakes and Stokes >>> Hoggard, Caddick, Flintoff and Tudor

Not counting NZ who are not treated as a strong test nation and looking at the 3 toughest tours for subcontinental batsmen in the modern era (1975 onwards; Aus, England and WI until 93, SA since) and only looking at proper sized 3(+) match tours, we have had only 7 instances when an Indian batsmen has topped the aggregate batting charts for the tour

Gavaskar (1979 England)
Mohinder Amarnath (1983 WI)
Gavaskar (1985-86 Australia)
Vengsarkar (1986 England)
Tendulkar (1996 England)
Tendulkar (2007-08 Australia)
Kohli (2018 South Africa)

Gavaskar also topped in the WI tour of 1971 but they were not very good back then.

Can one of the PP knowledgeable folk add the same for Pakistan and SL?

This guy has united the entire of Pakpassion lol, everybody here now falls into his aura of an all time great batsman regardless of what their differing opinions are on other aspects of cricket.

I recall a time about 4-5 years back when some people said that he will remain an average test bat but be a top LOI batsman.

That's the magic of Kohli, unlike many other cricketers who he plays with and against, he has strong will, desire and passion to work on his craft and constantly look to improve. That is what separates a good cricketer from a potential all time great, the love of the game and seeing yourself as a student of it.

It was rated highly because of the bowling display of WI bowlers. Just because WI didn't have the famous quartet, didn't mean they didn't have nasty fast bowlers. They still had Walsh and Ambrose, and few youngsters , in the 90's, who were genuinely quick and nasty.

South Africa 2010/11 anybody?

That was an incredible tour where we fought toe to toe with Steyn at his peak.

We were #1 on merit at that time.

Scored runs when conditions were batting friendly. Still have major issues with the moving ball as evident in second test.

Lmao, this is the same thing you guys fid with with sachin. Kohli is never ever allowed to fail, not even in one tests. It is incredibly ridiculous and petty.

And batting friendly or not, he has double the runs of the second highest scorer in the series and triple the scores of the third highest. If it was batting friendly more batsmen would score

Add another 2 centuries to the tally by the time this series ends. He'll easily surpass the other greats to become the greatest of all time

Only Batsman to score 500+ runs in a series in both AUS and ENG

Rahul Dravid (AUS -619, ENG-602)

Kohli is 60 runs away from joining him (AUS-692, ENG-440*)

Batsmen scoring 200 or more runs in a Test most times:

17 Sangakkara
15 Lara
14 Bradman
13 Ponting
12 KOHLI

He has reserved his worst only for IPL (RCB team). Wouldn't mind it to be so if he can achieve another awaited feat (World cup ODI)

4 years ago - Kohli is great in LOIs but will remain an average test batsman with 40sh average

2 years ago - Kohli is at least good at home in tests like most other Asian batsmen. Wish he hit the big hundreds

1 year ago - 6 double hundreds later. Kohli has done a wonderful job to take his test average above 50 but remains unproven in England.

Today - 450 runs in 3 tests in England. More than double the runs compared to 2nd highest scorer in series from both teams. Kohli is destined to go down as one of the greats

If anyone says that he doesn't think that Kohli is the greatest test batsman in fast bowlijg favorable conditions of Eng/SA/Australia/NZ to come out of Asia, then he is simply lying. No batsman not even Tendulkar comes close to Kohli when it comes to scoring runs with the kind of authority he does. Right comparisons for Kohli's style of play are Ponting and Richards.

Zero test hundreds in Uruguay, Burkina Faso and Nauru.

OP should include WI as well. They were great team back and here we are talking of SC teams only.

Also, its not like Kohli's record won't look impressive if we include WI. He has a double hundred there.

Look at the consistency maintained by SRT while playing more than 60 games.
That's what you call an ATG.

I still think he is not in SRTs class but he is getting there however he just doesnt have that wow factor which SRT had at his peak.. However I am often curiously wondering how Kohli would have fared against Mcgrath who imo is the greatest fast bowler of all time...

For me he has already surpassed Tendulker to become the best batsman from Asia. Just needs a good world cup and he'll have nothing more left to prove to anybody.

He will be a solid GOAT contender if he does well in WC elimination round. Has nothing more to achieve.

I think SRT looked like the perfect batsman at his peak...Head position, footwork etc... were textbook. But Kohli has an edge mentally. Under pressure, Kohli becomes a different beast. Kohli has the hunger of Tendulkar and the toughness/grit of Viv...Which is the best possible combination I can think of, for a batsman.

Kohli's is an absolute champ. A bonafide great for sure. I think if we were nitpicking for the sake of attaining perfection then it would have to be the number of away centuries effecting test wins and subsequently series wins. You wouldn't put it beyond kohli to achieve that before finally hanging up his boots.
I was looking up Saeed Anwar's test centuries and noticed he scored 7 out of his 11 centuries away from home including centuries in Australia, New Zealand, England, South Africa, India and Sri Lanka. 6 of the 7 resulted in test wins, the only loss came in Brisbane. That is some record for a man who played a mere 50 odd test matches. I think he should be up there somewhere in that list.

Yes, how could I forget Anwar ? :)

Although , very few of Kohli's away centuries may end up as series winning or match winning imho. He doesn't have the luxury of having legendary pacers like Wasim/Waqar in his team who can help regularly pick up 20 wickets in a match.

By the way, Saeed Anwar has scored 4 centuries in 15 matches at 43.03 in these countries. This is a great record for an opener...

Wow, Pretty astonishing. Considering Sehwag has like 4 in 30 Tests( in 56 completed innings!) , that too at 30 odd average, and he's considered a great subcontinental opener. Sehwag though was an absolute beast in Asia

Kohli - 11 centuries in 27* tests at 51.00.

His show in SA/Eng and this Perth test has elevated his stature to another level.

This year has been worst for batsmen all around but one should look at Kohli's stats to see how head and shoulders he is above everyone!

This is why he gets benefit of the doubt and is up there with the best ever in my view, Smith is the only other batsman to score runs so freakishly.

He's a better player than Tendulkar.

Kohli will easily win his side the 2023 World Cup.
