SHARJAH, UAE – As part of their preparations for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe, the West Indies men’s cricket team will play three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Sharjah next month.

The day-night matches will be played on Monday 5 June, Wednesday 7 June and Friday 9 June. Both teams will depart for Zimbabwe at the end of the series for their World Cup qualifying campaign which begins on 18 June. The all-important tournament will confirm the remaining spots for the 10-team ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, India.

General Secretary of the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB), Mubashshir Usmani said: “We are delighted to host a former World Champion side like the West Indies ahead of the qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe. In recent months, our team has produced some sensational performances in the ODI format which have helped raise UAE cricket’s profile.

“Our qualification for the tournament in Zimbabwe is a testament of our recent achievements. We want to ensure we provide the best possible preparation to our team and this series will most certainly help in achieving the goal. We look forward to welcoming the West Indian team. We want to thank Cricket West Indies for their continuous support towards cricket development in the UAE”.

Jimmy Adams, Director of Cricket for Cricket West Indies said: “This is our first ever bilateral tour against the UAE and we are pleased to have agreed this historic three-match ODI Series as it will provide a good opportunity for our players to get some preparation ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers. It will also allow those players not going to Zimbabwe to get some valuable experience at the international level in foreign conditions, which would be hugely beneficial to their growth and development. We are happy to work closely with the ECB to arrange the three matches and we see this as a partnership which can grow in the future.”

UAE vs. West Indies ODI series opener moved to 4 June

Dubai, 19 May 2023: The three-match ODI Series between UAE and the West Indies will now begin a day earlier with the two teams playing the opener on Sunday 4 June at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. The first match was originally scheduled for Monday 5 June. The West Indies Men’s team will arrive in Dubai on Thursday 1 June.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) Senior Men’s Selection Panel today announced changes to the West Indies “A” Team squad currently Bangladesh and the West Indies ODI squad to play the UAE in Sharjah.

For the ongoing “A” Team Series in Bangladesh, left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul will travel to Sylhet as cover for fellow left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the three-match series with a lower back injury.

Motie will travel to Dubai ahead of the West Indies’ three-match One-Day International (ODI) Series against the United Arab Emirates at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. He will not play but will receive treatment from the medical staff with the aim of being available for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe which start on 18 June.

Off-spinner Kevin Sinclair, who is presently in Bangladesh with the “A” Team, will replace Motie in the 15-member ODI squad for the series in Sharjah. Experienced batter Johnson Charles has also been called into the ODI squad as a replacement for Devon Thomas. Thomas has been provisionally suspended from playing cricket due to charges brought by the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit under the Anti-Corruption codes.

Lead Selector, The Most Hon. Dr Desmond Haynes said: “We were forced to make some changes to the squads, and this has presented opportunities for players to come in. Sinclair has been in good form all year and has taken that to the ‘A Team’ series in Bangladesh. Permaul and Charles are experienced players, and they will be able to quickly adapt to the conditions and fit into the environment in Sylhet and Sharjah.”

Haynes added: “Motie is a key part of our plans for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe, so we are hopeful he will make a full recovery for that tournament. The decision was taken to have him remain with the squad in Sharjah so he will be closely monitored and receive the best treatment available.”

Slow and steady UAE

UAE 90/2 (23) CRR: 3.91

I am trying to understand the reason for this series.

Were WICB offered a lot of money to visit UAE?

This is a horrible mismatch.

Is it not a longer transit for the West Indian boys on their way to World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe? :)

Makes sense to arrange three ODI's as "practice games" ahead of the qualifiers, no?

5 down now! Still think the West Indies will win this, but happy to see some fightback from the Asia XI team

WI - 304/9 (49 overs).

At one point, Windies were looking good for 350-400. UAE have done well to pull things back.

307 is not much of a target in modern day cricket. UAE should try to bat positively to chase this down. Windies are still favorites though.

UAE - 25/1 (6 overs; target: 307).

It would not surprise me one bit if WI lose the third ODI. I know what have been up to in the last 25 years.

Ali Naseer from UAE looks like a good prospect. Some very very clean hits.

2nd ODI • West Indies tour of UAE, 2023
