West Indies's poor record against Top teams in Test cricket

West Indies recently did very well to whitewash Bangladesh in Bangladesh in the Test series, but their record in Test cricket against the top sides is atrocious to say the least.

West Indies haven't beaten Australia in a Test series since 1992/93.

Haven't beaten South Africa in a Test series either since 1992.

In addition, they haven't beaten Pakistan in a Test series since 2000.

Haven't beaten India in a Test series since 2002.

Haven't beaten Sri Lanka in a Test series since 2003.

Thats a terrible series record to have against major sides. Hopefully they can improve it soon. Winning against Bangladesh away is an important step in the right direction.
 
I know Bangladesh beat WI 2-0 last time at home, but thats the only time WI have lost in Bangladesh in the last 20 years. Winning this recent series against is good for WI though, there is no doubt about it. But they seriously need to perform well in other Asian countries. WI is yet to win a test match in Sri Lanka, ever since SL started playing cricket. Haven't won a test match in India since 1994 and haven't won a test match in Pakistan since 1990/91, although they did win a test match against Pakistan in UAE in 2016. So they need to start winning matches in other Asian countries too.
 
Don't think the WI take their cricket seriously, they might fluke a series win here or there but overall there is a lack of seriousness in their Cricket.
 
Just to add, West Indies haven't ever beaten South Africa in a test series of 2 matches or more. They only won a one off test against SA in 1992.
 
I believe, West Indies have a decent chance to beat Pakistan this summer and end Pakistan's unbeaten run against them since 2000.

Despite lacking seriousness, they can surprise big teams on their day, like the did to England a couple of years ago. Just makes me wonder that if they were serious, what they could achieve.
 
If New Zealand can amp themselves up to sustained levels of success, that's where West Indies should take their inspiration from.

And Bangladesh should look at both (and Afghanistan) and hang their heads in shame.

Win or lose, cricket has a future in Bangladesh. Same cannot be said for west indies. NZ's good run will end too. It is only T20 leagues which is sustaining their cricketers.

I doubt that. Pak will atleast draw the series in WI, if not win it. Anyways it will be a good series.

Just to mention that WI were lucky to beat Pak even in 2000. Jimmy Adams won them the decider of that series with help from the umpires. Otherwise, Pak would have won that series too, meaning WI's last series win against Pak would be even further back in the year 1993, just like Australia.

NZ will remain a force, but I sincerely hope that WI can atleast be competitive against the top test teams, if not beat them in a series. Bangladesh though, really needs some drastic changes in their Test setup to improve.
 
West Indies last won an overseas series in a major country against New Zealand, way back in 1995.

All their away series wins post 1995 have been against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe and a one off test against Afghanistan in 2019. That says it all really, Sadly.
 
WI will never be the same. The islands are full of corruption and the players dont have the same passion to prove themselves as they used to. They will always give us odd moments of brilliance though.

Bangladesh may not do well in test cricket, but the passion is huge. In Bangla, we say haruk ba jituk...(means whether we lose or win, we are going to support this team).
 
Some absolutely atrocious numbers. This clearly shows West Indies decline did not start in the last few years. It has been over 20 years of decline.

The decline started in 1990 when they drew a series against an average England side at home. The extent of the downfall was somewhat tempered through the presence of Lara, Walsh, and Ambrose during the 90s.

The most concerning point for the future is that the West Indies have not produced an international class batsman since Gayle and Sarwan, both of whom debuted in 1999-2000.
 
Thing is West Indies have given up on test cricket. They really do not care

They are still producing some of the best T20 specialists & will be force to reckon in the T20 World Cup. There is little you can do when they are not at all bothered about test cricket

That is surprising. I thought they would have won in lanka atleast.

WI didn't draw with England at home in 1990, they beat England 2-1. So, they lost a test to England, yes, but won the series.

FYI, Pakistan was the only country to draw a Test series in the Caribbean from 1976-1994. Pak was the only country to not lose a series in the West Indies in that period. Pak drew in WI in 1988, ofcourse.

Just shows how much WI have struggled post 2000. They didn't play SL in the 80's when they were the dominant force in world cricket and SL were minnows, so as a result they are yet to win a test in SL.

We lost in 1977 under Mushtaq Mohammed. That was the series where Colin Croft and Joel Garner debuted.

However even that was down to patriotic umpiring in Barbados where WI were 9 down and barely clung onto a draw.

Yes, patriotic umpiring cost Pakistan a drawn rubber in WI in 1977, otherwise Pak under Mushtaq Mohammad did very well in OZ ,WI and NZ.

After SA playing in WI will be our toughest test of this year. Something about the Dukes ball always makes me nervous, our batsmen do ok there but not great. Hopefully the Zimbabwae series is a great confidence booster for some as a prep.

Bowlers to watch out for definitely Holder, Gabriel, Cornwall and Warrican. Some of our batsmen struggle against SLA spin so it will be a bit of a test for them.

WI have a very decent bowling line-up and i wouldn't be quick to write them off.
 
It's not a surprise at all. The West Indies do not care for their cricket anymore. Youngsters generally prefer to play American sports now, while anyone who does get good is either getting swallowed up by the incompetence of the administration or is looking elsewhere like Joffra Archer.

They are still producing very talented cricketers who, if managed correctly, would have achieved a lot more for their country. But the only thing that interests a good Windies cricketer now is independently making t20 money, because they cannot rely on their board to provide for them if they went the test cricket route instead.

Memory lapse, I got confused with the following year when England were playing at home. That series was drawn 2-2.

Yup, against India they have been very poor. Not being able to win a test in 23 matches is shameful to be honest.

Yeah won't be an easy series for Pak, but Pak should at the very least not lose the series.

You do all this stats research but 1 stat you need to know about West Indies. They have only lost 1 test in Barbados against Asian teams and that was in 2018 against Sri Lanka.

With covid restrictions, West Indies could have all the tests at Barbados against Pakistan and that could put Pakistan at a disadvantage. Since you put so much into these previous fixtures,Pakistan will have 0 chance of winning the series in the unfortunate events that all the tests are played at Barbados lol.

Bring it on in Barbados then. I guess its a much better wicket compared to the one where the current SL-WI test match is being played on. I want an exciting series not a dull boring one.
