I've watched the series here and there but never truly committed to it but I need to since am excited to see the new movie which is going to be released.

Cheers for the suggestions :narine

Robert were you a fan of Star Wars?

dashing_man you should be more excited for the new Star Wars movie then Warcraft even with Ragnor in it :).

The series is incredible and even the original stands the test of time imo

I have never watched Star Wars in my life, hate me for this :(

lol serious not even the phantom menace? that came out around about the time I was little and my fam took me to watch it in the cinema. I really enjoyed the movie as a Kid but it wasn't well received by critics, I'll have to watch it again to see why.

Wow, I just checked; the phantom menace took around $1billion at the Box Office! Good Lord!

nope, not even that. Maybe cuz no one around me weren't into that. They were more into Titanic, Scream, Species, McGyver

I remember queueing round the block at the local Odeon to get into A New Hope, or Star Wars as we called it then. Nobody had seen anything like it.

Dreadfully disappointed by the prequels. I hope the Abrams movie will be better.

The best way to watch it is to go to the cinema and find a better film to watch. Star Wars is massively overrated, it might have been spectacular at the time, now it just looks dated.

Having watched the 1st one recently it's not hard to see why and tbh very few movies in the space opera genre have managed to better a new hope in terms of the action and adventure.

:)) Did you not like the first 3 movies as well? given that the prequels were not well received. Also, which movies would you say are better then star wars in the space opera genre

Star Wars goes 4,5,6 ..... and no further.

lol pretty much what most people would say, although I have a soft spot for the phantom menace since it was released when I was a little kid and really enjoyed it in the cinema. Were the prequels really that bad? I've not seen part 2 and yet.

Alien and the sequel were great. I really like the new Star Trek films as well, and I suppose that is what a reboot can do for film if it's done right. Maybe the new Star Wars will do the same for that brand. but the previous ones were lame in my view.

Showing my wife right now,so will tell you the order.

Episode 4,5,6 first and then episode 1,2,3.Please be careful on the terms i use episodes as episodes 4,5,6 came first and then prequel triology of 1,2,3.

She seems not to have an issue with order and also considering graphics of ep 4,5,6 are of 70s,80's it will be easy on the eye considering some corny acting as well.

I think the star wars fan boys go crazy on bringing hate to the prequel triology but imo its great as well since i was a kid when i saw it and liked it.
Ep2,3 are actually better than ep4.

Cheers for the post mate, although have you ever heard of something called the machete order? it seems to be a popular order which people use to watch the series:

http://moviepilot.com/posts/3388680?lt_source=external,manual,manual

1st: Episode IV
2nd: Episode V
3rd: Episode II
4th: Episode III
5th: Episode VI

I've seen a new hope now am watching the empire strikes back.

And same I don't think phantom menace deserves as much hate it receives it was a little wacky but still great in the confines of the star wars universe.

Yep they were very well received; unfortunate that I never managed to catch the Star Trek in the Cinema. Yeah hopefully it will be good. I think main reason I love a new hope is due to the Star Wars Universe and the action in Space; it also helps that the narrative was pretty decent to.

Also JaDed why didn't they get George Lucas back for the reboot? will the new guy do a good job?

As someone said for me just 4,5 and 6.

I did watch the Phantom Menace in 1999 when it was released as the hype was unbelievable but it was a very dissapointing product, that's what most felt. I know the Star Wars fanatics didn't see the flaws (special effects were very good though) but after that I didn't bother watching the rest of the prequels.

Watch them in chronological order - EP 1,2,3,4,5,6.

Huge Star Wars fan. But I always recommend watching them in chronological order for people who havent seen any. You will enjoy the story a lot more.

Lucas didn't direct ep5,6 either also i think most people think he messed up the prequel triology could be one of the reasons. Also it seems he hand picked Abrams to direct the 7th episode and Lucas son's words were that "his father wants to let it go and become its new generation".

Considering how Abrams revitalized Star trek inspite of not being a big fan of it i hope he succeeds with Star Wars which he loves.
Kasdan who was also a writer for ep5,6 has worked on this so tbh i'm pretty excited.

Yes its a famous order and makes more sense considering clone wars are mentioned in ep4,5 but not ep1 i mean still. Also a lot of people might not be able to make head and tail of it but as a story it would make a lot of sense.

Then the surprise of ep5 is wiped off coz you have already watched ep3.

I didn't realise Abrams was taking charge of the reboot. If he is then it will probably be the best Star Wars ever. I'm not a fan of Lucas' work but that's just me. Abram's Star Trek though was outstanding. Well worth seeing on the big screen.

That's great news, very excited! Will need to watch the movie in the IMAX format :)) wonder if they used any cameras to support the IMAX format, perhaps for certain scenes they did.

I've never been a fan of the old Star Trek, what was the premise of that series? it seems to have a huge fan following. Is it similar to Star Wars?

The original Star Trek movies were made when most of the actors from the tv series were too old and they looked tired as a result. The tv series itself started in the 60's I think so it's always going to look a bit silly today. I read an interview from the maker of the series and he reckoned it was ground breaking at the time as the cast was multinational. Thinking about it he was right. It must have been way ahead of it's time.

Imagine a 1960s Cold War fought in space between the United Federation of Planets (NATO), the Klingon Empire (USSR) and the Romulans (China). USS Enterprise is a Federation battlecruiser which explores and polices the outer parts of the Federation, running into new alien races and sometimes having to fight them.

The original series was wonderfully original and contained a lot of social commentary about racism in the USA of the day. The crew of the Enterprise was multi-racial, showing how we will overcome these petty differences in the future.

What really made it stand out was the quality of writing of character - particularly the byplay between the three principals Kirk, Spock and McCoy.

Its a double edged sword he wasn't a fan of the series(Star Trek) so he could give his own treatment a fresh one with new actors and energy. He seems like a fanboy of Star wars which imo is dangerous considering fanboys usually mess things up.Anyhow fingers crossed :P

Wow, it was truly ahead of its time and Most of my older extended fam were huge fans; I wonder if I'd enjoy watching the TV series in this day and age. The narrative is very appealing but what was the action like? do we get to see exciting dog fights between weird looking spacecraft/space-stations :)) I love that sought of thing

Is the new one a reboot, or a continuation of the story from ep 6?

Technically reboot would mean using the old storyline as a framework

Look if you are going to watch the new STAR WARS series coming out, it would not make any sense to watch the original ones first.

Watch them in chronological order, that would be the best way. Because the first movie of the new series comes after the events of Episode 6, Return of the Jedi.

Also should be watched at 11 pm in the morning, on a beautiful cloudless rainy day while eating fatty tissue melting popcorn.

There is a reissue of the original series with CGI, instead of the models on sticks they used in the 'sixties.

I only watched III but I heard it goes in slightly reverse order.

Episodes 4, 5 and came out first. in the late 70s through early 80s.

Episodes 1, 2 and 3 came out in 99 and 2000s.

However chronologically speaking, the events of 1,2 and 3 occurred before those of 4, 5 and 6, hence hte numbering of the movies. So I would still recommend watching the prequels first which is 1, 2 and 3 and then going on to 4, 5 and 6.

The events portrayed in the new movie supposedly happen 20 or so years after episode 6 so it makes sense to watch the movies that way in case you plan on watching Episode 7.

I think most people who haven't watched the films know that infamous quote :p

The drama is still there, as you already know the relationship between the 2 characters when the confrontation happens. I think for people who didn't watch the films when the original trilogy first came out, it makes more of an impact if you watch it from the pov of Anakin rather than Luke. My mother became a fan of the films recently, mostly because she saw the entire series as a saga of Anakin's life.

Oh okay.

4, 5, 3 and 6.. skip 1 and 2

Very true. But I think one totally unfamiliar with the characters would probably struggle to grasp and understand the stuff without watching 1 and 2, no matter how cheesy and corny they are.

Be warned, the dialogue in the first two movies is absolutely horrendous, acting not much better. Its all about special effects in the first three movies.

Star Wars star Harrison Ford has paid an emotional tribute to Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew, who has died aged 74, saying: "I loved him."

Ford, who played Han Solo, praised the "kind and gentle man" for his "great dignity and noble character".

Mayhew died at his home in Texas on 30 April with his family by his side, a statement said.

The British-US actor played the giant Wookiee warrior in several Star Wars films from 1977 until 2015.

"He put his heart and soul into the role of Chewbacca and it showed in every frame," his family said.

London-born Mayhew played Chewbacca in the original Star Wars trilogy, episode three of the prequels, and shared the role in 2015's The Force Awakens.

Ford and Mayhew's characters were close friends and piloted the Millennium Falcon. "We were partners in film and friends in life for over 30 years and I loved him," said Ford.

"He invested his soul in the character and brought great pleasure to the Star Wars audience."

Media captionStar Wars' Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew dies
Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker, described Mayhew as "the gentlest of giants".

Hamill said: "What was so remarkable about him was his spirit and his kindness and his gentleness was so close to what a Wookiee is.

"He just radiated happiness and warmth. He was always up for a laugh and we just hit it off immediately and stayed friends for over 40 years."

Star Wars creator George Lucas had wanted a tall actor to play Chewbacca and initially considered 6ft 6in (1.98m) David Prowse for the role.

However, Prowse wanted to play Darth Vader, so Lucas then turned to Mayhew, who at 7ft 2in (2.18m) was chosen purely for his height. His face was never seen.

"He fought his way back from being wheelchair-bound to stand tall and portray Chewbacca once more in Star Wars: The Force Awakens," his family said.

Mayhew also consulted on The Last Jedi, released in 2017, in an attempt to pass on the secrets of the role to his successor, Finland's Joonas Suotamo.

Mayhew's family said "the Star Wars family meant so much more to him than a role in a film".

Lucas said: "Peter was a wonderful man. He was the closest any human being could be to a Wookiee: big heart, gentle nature - and I learned to always let him win. He was a good friend, and I'm saddened by his passing."

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy added: "Peter's iconic portrayal of the loyal, lovable Chewbacca has been absolutely integral to the character's success, and to the Star Wars saga itself.

"When I first met Peter during The Force Awakens, I was immediately impressed by his kind and gentle nature.

"Peter was brilliantly able to express his personality through his skilful use of gesture, posture, and eyes. We all love Chewie, and have Peter to thank for that enduring memory."

Suotamo played Chewbacca's body double in Force Awakens and went on to play the Wookiee in 2017's The Last Jedi and 2018's A Star Wars Story.

He added to the warm tributes, saying Mayhew was "an absolutely one-of-a-kind gentleman and a legend of unrivalled class".

Robert Iger, head of The Walt Disney Company, tweeted that the "beloved" star was "a gentle giant playing a gentle giant".

The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams and The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson added their voices.

In a handwritten note posted on Twitter, Abrams said: "Peter was the loveliest man... kind and patient, supportive and encouraging. A sweetheart to work with and already deeply missed."

The family's statement also said the actor had been "heavily involved" with non-profit organisations and had launched his own foundation, which they said supported "everything from individuals and families in crisis situations to food and supplies for children of Venezuela".

They did not reveal the cause of death. A memorial service for friends and family will be held on 29 June, while a separate memorial for fans will take place in December, the statement said.

The actor is survived by his wife Angie and three children.

I'd have followed your order but had already finished watching 4 and 5 :)) now am watching 1 and then after that I'll be watching 2,3 and then 6 which is return of the jedi I think.

By the way you also need to watch the clone wars tv series which will make the prequels even better..I love phantom menace and revenge of the sith as they grew on me even more after I watched the clone wars tv series which is one of the best star wars ever done...the new sequel trilogy is pathetic compared to the original six movies..even though i dont like attack of the clones..i re watched it recently and some of the sequences are a billion times better than anything in the new movies..although the whole movie isnt my favourite..

i would suggest you watch rogue one before you watch a new hope...

i would watch in this order:
phantom menace
clone wars tv series
Revenge of the sith
rogue one
new hope
empire strikes back
return of the jedi
force awakens
last jedi

then to fill in any gaps watch attack of the clones..if you cant be asked to watch the clone wars tv series.

If anyone still needs help on this, I would recommend watching the films in chronological order to get a full grip on the saga.

Episode I - The Phantom Menace

Episode II - Attack of the Clones

Episode III - Revenge of the Sith

Solo

Rogue One

Episode IV - A New Hope

Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back

Episode VI - Return of the Jedi

Episode VII - The Force Awakens

Episode VIII - The Last Jedi

Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (will be released in December)

In my opinion, anyone who is new to Star Wars should follow the stated order - they will learn to appreciate the story more. Episode I and II are quite underrated. If you watch them before Episodes IV, V and VI (the original trilogy), you will appreciate them from a different perspective than someone who watched the original trilogy first.

I grew up with Star Wars - I have watched all the films multiple times, I have read fan-fiction and I have also watched The Clone Wars, a brilliant animated series. I don't agree that it is overrated by any measure, however, the quality has dipped over the last few years ever since Disney bought Lucasfilm.

They have unnecessarily pandered to the feminist movement. Star Wars has never been short of strong female characters and there was no need for them to overcompensate.
