What is the exact definition of ATG and who all from the modern era are considered as "ATGs"?

Hello and a very warm welcome to everyone in Pakpassion.

I am a new user in this forum and have been following the forum from last 2 years.

In the process, I have come through a lot of discussion associated with the term ATGs in this forum and there has been lots of varying arguments related to it.

I would like to know the exact meaning of this term and who all do you think from the modern era falls into this category? And also as to why posters debate so much on it when there is no one in the outside world who are aware of this term?

ATG is a term used widely for certain players who belong to the stature of attaining legendary status across the cricketing globe.

From modern era:

Batsmen:

SRT
Lara
Ponting
Dravid
Kallis
Sanga

Bowlers:

McGrath
Warne
Steyn
Donald
Pollock
Wasim
Waqar
Ambrose
Murali

Among current generation players, the likes of ABDV, Amla, Kohli, Smith, Root and Williamson with the bat can make a strong case while the same holds for the likes of Starc, Rabada,Hazlewood and Boult.
