Was Brendon McCullum right to retire after the Australian series?

Inspired by the Joe Root thread where posters suggested it made more sense for McCullum to retire in the T20 WC in India as opposed to in front of his friends and family in Christchurch against Australia.

Worth noting he had made this decision before the series and only announced it because of the WC squads being named.

He did right to call it off. His batting won't have missed anyways because they come once out of 10.

What went wrong with NZ was that just after BMac retired, Kane lost his form for a while under captaincy as he couldn't absorb that pressure. So, a case could be made with BMac quitting the captaincy and supporting Kane to let off that extra pressure of captaincy which affected his batting and then with time, he could call it off.So that is the only argument which can be made against that decision of retirement.

However, we have to understand that a player who has been a great servant for the country has the right to decide when he wants to retire and the decision should be left up to the person himself. We as keyboard warriors have no right to indulge into that.

If he had no desire to play on then whats the point to play on? He would only have been a burden.

He should have retried in World T20, this is the only format in which he is world class.

I think it would have been better for him to retire after the world t20 but if he felt he couldn't offer anymore he made the right call.

He shouldn't have retired before a world tournament. Selfish. He is still playing in leagues so I have no doubt he would have increased, not decreased, NZ's chances of winning that tournament.

Kiwis whatever their commitments, their nation comes first. McCullum transformed a weak team into a world beater and fighting unit. For them playing for the country is a moral responsiblity. He already had contributed his bit and knew there are more who could do better than him. Same thing can be said with Ronchi. For them playing T20 leagues is less pressure. If it was not for McCullum, Fakhar Zaman would have never played for Pakistan.

ITs a shame for us that in recent years foreigners like Woolmers, Mickey Arthur and McCullums have contributed more for Pakistan cricket than our seniors and former cricketers like Inzamam. The foreigners decisions have worked more than our chief selector contribution in forcing his coward nephew Imam[who refused to play in the NZ conditions fearing his place] , Maliks, Akmals and Hafeez, in the side over deserving talent.

They don't make their countrymen happy though. When Grant Elliot was seen watching the match in the crowd with his family. Commentator Ian Smith made a nasty comment calling him a 'T20 mercenary'.

T20 WC is worthless, no one in NZ cares about it.

He made the decision before the series and wanted to announce it after the match.

An Australian Test series at home was the perfect send off for him.

Not some random T20 match in India which most of the country wouldn't watch.

Bmac does care about T20s though.

Good Decision...
As a player he was never missed but as a Captain he was definitely missed.

Finalists of the last world cup?

not to forget they were the best team in the World T20 till the knockout stage, but Kane has been inconsistent since he became captain, the average is still high but the match winning performances have declined.
But BMac retired because of his chronic back problem mainly

He can retire anytime he wants. He had a fairly successful career so he had full rights to call it quits. Not that NZ is in deep trouble at the moment, they still have Guptill, Taylor, Williamson, Boult and Wagner

It was his decision. No one else's opinion matters.
