With two T20 World Cups in the space of 12 months and the next World Test Championship cycle about to get underway, it's understandable that the 2023 50-over World Cup may not be front of mind for cricket fans right now.
But while it may have gone under the radar, Australia's one-day World Cup campaign is already underway and will continue against West Indies this week.
With the official launch last year of the first-ever ODI Super League, all One-Day Internationals finally have what they have lacked for almost five decades – context.
The Super League will see the top 13 teams in the world play eight three-game bilateral series each over the course of three years, with the top seven teams plus hosts India to earn automatic qualification for the World Cup.
It means the bottom five teams, which will include some major Test-playing nations, will be forced into a secondary qualifier tournament in 2023 in order to guarantee their spot at the game's showpiece event.
And depending on the outcome of that qualifier tournament, it could also see one of those nations relegated into the second tier of one-day cricket and dropped completely from the next cycle of the Super League.
It all means the days of 'meaningless' ODIs are over.
With 10 Super League points on the line in every contest, including Australia's three ODIs against the Windies in Barbados this week, every single result matters, and could be the difference between qualifying for the World Cup and not.
A little less than 12 months into the Super League, it's difficult to get a grasp on who's in danger of missing automatic qualification due to the uneven schedule, which has been thrown into chaos by the pandemic.
Fourteen series have already been postponed, creating an unbalanced points table where England have played 15 times while New Zealand, Afghanistan and the Netherlands have played just three games each.
But already, some trends have emerged that should have some proud Test-playing nations worried about their hopes of qualifying automatically for the World Cup.
Top of that list is Sri Lanka, who are currently ahead of only Zimbabwe on the Super League table with just one win from 10 matches, their latest defeat a seven-wicket thrashing at the hands of a second-string Indian side on Sunday.
Home series against Zimbabwe and Afghanistan to come loom as their best chance to make up ground, while they're also scheduled to host South Africa, and face New Zealand away before the Super League cycle is over.
South Africa have also made a slow start, including their shock loss to 12th-ranked Ireland last week. That defeat and the washed-out series opener meant they picked up just 15 of a possible 30 points from their series against the Irish.
Australia beat England 2-1 and India by the same scoreline last year, meaning they will take a 4-2 record into their three-game series against the Windies (3-3) in Barbados this week.
A 3-0 sweep could see either team surge up the ladder and while a series loss by the same scoreline won't be a fatal blow to their World Cup hopes, it would increase the pressure on their remaining matches.
Australia still have home series against New Zealand (to be played this summer), South Africa (scheduled to be played in 2022) and Zimbabwe (which was postponed last winter) to come as well as away campaigns against Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The great unknown with the Super League, and what could prove to be the deciding factor, is the fate of the 14 postponed series.
With the schedule already cramped as it is, it's unclear if all teams will be able to reschedule these games.
When it became apparent that several postponed series in the recent World Test Championship would not be played in time, the points system was switched to factor in the percentage of points earned, indicating a similar system could be introduced if Super League matches are not able to be played.
Depending on how Australia fare in their upcoming campaigns, it could mean rescheduling their home series against Zimbabwe will take on added importance in the coming months.
And it means the three matches this week between Australia and the Windies, who have played 140 times in ODI cricket, are more than important than most of those that have come before them.

Alex Carey named Australian captain for opening CG Insurance ODI match against the West Indies
Alex Carey will captain Australia in tomorrow night’s CG Insurance One-Day International against the West Indies at Kensington Oval in Barbados.
Aaron Finch has been ruled out with a knee injury sustained while batting in the fifth T20 International in St Lucia last Friday. His fitness for the one-day international series will be assessed on a day to day basis.
Carey and Pat Cummins were joint vice-captains of the white ball sides for three years until the fast bowler assumed the role as a standalone last August. With Cummins not on this tour Carey was to be vice-captain of the one-day squad after Matthew Wade assumed the role in the T20 Series.
The wicket-keeper will be available for the captain’s press conference this morning at 7.30am AEST/5.30pm AST (-1): Alex Carey
Carey said: “I am deeply honoured to be able to lead the team while Aaron recovers. To captain Australia is one of the greatest privileges in sport and an honour I am extremely thankful to receive.
“Finchy is our captain and we will welcome him back with open arms when he is fully fit, so for now I hope I can fill the role to his extremely high standards.
“To lead this group against the West Indies in the West Indies is a great challenge and one I very much look forward to for as long as I have the opportunity.”
Head Coach Justin Langer said: “For a long period of time Alex has shown an extremely high level of professionalism and discipline as a fantastic leader within this group,” Langer said.
“The injury to Finchy gives Alex the opportunity of his first experience as captain. I have no doubt he will do a fantastic job with the support of the other senior players.”
Carey has captained the Adelaide Strikers, the South Australian Redbacks and Australia A in the past. Australia will name Carey’s vice-captain and its final team at the coin toss.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Cricket West Indies (CWI) Selection Panel today announced a change to the squad for the CG Insurance One-Day International Series against Australia.
Leg-spinner Hayden Walsh Jr replaced allrounder Roston Chase, who has not recovered in time from the left thigh injury picked up in the Betway Test Series against South Africa Test and will therefore not be available to participate in the series.
Walsh was named the CG Insurance Player-of-the-Series in the recent CG Insurance Twenty20 Series which West Indies won 4-1. He took 12 wickets at average of 11.66 and economy rate of 7.00 per over.
The CG Insurance ODI Series will be played at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Tuesday, July 20, Thursday, July 22 and Saturday, July 24. All three matches are scheduled as day/night encounters – first ball is 2:30pm (1:30pm Jamaica Time). There is great anticipation as this is Australia’s first tour of the West Indies since the tri-nation series back in 2016.
The series forms part of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) ODI Super League where both teams are aiming to win points to secure automatic qualification for the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup in India.

Sizzing Starc blows West Indies away
Australia has started their ODI campaign against West Indies with a bang, beating the hosts by 133 runs via the DLS method.
With Alex Carey captaining the side for the first time and three players on debut, Australia batted with resolve before turning it on with the ball.
The victory was essentially sealed inside the first eight overs of West Indies’ attempted chase of a revised target of 257 to win from 49 overs.
Mitchell Starc (5/48) and Josh Hazlewood (3/11) each picked up three wickets in their first four overs to leave the hosts on the ropes at 27/6.
Starc tasted success with the first ball of the innings when he removed Evin Lewis caught and bowled for a golden duck. He struck again in his next over, bowling Jason Mohammed (2) with a trademark yorker and made it three in as many overs when he trapped Nicholas Pooran in front for a duck.
Not to be left behind, Hazlewood got in on the act in his second over, taking a simple catch off his own bowling to dismiss Shimron Hetmyer (11). The seamer struck again in each of his next two overs, having Darren Bravo (2) caught at cover and Jason Holder (0) on the ropes as he finished his first spell with figures of 3/11 from six overs.
A 68-run stand between Kieron Pollard and Alzarri Joseph (17) rebuilt the innings but hopes of a miracle victory always looked slim.
Mitchell Marsh (1/7) brought the fighting partnership to an end in the 19th over when he bowled Joseph.
Starc’s return in the 23rd over ended whatever hopes West Indies had of a comeback, with the quick having Pollard caught in the slips for 56 before wrapping up the eighth five-wicket haul of his ODI career by blowing Akeal Hosein’s front pad away for a duck.
Adam Zampa (1/39) brought the match to a close with the dismissal of Hayden Walsh Jr (20) in the 27th over.
Earlier, Australia were held to 252/9 from their 49-overs in a rain-affected innings, with a 104-run stand between Carey (67) and Ashton Turner (49) providing the backbone of the innings.
Josh Philippe, making his debut alongside Ben McDermott (28) and Wes Agar, was the first man out for Australia, bowled for 39 as Hosein (2/50) ended a 51-run first-wicket combination.
Wickets at regular intervals from there saw the Australians reduced to 114/4 in the 26th over when Turner joined Carey in the middle.
Captaining the country for the first time, Carey rebuilt Australia’s innings with Turner, bringing up his half-century in 72 balls, accelerating as his score grew.
Having taken 72 balls to raise the fifty-run partnership, Carey and Turner only took another 35 deliveries to bring up their hundred-run stand.
Just as the duo looked set to launch, Walsh Jr worked his magic. A late addition to the ODI squad, Walsh Jr finished with figures of 5/39, taking the first of those wickets in the 45th over.
The leggie bowled Carey to open his account and four balls later drew a top edge from Turner that landed in the hands of deep square leg.
He collected another two wickets in his next over, accounting for Starc (8) and Matthew Wade (3) before wrapping up a maiden ODI five-for by dismissing Agar (9) in the final over.
The spinner went on to score 20 with the bat and the hosts will be hoping for another stellar performance from him when they take on Australia in the second ODI on Thursday.

Presumably, Cricket West Indies only received validation of the positive test at the last minute. However, I feel that the toss should have been delayed till they waited for the result.
The Australian media is reporting that the infected person isn't Australian.
Worst case now is that there are multiple cases within the West Indies team, which potentially leads to the cancellation of the first few T20 matches against Pakistan as they can't fly in replacements at short notice into Barbados due to quarantine regulations.

West Indies recovered from another new ball assault from Australia’s attack to take out the second ODI and draw level in the series.
A match that concluded two days after it was initially scheduled to begin proved aptly unpredictable, with Australia’s top score coming from their No.10.
Chasing 188 to win, West Indies were teetering at 72/5 at one stage before a 93-run stand between Nicholas Pooran (59*) and Jason Holder (52) turned the tide of the match to set up a four-wicket win.
The victory lifts West Indies to sixth on the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League standings with 40 points.
Both Pooran and Holder notched half-centuries to help West Indies tie the series 1-1 with a match to go.
The Australians were left to rue a dropped catch from Moises Henriques in the 27th over when West Indies still required more than 60 runs to win and another by Matthew Wade when they still needed 17.
Pooran was the man to enjoy both lucky breaks, first driving Adam Zampa (2/43) straight to Henriques on 26, with the usually excellent fielder spilling the simple catch. His second life came on 49 as he edged Ashton Turner (1/37) to slip where Wade could not hold on.
In his next over after the Pooran reprieve, Zampa thought he had trapped Holder in front for 43, only for the dismissal to be overturned on review as replays confirmed a thick inside edge.
The all-rounder’s innings finally came to an end on 52 when he was struck in front of the stumps by Mitchell Starc in the 35th over with West Indies needing 23 runs to win. Removing Pooran would have opened the door for Australia but the wicketkeeper-batter managed to see the hosts home from there.
Pooran and Holder came together in the 15th over following an electric start from the Aussie attack. In the first over of the chase, Starc (3/26) had Evin Lewis adjudged lbw only for the decision to be overturned on review. He did not have to wait much longer to get his man however, removing him lbw for one before bowling Darren Bravo for a golden duck with his next legal delivery.
Zampa opened his account in the ninth over, dismissing Jason Mohammed (11) with a googly before Turner took a wicket with just his second delivery in ODI cricket, bowling the well-set Shai Hope in the 14th for 38.

Australian captain Aaron Finch ruled out of the remainder of the Qantas Tour of the West Indies and Bangladesh
Australian captain Aaron Finch has been ruled out of the remainder of the Qantas Tour of the West Indies and Bangladesh due to a knee injury.
Finch will return to Australia from the West Indies to complete 14 days quarantine and is then likely to undergo surgery.
Selectors and the Cricket Australia medical team are optimistic Finch will recover in time for the ICC T20 World Cup in the UAE and Oman, which commences in mid-October.
“I’m extremely disappointed to be heading home,” Finch said. “This was considered the best course of action rather than travelling to Bangladesh, not being able to play and losing that recovery time. I will have the surgery if required and start the recovery process ahead of the World Cup.”
Finch suffered the injury during practice leading into the T20 Series against the West Indies in St Lucia, which he further aggravated in the final game of that Series.
Alex Carey will continue to captain Australia for the final CG Insurance match in Barbados. Selectors will decide on a T20 captain ahead of the five-game Series against Bangladesh in Dhaka. Matthew Wade was vice-captain in the West Indies' T20 matches.

West Indies had a sniff when Marsh was caught off a Sheldon Cottrell (1/34) bouncer in the 14th over, but the breakthrough did little to stop the visitors in their tracks.
Matthew Wade came in at No.5 and immediately went to work, slashing Cottrell for four off his second ball.
Hayden Walsh Jr (1/41) trapped Carey lbw at the start of the 21st over but that would be Australia's last wicket loss for the match.
