Last year I was travelling Toronto-Manchester-Toronto.... on departure from Manchester I was given a full public pat down and had to watch as they emptied out my backpack and questioned every single item. I guess a young clean shaven Pakistani male travelling alone fit their exact profile.

Pathetic from the UK. Absolute sh!t country but act like they are so great. Canada is heaven compared to the hell hole which is the UK.

Calm down, the extra security is for everyones safety! Everyone here goes through the same procedure, no matter their skin colour. I had to take out my hair wax as it exceeded the ML restrictions.

Is Wasim Akram expecting that he be treated differently to everyone else who has to go through this?

Atleast one Pakistani agrees to my view about UK :))

Not everyone goes through this and it certainly has to do with skin color...

Hair wax is different since you’re breaking a rule

Airports stop based on colour, dress and facial hair. It is racial profiling. Anyone who thinks other wise is in denial.

Is Wasim Akram expecting that he be treated differently to everyone else who has to go through this?

He seems to think he was rudely questioned. What that means, I don't know. Perhaps he thinks as a superstar, being questioned at all is rude. Could be that the airport staff didn't recognise him, cricket is a minor sport in England.

Is this the first time Wasim has gone through Manchester airport, he should look at suing the airport.

No, everyone is not treated the same when going to UK , your skin color has lot to do with it. Everyone deserves respect .

That was a painful read, this is just so unfair.

On topic Wasim has every right to be miffed, is this the way to behave with a patient? Caucasians are treated like royalty in our desi airports, here even our star sportsmen, celebs (SRK, Kamal Haasan) and ex-Presidents (Kalam) are humiliated by the western airport authorities. Surely ordinary brown/black skin citizens will face a much tougher time at the hands of bullies.

So desi airports racially profile customers.

He's asking why Manchester airport's treatment of his insulin is different from all the other airports he's used.

The answer is on their website.

Security checks
For the benefit of all passengers’ security, departing passengers may be required to be screened using security (body) scanning equipment at Manchester Airport.

Our advanced technology scanners are part of a range of security measures, some of which may not be obvious. These include a deliberate element of unpredictability in their deployment. This means you may experience a different process than you did on your last visit to Manchester Airport.

Developed liberal countries should be held to higher standards than third world hellholes like India. My country is far from perfect and I will be the first person to admit that.

Everytime I am in one of the UK airports, i am "randomly" selected by security for a pat down.
100% of times!!
Explain that!

Who made this rule that some countries have to have higher standards?.

Wasim Akram should lodge a complaint.

This kind of incident happens from time to time. Some employees have too much attitudes and end up behaving rudely. Best thing to do is record the incident and upload it on social media.

You probably carry a laptop, every single time I pass through an airport carrying a laptop I get randomly selected. To prove my point I once asked my wife to carry the laptop and guess who got randomly selected.

I don't think it necessarily has anything to do with racism. It is just that some employees have attitude problems and they don't know how to treat customers/passengers.

I do not believe I should have been treated differently from anyone else. Traveled through Manchester airport several times and never had any issues. Don't understand all the drama around this. Security is for all of us and if someone has to go through a few extra checks that shouldn't be an issue and people should stop branding this as racial profiling.

I have relatives who suffer from asthma and have to show their inhalers and are asked questions by airport security staff. They don't get offended by it.

Sometimes employees have to put up with customers that dont treat them with respect and have a attitude. I see a lot of travelers fighting with staff and usually the customer is completely in the wrong.

It seems that he is upset that he was questioned.

I mean how can you be rudely questioned about medication.

Not the first time he is flying with his insulin and I am sure he has been questioned each and every time.

So what is the big deal this time, how was he humiliated, what was said this time and how was it different than other times?

I have relatives who suffer from asthma and have to show their inhalers and are asked questions by airport security staff. They don't get offended by it.

How do you explain removing your shoes etc when your other fellow passengers are never asked to do so? This has happened 4 times to me and the reason i am given is that i have metal, I only wear a ring. While i see other passengers are wearing all sorts of stuff and are never asked to take their belts , shows etc off.

You will be stopped if carrying such medical equipment, this is normal.

I think Wasims issue is the way he was spoken to.

I am just assuming now but there are a lot of Asian staff at airports esp Heathrow, Manchester and Birmingham. These are average jobs for people who just managed to pass their gcses at schools but some of these employees think they work for MI5 and their attitude stinks.

Since the so called 'liquid bomb' plot you have to remove your shoes, belts and pass through a scanner. I was once asked to do so without any courtesy or please, I refused until the idiot changed his attitude. After passing through, a couple of feds came to me asking me to show my passport, I refused and told them my flight was running late so jog on, they did.

Do not treat these people with any respect if they dont give you the same, they are just monkeys on the end of a security line.

Wasim should lodge an official complaint and move on.

I wonder how the people feel who he has ignored or shouted at when they politely ask him for a picture or an autograph? Do they feel humiliated and treated rudely?

Yes I have seen him do this at various matches on many occasions.

Treat others how you want to be treated.

It's happened to me.

No big deal. I don't take it personally.

It's fine if at least some of your other passengers are checked too when they are clearly wearing more then you. It's their attitude which is awful.

Haha, but we are all made from the same things and human at the end of the day :)

Obv I don’t know the situation but I think the staff may have been extra rude which is what must have irked wasim. Sometimes people at such places feel they have a lot of power and want to demonstrate it

You probably carry a laptop, every single time I pass through an airport carrying a laptop I get randomly selected. To prove my point I once asked my wife to carry the laptop and guess who got randomly selected.

I never take my laptop on vacations..being honest here....I was always looked as a suspect in UK airports....lol

Developed liberal countries should be held to higher standards than third world hellholes like India. My country is far from perfect and I will be the first person to admit that.

That maybe true for India, I know for a fact that there's a distrust of white people in Pakistan. My albino cousin has been pulled over in Pakistan when visiting from America.

Big talk from a country that doesn't even host a tiddlywinks tournament, forget cricket World Cup.

Must suck to live in a country where there is sunshine for only five days a year :)))

You are correct. Many customers have bad behaviors but workers need to have thick skins too. Some workers are probably not good enough to be in a customer service role.

This is where management has to play a strong role.

Don't see why he should be given preferential treatment. He doesn't define what he means by being "rudely questioned". Seems as if he thought everyone should have been on their knee's to him in awe:asghar

Lolz.

Kabhi Dubai airport to aao, khushbu laga kai.

Been there many times, the security is very relaxed compared to the UK. If you mean attitude of staff, they dont talk to you at passport control so no issues there too.

Lolz.

Btw I know he's a known entity there and may get some preferential treatment, try visiting as normal Pakistani, Indian, BD etc and you will really know what humiliation is. I know as I used to work there and know what they go through.

P.S. Same goes for all Gulf countries plus another few Arab and other countries.

Its because you have a British Passport.

Its because you have a British Passport.

Fair point. Ive never experienced any other flights from other nations.

Btw is the Al Maktoum International fully operational now? I flew into there once and it was pretty dead but I was told by the time of expo 2020 it will be the main airport, I did doubt this.

Not sure, have to ask my brother as he is a dispatcher in Terminal 1 at the moment and mentioned that they asked him to head something there.

Will let you know. If you do travel there I will tell him to be on the lookout for someone in Shalwar Qameez and sneakers and to give them the whole Marhaba experience. :ssa

Treat others how you want to be treated.
Celebs are always harassed and chased for pictures. Sometimes you are not in the mood or perhaps you don’t want to be bugged for pictures all the time. If I was a popular guy and people chased me for pictures all the time, obviously I will get angry and shout if I’m not in the mood. It gets tiring being demanded for pictures.

Celebs are humans too and they need their space.

We don't really know what happened. Maybe he just doesn't want to recap the entire thing but I'm sure he wouldn't have made such a big deal out of it if it was just few extra checks.

Wasim's issue is that he was asked to put his insulin into a plastic bag.
I don't understand why that is an issue.
If he was not allowed to carry his insulin forward, then that would have been an issue.

So that gives them the right to swear and shout at people (young and elderly) just because they are 'not in the mood'

I have also seen Wasim Akram abuse and shout at fans. He had a horrible "I haven't got time for you" attitude.

On one such occasion at a ground Wasim was abusing some fans who had politely wanted an autograph. My cousin (6'4" bodybuilding enthusiast) confronted Wasim and gave him a piece of his mind. He basically told Wasim that the fans made you a star etc. Wasim then shut up.

Also putting medication into clear bags is required at airports. Everyone has to do it, especially for diabetic solution for injections, so why is Wasim complaining?

Honestly Wasim the cricketer is to be admired (if you can get over his alleged involvement in the fixing saga) but Wasim the person, not so much.

What gives anyone (young and elderly) the right to demand photos from celebs? Sometimes people take photos without permission as well and invade privacy. If celebs shout or abuse at someone random who is not bothering them then celebs are in the wrong, otherwise they have the right to refuse and if someone still pesters them even after refusal any normal person will lose their cool.

This is nothing new. In UK these days, yes they single out Asian/Arab Muslim men for Random checks. However the airport officials in general are quite rough and rude from my experience when speaking with people.

Nobody has the right. Of course they don't. But if they are asking politely, what gives anyone the right to abuse them or shout at them just because they asked for a picture or autograph.

I've always found the security officers to be polite.
May be I've just been lucky.

Anyway, they're just doing their jobs and if everyone follows the protocol to begin with then their time won't be spent opening up their bags etc etc...

With regards to Wasim refusing photos. Of course he can refuse photos but there is absolutely no justification in being rude especially if the person requesting has been polite.
Wasim is where is now due to the fans, the fans who paid good money to watch him play cricket and bought the merchandise he endorsed.

Tbf that humiliation part is more if you are working there, tourists get along fine.

It may not be perfect, but this hell hole has given you everything that you have and made you everything that you are. Dont know why you suffer from this inferiority complex.

Why was he asked to take the insulin out of its cold case? If i rememeber correctly from my Pharma classes its recommended that insulin be stored at a colder temperature.

If your a,white male holding any passport, you are fine.

Non white, Asian esp south asian(Singapore exceptional) non western passport, you can expect a pat down, esp if you are travelling alone.

Non white with Western passport, you have some leeway.

Non white with a muslim name, expect pat downs.

Some of it is due to security, a lot of it due to racism.

Countries like India Pakistan BD etc must give the same treatment back to these whites. Look how the entire African union jumps up when a African is mistreated.

One of the reasons i dont carry any backpacks with me when i travel. I have a small travel pouch for my travel documents and i carry the Ipad in hand.

We don't really know what happened. Maybe he just doesn't want to recap the entire thing but I'm sure he wouldn't have made such a big deal out of it if it was just few extra checks.

Must admit, never really thought Wasim was the type to make a big fuss for no reason, always seems fairly easy going on tv.

Nobody has the right. Of course they don't. But if they are asking politely, what gives anyone the right to abuse them or shout at them just because they asked for a picture or autograph.

There's a time and place for everything. I am coming off a 20 hour flight tired at airport and 100 people come to me asking for photo. I refuse to 99 people politely but I'll snap at 100tg person.

I am with my kids and family spending personal time and people come for autographs and photos. I'll snap again after a while.

It's human nature, people make them celebrities but they are humans. They are no different than you or anyone else :).

Someone maybe going through personal problems, someone might be suffering from nicotine withdrawals where any small thing triggers them. You don't know their state of mind. Just because they are famous doesn't mean you should go to them and ask for autographs or photos. If they are at a promotional event then you can ask but if they are not and are spending their daily life then be prepared if you get a backlash from them.

So I don't agree with your viewpoint. Only time I agree with you is if they are at a promotional event there to take photos with fans and sign autographs and then become rude it's wrong. Any other time if you ask them for photo and invade their personal space then you should be ready for consequences if someone tells you off.

we still dont know what happened exactly? how were they rude did they shout or become aggresive? some clarification is needed from wasim because asking him to put his insulin in a plastic bag isnt rude in itself Its a must for security

The incidents I am referring to are when he was sat doing nothing at matches, charity events, promotional event and people very politely asked him for pictures or autographs.

People are too easily offended these days. I don't understand how a few extra security checks are the end of the world! I reckon it's a case of Wasim bhai feeling like he wasn't treated like a superstar. Cry me a river.

Same goes for airport workers, big signs everywhere explaining that medicines and fluids must be in a clear plastic bag. Regular travelers like Wasim would be totally aware of this. Security staff would be sick of people that just ignore the signs and expect that they dont have to follow the rules.

That’s not humiliating at all. Somebody should tell him that he is in a western country, nobody is going to treat him like VIP. In High School we had to take off our shoes, belts and go through the metal detectors. No body threw tantrums because we knew its for our safety.

So you're equating an international sports icon to highschoolers. Got you.

Also this we treat everybody in the West like a commoner thing doesn't fly. If you are a VIP then there are certain protocols and expectations in place, that's why they are VIPs.

Ofcourse it usually depends upon how big of a celebrity you are and how many people know you.

Waseem Akram has probably been through that airport a thousand times, he wasn't expecting this.

Insulin should be refrigerated, but you can keep it in room temperature for a couple of weeks. Taking it out for a few minutes in Manchester weather is not going to harm it by any means.

Wasim needs to be more specific here - how exactly was he humiliated? The airport staff is well within their rights to take necessary precautions.

I believe he objected to insulin being taken out of the cold case when he was boarding the flight.

The recommended temp range is 2.c to 7.c If its inside a pen or vial it can at max take temp upto 30.c

But thats not recommended.

Yeah I do acknowledge that and live in India unlike some patriots who fly away to 1st world countries at the first opportunity. No need for lessons, reserve that for those who actually flee the country and then exhibit their patriotism on online forums.

If India has to improve it must set high standards and accept its shortcomings, be hard on herself.
