There are many movies that I have heard a great deal about from various people, family, colleagues etc. but never got a chance to watch myself.

Here are some of the movies that I believe are universally highly rated by critics and other movie-goers that I have not seen myself.

1) Mulholland Drive (2000)
This has to be one of the most underrated movies as I had never heard of it nor ever saw it mentioned on TV, internet etc. until someone recently told me about it. It is a psychological thriller that is considered to be David Lynch's greatest ever movie and one of the best movies made in the 21st century. Recently it was voted by BBC as the greatest movie of the 21st century - highly acclaimed by critics.

2) Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Never saw it but apparently it is highly rated as one of the greatest fantasy fiction movies ever made. People who saw it say it is head and shoulders above Harry Potter

3) Social Network (2010)
Heard a lot about this movie but never got the chance to see it. Critics called it the best movie of 2010 and it is reported to have influenced many young professionals and college students into launching their own startup business

4) Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
This movie is based on the real life mission to capture/eliminate Bin Laden known as Operation Neptune Spear. Apparently - the Pakistani government declined the producers to film in Pakistan due to it being a sensitive issue so the Pakistan scenes were actually flimed in India lol Critics rate it as one of the best movies of 2012 and some say it was even better than The Dark Knight Rises

5) Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
This movie had an ensemble cast and an interesting storyline set in the past and so did not garner much attention before it was released but critics and movie-goers who saw it considered it to be one of the best movies of 2014 and the best movie that Wes Anderson had directed. It is kind of a cult classic but a must watch

So have you seen any of these movies and are they as great as they claim to be?

Make your own list and to keep in short - only mention movies that are released after 2000

The best film I enjoyed the most is Swades. It has loopholes in the screenplay but I simply loved the story and every character in the film. Whenever I watch this, it brings a smile to my face.

If you talk quality wise being the be best for me then it's

1)City of God
2)Spirited Away
3)Road to perdition
4)The Pianist
5)Gladiator.

Swades is so simple with subtle humor yet so effective.story of self discovery and true patriotism that will be still relevant for lots of years to come.

I found Mulholland Drive borderline unwatchable. I had no clue what was going on.

Best film I never saw.... Battleship Potemkin.

yea I've been supporting, encouraging and consulting many youngsters to pursue higher education in my village after watching this film. We should do our bit to help others.

My absolute all time favorite movie; Blood Diamond.

What a roller coaster. If Leonardo Di Caprio ever deserved an Oscar, it was for this movie. Can't say much about the direction, the setting, the camerawork/editing or even the storyline but this movie was the epitome of acting.

I loved the theme as well, Archer breathing his last in the mountains of Rhodesia. Can watch it a hundred times and still never get tired.

Read the thread title carefully :))

Dark Knight trilogy and most marvel movies, I've only watched a few parts of every movie never in entirety.

Never really could get into Lynch or Kubrick for some reason even though I gave their movies quite a few tries.

David Lynch is arguably the greatest director of our times.

Probably, but he is more of an acquired taste and most people join his cult following so as to not appear inferior or being able to "grasp" his movies. I personally have seen Mullholand Dr, Blue Velvet, Eraserhead but could never really could get into them nor did I understand all the hype. The Elephant Man was a masterpiece though.

Blue Velvet is a classic. Also I dont know if you have seen Lost highway? Awesome movie.

It is impossible to nail down the greatest movie to just 1 movie. Great movies also depend on mood.

Jaws.
Fatal Attraction.
Indiana Jones and the last crusade.
Terminator 2.

All the harry potter movies except for the first one and the last one. Tbh I felt the movies in between these two are all overrated and I just cannot sit through watching a 3 hour boring movie.

I thought it was boring too.

Godfather Part Two even worse.

If anything Godfather 3 was the worse. However, movies are subjective and I shall not hold you to account regarding this blasphemy.

BOOKS . He dismissed the books citing Rowling's prose as bland. I don't think I ever felt so hurt before that.

The books were a masterpiece in their own right. He's probably suffering from Old Man syndrome.

....oh crap. OK then, I've never seen The Godfather. I started it. Found it extremely boring. Stopped.

Godfather boring lol. Mods close this thread please.

Read the OP folks - Godfather was definitely NOT released after the year 2000 lol

The Harry Potter movie franchise was decent and mildly entertaining but I would definitely not say it was one of the best movies of the 21st century.

Why do you say that?

Can you name specific movies by David Lynch that you have NOT seen but are considered one of the best? (read the OP)

Oh really? Heard good things about Mulholland Drive so interesting to hear anothing perspective.

Wasn't Battleship Potemkin a Soviet movie from the 1920's lol? Or am I confusing it with something else? :13:

Forget the OP. This beizatti of The Godfather cannot go unnoticed. Just be happy that this thread is somewhat on track and hasn't turned into an Pak vs Ind slug fest. Yet.

Definitely confusing it with something else, it was about how Radha met Raj and how the father disagreed to their relationship.

That's coz this thread has remained free of Bollywood rubbish so far. We're talking off movies here after all.

Have no interest whatsoever in watching any of the Pirates of the Caribbean films, despite the popularity and acclaim. They keep making them and I keep ignoring them.

How do you know if it's a great move if you havent seen it? :zoni

It's about personal taste, I often switch off films after 30 mins if they look rubbish. I've heard Spartacus from the 60's is a great film so will have to watch it but I might not like it.

Cast away
Minority report
The aviator
the Heart locker
Batman begins
Memento

Well THAT is an understatement :))

Honestly I have seen almost his every Famous work. It's just his unconventional style of filmmaking and the thrill you feel watching them.

Crème de la crème since 2000:

Matrix (yep I know it's from '99 but it is a great movie)
LOTR (the greatest trilogy of all times)
Avatar
District 9
Gone girl gone (very underrated movie)
A Separation
infernal Affairs (the Korean version)
Old Boy
Amores Perros

-----

The greatest I saw? Lord of the Rings

Don Bradman and Gary Sobers, yes. Sydney Barnes, no.

Really? I'm not talking about the YouTube clips. Unless You are like 90 years old or something. My point is majority of people haven't seen these cricketers play and yet they are unanimously held as one of the greatest cricketers of all times.

Their records speak for themselves. This comparison doesn't make sense. Even if someone hasn't watched them play, after looking at their records, one can still pass a verdict, unlike movies.

I have watched bits and pieces of the LOTR trilogy when younger and whenever it's on TV, also have read bita and bobs from the books so have an idea of narrative however as I have grown older have never sat down and watched them in their entirety. The movies are critically acclaimed to so I would put all the lord of the rings movies as the greatest I am yet to see, I also have held back on watching them at times; felt like I didn't deserve it :mv I thought if I can achieve various academic goals then maybe it can be my treat and I have now earned the right to see LOTR :mv will be watching them soon inshaAllah azza wajull :yk

Watch extended versions, it is solid 10+ hours of epic fantasy adventure.

There are several critics out there for that job. Read the reviews from some really good ones and if there's a consensus the movie is definitely good.

I don't look at that way

After watching the film it evokes certain emotion or reaction, if its upto director expectation then the film is good. Everyone has different taste. I didn't like Boyhood or 3 billboards despite being critically acclaimed.

I was replying to the poster who claimed there's no way of knowing if a film is great without watching it. One can always read reviews and decide on it's basis. For instance many here haven't watched Godfather but I'm pretty sure everyone would agree that it's one of the greatest films ever made. That was the point.

Memento - started watching few minutes in, just couldn't continue watching. I've done this a couple of times now. Just can't get into the movie. Heard it's a must watch movie but not for me.

Amazing movie, the best psychological thriller I have ever seen

Overall:

2001 A space Odyssey
Lawrence of Arabia
Citizen Cane
On the waterfront
Barry Lyndon
Blue Velvet
Do the right thing
Thin red line
Dead poets society
MASH
Eraserhead

After 2000:

Donnie Darko
Der Untergag
The pursuit of happyness
Letters from Iwo Jima
The Hurt Locker
Hotel Rwanda
Arrival
Three billboards outside Missouri

I have watched Donnie Darko completely at least three times now and still couldn't figured out what the hell was going on during the entire time.

Given you are a fan of Lynch movies I knew you would have watched this, however there are many explanations floating around and even though I have discussed it in the imdb forums before (ad nauseum), I think this post rightly explains how I "personally" think it all went down .

P.S - Spoiler alert.

You can look at the "records" of movies i.e. awards won, critics ratings, top 100 lists etc.

Yes they are very subjective but if many people do praise a movie - it is likely to be good.

Never saw it but I saw its indian "remake" Ghajini - which itself was a fantastic movie.
Ghajini and memento are totally different movies.ghajini is a remake of tamil movie with same title and director.basically the director lifted idea of short term memory loss person and fabricated the story of vengeance of his wife's murder.

Gajni is a good movie from Indian standards, no doubt but it is not a remake of Memento per se. In fact it kills the original story of Memento and replaces it with a rather simplified version, which can be comprehended by Bollywood audience. The only similarity between both the movies is the central idea; rest everything is different.

P.P.S - Have you seen Primer?

Sometime ago I had made a list of movies that I wanted to watch. Primer was also one of them. From my memory, I can list some of such movies here.

Donnie Darko
Memento
Lost Highway
Primer
Eraserhead
Shutter Island
Mullholand Drive
Open Your Eyes / Vanilla Sky
Pi
Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind
Adaptation
Synechdoche Newyork
Oldboy
Fight Club

Still half of them are in my to be watched list.

Citizen Kane. The supposed GOAT but it has been sat on my DVD shelf for six months now, after years of toying with the idea of watching it. Maybe I never will!

Arguably the first modern film. Brilliant cinematography with effects used for the first time.

Fellowship is super, Towers a bit flat, and Return perhaps the best of the lot.

Godfather
12 angry men
Citizen Kane
Schindlers list
All of Daniel Day Lewis movies
Mulholland Drive
Most of Stanley Kubriks work except 2001 a space odyssey
Pulp fiction
Iron man
etc. etc.

Barely seen any movies that are critically acclaimed or win at Oscars and only recently seen Star Wars which was mostly disappointing too.

I guess cinema and culture isn't for me

What? :))

That's like listing

Bradman
Viv
Lara
Tendulkar
Kohli
Inzi
Anwar

and then Chris Martin or Rohit Sharma.

I have not seen Moonlight or La la land, last years Oscar winner and closest contender. I have not seen Lolita by Kubrick nor The great dictator by Chaplin. Got it from the library and sat on it forever and eventually returned it when I couldn't renew it anymore. Same happened with Tokyo story.

Still a lot left to watch if life permits.
