The shawshank redemption
the persuit of happyness
Seven pounds
3 Ediots
Rockstar

The Right Stuff - dir. Phillip Kaufman, 1983

Featured several Hollywood actors who went on to have great careers such as Eh Harris, Dennis Quaid and Jeff Goldblum. Won eight Oscars, including Best Picture.

It's a study of the early NASA programme, examining the heroism of the test pilots and the development of the huge PR machine that followed them. It's particularly interesting on the role of TV in the USA of the fifties and early sixties.

Godfather 2

I can never ever tire of it. Amazing replay value.

I never understood the hype surrounding 3 idiots. Really good movie, but no a masterpiece like its claimed to be and didn't hit me much emotionally either. Quite a decent, one time watch. Nothing more.

I am not much of a movie person but I've seen plenty so can't really pick one.

Shutter Island
The Departed
The Land Before Time 1
Django Unchained
Million Dollar Baby
Last but not least Gran Torino

I would rate Taare Zameen Par higher than 3 idiots just for the better concept and execution of the subject.

I dont have any personal favorites but can always watch following movies based on different genres

Action: Terminator 2 / Godfather 1 and 2
War: Braveheart/ Saving Private Ryan
Adventure: LOTR series
Horror: Aliens
Drama: 7 pounds / Cast Away
Dance: Save the last dance
Comedy: American Wedding/ Euro trip
Animation: Finding Nemo / Kungfu Panda 2

Saw some of that when I was 6. Scarred for life :6:

I've always been interested in the story of it though. Maybe its time I faced my fears....

I say go for it!

They dont make such movies anymore.

I very strongly believe the advancement of modern day CGI has actually lowered the overall quality of movies nowadays.
80s and 90s movies were much better made with strong storylines and substance

Fargo (1996)

Beautifully acted, a tight script & black humour. Just perfect.

Friday is the greatest comedy ever made.
Followed closely by This is the End, Pineapple Express, Bad Santa and Anchorman.

What your favorite film?

Quite a few fans of 'Titanic' (1997) here (@Daniyal99, Kianig89, Mr Consistent). Easily, my most favourite film of all the very few Hollywood films that I have watched.

I composed a 'tributical' review of it, a summary, a year ago and somehow could never get myself to post it anywhere on the Internet. Maybe I should, finally. Should I?

3 idiots was just over simplification of engineering colleges and way over the top. It was an average movie IMO.

It's a shame they went ahead with the last film. Bourne Legacy. Didn't have the same magic as previous films but still good thriller. They're making another Bourne film with Jeremy Renner

Universal confirmed at a media conference in Los Angeles, California, that they have plans to release more Bourne films, despite Legacy being given mixed reviews by critics.[7] In a December 2012 interview, Matt Damon has revealed that he and Paul Greengrass are interested in returning for the next film as Jason Bourne and the director respectively.[8] On November 8, 2013 Deadline reported that the fifth installment in the franchise will feature Renner's Cross, with Justin Lin directing. [9] Andrew Baldwin was attached for the film's screenplay writing, and the release date was set to August 2015.

David Yates ruined the harry potter series. They used to be so better earlier . My personal favorite is 3rd one

Agree on prisoner of azkaban , easily the best HP film

The rest aren't bad, but DHp2 especially didn't live up to expectations

To be honest, I thought Order of the Phoenix and Deathly Hallows Part 2 are the best films. My personal fav is the last film. From beginning to end, scenes and acting are brilliant. Music was fresh. Different from the previous films which made it more vibrant. The last film was more a work of art than just an ending to a franchise.

Romance: Casablanca - Hate the genre but Ingrid Bergman was the most beautiful, classy woman to have ever lived :22: .

Batman trilogy, LOTR, The Exorcist, Bicycle Thieves, Children of Heaven etc.

Indian - any 80's, early 90's malayalam movie.

Once Upon a Time in America
The Big Lebowski
Scarface
Heat
Groundhog Day

Personally my favorites movie are:

1. Dr Strangelove (funnily the full movie name is Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb)

Black comedy at its finest.

2. Pulp Fiction

3. Lagaan (melodramatic as hell but I LOOOOOVE it)

4. No Smoking (Anurag Kashyap)

5. Vertigo/39 Steps (I think 39 steps wins it for me)

12 Angry Men is just brilliant but not my favourite.

Did you watch Gravity ? How is it ?

Gosh now that I think about, its impossible to make a list.

Big Lebowski, No Country For Old Men and so many others come to mind.

Did you watch Gravity ? How is it ?

Yep I watched it. In 3D.

It was really cool. Not as in a ATG way but it had some very amazing visuals, damn good storyline with a jaw dropping final sequence (both emotional & visual wise).

The kind that you will love after you watch it, its pretty brilliant but you won't rate it on par with the ATGs.

That movie started at 9.5 in Rotten tomatoes. Now I see its at 9.

I think it should be an ATG purely for the visuals and soundtrack.. I loved it.. also given that it didn't even start for the first 10 minutes :)

Well critics agree with you. Do you follow Rotten Tomatoes?

Only GOAT movies get 9 (before the latest update). Plus old movies are a bit over rated than today's movies.

So this movie getting an averaged 9/10 (rating) indicates critics think its a GOAT (ATG cos more movies have been included in 9 with the latest update).

The only few movies that I know above 9 (before the latest rating updates) were:

Citizen Kane
Pather Panchali (Satyajit Ray is the king in RT) - now pushed to 8.9
Dr Strangelove

And a few others. Now there may be more 9s there.

Now that everyone is mentioning their favorite movie, I will take a deep breath and name the most OVER RATED movie (in my opinion):

Shawshank Redemption

Very good movie that people have turned into some kind of GOAT.

Quite a few people I personally know love this movie the most.

Actually I watched it with great expectation. I had heard a lot about it.

Found it a bit meh.

But that's just my view. Its a pretty decently rated movie too.

It's a really good movie but a lot of people seem to praise it way too much. I wouldn't want to watch it again personally.

The boy in striped pajamas is another brilliantly directed film. Can never forget it. Reduced me to tears.

Gravity was really boring other than the stunning visuals.

I found Gravity pretty cool but I def wouldn't rate it as an ATG.

I can totally see someone getting bored by it.

It was good but completely over rated. The story was meh but the visuals were stunning.

The ending was predictable and did anyone really think
that Sandra Bullock was gonna die or that the brief reappearance of George Clooney was anything other than a hallucination??

All flair but no substance.

Honesttrailers sums it up really well (and is the funniest channel on youtube lol)

The Thing is a top class science fiction horror film with a brilliant mystery in the middle of it.

Toy Story is IMO the greatest animated film ever. Seen it a thousand times but it never gets old.

In terms of biopics, Ed Wood is highly recommended. Funny, touching, quirky. Possibly Burton's best film alongside Edward Scissorhands.

If we talk about B'wood then Hera Pheri I and Garam Masala are my fav. from comedy genre i ahve watched the former 7-8 times and the latter 3 times similarly Hulchul n Malamal Weekly was also top stuff have watched them twice

Blade Runner.Greatest Sci-Fi ever made IMO.Stunning visuals, great plot, amazing direction and the acting was top notch too.Makes you think and doesn't offer everything on a plate. They don't make em' like that anymore.

Yeah and Depps best since Scissorhands and Donnie Brasco

Gravity was really boring other than the stunning visuals.

I didn't get bored after 10 minutes.. in fact it kept on getting better..

Though I agree the story wasn't great, but the movie didn't rely on the story as such.

A movie's job is to entertain it's audience.. I don't like people giving concept or story too much importance.. if the movie is well made with a simple concept and does manage to thrill the audience, it's a great movie IMO.

It doesn't have to fit in certain well laid criteria to be called ATG.

Actually in the strictest sense (of film critiquing), a movie's job is NOT to entertain the audience.

Entertainment is subjective too. What we find boring, someone may not.

Many would find Pather Panchali as a bit boring but its still widely acknowledged by all experts as one of the greatest movies made (one of the). Personally, I didn't find it even a bit boring but that's me.

That's why Gravity being called boring does not diminish its quality in any way (in the purest sense of film critiquing).

Of course, if the film is criticized for its drama or other aspects, that is a different topic and that's when debates start.

I agree with your premise. A film can be about a simple topic and yet be one of the greatest ever. 12 Angry Men is a movie that happened in just 1 room. Yet its very very very hard to name movies that would beat it.

Is there any Indian movie which is "great" in terms of a "new idea or concept".. like watching it we marvel at the "idea" of what a movie it is.. I am only talking about the "subject" or "concept" of the movie and not about how well made it is or how well picturised/edited etc.

I don't see any Bollywood movie qualifying in that category of "great idea"/subject/concept .. is there one in your opinion (even in other Indian languages) ?

Scent of a Woman, Good Will Hunting, Freedom Writers, The Dark Knight Triology, Finding Forrester and The Rocky Series.

Go ahead Dhoni, gotta tell you I was the same, never saw it, but everyone seemed to talk about how emotional it was, it had Di Caprio so I thought why not, it turned out to actually be a great film, even before the iceberg
