What's new

West Indies (297 & 28/0) beat England (204 & 120) by 10 wickets in the 3rd Test - Take series 1-0

Windies 8 down.

Shaping up as a low scoring classic this match.

Some nice yorkers from Saqib Mahmood. Bowling how Pakistani pacers used to :(

West Indies edged into the ascendency in the third Test against England by opening a slim first-innings lead in Grenada.

Lower-order resistance saw West Indies end on 232-8, 28 runs ahead, despite being 128-7 at one stage.

Similar to day one when a last-wicket stand of 90 rescued England, wicketkeeper Joshua da Silva frustrated the bowlers late in the day with 54 not out, putting on 49 for the eighth wicket with Alzarri Joseph and 55 unbeaten with number 10 Kemar Roach.

England made a disappointing start with the new ball but took 6-45 in an impressive recovery either side of lunch.

After West Indies reached 50-0, Ben Stokes had Kraigg Brathwaite lbw with a ball that shot low while Chris Woakes took 3-48 - his best figures in an overseas Test since December 2017.

That put the tourists on course for a lead of their own but as batting became easier in the final session, wicket-taking again looked difficult.

However, on a pitch showing signs of uneven bounce against thr harder ball, both sides will still believe they can win what is likely to be a low-scoring game.

A victory for either team would see them take the series with the score currently 0-0 after two drawn Tests.

Beautifully poised match.

Lovely innings from de Silva.

Good test so far.
Weird pitch, gets easier to play on late in the day.
Da Silva is really good for Windies, hard to get out and applies himself well. Reminds me of Watling in terms of his attitude and determination.
He should bat higher up the order.
Jason Holder at 6 seems ridiculous, i think he should bat below JDS and Mayers.
England's obsession with Overton is weird, does not look international level as a bowler, especially a new ball bowler. Could understand if he was a workhorse bowler who was their to bowl the tough overs and chip in 25-30 with the bat.
Saqib has been very good so far, should be in contention in the summer.

Very close game.

Already some nails being bitten.

Could end up being like some of the classically tight Eng-WI Tests from the late nineties and early noughties.

Seems to me that the Pitch has flattened here as it sometimes happens in WI where pitch becomes good for batting as the play moves on to Day3 , 4 and 5.

WI lead by 93 runs at end of their first innings. Still expect England to put up a better performance in this innings.

ENG 204
WI 297 (116.3) CRR: 2.55
Day 3: Lunch Break - West Indies lead by 93 runs

Another poor innings from Zak Crawley.

Playing fast and loose outside the off stump, couple of flashy boundaries, then gets out for a cheap score.

Like a bargain basement Viru Sehwag at the moment is this guy.

One should not underestimate England here , 150 plus lead will be tough to chase , it will keep them in hunt

Poor match for Root with the bat. Back to back failures.

This match and series for England both now hanging by a thread.

One of England’s batters needs to play as well as Joshua Da Silva did for the Windies. Otherwise it’s all over.

Oh man why you would leave that ball when Mayers has been bowling those inswingers ?

Dan Lawrence goes too.

Stokes is the key wicket here , he can change the course of game anytime with both bat and ball.

England trail by 52 runs , England would be looking to get a lead of at least 150 runs here

WI 297
ENG 204 & 43/4 (21) CRR: 2.05
Day 3: Tea Break - England trail by 50 runs

This has been pathetic from England today.

They look like a bunch of club cricketers on tour.

England are trailing by 31 runs with 6 wickets in hand.

They are not out of the game yet. One big partnership can change things.

Yes, as long as Bairstow is in then England can set some sort of a target for the West Indies. 125-150 perhaps. The problem is that not many batters have looked truly “in” on this pitch.

Bairstow and Lees were going so well, we've seen conditions ease once the new ball goes soft.

A wild swipe and a run-out later...

WI are such terrible, inhospitable hosts..... ECB would be really disappointed. Look at how Australia was taken care off in the recent weeks.

It's England's own fault tbh. If they did a thorough full tour of Pakistan rather than run away, would have had an away test series win in the pockets by now. Opportunity lost!

Foakes run out for 1.

Root head in hands on balcony.

Humiliation complete.

England lost 2 more wickets.

They are still trailing by 10 runs with only 4 wickets in hand.

West Indies should win now.

Should win?

West Indies will win easily.

Tomorrow morning possibly.

England have barely won any series in West Indies since the 1960s.

Yeah but from 2005 to 2016, England were quite good at Test level while West Indies were incredibly poor.

I was surprised England lost the 2009 series in West Indies.

Alex Lees a rare positive from this match for England. Looked very solid in challenging conditions, both innings.

West Indies a bit of a bogey team for England, particularly on tour where even good England teams really struggle to beat them. Not quite sure why.

And there's that uneven bounce you always have to watch out for in WI Tests.

Curtly Ambrose: England in extreeeeme....problems :))

Brave resistance from Lees, but now he get a lowie, and just like that’s it’s all over for him.

The extra half hour might be available.
Could be over tonight this.

Last year Kyle Mayers scored 210 on debut to help WI to chase 395 in Bangladesh.

Today he takes a 5-fer vs England who are now technically 8-8.

9 for 8 England.

More miracles from Saqib etc needed by England if they are to have even a sniff of a chance.

This is the worse England test team I've ever seen. Can't believe how the standards have dropped so badly.

Five years ago England started concentrating on ODIs and T20s.They created an excellent T20 side but neglected test cricket.English players started playing too many T20 leagues. They need to make country cricket competitive again.

England are set for another humiliating defeat after enduring a disastrous third day of the decisive third Test against West Indies in Grenada.

Having begun with hopes of pushing for victory themselves, the tourists were thwarted by the West Indies lower order before they collapsed in abject fashion in their second innings.

They ended the day 103-8, just 10 runs ahead of West Indies with two days to go.

Joshua da Silva reached his maiden Test century in the morning session, frustrating England with a stand of 52 with number 11 Jayden Seales before West Indies were finally dismissed for 297.

That gave the hosts a first-innings lead of 93 and in response England's top order folded to 39-4 - captain Joe Root out for five and all-rounder Ben Stokes four.

Jonny Bairstow and opener Alex Lees offered some resistance with a dogged stand lasting 24.4 overs but when Bairstow was caught behind for 22, Ben Foakes followed in a calamitous run-out five balls later.

Lees made 31 before he was castled by Kyle Mayers - the seamer ending the day with remarkable figures of 5-9.

Hosts West Indies now look certain to complete victory, which would also see them take the series 1-0.

Agree, we've also got the 100 ball competition now which will no doubt continue to be a hugh favourites. So the question is where does this leave 4 day red ball cricket? Ecb has to make changes big time otherwise England will continue to struggle.

Agree with that. They even managed to draw in England a few years back.

England deserves this humiliation. They are an atrocious Test team. On par with Pakistan.

I was watching the highlights of England’s 2nd innings.England’s poor batting was the reason for the collapse not WI bowling.Agreed WI were bowling in the right areas but the batsmen were confused, didn’t know whether to attack or defend.England have always struggled in the Caribbean even when playing mediocre WI teams.

Really like the passionate commentator Mr. Curtly Ambrose unlike Ambrose the stary bowler

Joe Root needs to be taken out of his misery. Some people are just not good captains and cannot become good captains.

Marcus Trescothick interview as batting coach was interesting, not even attempting to apply any gloss — he has already explicitly conceded defeat. Lol

What a miserable and depressing ending to an otherwise ok tour for England.

Is this the start of a downhill for England in test cricket? I cannot see much talent in batting coming through. Many average international cricketers are now also getting county contracts.

This is how you take advantage of home conditions learn Rambo :ramiz

Lets not give too much credit to the WI players or board.

That England team can potentially be beaten by Zimbabwe.

Pakistan on the other hand faced a determined Australian team which was full of class players and not a single passenger.

Root was given a chance to show team improvement on this tour and its not happened. Time for him to be sacked as skipper.

Who will they replace with ? Ben Stokes, he seems to have some personal family issues going around..

Butler and Bairstow still struggling with their places..

Since the Days of Strauss and cook Eng opening conundrum exists add to it they lack a big innings player apart from Root someone like Trott then there is no world class spinner like Swann also the pacers are not much experienced
All in all identical to Pakistan their test outfit is a complete mess just one advantage that their tail can bat
How many they have tried Carberry Denly Laith Vince Haseeb Crawley it's like a lottery

Buttler was dropped.
Bairstow has scored two big hundreds since his return however, his place is guaranteed.

The start? :)
It’s been going on for a while now.

It's been all downhill for england since the 2nd test in chennai. CC is just not producing the kinda players you need to be very competitive at the international level. A well past it Alastair Cook still has the highest number of runs on recent CC seasons I believe. That is shocking.

WI 297
ENG 204 & 114/8 (57.3) CRR: 1.98
Day 4: 1st Session - England lead by 21 runs

Really shoddy umpiring in this series.

Coming up to 20 decisions overturned by DRS now.

Shockingly shockingly bad.

Woakes survives for now.

WI need 28 to win. They should open batting with Roach and seales.

England have been declining in Tests since the 2013/14 Ashes to be honest.

They are in same tier as Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka etc.
