His keeping was so smooth. The way he collected the ball, his positioning and how he took catches was amazing.

When I was a kid I used to like Moin Khan over Rashid (and I don’t even know why) but now that I look back at old matches there just is no comparison between the two in wicket keeping.
One is a Rolls Royce and the other is a Fiat. Moin was slightly the better batsman but definitely as a package Rashid was always ahead and the only reason he didn’t play more was that he wasn’t liked in the corridors of power due to him breaking the fixing scandals.

Even outside Pakistan I think he is one of the best wicketkeepers post 1990. Perhaps Ian Healy and Mark Boucher give competition.

He's the best pure wicketkeeper in Pakistan history, no question.

I think technically Healy might have been slightly better, but Latif is right up there on merit. It was a travesty how he didn't play more tests ahead of an absolute wreck like Moin.

Lol people say Kamran Akmal was bad but tbh Moin Khan was not very far behind. He didn’t have as many howlers so you can’t easily make a highlight reel like Kamran’s and it doesn’t stick to the mind, but his keeping was very untidy. Conceded so many byes in ODIs and in tests dropped crucial catches on several occasions.

Latif averaged 38 with the bat in last 15 test matches(after he made a comeback in 2001). This was his peak years, and retired too early(his offical age was his real age unlike other cricketers)

Latif didn't play much because he stood up against match fixers.

Latif was much the better keeper So clean, athletic and graceful He made it look easy

Theres was no competition with moin as far as keeping quality is concerned he was that far ahead

Latif was a lovely keeper, almost as good as Wasim Bari but a much better batsman.

He was also a better Test batsman than Moin Khan, simply because he had a far better temperament and didn’t throw away his wicket.

I remember writing in 1991 that Moin Khan should score 4000 Test runs and take 400 catches. And yet within a year Latif emerged.

Latif was cool in a crisis, could catch and didn’t beat women. It’s scandalous that he played so few Tests, but was inevitable for one of the few 1990’s players who refused to tolerate his teammates fixing.

With what I have heard, Wasim Bari was the best keeper Pakistan ever had. The only problem was that he was a Javagal Srinath level test batsmen. In contrast, Rashid was an excellent keeper(probably second best from Pak ) and an equivalent to Wridhimann Saha with the bat.

Rashid was a good keeper to fast bowlers, average to spinners. He was a solid bat but should have done better

Exactly opposite of Moin,he was good to spinners.
Pakistan made a mistake by picking Moin on overseas tours
They should have picked Latif on SENA tours and Moin at subcontinent tours.

Lovely hands.

The ball just landed into his gloves beautifully.

One of the best, but his form really dropped when he was struggling as captain.

If you find on YouTube highlights of the 1993 Test series in West Indies, Moin has some shockers that rival Kamran's worst moments.

Moin was a handy batter, his lower order knocks in the 1999 WC were vital in setting competitive totals. Rashid was more athletic and a better keeper, but his batting was mostly very ordinary.

At least there was competition for the keeping role though unlike recently where Kamran and Sarfraz had a monopoly on the position and got lazy.

Latif dropped Marcus Trescothick of Shoaib Akhtar in the third ODI in 2003. It was a very simple straight forward catch and extremely vital at a pivotal stage in the game. Pakistan lost the series 2-1. A minor blemish and he was the captain as well so you can excuse him a touch for it. But no doubt the best keeper compared to Moin, Kamran, Sarfaraz.

How do the likes of Wasim Bari, Salim Yousaf, Rashid Latif compare from a wicket keeping point of view?

He was an unbelievable glovesman. After the legendary Syed Kirmani, i will rate him the second greatest glovesman to emerge from Asian bloc.

There was a lot going on behind the scenes when he was captain, with several players not happy with him and of course the fixing stuff.

That definitely affected Latif.

Latif comes across as a holier than thou individual. To me he personally destroyed his credibility by cheating and claiming a blatantly dropped catch against Bangladesh in 2003. Even Ramiz Raja in the commentary box was flabbergasted and struggling to defend him inspite of trying his best and I even remember his words "I know Rashid to be a very honest, upright person but I am just lost for words here"

Among Pakistanis I would say Bari.

Best I ever saw was probably Bob Taylor, who was kept out of the side by the batting of Alan Knott. They were pretty much equals as keepers but Taylor stood up to the medium pacers more. The lasst keeper I saw do that was Jack Russell in the nineties.

Latif is a difficult and mercurial character, prone to emotional outbursts and impulsive decisions. He was a poor politician in arguably Pakistan cricket's toughest era off the field, he made too many enemies because he couldn't compromise or play the game. Some would say that's a good quality, as at least he can claim to look in the mirror and not reproach himself about giving into the fixers or the other malcontents running the board.

But as a keeper, I've not seen a more naturally talented one in Pakistan. I never saw Wasim Bari play live but off the archive footage I have seen, and the fact that he didn't keep to an attack with such varied characteristics, I would rank Latif marginally ahead.

At the end of the day, Latif should have always been Pakistan's number one test keeper during the 90s, with Moin pigeonholed solely as limited overs keeper due to his superior batting.

He and Basit didn't come out in good light, as well as the others during those 'dark days'.

Politics, back-stabbing, dog-eat-dog. Horrible times.

Had he not been a world class wicket keeper, he could very easily have ended up as the Zulqarnain Haider of that era

I found Rashid Latif kind of overrated. Moin Khan was equally better and he could bat much better.

No way moin was on par with latif as a keeper Moin had plenty of shocking series as keeper including the 2000 eng series where he was awful as keeper n captain too

This is baseless.

Rashid saved Pakistan cricket. He brought the fixing to the limelight; otherwise it might not have come out in the open till much later

His contribution to Pakistan cricket and the game in general goes way beyond on-field performances.

None of that lot were innocent. Those who believe it are very naive.

Latif was a pretty good keeper but the best? No I don't think so, not even the most natural seeming keeper either. Healy, Boucher, Gilly or Pakistan's own Bari. We shouldn't forget, for all the hate wel ove to give Kammy, he has slightly more than 2 dismissals per innings, there aint that many keepers globally who can match or supersede that. Not even Latif or Moin or Bari.

That's a big claim.

I was active in journalism in the 1990's, and I would half-agree with you, dividing the Pakistan cricketers (and all other international cricketers) into three camps.

CAMP 1
These people fixed, especially the new white ball form of the game which was viewed as "hit and giggle" and not taken that seriously. ODIs had used a red ball (except in Australia) until the 1992 World Cup. Justice Qayyum made pretty clear who these players were.

CAMP 2
These players were clean for long periods, and eventually gave in and started fixing themselves as it seemed pointless to resist. Qayyum identified Basit Ali as one such player.

CAMP 3
These players were always clean and never fixed or were bribed. But they were outnumbered in the dressing room, and basically did not - could not - report what they were witnessing. From Pakistan the players in this category were Aamir Sohail, Aaqib Javed, Rameez Raja and Rashid Latif. They were the clean players, but actually ended up behaving exactly like Umar Akmal or Brendan McCullum in failing to report illegal activity.

The problem is that all former international cricketers of the 1990s at best fall into Camp 3 like Umar Akmal. And as long as any cricketer active between 1990 and 1999 remains involved in cricket administration or international coaching, the cricket world cannot be above board.

not many have dropped 80+ catches in their international career either

Kami also got a lot more dismissal opportunities because of the people he kept to. Divide it as dismissals per opportunity and you’ll get a different story.

What would you mean by that? Are you saying while he kept to Asif, Amir, Gul, Rana Naved and various other Pakistani bowlers he had more opportunities than Latif keeping to Akram, Waqar, Akhtar and co?

Where does this number come from?

There was thread here once.

Also he had dropped 65+ by 2011 so pretty sure he’s hit 80 by now

Will share link when on laptop

That's a big claim.

It's an honest claim.

Different groups of Pakistani players were working with different groups of bookies.

Some were caught, others weren't.

Some portrayed themselves as angels when they were far from it. Some pointed the finger at others when they themselves were corrupt. Others made big claims, but failed to provide concrete proof when it mattered.

Alright thanks! I'd be curious to know the source.

This is from Ammar Ashraf.

Ninety five (95) dropped catches and missed stumpings as of March 2014. Does not include the many byes and catches he didnt even attempt. Or run out misses.

Here it goes:

Let us count his Dropped catches and Missed Stumping (13 July 2006 onwards ODIs, T20s and Tests).

63.2 Collingwood was on 79(Final Score = 186)
Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, gone, out, no! Dropped! Leg-cutter, outside edge straight to Kamran Akmal ? dreadful shot from Collingwood I might add ? and, somehow, Akmal shelled it. Deafening silence from the captain Inzamam-ul-Haq, and not much more being said from the slips. Ooh, that?s a shocker

38.2 Collingwood was on 21(Final Score = 31)
Shahid Nazir to Collingwood, no run, yikes, Collingwood hangs his bat out to dry ? good away-swing from Shahid again ? but it passes his outside edge. Nevertheless, Akmal somehow drops a clanger and the ball bobbles from his gloves

5.4 ME Trescothick was on 7(Final Score = 58)
Umar Gul to Trescothick, no run, DROPPED, Kamran Akmal has dropped him. A terrific ball from Gul rising on Trescothick who feathers an edge. Gul goes up to celebrate but Akmal, with iron gloves, clangs a sitter

Mohammad Sami to Prince, no run, ooh, dropped by Akmal. That was a long way across Prince, who slashes a thick edge through and it pops in and out of Akmal's gloves at chest height. What a costly miss that could be - Prince has been in such good form

22.3 Gibbs was on 2 (Final Score = 2)

70.1 Kallis was on 63 (Final Score = 91)
Danish Kaneria to Kallis, no run, oh no - has Akmal dropped yet another one? Ooh, not sure - Kallis went chasing that one and seemed to feather it through to Akmal who drops it. But the replays are inconclusive. Akmal's having a poor match anyway.

103.1 MV Boucher was on 27 (Final Score = 46)
Mohammad Hafeez to Boucher, no run, Akmal drops another one! tossed up and this one turned back in sharply, Boucher defends on the back-foot and the ball clips the inside edge and goes behind but Akmal fails to hold on to a fairly easy chance. He is clearly having a tough time out there

55.6 Tendulkar was on 28 (Final Score = 82)
Mohammad Sami to Tendulkar, 1 run, dropped by Akmal. Not a surprise, actually. Only surprise is he usually catches Tendulkar. It was banged in short, outside off stump, Tendulkar decides late to go for a upper cut, doesn't connect properly and Akmal thrusts his right glove out but fails to hold on and ends up palming it behind him.

52.6 Hussey Was on 27 (Final Score = 134)
Danish Kaneria to Hussey, no run, trying playing defensively from the crease, Hussey's beaten by a ball that rips past the outside edge of his upright bat Subsquent replays suggest this may have been a dropped catch by Kamran Akmal. If it was it only got the faintest edge from Hussey's bat. Oh yes, definitely an edge looking at it from front-on.

Mohammad Amir to Strauss, no run, 136.0 kph, dropped! Kamran, what have you done? Perfect outswinger from Aamer, Strauss edges and Akmal puts down the simplest of chances. Kamran kept so well against Australia - relatively speaking, anyway - but this is the worst possible start for him against England
24) http://www.espncricinfo.com/england.../426413.html?innings=3;page=1;view=commentary
22.4 Collingwood was on 0 (Final Score = 1)
Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, 142.1 kph, oh no! Kamran has gone from hero back to zero! Dropped! After just pulling off a stunner he's put Collingwood down first ball, it was wide, Collingwood flashed a cut and edges it towards first slip, Akmal flew across and dropped the chance

25) http://www.espncricinfo.com/england...e/match/426415.html?innings=1;view=commentary
37.3 MJ Prior was on 29 (Final Score = 84*)
Mohammad Asif to Prior, 4 leg byes, 128.9 kph, and that one's dropped, but a very tough chance for Kamran. You can't expect him to take that - it's an inside edge onto the thigh and then sneaking past the stumps, Kamran dives and just gets his left fingertip to the ball as it runs away towards fine leg for a boundary
Steve Davis has called that leg byes, but there was an inside edge on it, no question
Pakistan in England Test Series - 4th Test

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, 1 leg bye, wow, that was quick and full on off, Bell drives but is beaten all ends up, ball brushes something but Akmal fails to collect it to his left, ball runs away and they steal one, umpire calls it leg byes, was there bat on that though? Looks like it, according to the replays

30) http://www.espncricinfo.com/engvpak/engine/match/225246.html?innings=1;view=commentary
6.6 Trescothick was on 6 (Final Score = 6)
Shoaib Akhtar to Trescothick, no run, good length ball on off, Tresco stands tall and drives but makes zero contact, a tight over coming to and end, should have had Bell but Akmal dropped another catch to add to his summer's tally of non-takes

Umar Gul to Gunasekera, no run, dropped by Kamran or did it go off the back thigh? It cut across from the leg stump line, went right across the batsman who was squared-up in defense. the ball flew to left of Akmal, who was initially moving to his right. He then threw a big dive with outstretched left hand but couldn't hold on. Replays don't confirm an edge. It seems it went off the thigh.

Shoaib Akhtar to Taylor, FOUR, Ross gets a birthday gift, it's the Kamran moment, Shoaib got the edge with a perfect delivery that zipped away just a shade, the ball flew between younis and Kamran, who initially appeared to go for it, and then did the keeper's version of shouldering arms, stood stone still, as a bemused Younis looked on

Shoaib Akhtar to Taylor, no run, oh I don't believe this, two birthday gifts is too much, from the same man too, Shoaib has Ross pushing at a one that held its line, and the healthy edge goes ever so slowly to Kamran who is in good position to take it, gets gloves on it, and clangs it, Shoaib can't do anything about it, boy is he distraught

Danish Kaneria to Collingwood, no run, missed stumping! Kamran's really not having a good day... Collingwood charged down the track, was beaten in the air and by the turn. He was practically walking off he was so far down, but Kamran fumbled the take, and couldn't pick the ball up before the batsman got back in. Kaneria really needed that wicket - Pakistan needed it!

Danish Kaneria to Prince, no run, stumping chance missed! A lovely teasing flighted delivery, again Prince comes down the track and is beaten by the flight and the dip. The ball threads through the bat and pad gap and is just outside off stump and Akmal clangs it. Would have been definitely out had he gathered.

Kept low there, pitched on a good length outside off, just fractionally wide of the off stump, and spun away, Mahela failed to get his bat down in time and the ball clipped his back pad on the way to the keeper. Replays indicate there was an inside edge, but a really tough chance there for the keeper.

Replays suggest Ponting probably got an inside edge. So perhaps we can put that one down as a drop to Kamran Akmal.

Raza Hasan to Amla, no run, dropped, Kamran's let Amla off. Amla tried to whack the ball inside out over the off side once again and edged it, fairly routine chance and Akmal fails to hold on. Amla was well out of his crease, could have been stumped as well

92) Mohammad Irfan to de Villiers, 1 wide, another one down the leg side and is called a wide. But there was some interest by the bowler. It did take a faint nick, but wouldnt have mattered as Kamran didn't take it cleanly

93) Saeed Ajmal to Amla, no run, beautifully bowled! How did that miss the stumps! It was tossed up outside off, it dipped in very quickly as Amla went for the drive and squeezes between the bat and pad, goes over the stumps. A stumping chance missed too as Akmal gets surprised by that too..It hits him on his chest

Saeed Ajmal to Finch, no run, another doosra and I cannot understand how that has missed off stump! Tentative push from Finch, who had not picked it and is lucky to survive as the ball bounces right over the off bail and thuds into the keeper's gloves and promptly falls out. There was an outside edge too Ajmal throws a forlorn look back as Pakistan drop a crucial catch

Total runs made by batsmen after dropped catches/Missed stumping so far = 2739

Really detailed work by whoever did this!

However this is missed catches AND stumpings. Either way it may be a lot, it may not, we would still require reference points for other keepers, especially top level keepers.

What we do know is that Kammy has the highest dismissals/innings or any Pakistani keeper and one of the highest ever. Only a handful have point something more than him (Gilly, Boucher, Dhoni and Prior I believe). Kammy clearly took more than any other Pakistan keepers, that was my point. Was he the best? No. Should be be remembered only for his missed chances? No.

Bottle went when he was captain.

He became a nervous wreck and was all over the place as a wicket-keeper. His head wasn't right and his form suffered badly.

Well I wasnt tryin to say he was a bad keeper. I just dont think he is good enough to be "the best". I remember him, back when I was a kid, both pre and during captaincy, he was pretty good behind the stumps. Just not the hack and slash batsman Moin was or as consistent as Boucher or Gilly.

I never said Kammy is Pakistan's best keeper, I said he is the one with the highest dismissals/innings, of any keeper with 200+ test dismissals, only five have a d/i ratio of 2 or more, Kammy is the only Pakistani in that list I believe. So he couldn't have been THAT bad.

How many chances were created? I have no idea. Could Kammy have had more chances than Latif, Moin or Bari? I doubt it considering Kammy was keeping to the likes of Amir, Asif, Gul, Rana Naved et al while the others kept to all time great bowlers. I doubt Rana Naved created more chances than Shoaib Akhtar.

As for who I think is Pakistan's best keeper, probably between Moin and Bari for me.

Moin is definitely not Pakistan's best keeper. Doubt even he will believe that lol

Its between Rashid and Bari

Also Wasim and Waqar and Shoaib Akhtar (especially the latter 2 pacey bowlers) relied less on the wicketkeeper and fielders than a bowler like Asif whose who game was movement and seam and getting edges and nicks. And he had the misfortune of having Kamran be his keeper. That is why Kamran may end up with more dismissals because Asif had to rely on keepers and fielders. But that doesnt mean Kamran did well by any means.

For eg. 53% and 57% of Wasim and Waqar's wickets are either bowled or lbw (hence no reliance on fielders) whereas for Asif it is 42%. Asif relied on fielders a lot yielding more chances for a keeper. Also percentage would even be higher if he had a competent keeper like Rashif Latif who would take those chances. Because Asif often had to rely on taking fielders out of the equation totally.

Similarly for spinners, it is widely accepted how many wickets Danish Kaneria never got due to Kamran's keeping. So many missed stumpings and caught behind its insane. You dont hear that for Mushtaq or Saqlain whose much was more difficult to keep to (Saqlain especiallY)

Point is more dismissal/innings is rudimentary metric if you do not take into account type of bowler and how they create chances.

For me Moin was the best wicket keeper batsman while Latif was the best pure keeper. People don't realize the value of Moin Khan, the guy was a true street fighter and was known as the man of crisis, he bailed Pakistan out from bad situations many times and he was also a clean striker of the ball at the death.

Also one important thing should be what do peers say. Invariably everyone picks Rashid over Moin as a keeper

Also one important thing should be what do peers say. Invariably everyone picks Rashid over Moin as a keeper

They will also pick Moin as a very tough street fighting cricketer who was regarded as the man of crisis from 1996 to 2001. He kept for Pakistan in the 1999 World Cup with a fractured finger and was taking painkillers.

I'd pick Kamran Akmal as being a better overall keeper-batsman than Moin Khan, who was atrocious behind the stumps. Even Sarfraz Ahmed has a fairly strong claim to be ranked above Moin in the list of Pakistani test keepers. Those trying to make the case for Moin probably only recall his batting in white ball cricket, especially during the 99 World Cup when he was admittedly world class.

Atta-ur-Rehman about Latif and Aamir Sohail

"There are many people claiming that they lifted the lid on match-fixing such as Rashid Latif; The affidavit that I was asked to write was done with the blessings of Aamir Sohail and Rashid Latif; Later on the this same affidavit was put in newspapers"

"They both claim to be great patriots but I ask them that they know Wasim Akram is involved in match-fixing so people in media should ask them why Akram played under their captaincy in South Africa; Was Wasim Akram OK then?"

"They say PSL is a gambler's League but they also joined PSL themselves; They do things for themselves, they have no love for the country - all they do is political stuff, they tape conversations with people and put them on them on media - thank you"

Wasim Bari is rated very highly.

I think Taslim Arif deserved more chances though. He came as stop gap for 6 tests once due to a Bari injury and averaged 62 with a double hundred against the Aussies. Bari was a tailender with 15 average

Bari is rated more highly purely as a wicket keeper than Rashid, however, Rashid is a much better batsmen and in general, an excellent keeper also.

Rashid Latif was famous for saying unpopular but right things. Moin Khan used to plat for PIA and was closer to captains of that time. Moin KHan in his early days was a horrible keeper but improved in his later days but it is a tragedy how Rashid latif's career was cut short multiple times

Might have been a good keeper in his time, but he has become a toxic, agenda driven analyst/journalist.

Nothing he says is in sincerity towards Pakistan cricket and is actually a mouthpiece for his agency

He had heart too, remember he got smacked by Zaheer’s bouncer and got up immediately so as to not let his hurt show.
Rizwan with all his acting should take lessons from Latif on how to face opposition.

Rashid Latif was an awesome wicketkeeper. He was a awesome destructive batter who missed out because of politics.

He was as good as Gilchrist when it came to hitting, but unfortunately was a victim of politics, or instead of Gilchrist he would have been the one credited with advent of aggressive wicketkeeper batters role in modern cricket. Whenever he batted against India, I hoped he would get out soon but with other teams I watched his batting whenever I got a chance hoping he would click that day.
Have heard his analysis too. Deep understanding of game and his views on management of the game are very good. Calls a spade a spade and nothing else.

Purely as a WK , he was most acrobat and athletic WK of Pakistan ever , in this respect he was ahead of Bari.
