WINDIES HEADS TO INDIA FOR A FULL TOUR

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – WINDIES Men will be in India for almost seven weeks starting September 26. They will compete against India in 2 Tests, 5 ODIs and 3 T20s.

West Indies and India have played 94 Tests against each other since 1948. West Indies has won 30, lost 28 and drawn 46 matches.

The Selection Panel has assembled a 15-man squad for the Tests. The squad reads:

Shimron Hetmyer
Shai Hope

Keemo Paul
Kieran Powell
Kemar Roach
Jomel Warrican

Chairman of Selectors, Courtney Browne says “The panel congratulates Jason Holder and his team on the excellent performance against Bangladesh. As the team embarks on a tough tour of India the successes against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh should hold them in good stead during the India series. The panel welcomes back Sunil Ambris who missed the last couple of series due to injury, along with Jomel Warrican who adds a second spin bowling option to the attack.”

The schedule for the tour:

1st Test October 4 – 8 Rajkot

Thank you, now all Rainas, Dhonis, Pandeys, Jadhavs, Kauls, Sirajs, Thakurs will fix their place in the playing 11 and 15 and, their true colors will be known at the WC.

IPL
England Tour
Asia Cup
Windies
Australia tour

With all due respect to west indies, I just hope we test our bench strength and give youngsters a chance, hopefully the top guns will be rested and youngsters like Shaw, Gill, Iyer, Mavi, Nagarkoti etc be given a chance here.

Thank you, now all Rainas, Dhonis, Pandeys, Jadhavs, Kauls, Sirajs, Thakurs will fix their place in the playing 11 and 15 and, their true colors will be known at the WC.

I don't think Raina will get into the ODI squad anymore.

And it's not a bad idea to have Iyer, Pandey & Thakur ready as back-ups for the first choice XI.

I hope they pick Jadeja and Krunal in the ODIs to test out the position of the 6th bowler. India can't go in with just 5 bowlers into the WC.

Tests - Need to blood Siraj,Vihari,Shaw,Agarwal,Pant
ODI -Shaw,Gill,Pant,Iyer.

Chill bro, if you try out these many new players you might end up losing a test and a couple of ODIs.

This windies team isn't terrible in tests, they can shock you like they did to us in the UAE, and how they shocked England last year.

You can't really take them lightly in ODIs either because they have hard hitters, and if they start firing, they don't stop easily.

It'll be a walkover for India. The West Indies have become an embarrassment to Cricket now where even the fans of opposing sides want them to do well and put up a fight.

In last 12-15 months, they have won a test each on their away tours to England and UAE, drew a series vs SL at home and won vs BD. Their pace bowling is very strong now, batting has a few problems but on their day can give any side a tough fight.

West Indies won't be doing anything in India. None of their away tour wins you are mentioning have been in India recently.

Even at cost of loosing it would be worth trying new players

Much needed stats burnishing series for our home bullies Pujara, Ashwin, Jadeja after taking hit after hit so far this year

Kohli should ideally play only one out of this ODI series or Asia cup. Can consider giving him break from Tests as well (but probably won't due to TV contracts)

Last time they won a test in India was back in 1994.India is the toughest place to tour for any country and Windies batsmen will have a hard time negotiating our spinners and reverse swing from our fast bowlers with the SG ball. Their fast bowlers are pacy but I don't think they have the skills to reverse the SG ball in India. Perfect opportunity to blood Prithvi Shaw ,Mayank Agarwal and Siraj who is in blistering form picking up wickets in the A tours.
Regarding ODIs, big hitting will only work in T20s, you need more skill in ODI.The Australia A team with Darcy Short, Travis Head,Usman Kwaja struggled to score against India A and B teams and lost in the final by 9 wickets. And Indian A batsmen scored against the likes of Stanlake, Jye Richardson and Ashton Agar who are better than anyone in the current Windies ODI team. So its the right time to blood youngsters.

Don't see West Indies winning a test but I am optimistic that they will compete in the series.

You'd take a drawn test series with windies at home? Or a series loss in ODIs at home?

India A team recently has won many matches and couple of trophies with A teams of England ,south Africa and Australia.

This west indies team is not exactly way ahead of these teams. Yes India may lose a test or odi when experimenting but that should be ok if youngsters get exposure.

Btw it's just my opinion. But if kohli, dhawan, bumrah, pandya, ashwin are rested against Wi and for Asia cup...it's just 4 or 5 new players and not exactly a completely fresh A team

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Right-arm fast bowler, Shermon Lewis will replace Alzarri Joseph in the 15-man squad for the Test Tour of India which starts Thursday, October 4 in Rajkot.

Lewis made his debut at the first-class level for the Windward Islands in March 2017 and took 30 wickets at an average of 21.66 in the 2017/18 West Indies 4Day Championship. He recently toured England as part of the WINDIES A squad where they played against India A and England Lions.

Joseph, in the last week, underwent two fitness assessment procedures and a CWI medical panel has recommended that he be “allowed to continue his rehabilitation to full fitness for international competitions.”

Joseph suffered a stress fracture last November and has since been in intense programmes to get him back to full strength. Since then, he has also played in an international home series against Bangladesh and the recently concluded Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Joseph will continue his rehabilitation programme under the monitoring of medical officials at the High-Performance Centre at Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua.

In the meantime, some members of the Test squad are already in Dubai and have begun training sessions at the ICC Academy as they continue their preparation for the Test series in India.

DUBAI, UAE – The West Indies Senior Men’s Team currently in Dubai for a 10-day preparation camp ahead of the Tour of India, started a two-day practice match against a UAE XI at the ICC Academy.

The WINDIES posted 345/5 after choosing to bat on the first day of the match, with ninety overs or a 5pm cut-off time agreed between both teams for each day. Openers Kraigg Brathwaite and Kieran Powell started cautiously in the 42-degree Celsius weather. Powell then became the aggressor of the pair, carting the inexperienced UAE bowlers around the Academy ground. Brathwaite fell in the over before lunch for 28 with the score on 69.

Powell powered on, reaching 42 before he retired. Shai Hope was joined by the in-form Shimron Hetmyer, who continued his free scoring from the CPL. He struck five-fours and four-sixes on his way to a top-score of 60 and a 95-run partnership with Hope, before being caught and bowled by Fawad.

Hope and Roston Chase continued the solid batting, the pair added a further 38 runs before Hope became Ajmal’s second victim for a well-played 51. Chase and Shane Dowrich added 40 runs before Chase also fell for 51. Dowrich made 21, Captain Jason struck five-fours and a six on his way to 38 before also retiring. Returning batsman Sunil Ambris struck a quickfire 47 before he was trapped LBW by Ajmal. Jahmar Hamilton and Keemo Paul were the not out batsmen on 2 runs respectively, when play ended at 5pm with 86 overs bowled.

Ajmal was the pick of the UAE bowlers, taking 3/44 while Fawad and Akmal had one wicket each.

At the close of play, WINDIES Head Coach Stuart Law said “It was a great hit today for our batsmen in extreme heat. All the batsmen had some valuable time in the middle and our preparation has been excellent so far. The boys are adjusting nicely to the tough conditions.”

The match continues on Monday, with the WINDIES taking the field to bowl and defend the 345/5 the batsmen posted.

Rest is a distant dream for the Indian cricket team. After the Asia Cup, India will host West Indies for two Tests, five one-day internationals and three Twenty20 Internationals that will begin on October 4 with the first Test at Rajkot.

West Indies, meanwhile, have already begun acclimatising to conditions they will receive in the sub-continent by setting base in Dubai since last week. The squad will now travel to India on September 26, which was not part of their plan.

According to a report in the Times of India, the initial plan was to travel to India at least a fortnight ago, but the BCCI denied any facilities to prepare for the tour. “We tried to get to India, but we were told that they weren’t any places available to us. It would have been nice to be in India. There would have been less travel,” West Indies coach Stuart Law was quoted as saying. “The ICC Global Academy said that they have cricket going on and thus offered us to come here. We are enjoying ourselves.”

The BCCI cited heavy domestic schedule which is why they denied West Indies training facilities. “We have so many teams this season. To accommodate them at a time when the domestic season is underway would always be difficult,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying by TOI.

WINDIES fast bowler, Kemar Roach will return home to Barbados following the death of his grandmother. Roach, part of the squad preparing for the India series, will travel home today (September 25).

He will then rejoin the team in India after the funeral. No replacement will be named for Roach.

The Board of Directors, Management and Staff of Cricket West Indies, wish to express condolences to Kemar and his family.

5 days after Asia Cup final, Ind-WI tests start from 4th October

Such a weird scheduling. Not even a week’s break between Eng tour and Asia Cup, now Tests vs WI start from 4th October.

Worst thing about the schedule is we will play 2 tests in 12 days whereas the 3ODIs and 3 T20s are spread over 21 days. Best is a 5 day gap between 2nd and 3rd T20 The bone headed jokers running BCCI can’t even get their scheduling right.

One player most impacted is Bumrah. I hope he gets adequate rest before tour to Australia in November which starts 10 days after WI series gets over.

Up to the Indian selectors to give guys like Shaw, Rahul, Pant, Siraj and Saini the full WI tour. Instead we are likely to see Rohit Sharma make a test comeback.

Poor scheduling although there might be other issues. No rest for India.

I agree that youngsters should be given an opportunity.

People who are complaining about horrible scheduling need to understand that BCCI needs to earn money too. India should have its own home season every year. Apparently this season all we will be able to see is 2 home tests while every other nation is playing at least 5-6 tests in their home season and you guys complain on that as well.

To be honest, in the modern world, scheduling cannot and should not be blamed. Players should be protected by rotating them and even trying to form different teams for each format if and when possible.

That is actually disgusting treatment by the BCCI. To INVITE an international team to tour and then refuse them practice facilities- in a country as large as India- is disgraceful treatment.

Time for Indians to boost up averages. Pakistan had good Zimbabwe tour.

360/6 by the Board President 11. Ankit Bawne with a 100, Mayank and Shreyas Iyer with a 50 each. Failures for Shaw and Vihari. I hope both keep their place in the Test squad though.

Looks like Bhuvi, Bumrah and Ishant will be rested. Siraj, Shami and Umesh o be the pacers. Go the whole hog and pick either Navdeep Saini or Ankit Rajpoot as well.

I'm hoping this is the XI for the tests.

Kohli is reported to have some sort of wrist injury so he might miss the tests.

VADODARA, Gujarat – The West Indies Senior Men’s Team officially opened their Tour of India with a two-day warm-up match against a BCCI President’s XI at the Reliance Cricket Stadium in Vadodara.

In humid conditions, the BCCI’s XI won the toss and elected to bat first in a 90-over per day contest. Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal opened the batting for the BCCI XI, while the WINDIES, Captained by Kraigg Brathwaite opened the bowling with Shannon Gabriel. Shaw was the first to go when he was caught by Shimron Hetmyer off Gabriel for 8. Hanuma Vihari was caught behind 13 runs later off Shermon Lewis with the score on 40.

Mayank Agarwal and Captain Karun Nair then combined for a 92-run partnership with Agarwal the aggressor of the pair. However, he fell ten runs short of a century when Devendra Bishoo had him caught by Hetmyer for 90. Nair though held his own, striking 5-fours on his way to 29 before Gabriel retuned to the bowling attack and had him caught by Bishoo.

Then came the mammoth 113-run partnership between Shreyas Iyer and Ankit Bawne. The pair took a particular liking to Devendra Bishoo. Between them they struck 5-sixes and 18-fours. However, Bishoo had the last laugh, as he picked up the wicket of Iyer for 61. The score now 258/5.

Bawne was joined in the middle by Smit Patel and the pair took the BCCI XI past 300 with Bawne reaching triple figures. The BCCI XI ended their 90 overs on 360/6, with Patel being the last man out for 15, caught in the deep by Shane Dowrich off Bishoo. Bawne remained on 116 not out.

The WINDIES toiled hard in the field in very humid Gujarati conditions. Devendra Bishoo finished with figures of 3/104 from 21 overs, while Shannon Gabriel had 2/41 from 8 overs and Shermon Lweis 1/13 from 10 overs.

At the close of play, Kraigg Brathwaite who captained the WINDIES SAID “I think it was a good first day for the team, first game here in India, it was quite hot but I thought the guys stuck it out quite well. The ball wasn’t spinning as much as we anticipated so getting six wickets was a good effort from us. We probably could’ve contained a bit more runs from the spinners but I think it was a decent day. We have to make sure that we stick to our plan when we chase the 360-run total tomorrow, because the wicket still looks decent for us to bat on.”

The match continues on Sunday, with the WINDIES chasing 361 from 90-overs for victory.

Is it the same procedure where after India lose an away series a minnow like team is called up to boost up the stats and maintain the ranking points?

Pakistan lost a test to the same minnow in the UAE so i don't know what should we call Pakistan.

India squad for Windies Tests: Virat Kohli (c), KL Rahul, Prithvi Shaw, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (VC), Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (wk), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur

Great to see Shaw and Mayank. Shaw and Rahul should be the openers.

No all rounder replacement for Pandya. Perhaps will play 3 spinners and 2 pacers. Will not be a bad idea to rest Rahane, who is abysmal in India and give Vihari two tests.

Can't see a reason why Shardul is still there. Is utterly useless. Was a good chabce to groom

Useless shardul picked.Kohli should have been rested. Now mayank wont get a game.

Bumrah, Bhuvi and Ishant are all rested.

While Shardul doesn't seem like a world class bowler, which other pacer could have taken that place? Siraj is already in the squad.

Shardul has been on bench for close to two years and hardly gets a chance. Shows the confidence team management have in him. And when he gets chance in ODIs, he was mediocre at best and did not look international class. I supported him earlier but the trash he bowled in Asia Cup was enough to show how bad he really is.

Was a chance to groom Navdeep Saini or Ankit Rajpoot or even Khaleel (despite his lack of FC experience)

Dada rooting for Rohit Sharma in tests!! Such a great cricket genius but how he can’t differentiate between Tests and ODIs. Difficult to see Rohit not in the Test squad for Australia.

We made the same mistake with Yuvraj then despite knowing he was not cut out for tests.

You can't "groom" a bowler in international test matches when he has only played 2 FC matches. That is not how the Indian system works. And it shouldn't. Only prodigies are fast-tracked. Even Shaw had to play 1 full domestic season before getting a call-up.

As far as Shardul is concerned, yes I have been disappointed with him too. But in his defence, red ball cricket is supposed to be the format he is best in (because he is a swing bolwer and uses reverse swing as well) and have only seen his white ball game.

Even Siraj looked like trash in his India debut but that's because he is a bad T20 bowler. He looks totally different with the cherry in hand.

So I want to reserve my judgement on Shardul Thakur untill I see him in his preferred format.

Having said that I don't see him getting a game in this series either. India will be playing 2 pacers and first choice is going to be Shami/Umesh and Siraj.

To be fair, Rohit is a much better test player than Yuvi ever was. :yuvi

I'm saying Pakistan does well when it matters. On doctored pitches on home grounds Indians do well though.

Yes, I know all your friends have told us this before. England is the only place where cricket matters.

That's why Pakistan is the actual current World Champions because the last WC was in Australia so it doesn't count. Only CT counts. :inzi

There has been only one CT ever. CT 2017. Rest are Jamodi s

Of course. Someone of such class not succeeding in Tests has been a mystery. Should have by now got 5000 test runs with 18-20 100s but not to be. Just could not tighten his defensive game well enough for succeedung in Tests. That same problem shows up on bowling friendly pitches in ODIs.

IMO too late now to make amends.

Has only played 2 FC matches in his life. Needs more time obviously.

Apart from the sauad regulars, the only potential red ball pace selections were Siraj, Shardul and Saini. They went with Shardul over Saini. That's all.

Don't think even Shaheen Afridi has played too many matches in FC. Bowlers should be picked when they are young and fast. Otherwise you will keep getting 25 year old trundlers. Also Khaleel will add a variety to this indian bowling attack. It's been a long time since we had a left arm quick bowler. There was a time when we had 4 of them.

Yes but the situation in Pakistan is very different to the one in India, at the moment. Pakistan are actually struggling with their pacers while we have 4 world class pacers in Bumrah, Ishant, Shami and Bhuvi - who are all in great form. So India doesn't have to force a bowler early into the international stage.

Khaleel didn't exactly look too fit in the Asia Cup. He is only 21, I think. He needs to spend time in the gym, get fitter and stronger, play a few domestics so he can understand his own game. India can actually afford that luxury right now so why not make the most of it?

India have named a 15-strong squad for the visit of the Windies, but several first-choice seamers have missed out through injury and rotation.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah have both been rested. Kumar missed the Test series against England through injury, but made a successful comeback in the Asia Cup. Bumrah meanwhile was one of the few players to play both against England and in the Asia Cup.

Hardik Pandya was stretchered off the field in the first of two games between India and Pakistan at the Asia Cup. A BCCI official confirmed he "has an acute lower back injury". Ishant Sharma reportedly failed a fitness test before the squad selection.

R Ashwin was an injury doubt, but passed his test. The other notable exclusion is Shikhar Dhawan, who played the last three Tests against England, but didn't make a half-century in eight Test innings in England.

It might well pave the way for 18-year-old Prithvi Shaw to make his Test debut. He is one of the rising stars of Indian cricket, having captained his country to Under 19 Cricket World Cup glory earlier this year. He has played just 14 first-class games, but averages 56.72 in his nascent career so far, with seven centuries. His style of play and precocity have led some to dub him the next Sachin

Apart from the established KL Rahul, Shaw is the only opener in the squad who toured England, having been called up for the last two games but not given a debut, perhaps making him the favourite to replace Dhawan.

Mayank Agarwal is the other option. He is more experienced than Shaw, having played 43 first-class games, and has excelled for India A in recent times, with one highlight a double century against South Africa A.

The two other members of the squad who could be in line for debuts are pacers Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur, though India may opt to play just two seamers - most likely Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav - and three spinners.

The series begins on 4 October at Rajkot.

Squad: Virat Kohli (captain), KL Rahul, Prithvi Shaw, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vice-captain), Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur

If Pakistan play Shaheen in tests right now and that too on dead pitches in Asia then he will be ruined. You need particular skills and lots of stamina to play here. No point ruining promising youngsters needlessly.

Kohli should have been rested for this tour as well and both Shaw & Agarwal should have played (one of them at No.4)

Khaleel Ahmed does not look like a test bowler to me. Anyway only 2 FC matches . Atleast one season of FC and another year of away A tours is needed to see if he can cut the mustard. Saini or Rajpoot should've been tried ahead of shardul thakur.

Saini, Rajpoot and Thakur all have similar FC numbers.

There's no way one can fairly say that that those two deserved to be picked ahead of Thakur.

In any case I think the reason Thakur is picked is because they are trying to find a substitute for Bhuvi.

Neither Rajpoot nor Saini can bat. Thakur can still bat a bit. So they are looking for a like-for-like replacement for that particular role in case Bhuvi gets injured or something.

I actually don't think any of them are that great. But I've seen shardul bowl and I think he's rubbish. Siraj is the only exceptional bowler currently that we have in domestic and im glad he's made it. As long as thakur doesn't get a game im ok with him in the squad.

Karun Nair should have also got an opportunity here but it seems selectors have different rules for different superstars.

It's true. None of them are remarkable in any way. Siraj is a special talent, though. I'm sure he'll be much higher in the pecking order than Thakur when it comes to picking the playing XI. I hope he plays both games and the 2nd pacer is rotated between Umesh and Shami for the 2 matches.

Karun Nair should have also got an opportunity here but it seems selectors have different rules for different superstars.

Yeah, Karun Nair's case is very curious. But I don't think it has anything to do with the "superstar" thing. Vihari plays for AP and he's no supertar yet he was picked over Nair.. AP is a far more low-profile team than Karnataka. It has to be something else.

Karun Nair dropped without even giving a reason and the kiddo Shaw is picked because he's a Superstar? I will reserve my opinion on Shaw until I see his performances in International matches. Karun Nair atleast has a 300 against Eng in our own turf and I don't understand reason for choosing him as a backup for Eng series and dropping him against a depleted WI team Home series. Now this poor lad has to go back to domestics and play more cricket to prove his worth. CSK quota took over our LOIs and looks like Virat & Shastri Co. has a seprate quota for Test squads.

I would have felt happy seeing Saini in place of Thakur. But Thakur and Axar are the kind of players who would warm the benches for the next decade only to play against Minnows and in dead rubbers but can't be kicked out of the team.

Karun Nair was a failure. Not sure what changed at the first place for him to be included in England touring squad

Looking forward to see how the West Indies perform. They have done well in tests under Law. Not expecting them to win the series. But they should be aiming to compete in this tour. This team has been together for a couple of years now. Aim should be trying to stay in the game for as long as possible.

You're being unfair on Axar. He has done well with the ball against top teams.

And he's just had an excellent county with both bat and ball. Clearly he has talent and skill and he is showing that. He's not the cream of the crop but he's good enough to be in and around the team.

It's true. None of them are remarkable in any way. Siraj is a special talent, though. I'm sure he'll be much higher in the pecking order than Thakur when it comes to picking the playing XI. I hope he plays both games and the 2nd pacer is rotated between Umesh and Shami for the 2 matches.

Yeah i hope so too.

Shaw is an opener ,Nair is a middle order bat
Nair has been dropped for Vihari

Shaw has proven himself on A tours and got runs where others failed so he deserves a place

Please check the recent performance by both of them in first class. Shaw has done all that was asked as a opener.

Nair is really struggling. He should have played the last England test but kholi is a 'special' captain.

Yeah, Karun Nair's case is very curious. But I don't think it has anything to do with the "superstar" thing. Vihari plays for AP and he's no supertar yet he was picked over Nair.. AP is a far more low-profile team than Karnataka. It has to be something else.

It seems you took the word superstar too seriously.

Well they all are superstars of Indian cricket. Even Axar Patel is a superstar too. :inti

It's just a matter of how they are treated differently by selectors. Rahul can be dropped after few failures, Karun Nair can be dropped even after scoring a triple hundred, guys like Pandya can get picked again and again even after average performances, sharduls and karthiks keep getting chances after chances. There is no consistency in their selections.

Time for home track bullies to pad up stats, things may get ugly for the hapless West Indians. Kohli, Ashwin will take out their anger and frustration on them LOL.

It's about finding the right person for the role.

This isn't charity. A team has a set strategy in mind and for that they pick out the kind of skillsets that would be required. That means certain individuals might miss out even though they should make the team on "merit". It's all about finding the right balance in a team sports where the sum can be greater than the parts. That's why someone like Thakur and Axar get picked. As backups for certain roles. Anyway, I don't think Axar will be picked again anytime soon now that Jadeja is back in the picture.

Nair's case is unfortunate for sure, though. He definetley should have been given more chances.

It's not about who is picked aheas of whom. It is about giving equal opportunities to every one. Some players get too many opportunities where as some players gets booted out after 2-3 failures. Manish Pandey didn't get that many opportunities after his century in Australia. I can see same thing happening with Hanuma Vihari if he fails too.

How many more years do they need to find the best role for DK 21(sorry sunil gavaskar)? :inti
