What's new

What’s with desi people’s obsession of attending the Wimbledon?

Sachin might have kickstarted it when pics and videos of him with Federer went viral.

But wasn't aware of the scale now. I also find it embarrassing when Indians talk about the prestige of playing at Lord's. Bumrah kind of went against it yesterday when he pretty much refused to raise the ball after getting his 5fer. But he backtracked a bit during his presscon saying he was just tired lol

Lord's is an iconic ground. It is indeed prestigious. It has so much history. :inti

Never in my life have I seen this many Indians attending the Wimbledon.

The whole Indian team including those who aren’t even part of the cricket tour are attending it with their wives.

The social media influencers, models, Bollywood people are there.

Are they even big time Tennis fans?

Or is it just the latest cringe trend by rich Indians to show off on their social media?

I heard somewhere actual Wimbledon club members are trading their passes for huge profits to all these obsessed show off people.

The Wimbledon itself obviously benefits from all these social media influencers attending the event making it a trend and bring all the PR.
Are you kidding? What kind of thread is that? Even if watch Wimbledon despite not being a tennis fan?

Infact yesterday was an emotion, I knew djocovich(sorry for the wrong spelling am in cinema) time was up and it was a pain to watch him lose but his time as a tennis player is coming to an end.

Theirs a new no 1 and aint gonna be a 38 year old past his peak.

I was invited to attend Wimbledon Final tomorrow by a colleague but declined as there may be too many Indians in attendance.

I didn't mention my reason for declining as they ( white English) may not understand it so I pretended that it is difficult to travel.

Just to show off. Like if you are going to a sporting event wearing a formal suit, it is obvious that you are there for media pics etc.

Do you think we could ever see Babar Azam attending Wimbledon?
The preference would be Wasim Biryani , if the wc in India was anything to go by and wouldn’t be an issue if he wasn’t an athlete.

You aren’t desi enough, a desi would never refuse free seats to such an event.
I have no love for American football but i never say to free Box tickets for a season game due to the food spread.

Who cares about someone attending Wimbledon or not... Good for him if he does, not like he is gonna die if he fails to do so.

Royal family's association with the event brings prestige to the invitations, whether we like it or not. I am fine as long as invitees don't now down to them like players.

What's more pathetic is the greats being made to do this in the name of politeness.

Are you sure she's indian?

General complexion of Indians is similar to black people.

Let’s be respectful and sensitive first of all while talking skin colour.

India is a diverse nation and you will find all shades of the colour across the country.

Wimbledon is a status symbol. If you are in attendance you are probably a big shot. It does attract a lot of the rich and the influential.

Not just Indians but you will see a lot of Arab royalty as well, and they are often mistaken for desis because they have to forego their traditional attire.

Cheapest Wimbledon tickets were being traded for USD 20k.

Sporting event ❌
Elitist branding event ✅

I have always wanted to go to wimbledon. I live very close to the area, but sadly it is too expensive for me.

Many are targeting to increase their social media follower count. Apart from that maybe a status symbol for few. Very few of them have any love for tennis.

Tennis is a relatively easy sport to follow. I'd imagine for a casual sports viewer it's the best sport to watch in a stadium. There is constantly something going on.

The worst part is that it’s only going to get bad. I’m sorry y’all this is just the beginning. This is probably the 1st year Wimbledon went viral on Indian social media.

Now watch out for the sheeple to flock to Wimbledon the next few years.

Alrai heard they sold 500 million USD worth tickets for the next few years

I always felt tennis was a game which desis should be good at, but seems like they prefer buying seats for selfies than doing the hard work of actually playing the game.

We were getting there.
Amritraj brothers were great back in the day. Then Leander Pace and Mahesh Bhupatti became poster boys for Tennis in India. Sania Mirza helped take it to another level and during the same time Aisam Quereshi started making a mark. Bopanna was a decent player too.

But overall, Europe is just way ahead.
A small country in Europe must be having more Tennis courts than entire India.

Sports have to be part of life. Or you would have to take it as a national obsession as in China. No in between.
